• Windows 7 pc freezes for an indeterminate amount of time after unlocking

  Not sure if this type of question is appropriate for this forum, but I've tried everything I can think of to solve this problem aside from format/reinstall. I recently got a new work PC (Dell optiplex 755) with windows 7 professional x64. Standard developer software installed for .net development: VS2008, VS2005, SQL management studio, office 2007, etc. Recently I've been having this weird problem where after I lock my pc, when I try to unlock it, the screen will be black for awhile after unlocking. I can ctl+alt+del and put my password in but then it just goes black. The amount of time on the black screen seems to be related to the amount of time I am away from my PC. If only away a few minutes, it'll take about a minute to get to the desktop. If away for an hour, could take up to 15 minutes. If I lock it and go home for the night, I have to restart my PC in the morning (I've let it sit for an hour after a night of being locked and nothing happened). It doesn't do it every time but definitely the majority of the time. One weird thing I've seen is that if I remote into my machine before trying to log back in it does not do it. I uninstalled all software back to the point when I remember it started happening and it still does it. I was using this PC for a few weeks without this problem happening at all. Anyone know what my next troubleshooting steps could be? My IT department tried to fix it by moving my old profile to another disk and having me log in, effectively recreating a profile from scratch but that didn't solve it. As I said above if this isn't the right forum for these types of questions please let me know. Thanks in advance!

• What method of MySQL mirroring should I use for this?

  I'm running an web application hosting service (basically hosting forums for free), and I have two remote servers at my disposal. The code for the application is stored on both servers and isn't a problem, but I'm wondering how to deal with the databases. When someone goes onto a site *.example-host.com, they are sent to one of the two servers and both must be capable of loading the forums from a database. The database must also have write access, for when new members register or post topics etc. The main requirement is speed, but uptime is also important (if a server goes out, the site should still work). I have a few options, but I'm inexperienced and not sure which to go with: 1) [PHP] Split the forum records 50:50 between the two servers. If a server does not have the record for a forum requested, it can request it from the other by remote MySQL and load it. This idea sounded okay, until I realised that 50% of the time, users would be waiting significantly longer for pages to load. I also realised that if one of the servers went down, half the forums would be inaccessible and registrations would have to be disabled. 2) [MySQL] Dual master replication. This would attempt to mirror the two databases and sounds perfect, but I've heard that it can be very problematic. I don't know how fast this is. 3) [MySQL] Use a standard replication, distribute read only queries on both nodes and read/write queries to the master. This sounds like a good option, but again, I'm not sure on speed. I also don't know what would happen if the master server went down. If you have any other suggestions, please post them :)

• How can I get (g)Vim to display the character count of the current file?

  I like to write tutorials and articles for a programming forum I frequent. This forum has a character limit per post. I've used Notepad++ in the past to write posts and it keeps a live character count in the status bar. I'm starting to use gVim more and I really don't want to go back to Notepad++ at this point, but it is very useful to have this character count. If I go over the count, I usually end up pasting the post into Notepad++ so I can see when I've trimmed enough to get by the limit. I've seen suggestions that :set ruler would help, but this only gives the character count via the current column index on the current line. This would be great if I didn't use paragraph breaks, but I'm sure you'd agree that reading several thousand characters in one paragraph is not comfortable. I read the help and thought that rulerformat would work, but after looking over the statusline format it uses I didn't see anything that gives a character count for the current buffer. I've seen that there are plugins that add this, but I'm still dipping my toes into gVim and I'm not sure I want to load random plugins before I understand what they do. I'd prefer to use something built in to vim, but if it doesn't exist it doesn't exist. What should I do to accomplish my goal? If it involves a plugin, do you use it and how well does it work?

• Does GetSystemInfo (on Windows) always return the number of logical processors?

  Reading up on this, and specifically reading the Microsoft docs, it looks like it should be returning the number of PHYSICAL processors, and that you should use GetLogicalProcessorInformation to figure out how many LOGICAL processors you have. When I search again, I find that MS did release some info on this (and a hot fix), here (spaces added to get through spam filter): http:// support. microsoft.com/ kb/936235 Reading that, it sounds like on Xp, pre-service Pack 3, GetSystemInfo reports the number of LOGICAL processors in the SYSTEM_INFO structure. It also reads to me that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, GetSystemInfo should be reporting the number of PHYSICAL processors (different to Windows XP pre-service Pack 3). Does anyone know what it actually does? Does GetSystemInfo really report the number of physical processors (on the same computer) differently, depending on which OS it's running on?

I'm very new to PHP with nearly 0 knowledge and have no idea how to add something like that. I did have a go at making a new variable with the string inside and then include that in the: mail($recipient, $subject, $formcontent, $mailheader) or die("Error!"); line but with no success. • Creating a smart text generator

  I'm doing this for fun (or as 4chan says "for teh lolz") and if I learn something on the way all the better. I took an AI course almost 2 years ago now and I really enjoyed it but I managed to forget everything so this is a way to refresh that. Anyway I want to be able to generate text given a set of inputs. Basically this will read forum inputs (or maybe Twitter tweets) and then generate a comment based on the learning. Now the simplest way would be to use a Markov Chain Text Generator but I want something a little bit more complex than that as the MKC basically only learns by word order (which word is more likely to appear after word x given the input text). I'm trying to see if there's something I can do to make it a little bit more smarter. For example I want it to do something like this: Learn from a large selection of posts in a message board but don't weight it too much For each post: Learn from the other comments in that post and weigh these inputs higher Generate comment and post See what other users' reaction to your post was. If good weigh it positively so you make more posts that are similar to the one made, and vice versa if negative. It's the weighing and learning from mistakes part that I'm not sure how to implement. I thought about Artificial Neural Networks (mainly because I remember enjoying that chapter) but as far as I can tell that's mainly used to classify things (i.e. given a finite set of choices [x1...xn] which x is this given input) not really generate anything. I'm not even sure if this is possible or if it is what should I go about learning/figuring out. What algorithm is best suited for this? To those worried that I will use this as a bot to spam or provide bad answers to SO, I promise that I will not use this to provide (bad) advice or to spam for profit. I definitely will not post it's nonsensical thoughts on SO. I plan to use it for my own amusement. Thanks!

