• Separating merged array of arithmetic and geometric series

  Given an array of positive integers in increasing order. Separate them in two series, an arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence. The given array is such that a solution do exist. The union of numbers of the two sequence must be the given array. Both series can have common elements i.e. series need not to be disjoint. The ratio of the geometric series can be fractional. Example: Given series : 2,4,6,8,10,12,25 AP: 2,4,6,8,10,12 GP: 4,10,25 I tried taking few examples but could not reach a general way. Even tried some graph implementation by introducing edges if they follow a particular sequence but could not reach solution.

• What good free forum engines are out there? [closed]

  I'm looking for a forum engine for my website, which will look modern, easy to use and follow lengthy discussions. Most of the times people hear "forum" they imagine unresponsive phpBB with terrible color scheme and unnecessarily huge user info sections (avatar, signature) about 600px high each, which make it impossible to see more than 5 posts on a really big screen. I'd like it to be the other way around with my future forum. Features I'd like to see: Clean, transparent section/thread selection, Must not have "message posted, you will be redirected to wherever" screens, 1-click message posting (captchas are ok, but not the ones that erase the whole post when you mistype), Tree hierarchy for comments to posts

• Maya is lagging in a specific way...?

  My Maya installation worked perfectly. It is not my computer. Something caused it to stop working overnight, somehow. When I try to drag a vertex or something like that, it moves the vertex, but then I have to click like 3 times somewhere outside the mesh before the actual mesh will catch up and follow the vertex. Until I do that, it just stays as it was, with a floating vertex somewhere inside it or outside it. It makes modeling borderline impossible and completely infuriating. What ought to be happening is what we're all used to-- as I move the vertex, the mesh follows it actively, so I can see what it looks like at every given moment until I release the vertex in its new position. Other weird thing: this only applies to complex meshes, like a couple thousand faces. A simple cube works fine. What gives?? Anybody?

If you ever feel like getting rid of these history information, then you need to delete them. Skype provides a single click option to clear all the history from you account, but the feature is buried deep under options menu.Really deep!. To clear history follow the menu Tools –> Options, switch to Privacy Settings tab available on the left side, click on Show advanced options button and finally hit the button Clear history. Ah! • Mousin' down the PathListBox

  While modifying the standard media player with a new look and feel for Ineta Live I saw a unique opportunity to use their logo with a dotted I with and attached arc as the scrub control. So I created a PathListBox that I wanted an object to follow when a user did a click and drag action.  Below is how I solved the problem.  Please let me know if you have improvements or know of a completely different way.  I am always eager to learn. First, I created a path using the pen tool in Expression Blend (see the yellow line in image below).  Then I right clicked that path and chose [Path] --> [Make Layout Path].   That created a new PathListBox.  Then I chose the object I want to move down the new PathListBox and Placed it as a child in the Objects and Timeline window (see image below).  If the child object (the thing the user will click and drag) is XAML, it will move much smoother than images. Just as another side note, I wanted there to be no highlight when the user selects the “ball” to drag and drop.  This is done by editing the ItemContainerStyle under Additional Templates on the PathListBox.  Post a question if you need help on this and I will expand my explanation. Here is a pic of the object and the path I wanted it to follow.  I gave the path a yellow solid brush here so you could see it but when I lay this over another object, I will make the path transparent.   To animate this object down the path, the trick is to animate the Start number for the LayoutPath.  Not the StartItemIndex, the Start above Span. • How to Hashtag (Without Being #Annoying)

