• Does hiding images on 404 error affect SEO?

  I have a dynamic website that allows registered users to upload and display images on the their profile page. As each user may upload less than the maximum limit of 20 images, there would be some "empty" images on the page. I am using javascript to hide these empty images. The loading of the profile page would generate a series of 404 errors depending on the number of empty images. Would these 404 errors affect the SEO of the page and the website?

• .com domain transfer failing

  Hi, I'm trying to transfer one of my .com addresses between registrars. I'm down as the owner contact (confirmed working) and the losing registrar is down as the tech and admin contact. Last week I received an email stating that the domain transfer had been rejected by the losing registrar. I contacted the losing registrar and they denied that. My money from the winning registrar was refunded and I was told to try again. I've initiated the transfer again and received confirmation of pending transfer, I gave the correct EPP code and confirmed the transfer. Currently the status on the domain is set as OK, should it not be transfer pending? According to my name.com transfer page if the transfer is not authd in 5 days it will auto transfer anyway. I don't believe this will happen. Name.com have been really helpful but they can't really do much more now. The losing registrar is not being helpful hence me turning here. What can I do to make sure the domain transfers? The domain transfer is set to expire on the 17th. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  First off, does anyone know of a good place to get help with CodeIgniter? The official community forums are somewhat disappointing in terms of getting many responses. • Could Ajax + Caching be seen as cloaking?

  I have a website where we use a technique to speed up loading times based in a combination of AJAX + caching. Basically, when we have a section in a page with content which is slow to retrieve, we first look if it's cached. If it is, then we serve the content, if it's not, we serve a placeholder and then make an AJAX call in the client to retrieve the content, wich is now cached for subsequent requests. As a consecuence, sometimes you get the entire page content in the first request, and sometimes you get those placeholders, wich get filled inmediatly with the responses of the AJAX request. • setting up mod_proxy - plesk, apache, .htacess?

  I want to set up mod_proxy to work so that my blog is running under a subdirectory of my site rather than subdomain so i get the seo backlink benefit. What im looking to do is get my tumblr blog which is running at blog.mysite.com (which is in turn mapped from myblog.tumblr.com) will be running on mysite.com/blog How can i set up mod_proxy to do this, is it just something that i can setup from inside of my .htacess file ? Ive got my site hosted on an apache server, using plesk as a controll panel. • Configure PHP and Apache in Windows 7

  I installed apache server successfully in Window 7, 32bit system. It showed "It works" in the webpage. I also configured <?php phpinfo(); ?>file as info.php. But when I tried to open http://localhost/info.php in the browser, all I can get is exactly: <?php phpinfo(); ?>in plain text. I restarted Apache server everytime I made changes.   I have a web hosting account at HostGator (for a domain registered with GoDaddy), where I would like to only use email, and completely turn off the website/webserver (for that domain), such that it actually gives the following error like any other domain which isn't pointing to anything, so in Firefox it would be: Or in Chrome it would be: So I am not looking for just a blank page or server 403 error, but literally for it to act like it doesn't exist and the only way someone would know that the domain is in use, is if they WHOIS search it or know any of the email addresses on the main server. N.B. the domain is the parent domain in the HostGator account and other websites (which need to still be operational) are under it, but I'm thinking with DNS settings it can still be configured while keeping the one hosting account. How would I configure this?

• Need help with DNS. Registrar is NS, Web Site at WinHost, Email at eHost

  Need help moving a web site for a client, which I will call ClientABC. The web site is ClientABC.com, which is hosted at Rackspace, with their email hosted at eHost. We are transferring the site from Rackspace to WinHost and are keeping the email hosted at eHost. I would like the transfer to happen with little to no down time for the web site and email (email is most important). Current Config: Client owns domain and registrar is Network Solutions Domain name is managed by VendorX at Rackspace Web site is hosted on Rackspace servers Email is hosted at eHost Post-Move Config: Web site is hosted at WinHost Keep Email at eHost Here is my plan for the transfer: Copy the site files to WinHost and test to assure site is fully functional Set up the MX record in the WinHost account to point to eHost servers Change the DNS in Network Solutions from Rackspace to Winhost Questions: Will this work? What am I missing? Should I expect down time or any issues with email? I understand that there will be a period of time that traffic to the site is handled at both Rackspace and Winhost and that email traffic will be routed through both hosts as well. Will this cause issues? How will I know when the change is fully propagated and that Rackspace is out of the equation and WinHost is handling everything (so I can kill the Rackspace account) Thanks in advance!

• Google Analytics setting cookies on static content despite being on entirely separate domain

  I recently decided to comply with the YSlow recommendation that static content is hosted on a cookieless domain. As I already use the root of my domain (donaldjenkins.com) to host my website—on which Google Analytics sets a few cookies—that meant I had to move the CNAME URL for the CDN serving the static files from cdn.donaldjenkins.com to an entirely separate, dedicated domain. I purchased cdn.dj (yes, it's a real Djibouti domain name), hosted the files on the root (which contains nothing else, other than a robots.txt file) and set a CNAME of e.cdn.dj for the CDN. This setup works, but I was rather surprised to find that YSlow was still flagging the static files for not being cookie-free: here's a screenshot: The cdn.djdomain was new, and was never used for anything other than hosting these static files. Running httpfox on the site shows the _utma and _utmz Google Analytics cookies are being set on the static files listed above—despite their being hosted on an entirely separate, dedicated domain. • Rackspace Cloud Servers in Europe?

