  • How can I beta test web Perl modules under Apache/mod_perl on production web server?

    We have a setup where most code, before being promoted to full production, is deployed in BETA mode - meaning, it runs in full production environment (using production database - usually production data; and production web server). We call that stage BETA testing. One of the main requirements is that BETA code promotion to production must be a simple "cp" command from beta to production directory - no code/filename changes. For non-web Perl code, achieving seamless BETA test is quite doable (see details here): Perl programs live in a standard location under production root (/usr/code/scripts) with production perl modules living under the same root (/usr/code/lib/perl) The BETA code has 100% same code paths except under beta root (/usr/code/beta/) A special module manipulates @INC of any script based on whether the script was called from /usr/code/scripts or /usr/code/test/scripts, to include beta libraries for beta scripts. This setup works fine up till we need to beta test our web Perl code (the setup is EmbPerl and Apache/mod_perl). The hang-up is as follows: if both a production Perl module and BETA Perl module have the same name (e.g. /usr/code/lib/perl/MyLib1.pm and /usr/code/beta/lib/perl/MyLib1.pm), then mod_perl will only be able to load ONE of these modules into memory - and there's no way we are aware of for a particular web page to affect which version of the module is currently loaded due to concurrency issues. Leaving aside the obvious non-programming solution (get a bloody BETA web server) which for political/organizational reasons is not feasible, is there any way we can somehow hack around this problem in either Perl or mod_perl? I played around with various approaches to unloading Perl modules that %INC has listed, but the problem remains that another user might load a beta page at just the right (or rather wrong) moment and have the beta module loaded which will be used for my production page.

  • How To Switch Back to Outlook 2007 After the 2010 Beta Ends

    Are you switching back to Outlook 2007 after trying out Office 2010 beta?  Here’s how you can restore your Outlook data and keep everything working fine after the switch. Whenever you install a newer version of Outlook, it will convert your profile and data files to the latest format.  This makes them work the best in the newer version of Outlook, but may cause problems if you decide to revert to an older version.  If you installed Outlook 2010 beta, it automatically imported and converted your profile from Outlook 2007.  When the beta expires, you will either have to reinstall Office 2007 or purchase a copy of Office 2010. If you choose to reinstall Office 2007, you may notice an error message each time you open Outlook. Outlook will still work fine and all of your data will be saved, but this error message can get annoying.  Here’s how you can create a new profile, import all of your old data, and get rid of this error message. Banish the Error Message with a New Profile To get rid of this error message, we need to create a new Outlook profile.  First, make sure your Outlook data files are backed up.  Your messages, contacts, calendar, and more are stored in a .pst file in your appdata folder.  Enter the following in the address bar of an Explorer window to open your Outlook data folder, and replace username with your user name: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook Copy the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) files that contain your data. Its name is usually your email address, though it may have a different name.  If in doubt, select all of the Outlook Personal Folders files, copy them, and save them in another safe place (such as your Documents folder). Now, let’s remove your old profile.  Open Control Panel, and select Mail.  In Windows Vista or 7, simply enter “Mail” in the search box and select the first entry. Click the “Show Profiles…” button. Now, select your Outlook profile, and click Remove.  This will not delete your data files, but will remove them from Outlook. Press Yes to confirm that you wish to remove this profile. Open Outlook, and you will be asked to create a new profile.  Enter a name for your new profile, and press Ok. Now enter your email account information to setup Outlook as normal. Outlook will attempt to automatically configure your account settings.  This usually works for accounts with popular email systems, but if it fails to find your information you can enter it manually.  Press finish when everything’s done. Outlook will now go ahead and download messages from your email account.  In our test, we used a Gmail account that still had all of our old messages online.  Those files are backed up in our old Outlook data files, so we can save time and not download them.  Click the Send/Receive button on the bottom of the window, and select “Cancel Send/Receive”. Restore Your Old Outlook Data Let’s add our old Outlook file back to Outlook 2007.  Exit Outlook, and then go back to Control Panel, and select Mail as above.  This time, click the Data Files button. Click the Add button on the top left. Select “Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)”, and click Ok. Now, select your old Outlook data file.  It should be in the folder that opens by default; if not, browse to the backup copy we saved earlier, and select it. Press Ok at the next dialog to accept the default settings. Now, select the data file we just imported, and click “Set as Default”. Now, all of your old messages, appointments, contacts, and everything else will be right in Outlook ready for you.  Click Ok, and then open Outlook to see the change. All of the data that was in Outlook 2010 is now ready to use in Outlook 2007.  You won’t have to wait to re-download all of your emails from the server since everything’s still here ready to be used.  And when you open Outlook, you won’t see any error messages, either! Conclusion Migrating your Outlook profile back to Outlook 2007 is fairly easy, and with these steps, you can avoid seeing an error message every time you open Outlook.  With all your data in tact, you’re ready to get back to work instead of getting frustrated with Outlook.  Many of us use webmail and keep all of our messages in the cloud, but even on broadband connections it can take a long time to download several gigabytes of emails.     When I run a program from the console, e.g. me@box:~$ firefox I expect the console to log error messages (I think this is std out or std err?) and other items from the program, firefox in this case. But today I notice that bash just opens the program and goes to a new prompt, e.g. me@box:~$ firefox me@box:~$ How do I launch a program from bash such that error messages will be written to the console? Why is it that some programs operate this way by default and others (firefox) do not?

