• Is it worth learning either GWT or Vaadin?

  I consider myself a decent java/web developer. In my career I have always used servlets and ejb's with a web front end, most recently incoporating jquery and ajax. I can see the theoretical benefit of using GWT or Vaadin: it is my understanding they convert Java code to the required JavaScript/HTML. So the developer gets the benefit of cross browser compatibility and compile time error checking (of web GUI elements). My question is threefold: Are there any other benefits I am missing that would be gained using Vaadin or GWT? I am actually quite confident and productive using HTML and JavaScript - so will I actually see any benefit? Or will it just make my knowledge of these areas redundant (as they are handled by GWT/Vaadin)? Will the end result be that I can create enterprise scale data driven websites in a reasonably short time? I can however already do this, and I have not wasted any time learning GWT/Vaadin.

• Are there code reviews in opensource projects? If so, what tools are used to do this?

  I know there is a big push for code reviews in commercial development. However, are code reviews used in open source software or is based on trust? If so, then how are they performed? [Is it a delayed commit, "a pre commit environment", is there a tool that allows for the patch to be sent to another dev]? Are there any projects that use code reviews? From my understanding the linux kernel is mostly based around trust of the commitor. MySQL was based on the main author's approval and the performance impact.

• MIT vs. BSD vs. Dual License

  My understanding is that: MIT-licensed projects can be used/redistributed in BSD-licensed projects. BSD-licensed projects can be used/redistributed in MIT-licensed projects. The MIT and the BSD 2-clause licenses are essentially identical. BSD 3-clause = BSD 2-clause + the "no endorsement" clause Issuing a dual license allows users to choose from those licenses—not be bound to both. If all of the above is correct, then what is the point of using a dual MIT/BSD license? Even if the BSD refers to the 3-clause version, then can't a user legally choose to only abide by the MIT license? It seems that if you really want the "no endorsement" clause to apply then you have to license it as just BSD (not dual). If you don't care about the "no endorsement" clause, then MIT alone is sufficient and MIT/BSD is redundant. Similarly, since the MIT and BSD licenses are both "GPL-compatible" and can be redistributed in GPL-licensed projects, then dual licensing MIT/GPL also seems redundant.

The static/hierarchy one Works like a stack Entries are pushed when a user goes "deeper" into the site Entries are poped when user goes "up" into the site Is the same for all users (for a given page) Shows location rather than history A simple Example would be HOME - BIG CATEGORY - SMALL CATEGORY - ARTICLE The dynamic/historical one Works like a queue Entries are pushed at the end when a user goes to another page Entries are removed from the front when the maximum size is reached Is different for each user, since it is personalized. Shows timeline/history instead of location. A simple example would be SMALL CATEGORY - HOME - BIG CATEGORY - HOME The question is: Are there any ready-made JSF component for these types of navigation?

• Where can I find a good tutorial to replicate Game Maker's surfaces and blend modes in XNA?

  I know Game Maker's surfaces exist in XNA (It's more the othe way around, XNA's surfaces exist in Game Maker), same thing for blend modes, since (I think) they both use DirectX. This is the question: "Where can I find a good tutorial to replicate Game Maker's surfaces and blend modes in XNA?" I'm using XNA 4.0 and Game Maker 8.1 Pro. Background I'm slowly moving from Game Maker to... Something else. I've learned some good C++ but DirectX is hardcore and OpenGL needs some pretty good understanding of the language to be able to use it correctly. XNA and C# together seemed like a good middle but the documentation is hard to understand for a newb like me. In the end, I chose to focus on XNA.

• How to determine if a programming language is verbose or terse?

  Programming languages can often be described as verbose or terse. From my understanding, a verbose language is easy to read and understand, while a terse language is concise and neat, but more difficult to read. Should there be other things to consider in the definitions? It seems much of the popular programming languages of today are verbose, and these terms two terms are only used to describe a language as being more or less, relative to than another language. How do we determine if a programming language is more verbose/terse over another? Example: Is C# more verbose than Java?

• Pass FORTRAN variable to Python [migrated]

  I have a FORTRAN program that is called from a Python script (as an ArcGIS tool). I need to pass an array, Raster_Z(i,j), from FORTRAN to python. I have read about the Python subprocess module; however, I have not had much luck in understanding how to do this with FORTRAN. All examples I have found involve simple unix command line calls and not actual programs. Has anyone had any experience in passing a variable from FORTRAN to Python via a memory PIPE? • Difference between extensible programming and extendible programming?

  What exactly is the different between "extensible programming" and "extendible programming?" Wikipedia states the following: The Lisp language community remained separate from the extensible language community, apparently because, as one researcher observed, any programming language in which programs and data are essentially interchangeable can be regarded as an extendible [sic] language. ... this can be seen very easily from the fact that Lisp has been used as an extendible language for years. If I'm understanding this correctly, it says "Lisp is extendible implies Lisp is not extensible". So what do these two terms mean, and how do they differ?

