• Rob Blackwell on interoperability and Azure

- by Eric Nelson
At QCon in March we had a sample Azure application implemented in both Java and Ruby to demonstrate that the Windows Azure Platform is not just about .NET. The following is an interesting interview with Rob Blackwell, the R&D director of the partner who implemented the application. UK Interoperability Team Interviews Rob Blackwell, R&D Director at Active Web Solutions. Is Microsoft taking interoperability seriously? Yes. In the past, I think Microsoft has, quite rightly come in for criticism, but architects and developers should look at this again. The Interoperability Bridges site (http://www.interoperabilitybridges.com/ ) shows a wide range of projects that allow interoperability from Java, Ruby and PHP for example. The Windows Azure platform has been architected with interoperable APIs in mind. It's straightforward to access the various storage facilities from just about any language or platform. Azure compute is capable of running more than just C# applications! Why is interoperability important to you? My company provides consultancy and bespoke development services. We're a Microsoft Gold Partner, but we live in the real world where companies have a mix of technologies provided by a variety of vendors. When developing an enterprise software solution, you rarely have a completely blank canvas. We often see integration scenarios where we need to exchange data with legacy systems. It's not unusual to see modern Silverlight applications being built on top of Java or Mainframe based back ends. Could you give us some examples of where interoperability has been important for your projects? We developed an innovative Sea Safety system for the RNLI Lifeboats here in the UK. Commercial Fishing is one of the most dangerous professions and we helped developed the MOB Guardian System which uses satellite technology and man overboard devices to raise the alarm when a fisherman gets into trouble. The solution is implemented in .NET running on Windows, but without interoperable standards, it would have been impossible to communicate with the satellite gateway technology. For more information, please see the case study: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?CaseStudyID=4000005892 More recently, we were asked to build a web site to accompany the QCon 2010 conference in London to help demonstrate and promote interoperability. We built the site using Java and Restlet and hosted it in Windows Azure Compute. The site accepts feedback from visitors and all the data is stored in Windows Azure Storage. We also ported the application to Ruby on Rails for demonstration purposes. Visitors to the stand were surprised that this was even possible. Why should Java developers be interested in Windows Azure? Windows Azure Storage consists of Blobs, Queues and Tables. The storage is scalable, durable, secure and cost-effective. Using the WindowsAzure4j library, it's easy to use, and takes just a few lines of code. If you are writing an application with large data storage requirements, or you want an offsite backup, it makes a lot of sense. Running Java applications in Azure Compute is straightforward with tools like the Tomcat Solution Accelerator (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/winazuretomcat )and AzureRunMe (http://azurerunme.codeplex.com/ ). The Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus can also be used to connect heterogeneous systems running on different networks and in different data centres. How can The Service Bus be considered an interoperability solution? I think that the Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus is one of Microsoft’s best kept secrets. Think of it as “a globally scalable application plumbing kit in the sky”. If you have used Enterprise Service Buses before, you’ll be familiar with the concept. Applications can connect to the service bus to securely exchange data – these can be point to point or multicast links. With the AppFabric Service Bus, the applications can exist anywhere that has access to the Internet and the connections can traverse firewalls. This makes it easy to extend or scale your application or reach out to other networks and technologies. For example, let’s say you have a SQL Server database running on premises and you want to expose the data to a Java application running in the cloud. You could set up a point to point Service Bus connection and use JDBC. Traditionally this would have been difficult or impossible without punching holes in firewalls and compromising security. Register now to secure your spot! The Conference Formerly Known as AGILITY... Long-time Agile customers may remember AGILITY, which was Agile's PLM customer conference that was held on an annual basis prior to Oracle's acquisiton of Agile in 2007. In February 2012, due to feedback we received from our Agile PLM community, we successfully resurrected the AGILITY conference and renamed it the PLM Summit. The PLM Summit was so well received and well-attended, that we are doing it again in 2013. This upcoming PLM Summit is being co-located in San Francisco under the overarching banner of the Oracle Value Chain Summit, and will be held alongside several other Oracle customer conferences that cover a range of value chain solutions, including Value Chain Planning, Value Chain Execution, Procurement, Maintenance and Manufacturing. This setup offers PLM attendees the best of all worlds--the opportunity to participate and learn about PLM in smaller, focused sessions by product and by industry, while also giving attendees the chance to see how PLM works together with other critical enterprise applications that address other important aspects of the value chain. Top Five Reasons to Attend the PLM Summit 2013 In the spirit of all of the end-of-the-year lists that are currently popping up, here is a list of the top five reasons to attend the PLM Summit for anyone out there needs a little extra encouragement to register: 1. The Best Opportunities for Customer Networking The PLM Summit offers attendees numerous opportunities to learn and network with fellow Agile users. Customer stories are featured in keynote and breakout presentations and the schedule allows for plenty of networking time during breakfasts, lunches, breaks and dinners. Customer networking is the number one reason that Agile users attend the PLM Summit. Read what attendees thought of the most recent PLM Summit: "Hearing about the implementation of Agile products from a customers’ perspective is invaluable." - Director of Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs, leading medical device manufacturer "Understanding the scope of other companies’ projects and the lessons learned made attending this event well worth my time." - Director of Test Engineering, global industrial manufacturer "The most beneficial thing about attending this event is the opportunity to network with other customers with similar experiences." - Director of Business Process Improvement, leading high technology company Come to the PLM Summit and play an active role within the PLM community: swap war stories and business cards, connect on LinkedIn and Facebook, share your stories and discuss the sessions from each day. Register now! 2. It's Educational! The PLM Summit is the premier educational event for anyone in the Agile PLM community. There are nearly 40 PLM-focused in-depth educational sessions led by Agile PLM experts, customers and partners that will cover a range of specific product and industry-focused topics. • CS, SE, HCI, Information Science, Please recommendation for further education of the former performing art manager seeking career in IT industries? [on hold]