  The right tool in the wrong hands can be a dangerous thing. Giving a chimpanzee a chain saw would not be a pretty picture. And putting Twitter hashtags in the hands of social marketers who were never really sure how to use them can be equally unattractive. Boiled down, hashtags are for search and organization of tweets. A notch up from that, they can also be used as part of a marketing strategy. In terms of search, if you’re in the organic apple business, you want anyone who searches “organic” on Twitter to see your posts about your apples. It’s keyword tactics not unlike web site keyword search tactics. So get a clear idea of what keywords are relevant for your tweet. It’s reasonable to include #organic in your tweet. Is it fatal if you don’t hashtag the word? It depends on the person searching. If they search “organic,” your tweet’s going to come up even if you didn’t put the hashtag in front of it. If the searcher enters “#organic,” your tweet needs the hashtag. Err on the side of caution and hashtag it so it comes up no matter how the searcher enters it. You’ll also want to hashtag it for the second big reason people hashtag, organization. You can follow a hashtag. So can the rest of the Twitterverse. If you’re that into organic munchies, you can set up a stream populated only with tweets hashtagged #organic. If you’ve established a hashtag for your brand, like #nobugsprayapples, you (and everyone else) can watch what people are tweeting about your company. So what kind of hashtags should you include? They should be directly related to the core message of your tweet. Ancillary or very loosely-related hashtags = annoying. Hashtagging your brand makes sense. Hashtagging your core area of interest makes sense. Creating a specific event or campaign hashtag you want others to include and spread makes sense (the burden is on you to promote it and get it going). Hashtagging nearly every word in the tweet is highly annoying. Far and away, the majority of hashtagged words in such tweets have no relevance, are not terms that would be searched, and are not terms needed for categorization. It looks desperate and spammy. Two is fine. One is better. And it is possible to tweet with --gasp-- no hashtags! Make your hashtags as short as you can. In fact, if your brand’s name really is #nobugsprayapples, you’re burning up valuable, limited characters and risking the inability of others to retweet with added comments. Also try to narrow your topic hashtag down. You’ll find a lot of relevant users with #organic, but a lot of totally uninterested users with #food. Just as you can join online forums and gain credibility and a reputation by contributing regularly to that forum, you can follow hashtagged topics and gain the same kind of credibility in your area of expertise. Don’t just parachute in for the occasional marketing message. And if you’re constantly retweeting one particular person, stop it. It’s kissing up and it’s obvious. Which brings us to the king of hashtag annoyances, “hashjacking.” This is when you see what terms are hot and include them in your marketing tweet as a hashtag, even though it’s unrelated to your content. Justify it all you want, but #justinbieber has nothing to do with your organic apples. Equally annoying, piggybacking on a popular event’s hashtag to tweet something not connected to the event. You’re only fostering ill will and mistrust toward your account from the people you’ve tricked into seeing your tweet. Lastly, don’t @ mention people just to make sure they see your tweet. If the tweet’s not for them or about them, it’s spammy. What I haven’t covered is use of the hashtag for comedy’s sake. You’ll see this a lot and is a matter of personal taste. No one will search these hashtagged terms or need to categorize then, they’re just there for self-expression and laughs. • Application for taking pretty screenshots (like OS X does)

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

• HTML5 Audio: Which formats? Ditch Ogg Vorbis in favor of Ogg Opus? Is MP3 still needed?

  I'm currently working on a website which has to stream audio files. Since bandwidth is always an issue, the file size should be as small as possible. I wonder what audio formats I should provide. MP3 - Most common format but low quality, I don't know if it's even required, since AAC is well supported by the browsers incapable of playing free codecs MP4 AAC - Nice quality / small filesize, supported by Safari / Mobile Devices / IE9 / Flash / Chrome A free codec - well, until recently, there only was Ogg Vorbis, but Ogg Opus is standardized now and it's really good! Questions: Is it time yet to use Opus instead if Vorbis? Firefox supports Opus since version 15, and Opera has support on its roadmap - I guess Chrome will follow in the future too. Do I still have to provide an MP3 file?

• What's the difference or purpose of a file format like ELF when flat binaries take up less space and can do the same thing?

  I will give a better description now. In Linux driver development you need to follow a specification using an ELF file format as a finalized executable, i.e., that right there is not flat, it has headers, entry fields, and is basically carrying more weight than just a flat binary with opcodes. What is the purpose or in-depth difference of a Linux ELF file for a driver to interact with the video hardware, and, say, a bare, flat x86 16-bit binary I write that makes use of emulated graphics mode on a graphics card and writes to memory(besides the fact that the Linux driver probably is specific to making full use of the hardware and not just the emulated, backwards compatible memory accessing scheme). To sum it up, what is a difference or purpose of a binary like ELF with different headers and settings and just a flat binary with the necessary opcodes/instructions/data to do the same thing, just without any specific format? Example: Windows uses PE, Mac uses Mach-O/PEF, Linux uses ELF/FATELF, Unix uses COFF. What do any of them really mean or designate if you can just go flat, especially with a device driver which is system software.