  • Benchmarking Linux flash player and google chrome built in flash player

    I use xubuntu 14.04 64 bit, I installed flash player from software center and xubuntu-restricted-extras too Are there any benchmarks on Linux flash player and google chrome built in flash player? I just want to see their performance because in theory google's flash player should be more updated and have better performance than the one we use in Firefox. (that's what I read everywhere) I have chrome latest version installed and Firefox next, and I found that flash videos in Chrome are laggy and they take long time to load. While the same flash videos load much faster in Firefox and I tend to prefer watching flash videos in firefox, especially the long ones because it loads them so much faster. I can't believe these results on my PC, so is there any way to benchmark flash players performance on both browsers? I want to know if it's because of the flash player or the browsers or something else

  • How to use Xvfb in Ubuntu 14.04 with/without RandR?

    I try to run Unit-Tests with Selenium running Firefox on my Ubuntu 14.04 Server. And I'm using Xvfb as described in this blog to simulate a virtual display to show Firefox in. But Xvfg somehow doesn't load/work with RandR. Because whenever I try this: sudo Xvfb :10 -ac & export DISPLAY=:10 firefox I get an Xlib: extension "RandR" missing on display ":10"-Error. I've also tried sudo Xvfb :10 -ac +extension RANDR, sudo Xvfb :10 -ac -extension RANDR and beacuse it supplies with "xrandr" also apt-get install x11-xserver-utils. And my setup is a plain empty Ubuntu 14.04 Server with apt-get install xvfb firefox. Can anyone please help me run Xvfb with or without RandR?

I whould like to know in what encryption should I encode my data and why first of all, I use GET method because it is search engine inside website. second, I use RTL language (hebrew) and thrid which basically is why I ask this question - firefox and safari (as I understood) encode and decode urls automaticly so if I encoded url, in firefox I will see it decoded which is good but if I copy-paste the url to the address bar and than enter the site firefox encode the uncoded url to utf (i think). anyway, what en/decode should I use, and how can I overcome the firefox auto en/decode?

  • Visiting launchpad.net in browser causes icon to appear in launcher, how do I remove it?

    Using Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity. I think I agreed to install a Launchpad add-on in Firefox the first time I visited the site (launchpad.net), and ever since then, whenever I have an open tab in Firefox with any page on launchpad.net loaded, an icon appears in my Launcher desktop widget. If I right-click on the icon and select quit, it also closes the tab in Firefox. I've since uninstalled the Firefox add-on and rebooted, and it's still happening. How do I make it stop?   • menu not showing in apps when maximized 12.10