- by Baek Seungjoo
IT specialists there J Thank you very much for your collective efforts here, and I got huge help reading your professional comments and advices on each questions I have searched so far! This time, I would like to ask for your practical advices or recommendation on what I am struggling on at this moment. I am currently seeking higher education for my career transition from performing art manager and director to “IT software and/or service development and management specialist”. However, as this field is quite new to me, and there are lots of different work positions, I have no idea which grad major I better pursue in order to get qualification. Of course I know this question could sounds wired as it is kind of personal choice. But my lack of understanding on how IT software companies work in general, your practical and experience-based advice will be great help to me, who spent more than two months of self-research on net. OK. Before my question, here is my plan and history, which are quite different from those currently in IT industry I think… 1) Target Firstly, get career transition into IT service or products companies and get experiences. Eventually, pursue IT entrepreneurship in combination with my arts and cultural production and business expertise. 2) Background Career: performing arts director and manager in theatre-based scale opera and musical Art education in youth BA in literature and Chinese studies (Art & Humanities) MA in Cultural & Creative Industries (Art & Humanities) – dissertation with focus on digital prosumption and the lived experience of the prosumer. (a qualitative research on the agents in the digital world) 2) Personally Huge interest in IT hardware and software, and their trend. Skills to build up, repair, tune PCs -of course this is no more than personal hobby, but shows my interests in this field. 4) Problem Encounter a question “So, what do you think you can contribute practically in this position”. This question turn me down everytime I go through job interviews, and I decided more education in the relevant area. Here are my questions. 1) In terms of work positions in IT software companies, I wonder if I can put the comparison of what “Artists” is to “Arts Manager or Director” is what “Developer” is to “Product Manager”. (Of course, this stereotypical division of Artist-Art Manager is out of sense because the domain overlaps to some extent, and is blurring at least in my field, and they are in different contexts, but just speaking easily.) Normally, artist comes with special arts educations, and they live in their own world of artistic inspiration and creation, and they feel alive in practice and on stages. Meanwhile, from the point of staging and managing productions, the role of art manager is critical as well. Our role cares how the production appeals to the audience in effective way, how to make profit and future sustainable management through that, how to set up future strategy in consideration of the external conditions such as political and social circumstances, audience trend and level, other production trends from on-going and historical perspectives, how and what the production make voice to the society from political, economic, humanitarian stances. So, we need keen eyes on economic, political, and societal environment, have to understand human-being and their desires, must know how to make presentation and attract investors, must have sense in managing and fighting over the limited financial resource, how to extend networking and so on. It is common that the two agents create productions in collaboration (normally not in that ideal way but in conflict and fight though J ). So, we need to know each other’s expertise to some extent, for better production. What are the work positions in IT software industries equivalent to the role of “art manager” in performing arts? From my view, considering developers come with special education in the world of computer science, software engineering, or others (self-education sometimes), and they express themselves with the arts of coding, computer languages on the black screen, and make sort of their artistic production online to the audience, I guess there might be someone who collaborate with developers in creating, managing, and launching IT services or products. 2) Which education among CS, SE, HCI, Information Science, is needed for those seeking such work position? Especially for person like me. (At this moment, Information Science has the highest possibility to get in, since I lack Calculus and Math in undergrad educaiton. But please let me know irrespective of this concern, I think there are ways to back it up if CS or SE education needed in my case) 3) Which field between Information Science and HCI can be more practical background regarding job hungting? And which of them have more demands in job market? AS I checked, HCI is more close to CS than IS in its focus of study area. Thank you very much for your patience reading such a long inquiry, and I appreciate to your efforts in advance. Have a nice day in this beautiful summer.