• Do you use to third party companies to review your company's code?

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

• BOX2D Kinematic Platform with parallax layer

  I am using a kinematic body for my moving platform on x-axis, so I set the linear velocity to b2vec2(5,0). When the player jump on the platform, it works like it is suppose to. But the thing is that my platform is on the obstacle layer and I am moving it with the parallax layer. So if I setTransform the kinematic platform to follow the obstacle layer than it's physics will not work and the player will slip-off the platform. I'm developing for iOS and using cocos2d api. Anyway around this?

• Why does the sudo command not work in chroot?

  I just installed a 32-bit chroot to run on my 64-bit system. In the chroot environment, the sudo command doesn't work, it says sudo: command not found Also, when I try the su root command, my password doesn't work (su: authentication failure). What password do they want? I'm quite new to Ubuntu, so actually I don't really know what I'm doing. I am just trying to follow instructions. I solved this particular problem simply by starting the chroot by the command: katarina@ubuntu:~$ schroot -c oneiric_i386 -u root instead of the one I used the first time: katarina@ubuntu:~$ schroot -a I still have some other problems, but I guess that's not for this question.

• BigDecimal.floatValue versus Float.valueOf

  Has anybody ever come across this: System.out.println("value of: " + Float.valueOf("3.0f")); // ok, prints 3.0 System.out.println(new BigDecimal("3.0f").floatValue()); // NumberFormatException I would argue that the lack of consistency here is a bug, where BigDecimal(String) doesn't follow the same spec as Float.valueOf() (I checked the JDK doc). I'm using a library that forces me to go through BigDecimal, but it can happen that I have to send "3.0f" there. Is there a known workaround (BigDecimal is inaccessible in a library).

• Dead (nearly blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - how to fix?

  My laptop screen is black while my secondary screen is fine. What I tried: setting brightness (Fn keys) - no effect, no change seen, also on secondary screen removing static electricity like suggested here - no effect restarting / charging battery, running on battery / "wall" power - no effect as well wait to see if warming it up helps - it doesn't follow official Ubuntu diagnostics - checking now... What I will try next: check last updates I've made IIRC I am running on nomodeset already, but can't recall how to verify this Further symptoms: can't see BIOS screen system loads and works fine, just screen has problems screen works (occasionally I could glimpse very dimly what was going on, but it was like with minimum brightness set - nearly non-distinguishable from just a black screen) Any ideas how to proceed best? What is most probable cause?

• How do you balance the speed of Sprints with the customer's conservative adoption schedule?

  I'd prefer to have sprints that last 3-4 weeks, but customers don't want to adopt new feature/function every 3-4 weeks. Existing customers are conservative and, once we meet their minimum bar for features and capabilities, they like to remain on a stable release for much longer than 4 weeks. Even a 3-month cycle would be pushing it for them. On the other hand, newer customers tend to have more feature requests, and are willing to follow sprints. But this willingness dissipates after we've met their bar. How do you balance the need for rapid sprints with the customer's conservative view of application change? I'm particularly interested in SaaS scenarios.

• 12.04 Screen goes OFF and ON and hangs

  i have installed ubuntu 12.04. while i'm using the screen goes off, comes back on (during which time, the system is not responsive) and this process repeats one more time in immediate succession after which the computer is responsive again. sometimes the system hangs indefinitely. sometimes the windows go blank. only the title bars are seen. i have tried re-installing the OS three times with no improvements. i have tried both 32 bit as well as 64 bit. i have no idea what the problem is and have tried hard to pin point that. i never had this prob till 11.10 my system config is as follow processor - 2nd gen intel core i7 (2660k) graphics - intel onboard HD graphics 3000 (no external graphics card) RAM - 4GB none of my friends seem to experience this problem. it really gets annoying as it happens really often. please advice