    I have removed the Global App Menu as I prefer to have the minimize, maximize, close buttons on the right side of each app. I did this with no problem in 12.04. I did an upgrade to 12.10 and noticed that Chrome, Chromium and Firefox all use the Global Menu. I have done the following: sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt I have disabled the Firefox extension. I removed the corresponding Firefox package but still only have a global menu. I tried Gconf but apparently that does not work in 12.10. I then tried Dconf and found this fix on Google: org gnome desktop wm preferences, look for "button_layout" on the right panel. Here is the problem, after desktop, I do not have wm. I reset Unity and got a message saying something about wm is missing. I rebooted and opened Chrome and still no fix. I then clicked maximize and once Chrome was not maximized anymore, the minimize, maximize, close buttons show up in Chrome. Same with Firefox! Any ideas? I am truly stumped. Firefox and Chrome work fine in KDE Plasma and Gnome when maximized.

  • How do I find out the Mac Address Firefox submits for Geolocation?

    I moved, but have the same router and cable box. Now when I visit Google Maps it still shows my old location. I went to the SkyhookWireless update page to update my Mac Address with my new location. The process is you put in your Mac address and it shows you the current location, and then you adjust that location and submit it. When I got the Mac Address from the status page on my router Skyhook reported that location as in Pakistan, which isn't even the correct continent (as my old or new address). I tried every other Mac address I could come up with: The cable router, the Wireless router's other Mac address, my PC's Mac address, etc. and none of them reported any location on the Skyhook page. So I am guessing that there is another Mac address, or some other bit of information that is used by Firefox when it reports to Google Maps my current location. Now that you have the back story, how do I find the Mac address or whatever information it is that Firefox (or other browsers) use to determine my Geolocation? Everything I have read online is rather vague. The next option I am considering is hooking a logging proxy onto Firefox and seeing what data it sends, but I'd rather find an easier method.     In Firefox you can easily save a group of tabs together. When (re-)accessing this group, the 'cascading' bookmark menu shows each individual bookmark (and under a line) it says "open all in tabs" I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu. Possible options: A) Record a simple macro w/ any number of "superuser" utilities* ('A' is not the preferred option, since many 'little-macros' are hard to keep track of) b) Use Autohotkey (similar to option 'A' and more flexible once you learn the basics) c) How does Firefox load all those tabs? The info must be stored somewhere (as a type of URL??) Quick Summary: The moment I click on "open all in tabs", I am clicking on something very similar to a hyper-link. How do I find the content (exact code) of that 'hyper-link', and / or "How do I easily launch the tabs?" .. . New EDIT #1: I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu, or cluttering the bookmarks toolbar which I hide anyway :o) .. . New EDIT #2: I tried to keep the question simple and not mentioning Autohotkey programming. The objective is to launch all tabs using a button on an AHK gui. When grawity said, "It's just an ordinary folder containing ordinary bookmarks," he (she) reminds me I can easily find the folder / Now how to launch to urls inside that folder? ..   • Firefox 3.6 and above. Always show one tab even if all tabs are closed like Firefox 3.0

    I very much got used to Firefox 3.0. In that, to free the memory, I close all tabs but still the main Firefox window does not close. But in Firefox 3.6 and later if I want to close all tabs and if I do so then Firefox totally exists. This is not the case with 3.0. How to stop Firefox from not closing the main process even if I close all threads (tabs)? The autocomplete feature in the address bar of Firefox 3.6 and greater is in a dark blue color which makes me very much annoyed. With my environment and the monitor glare that is inducing anger in me, so how the color be changed to be like Firefox 3.0? Because you know that black and white are a neutral and good combination and since I have been working in Firefox 3.0 (and earlier versions) for a long time this new color change and other uncomfortable options are making me sick. To check CSS3 I need to use Firefox 3.5 and greater. Besides I like Firefox because it includes the W3C's recommendations so I can learn and test new recomendations from W3C.

  • Why doesn't the Gtalk plugin work in Firefox 3.6 betas? [closed]

    I've done a quick Google search, Bugzilla search, and glanced at Google's site for the GTalk plugin, but I can't find an answer, so I thought I'd pose the question here: On OS X, in the Firefox 3.6 betas (I'm now on beta 5, but it's been happening since at least beta 3), the GTalk plugin doesn't work for me. I've been completely unable to use video chat in GChat, which forces me to open Firefox 3.5 whenever I want to use it. This happens even after I uninstall/reinstall the GTalk plugin. Anyone know why this is happening?