• Get "term is undefined” error when trying to assign arrayList to List component dataSource

- by user1814467
I'm creating an online game where people log in and then have the list of current players displayed. When the user enters a "room" it dispatches an SFSEvent which includes a Room object with the list of users as User objects in that room. As that event's callback function, I get the list of current users which is an Array, switch the View Stack child index, and then I wrap the user list array in an ArrayList before I assign it to the MXML Spark List component's dataSource. Here's my code: My Actionscript Code Section (PreGame.as): private function onRoomJoin(event:SFSEvent):void { const room:Room = this._sfs.getRoomByName(PREGAME_ROOM); this.selectedChild = waitingRoom; /** I know I should be using event listeners * but this is a temporary fix, otherwise * I keep getting null object errors * do to the li_users list not being * created in time for the dataProvider assignment **/ setTimeout(function ():void { const userList:ArrayList = new ArrayList(room.userList); this.li_users.dataProvider = userList; // This is where the error gets thrown },1000); } My MXML Code: <mx:ViewStack xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" initialize="preGame_initializeHandler(event)" > <fx:Script source="PreGame.as"/> <s:NavigatorContent id="nc_loginScreen"> /** Login Screen Code **/ </s:NavigatorContent> /** Start of Waiting Room code **/ <s:NavigatorContent id="waitingRoom"> <s:Panel id="pn_users" width="400" height="400" title="Users"> /** This is the List in question **/ <s:List id="li_users" width="100%" height="100%"/> </s:Panel> </s:NavigatorContent> </mx:ViewStack> However, I keep getting this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The arrayList has data, so I know it's not empty/null.

Hi, I would like to base one component's x and y cooridnates according to another, I tried using the binding notation but it doesn't seem to work! <s:VGroup xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo" xmlns:vld ="com.lal.validators.*" xmlns:effect="com.lal.effects.*" xmlns:components="com.lal.components.*" width="400" height="100%" right="0" horizontalAlign="right" verticalCenter="0"> ...... <s:VGroup width="125" height="100%" horizontalAlign="right" gap="0" width.normal="153" x.normal="247" width.expanded="199" x.expanded="201"> ...... <s:Panel includeIn="expanded" id="buttonsGroup" mouseOut="changeStateToNormal();" mouseOver="stopChangeToNormal();" skinClass="com.lal.skins.TitlelessPanel" title="hi" right="0" width="125" height="700" > ..... <s:Label text="Jump To Date" paddingTop="20" /> <s:TextInput id="wholeDate" width="100" mouseOver="stopChangeToNormal();" click="date1.visible = true" focusOut="date1.visible = false"/> ... </s:Panel> </s:VGroup> <mx:DateChooser id="date1" change="useDate(event); this.visible = false; " visible="false" mouseOver="stopChangeToNormal();" y="{wholeDate.y}" x="{wholeDate.x}" /> </s:VGroup>

• What does the JS function 'postMessage()' do when called on an html object tag?

- by Stephano
I was recently searching for a way to call the print function on a PDF I was displaying in adobe air. I solved this problem with a little help from this fellow, and by calling postMessage on my PDF like so: //this is the HTML I use to view my PDF ... //this actionscript lives in my air app var pdfObj:Object = htmlLoader.window.document.getElementById("PDFObj"); pdfObj.postMessage([message]); I've tried this in JavaScript as well, just to be sure it wasn't adobe sneaking in and helping me out... var obj = document.getElementById("PDFObj"); obj.postMessage([message]); Works well in JavaScript and in ActionScript. I looked up what the MDC had to say about postMessage, but all I found was window.postMessage. Now, the code works like a charm, and postMessage magically sends my message to my PDF's embedded JavaScript. However, I'm still not sure how I'm doing this. I found adobe talking about this method, but not really explaining it: HTML-PDF communication basics JavaScript in an HTML page can send a message to JavaScript in PDF content by calling the postMessage() method of the DOM object representing the PDF content. Any ideas how this is accomplished?