  We have setup a cloud virtual server at rackspace in the US, but we use it from Europe. I found out I am not quite happy with the response time. Of course I knew that there would be some latency. But I am not sure if it is the overseas latency (ping is 120ms) or also the minimal resources. It is the smallest machine, 256 MB, 10 GB, running a Mediawiki on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. The Instance lives in the rackspace ORD1 datacenter. As soon as they have opened their new facilities in the UK we plan moving the incstance there. But we are planing more machines already. The pricing is quite attractive. I don't really want to do some measuring and benchmarking and this stuff, so I am asking just for your opinions and it would be nice to hear what you can tell from your experience. Maybe someone who uses such small instances in the US. And what can we really expect if we upgrade to more resources.

• 301 redirect bulk aspx URLs on IIS

  We recently relaunched an old ASPX site as a new Drupal site on the same domain. No 301 redirect was implemented. I have outputted a list of 1000 URLs that need to be 301 redirected. Most of the URLs are the results of search queries that were committed on the website. I.E.: http://www.mysite.com/electronics/CommunityDetails.aspx?FirstLetter=%&ID=444 We are running a Drupal site on IIS using a PHP plugin. Is there a way I can wild card a redirect of all ASPX pages? I know I can do it with .htaccess but that doesn't apply here. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Pins on Pinterest link to 404 - yet link is valid

  this is a really strange one. I've set up a bunch of pins on Pinterest linking through to our services which all work fine. Then I decided to do the same on our blog articles (we use Wordpress), yet everytime I click the link (and I've done this on different computers) the link goes to a 404 page on our site. However the link is valid and if you right click the pin and open in new window it opens fine. I have contacted Pinterest who are next to useless. I have also tried different browsers, different computers and different Pinterest accounts. I can't see any weirdness in my htaccess files causing this so I'm a little stumped. Any suggestions?

• 'Development dashboard' web application

  Hi all, I am not sure if something like this exists in that it is ready out of the box. I currently have some web space that I use for various projects, and I would like to setup an area for some friends and I to develop web applications together. My ideal setup would be to create a folder, say, webdev.domain.com. We could all go to this domain, login, and then be able to setup new applications, pick which language will be used, setup database tables, allow HTML based file uploading, and create sub-folders to basically have a test bed for the applications. In retrospect, it seems like I'm describing a limited version of cpanel. I could come up with something in Drupal I'm sure, but I don't want to have to really spend time configuring much. Like I said, I want to install it and have minimal configuration. Does something like this exist (preferably in open-source)?

• IIS MIME type for XML content

  recently a third party plugin I'm using to display online magazines stopped working on mobile devices. According to their help page, this happens for people serving with IIS. Their solution is to set the MIME type .xml to "application/xml". It's by default set to "text/xml". Changing it does work, but would that have unintended side effects or is it actually the correct way and IIS just set it wrong?

• Exit link tracking with timestamped logs on 3rd party content

  I want to track clicks on exit links, that are placed in 3rd party content, for example on Twitter. I also need the timestamps of the clicks. Google Analytics can't be embedded in 3rd party content. Another solution is to use a URL shortener like bit.ly. However, bit.ly or goo.gl don't log the time of the click with any better granularity than a full day. su.pr shows the time for the past day in its analytics graph. The analytics download only includes the day, not the time. cli.gs was touted as having the most detailed analytics, yet it doesn't show the time either, and forces the user through a preview page. Any ideas?

• Google Analytics www 301 causing issues with In-Page Analytics

  The closest question I could find to my problem is This one. The similarity is: I have a profile in Google Analytics (GA) that has been collecting data for a year. The domain setting in GA is "http://example.com". The site, however, will redirect any non-www request, to www.example.com, via a typical .htaccess refinement. We do this to keep the traffic on the load balancers. I don't know the method the original user had in place, but we're doing a 301 on any non-www to the www equivalent. I believe this has to be somewhat standard. Where I differ from this question is in the error message I receive when trying to load the In-Page Analytics. I'm instead receiving: Error: The Website in your settings (http://example.com), redirects into a different domain. (http://www.example.com). In-Page Analytics currently works on only one domain. Note that www.example.com and example.com are NOT considered to be on the same domain. Also, make sure you're not redirecting from http:// to https:// or vice versa. I understand what's being explained, it just seems as though this can't be the end-all. I tried updating the Analytics settings, which from day one has been set as "One domain with multiple subdomains", but I don't see any options to change the URL ( which is currently set to http://example.com and not http://www.example.com ). I'd prefer not to have to change the URL if that was at all possible, but I can't seem to find any documentation or anything that provide any possible solutions.

There is a list of web analytics software on wikipedia, but it would be great to hear opinions from people with experience without having to try all of them. Here's what I can do: Choice (1): create classical Web version with all products in that page - http://www.myweb.com. create mobile Web version with all products in the page and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. But this may be long to (load + format), and may provide bad user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Choice (2): create classical Web version with all products in that page create mobile Web version with almost nothing but a Web page showing "wait", then download all products in the page using AJAX and use jQuery Mobile to format all nicely. Showing a "wait, loading" message gives far more time to do whatever I want and may provide better user experience - http://m.myweb.com. Question: if I choose solution (2), google won't read anything on the mobile version (because all products will be downloaded in the page using AJAX), so it wont be properly read by SEOs. What / how shall I do?

I get lots of analytics data, but am getting no information on Google searches in Webmasters, or Queries in Search Engine Optimisation in Analytics, even though I am getting keywords for traffic coming to my site from search engines. I have a test sub-domain with the same setup (except not HTTPS) that is getting some of this information through, even with much less data and visits. What could be wrong to stop me getting this information?

  I'm considering adding robots "noindex, follow" tags to the very numerous product data pages that are linked from the product style pages in our online store. For example, each product style has a page with full text content on the product: http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE Then many data pages with technical data for each model code is linked from the product style page. http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-1 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-2 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-3 It is these technical data pages that I intend to add the no index code to, as I imagine that this might stop these pages from cannibalizing keyword authority for more important content rich pages on the site.