  • No Firefox UI if launched during boot-up

    At work I'm using Windows XP SP2. What I've noticed is if I launch Firefox while Windows hasn't finished booting up, it launches the firefox.exe process but fails to launch the associated UI i.e. there's no Firefox window at the end of it. The only way to resolve this is to kill the firefox.exe process and re-launch Firefox. Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior? Update: I'm using Firefox 3.6

    Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta and ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 were both announced today. I made a little test on one of my web applications to see how Visual Studio 2010 works with IIS Express. In this posting I will show you how to make your ASP.NET MVC 3 application work with IIS Express. Installing new stuff You can install IIS Express using Web Platform Installer. It is not part of WebMatrix anymore and you can just install IIS Express without WebMatrix. NB! You have to install IIS Express using Web Platform installer because IIS Express is not installed by SP1. After installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta on my machine (it took a long-long-long time to install) I installed also ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2. If you have Async CTP installed on your machine you have to uninstall it to get ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 installed and run without problems. Screenshot on right shows what kinf of horrors my old laptop had to survive to get all new stuff installer. Setting IIS Express as server for web application Now, when you right-click on some web project you should see new menu item in context menu – Use IIS Express…. If you click on it you are asked for confirmation and if you say Yes then your web application is reconfigured to use IIS Express. After configuration you will see dialog box like this. And you are done. You can run your application now. Running web application When you run your application it is run on IIS Express. You can see IIS Express icon on taskbar and when you click it you can open IIS Express settings. If you closed your application in browser you can open it again from IIS Express icon. Modifying IIS Express settings for web application You can modify IIS Express settings for your application. Just open your project properties and move to Web tab. IIS and IIS Express are using same settings. The difference is if you make check to Use IIS Express checkbox or not. Switching back to Visual Studio Development Server If you don’t want or you can’t use IIS Express for some reason you can easily switch back to Visual Studio Development Server. Just right-click on your web application project and select Use Visual Studio Development Server from context menu. Conclusion IIS Express is more independent than full version of IIS and it can be also installed and run on machines where are very strict rules (some corporate and academic environments by example). IIS Express was previously part of WebMatrix package but now it is separate product and Visual Studio 2010 has very nice support for it thanks to SP1. You can easily make your web applications use IIS Express and if you want to switch back to development server it is also very easy.

  • Upgrades from Beta or CTP SQL Server Software is NOT Supported

    As of this writing, SQL Server 2008 R2 has released, and just like every release, I get e-mails and calls from folks with this question: “Can I upgrade from Customer Technical Preview (CTP) x or Beta #x or Release Candidate (RC) to the “Released to Manufacturing” (RTM) version?” No. Right up until the last minute, things are changing in the code – and you want that to happen. Our internal testing runs right up until the second we lock down for release, and we watch the CTP/RC/Beta reports to make sure there are no show-stoppers, and fix what we find. And it’s not just “big” changes you need to worry about – a simple change in one line of code can have a massive effect. I know, I know – you’ve possibly upgraded an RC or CTP to the RTM version and it worked “just fine”. But hear this tale: I’ve dealt with someone who faced this exact situation in SQL Server 2008. They upgraded (which is clearly prohibited in the documentation) from a CTP to the RTM version over a year ago. Everything was working fine. But then…one day they had an issue. Couldn’t fix it themselves, we took a look, days went by, and we finally had to call in the big guns for support. Turns out, the upgrade was the problem. So we had to come up with some elaborate schemes to get the system migrated over while they were in production. This was painful for everyone involved. So the answer is still no. Just don’t do it. There is one caveat to this story – if you are a “TAP” customer (you’ll know if you are), we help you move from the CTP products to RTM, but that’s a special case that we track carefully and send along special instructions and tools to help you along. That level of effort isn’t possible on a large scale, so it’s not just a magic tool that we run to upgrade from CTP to RTM. So again, unless you’re a TAP customer, it’s a no-no.