• SparkDataContainer Scroller not scrolling to bottom of container

- by AZSL
I am using a scroller component within a custom skin for a SkinnableDataContainer. I am running into an issue in that the thumbbar of the scroller stops at about the 50% point, however this is actually the end of the scrollable area. In actuality, the thumbbar should be at the bottom of the scroll track. Here's the code for the scroller: <s:SparkSkin xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo" bottom="150" > <s:states> <s:State name="normal" /> <s:State name="disabled" /> </s:states> <fx:Metadata> [HostComponent("spark.components.SkinnableDataContainer")] </fx:Metadata> <s:Rect left="0" right="0" bottom="0" top="0" radiusX="4" radiusY="4" > <s:fill> <s:SolidColor id="fillColor" color="0xEFEFEF"/> </s:fill> </s:Rect> <s:Group width="905" height="395" id="mainGroup"> <s:Scroller left="10" right="10" top="4" bottom="10" > <s:DataGroup id="dataGroup" /> </s:Scroller> <s:Rect left="0" right="0" top="0" bottom="0"> <s:stroke> <s:SolidColorStroke weight="1" color="0xD8D8D8"/> </s:stroke> </s:Rect> </s:Group>

• pdfmark for docinfo metadata in pdf is not accepting accented characters in Keywords or Subject

- by rpilkey
I am inserting metadata into postscript files with a program, to be distilled to pdf with Adobe Distiller. I am using this code that I grabbed from Thomas Merz's "Web Publishing with Acrobat-PDF": /pdfmark where {pop} {userdict /pdfmark /cleartomark load put} ifelse [ /Title (mot accenté) /Author (mot accenté) /Subject (mot accenté) /Keywords (mot accenté) /DOCINFO pdfmark When you look at the metadata, the accented characters turn into "?" in the Subject and Keyword fields, but not the Title and Author fields. The characters are the same ascii 233 I tried replacing them with octal encoding (\351), which came out the same (Title and Author okay, Subject and Keywords messed up). file encoding is latin-1,unix eol I found a mention on adobe forums, but the answer didn't make sense to me. http://forums.adobe.com/message/1165593 I changed the encoding to utf-8, inserted the characters binarily (in VIM : <Ctrl-v>u00e9), no change. I tried inserting the BOM in a few places, it didn't work. This is with Acrobat Pro 9 I didn't notice this problem with Acrobat Pro 7. Does anybody know of a workaround to get the accented characters into ALL the metadata fields when modifying a postscript file, or tell me if I'm doing it wrong? It seems weird that different fields would not accept the same bytes.

• Flex: How to access movieclips within an imported swf

- by squared
Hello, I have imported a swf (not created with Flex, i.e. non-framework) into a Flex application. Once loaded, I would like to access movieclips within that imported swf. Looking at Adobe's docs (http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=controls_15.html), it seems straightforward; however, their examples are between a Flex app and an imported swf (created with Flex). Like their example, I'm trying to use the SystemManager to access the imported swf's content; however, I receive the following error: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.display::MovieClip@58ca241 to mx.managers.SystemManager. Is this error occurring because I'm importing a non-framework swf into a framework swf? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Code: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute"> <mx:SWFLoader source="assets/test.swf" id="loader" creationComplete="swfLoaded()" /> <mx:Script> import mx.managers.SystemManager; [Bindable] public var loadedSM:SystemManager; private function swfLoaded():void { loadedSM = SystemManager(loader.content); } </mx:Script> </mx:Application>

• Flex 4 - Highlight keywords in a block of text using TextLine

- by Baz
I have a search and results page that I would like to highlight the keywords that were searched for, in the text of the results. It was suggested that I use TextLine for this, but I am having trouble figuring out how to make it work. I started a simple, compilable dummy application and was hoping someone could give me some tips on how to continue: <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" initialize="initApp();"> <fx:Script> import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.text.engine.*; private var textLine:TextLine; private function initApp():void { var normalFormat:ElementFormat = new ElementFormat(null, 12, 0x000000); var highlightFormat:ElementFormat = new ElementFormat(null, 14, 0xff0000); var textBlock:TextBlock = new TextBlock(new TextElement("This is text that has KEYWORDS. I would like to highlight these KEYWORDS by changing their font color and adding a light yellow background graphic.", normalFormat)); textLine = textBlock.createTextLine(); textLine.y = 100; embeddedFontHolder.addChild(textLine); } </fx:Script> <mx:UIComponent width="100%" id="embeddedFontHolder" /> </s:Application> Anyone have any ideas? Cheers, Baz