• WWSAPI and setting "soapenv:Header" values

  I'm trying to connect to a web service from a C++ app using WWS. I got the base connection working just fine. My XML message has two parts though, a header (soapenv:Header) and a body (soapenv:Body). the generated functions only fill in the body. How do I set the Header information? I assumed it has something to do with WsSetHeader() or WsAddCustomHeader() but can't seam to find the right values to use in the parameters. Can someone point me in the right direction here? I've been googling and trying to research this now for several days and am finding many sources for basic help with WWSAPI, but nothing seams to go deeper into how to use it for more advanced applications. any good links or resources to find more advanced help on WWSAPI?   I have worked in many projects and have notice some people just refuse and have no interest in learning new technology. They simply look down to every simple tool and technology. It’s hard to understand how they got here at first place. I have understanding for time for family and social activities. But I don’t understand the lack of any single interest. It’s kind of being in wrong business. I have read this question and I think the problem is the people. How do you handle a developer that has taken "early retirement" (unwilling to learn)? How do you motivate them? What is the term for people who refuses to learn new technology?

• Deploying SSIS to Integration Services Catalog (SSISDB) via SQL Server Data Tools

• Web services, J2EE, Spring, DB integration project ideas - maybe data mining related?

  I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

I downloaded the database reference help file but I could not understand from where I can start. It just gave the table name and its information.   The title for this question pretty much sums up what I'm asking. I've got a list of taxonomy terms, and I'm using a view to display the latest post to each one. I'd like to also display a custom field set up in CCK just under this. Currently, I'm just using "date updated" of the taxonomy term itself which was easy to set up in views. I'd like to drill a little deeper and get the custom "event date" field I've added to the content type last posted to the taxonomy term I'm "viewing". I've got a feeling I'm going to have to write my own database query for this. If (I can avoid that){ How do I set up such a view? } Else{ What's the best practice for including lower level database queries alongside views? }

• Java Cryptography Extension

  I was told that in order to support AES256 encryption inside my Java app that I would need the JCE with Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files. I downloaded this from Oracle and unzipped it and I'm only seeing 2 JARs: local_policy.jar; and US_export_polic.jar I just want to confirm I'm not missing anything here! My understanding (after reading the README.txt) is that I just drop these two into my <JAVA_HOME>/lib/security/ directory and they should be installed. By the names of these JARs I have to assume that its not the Java Crypto API that cannot handle AES256, but it's in fact a legal issue, perhaps? And that these two JARs basically tell the JRE "yes, it's legally-acceptable to run this level of crypto (AES256)." Am I correct or off-base?

• Accept keyboard input when game is not in focus?

  I want to be able to control the game via keyboard while the game does not have focus... How can I do this in XNA? EDIT: I bought a tablet. I want to write a separate app to overly the screen with controls that will send keyboard input to the game. Although, it's not sending the input DIRECT to the game, it's using the method discussed in this SO question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6446085/emulate-held-down-key-on-keyboard To my understanding, my test app is working the way it should be but the game is not responding to this input. I originally thought that Keyboard.GetState() would get the state regardless that the game is not in focus, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

• What are the drawbacks of Python?

  Python seems all the rage these days, and not undeservingly - for it is truly a language with which one almost enjoys being given a new problem to solve. But, as a wise man once said (calling him a wise man only because I've no idea as to who actually said it; not sure whether he was that wise at all), to really know a language one does not only know its syntax, design, etc., advantages but also its drawbacks. No language is perfect, some are just better than others. So, what would be in your opinion, objective drawbacks of Python. Note: I'm not asking for a language comparison here (i.e. C# is better than Python because ... yadda yadda yadda) - more of an objective (to some level) opinion which language features are badly designed, whether, what are maybe some you're missing in it and so on. If must use another language as a comparison, but only to illustrate a point which would be hard to elaborate on otherwise (i.e. for ease of understanding)

• PHP pecl/memcached extension slow when setting option for consistent hashing

  Using the newer PHP pecl/memcached extension. Calls to Memcached::setOption() like; $m = new Memcached(); $m->setOption(Memcached::OPT_DISTRIBUTION, Memcached::DISTRIBUTION_CONSISTENT); are costing between 150 to 500ms - just in making the call to setOption() and as we're not using persistent connections but rather doing this on every request, it hurts. Delving deeper, setting Memcached::OPT_DISTRIBUTION to Memcached::DISTRIBUTION_CONSISTENT ends up calling update_continuum() in libmemcached which appears to be fairly intensive, although we're only passing a list of 15 memcached servers in, so somewhat surprising to see it take between 150 to 500ms to rebuild the continuum data structure. Could it be setting this option is only suitable for persistent connections, where it's called only once while making the initial connection? Or is this a bug libmemcached? Using the newer pecl/memcached extension 1.0.1 with libmemcached 0.38 Thanks.

• ubuntu 12.04.3 - Reverse DNS issue - slow ping interval but normal ping value

  i'm running ubuntu 12.04.3 x86 desktop in my corporation environment. I join the corp domain by Likewise open. But when I ping another pc, say hostname is pc-test, "ping pc-test" or "ping pc-test.domain.name" returns slow interval (about 5 seconds) but the ping value is below 1 ms. When I use "ping -n pc-test", everything works well. So I conclude this is about reverse DNS issue. how to fix this issue? many thanks! Edit: In my understanding, reverse DNS issue is related to DNS server or Wins server, not only an ubuntu issue, is this right? if I wanna fix this issue as much as possible on ubuntu but not on network servers, what to do?