• MS hotfix delayed delivery.

  I just requested a hotfix from support.microsoft.com and put in my email address, but I haven't received the email yet. The splash page I got after I requested the hotfix said: Hotfix Confirmation We will send these hotfixes to the following e-mail address: (my correct email address) Usually, our hotfix e-mail is delivered to you within five minutes. However, sometimes unforeseen issues in e-mail delivery systems may cause delays. We will send the e-mail from the “[email protected]” e-mail account. If you use an e-mail filter or a SPAM blocker, we recommend that you add “[email protected]” or the “microsoft.com” domain to your safe senders list. (The safe senders list is also known as a whitelist or an approved senders list.) This will help prevent our e-mail from going into your junk e-mail folder or being automatically deleted. I'm sure that the email is not getting caught in a spam catcher. How long does it normally take to get one of these hotfixes? Am I waiting for some human to approve it, or something? Should I just give up and try to get the file I need some other way? (Update: Replaced "[email protected]" with "(my correct email address)" to resolve Martín Marconcini's ambiguity.)

• Updating section in ConfigParser (or an alternative)

  I am making a plugin for another program and so I am trying to make thing as lightweight as possible. What i need to do is be able to update the name of a section in the ConfigParser's config file. [project name] author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 I then have text fields where user can edit project's name, author, email and year. I don't think changing [project name] is possible, so I have thought of two solutions: 1 -Have my config file like this: [0] projectname: foobar author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 that way i can change project's name just like another option. But the problem is, i would need the section # to be auto incremented. And to do this i would have to get every section, sort of, and figure out what the next number should be. The other option would be to delete the entire section and its value, and re-add it with the updated values which would require a little more work as well, such as passing a variable that holds the old section name through functions, etc, but i wouldn't mind if it's faster. Which of the two is best? or is there another way? I am willing to go with the fastest/lightweight solution possible, doesn't matter if it requires more work or not.

  We are about to set up SBS 2011 at my small company < 10 users. My collaborator wants to name the SBS domain "example.local" . I'm of the opinion we should name the SBS domain "corp.example.com" and setup DNS so the "corp" record is a NS record to the SBS server's private IP. FYI: "Example.com" isn't the real domain name and while the website is hosted outside our office, email will be stored on the SBS server in our office after passing though a spam filtering smart host hosted elsewhere too.

  I'm using Google Apps for my domain's e-mail via IMAP. Whenever I send mail to a mailing list, I don't receive a copy of my own mail back in my inbox. According to Google, this is a "feature." Is there a way to disable this "feature" so that all mail I send to mailing lists appears in my inbox just like all other e-mail? Perhaps something along the lines of this method for disabling Google's spam filter??

However the version yum installed was SpamAssassin version 3.2.5 and I am finding that this version has many outdated rules -- including a rule FH_DATE_PAST_20XX which marks all email from the year 2010 and forward as spam. Not good. yum says SpamAssassin is up to date -- what can I do to make yum keep SpamAssassin really up to date?

I currently use http://www.dnsbl.manitu.net/download/nixspam-ip.dump.gz - a digest of ix.dnsbl.manitu.net with 40,000 entries updated every 15 minutes. I'd like something more substantial though, so my question is: does such a thing exist?

  New to ServerFault , please pardon if my details are too much Linux box acting as Virtual Host for domain hosting. Runs CentOs. Runs Parallels Plesk 9.x Regardless of the following, the SPAM keeps flowing in at 1-3 / second. An explanation of the problem... "xinetd service listens for SMTP connections and forwards to qmail-smtpd. The qmail service only process the queue, but does not control messages coming into the queue...that's why stopping it has no effect. If you stop xinetd AND qmail, then kill any open qmail-smtpd processes, all mail flow comes to a stop SOMETIMES Problem is, qmail-smtpd is not smart enough to check for valid mailboxes on the localhost before accepting the mail. So, it accepts bad mail with a forged replyto address which gets processed in the queue by qmail. Qmail cannot deliver locally and bounces to the forged replyto address." We believe the fix is to patch the qmail-smtpd process to give it the intelligence to check for the existence of local mailboxes BEFORE accepting the message. The problem is when we try to compile the chkuser patch we run into failures due to Plesk Control Panel." Is anyone aware of something we could do differently or better?" Other things that have NOT worked thus far: -Turning off any and all mail processes (to check as an indicator that an individual account has been compromised. This has been verified as NOT the case.) -Turning off mail AND http server processes (in the case of a compromised formmail) -Running EXIM in lieu of Qmail( easy/quick install but xinetd forces exim to close and restarts qmail on its own) -Turned on SPF protection via Plesk GUI. Does not help. -Turned on Greylisting via Plesk GUI. Does not help. -Disabled Bounce notifications via command line That which MIGHT work but have complications: -Use POSTFIX instead of QMAIL (No knowledge of POSTIFX and don't want to bother with it unless anyone knows it has potential to handle backscatter WELL before investing time) -As mentioned above, compiling a chkusr patch, we believe will STOP this problem, along with qmail (because of plesk in the mix, the comile fails every time and Parallels Plesk support is unresponsive unless I cough up MONEY) If I don't clear out the SPAM from the outgoing mail queue nightly, then it clogs up with millions of SPAMs and will bring down the OUTGOING email services.