• Flex: Linebreak problem with spark.components.TextArea inside a MXDataGridItemRenderer

- by radgar
Hi, I have a DataGrid that has a MXDataGridItemRenderer applied as an itemEditor to one of the columns. The editor includes a spark.components.TextArea control. By default, any text item editor of a datagrid closes itself when [enter] key is pressed.. Keeping this in mind; What I want to do is: Prevent editor from closing on [SHIFT+ENTER] key but accept the linebreak (I can do this, see code below) Close the editor on [ENTER] key but do not accept the linebreak (could not achieve this) Here is the current code in the MXDataGridItemRenderer: <s:MXDataGridItemRenderer xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" focusEnabled="true" > <fx:Script> protected function onTxtDataKeyDown(event:KeyboardEvent):void { //Prevent editor from closing on [SHIFT+ENTER] key but accept the linebreak // » this works if (event.shiftKey && event.keyCode == 13) { event.stopImmediatePropagation(); } //Close the editor on [ENTER] key but do not accept the linebreak else if (event.keyCode == 13) { event.preventDefault(); } // » does not work } </fx:Script> <s:TextArea id="txtData" paddingTop="3" lineBreak="explicit" text="{dataGridListData.label}" verticalScrollPolicy="auto" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" keyDown="onTxtDataKeyDown(event)" /> I also tried the textInput event but that did not do the trick. So: How can I prevent the linebreak when the editor is closed on [enter] key? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. EDIT: If I change the spark.components.TextArea to mx.controls.TextArea, second part with event.preventDefault() will work as expected but then the first part where SHIFT+ENTER accepts the linebreak will not work.

• pdf external streams in Max OS X Preview

- by olpa
According to the specification, a part of a PDF document can reside in an external file. An example for an image: 2 0 obj << /Type /XObject /Subtype /Image /Width 117 /Height 117 /BitsPerComponent 8 /Length 0 /ColorSpace /DeviceRGB /FFilter /DCTDecode /F (pinguine.jpg) >> stream endstream endobj I found that this functionality does work in Adobe Acrobat 5.0 for Windows (sample PDF with the image), also I managed to view this file in Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.3 for Mac OS X after I found the setting "Allow external content". Unfortunately, it seems that non-Adobe tools ignore the external stream feature. I hope I'm wrong, therefore ask the question: How to enable external streams in Mac OS X? (I think that all the system Mac OS X tools use the same library, therefore say "Mac OS X" instead of "Preview".) Or maybe there could be a programming hook to emulate external streams? My task is: store a big set of images (total ˜300Mb) outside of a small PDF (˜1Mb). At some moment, I want to filter PDF through a quartz filter and get a PDF with the images embedded. Any suggestions are welcome.

• Can I get debug symbols for flash player? Or any other way to get support for flash?

- by Tim
The company I am working for has a flash component (using flex and cs4) that crashes intermittently in chrome, FF and IE. (so far only win32 platforms) I submitted a bug report to Adobe but have not heard anything back from them. Their support process seems like a black hole. WE can get a dump from Flash using these steps but after submitting the bug we got no help at all. We loaded this into MS visual studio but can;t get decent stack information because there are no symbols for the flash stuff. Microsoft and other companies provide symbols to help with debugging and we would like to get that from adobe. Is there any way to make progress on this? Does anyone know where to get flash symbols or how else we can make progress? It is hard to debug the process if the container just dies. the binary is flash10c.ocx I just spent a painful hour on the phone with adobe folks - and the final answer from one of them (I spoke to about 8 people) was that they do not have a per incident purchase plan for developer support for flash. I find that hard to believe. Does anyone know how to get support for Flash?

• Center label instance inside VGroup in Flex

Hi all I am trying to center my labels below my image inside my VGroup. The labels are align to left now and it seems like HorizontalAlign is not working on spark component. Thanks a lot. <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="955" minHeight="600"> <fx:Declarations> </fx:Declarations> <s:VGroup width="800"> <mx:Image source="images/big/city1.jpg"/> <s:Label text="test1" horizontalCenter="0" /> //doesn't work....:( <s:Label text="test2" /> </s:VGroup> </s:Application>

• How is it possible to extend an SWFLoader with MXML?

- by michael-cereda
I'm currently doing the following.. Main application: " " In the Component: First Try: </fx:Script> <fx:Declarations></fx:Declarations> <mx:SWFLoader x="0" y="0" id="loader"/> </s:Group> Second Try: <s:Group xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"> <fx:Script> [Bindable] public var source:String; </fx:Script> <fx:Declarations> </fx:Declarations> <mx:SWFLoader x="0" y="0" source="{source}"/> </s:Group> But the component displays only a "Not Found" icon in both cases. • TextArea component is null on applicationComplete event

- by Alan G.
I have a weird issue (weird because it is specific to one component) with applicationComplete in a fairly simple application. All the UI components are declared in MXML. I can access them all in applicationComplete, but not a spark.components.TextArea component, named taStatus here; it is null in the handler. MXML looks sort of like this (there are lots of other components, but nothing special) <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="710" minHeight="640" applicationComplete="onApplicationComplete(event)" width="710" height="640"> <mx:TabNavigator left="15" right="15" top="15" bottom="340" paddingTop="0"> <s:NavigatorContent label="General" width="100%" height="100%"> <s:Label x="93" y="71" text="Label" id="lblTest"/> </s:NavigatorContent> <s:NavigatorContent label="Status" width="100%" height="100%"> <s:TextArea id="taStatus" width="100%" height="100%" text="Startup." editable="false"/> </s:NavigatorContent> </mx:TabNavigator> <fx:Script source="main.as" /> </s:Application> Here is the handler in main.as protected function onApplicationComplete(event: FlexEvent) : void { lblTest.text = 'abc789'; // OK taStatus.text = 'abc789'; // Fail } TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. So taStatus is null... What is so special about this TextArea?

• Flex 4 hideEffect transition bug

- by xerious87
I'm trying to create a slide effect. Everything works fine except when the hideEffect animation is shown for the first time. The content does not become invisible when crossing the TabNavigator's border, which looks really ugly in my current project. The following simple example demonstrates the problem: <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009" xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark" xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="955" minHeight="600" backgroundColor="0xDDDDDD"> <fx:Declarations> <s:Move id="hideEffect" xTo="700" /> </fx:Declarations> <mx:TabNavigator width="500" height="300" x="100" y="0"> <s:NavigatorContent label="ONE" hideEffect="{hideEffect}"> <s:BorderContainer backgroundColor="0xFF0000" height="100" width="100"/> </s:NavigatorContent> <s:NavigatorContent label="TWO" hideEffect="{hideEffect}"> <s:BorderContainer backgroundColor="0xFF0000" height="100" width="100"/> </s:NavigatorContent> <s:NavigatorContent label="THREE" hideEffect="{hideEffect}"> <s:BorderContainer backgroundColor="0xFF0000" height="100" width="100"/> </s:NavigatorContent> <s:NavigatorContent label="FOUR" hideEffect="{hideEffect}"> <s:BorderContainer backgroundColor="0xFF0000" height="100" width="100"/> </s:NavigatorContent> </mx:TabNavigator> </s:Application> Screenshot: hideEffectBug Any ideas how to fix this bug?

• How do I change the application background color at run-time in a Flex 3.5 application?

- by Adam Tuttle
I have a Flex 3.5 application that will serve multiple purposes, and as part of the visual changes that I'd like to make to indicate which mode the application is in, I want to change its background color. Currently, the application tag looks like this: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" xmlns:com="ventures.view.component.*" xmlns:views="ventures.view.*" layout="absolute" preinitialize="onPreInitialize()" creationComplete="onCreationComplete()" applicationComplete="onApplicationComplete()" click="onClick(event)" enabled="{(!chainController.generalLocked)}" backgroundGradientColors="[0xFFFFFF, 0xFFFFFF]" > I've tried using a binding, for both the backgroundColor and backgroundGradientColors attributes: <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" ... backgroundColor="{app_background_color}" > —and— <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" ... backgroundGradientColors="{app_background_color}" > but for the former binding is not allowed, and for the latter there is a warning that: Data binding will not be able to detect assignments to "app_background_color". I also ran across this page which seems to indicate that I could do it with the setStyle() method, but the documentation seems to indicate that this method is only available for components, not the main canvas. I suppose I could wrap everything in a <mx:Canvas></mx:Canvas> specificially for this purpose, but that seems wasteful—like Div-itis in HTML or something. What's the best way to change the main application background color at run-time?
