  • Detecting Browser Types?

    My client has asked me to implement a browser detection system for the admin login with the following criteria, allow these: Internet Explorer 8 or newer Firefox 3.6 or newer Safari 5 or newer for Mac only And everything else should be blocked. They want me to implement a page telling the user what browser they need to upgrade/switch to in order to access the CMS. Basically I need to know the best way to detect these browsers with PHP, distinct from any other browsers, and I've read that browser sniffing per se is not a good idea. The CMS is WordPress but this is not a WordPress question (FYI I am a moderator on the WordPress Answers site.) Once I figure out the right technique to detect the browser I'm fully capable to make WordPress react as my client wants, I just need to know what the best ways are with PHP (or worse case jQuery, but I much prefer to do on the server) to figure how what works and what doesn't. Please understand that "Don't do it" is not an acceptable answer for this question. I know this client too well and when they ask me to implement something I need to do it (they are a really good client so I'm happy to do what they ask.) Thanks in advance for your expertise. -Mike

  • Legal issues regarding embedding a toolbar into a browser [closed]

    We are in the process of developing a software that provides service to internet users and we would like to ask about the legal liabilities of some issues. Of course, everything is to be done with the consent of the user of our software but our concern is about third party tools and services that may be invoked/used by our product. In particular, these are the concerns: (1) Embedding a toolbar to an existing browser. This screenshot is an example, where the words in the highlighted toolbar are passed to www.google.com for searching, and the contents of the window are the results of the search. I want to know if any consent should be obtained before such a toolbar can be embedded in a web browser, whether there are any legal requirements by the web browser; whether different web browsers have different requirements (at least for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari). (2) Invoking a free website from that toolbar (like Google’s search page). The screenshot above demonstrates such an existing toolbar. (3) Full ownership and unrestricted access to the data entered to this toolbar. In the screenshot above, I want to take the words (translation english to spanish) and own them, i.e. storing them in my database and do some processing on them. (4) Ability to track the pages entered by the user starting from that free website. In the screenshot above, you can notice that the user opted only for the third result, whose URL is translate.google.com. I want to have access to this and all URLs clicked from this page for some processing as well. This is a commercial application, so I need a very concrete, precise and reference-supported answer.

  • Is there an alternative to HTML Web Sockets, now that Firefox 4 has disabled them?

    I've been checking out some of the latest multiplayer engines in HTML all supporting multi-user games (Very nice) - I believe all these engines use Web Sockets for communication. That’s why we’ve decided to disable support for WebSocket in Firefox 4, starting with beta 8 due to a protocol-level security issue. Beta 7 of Firefox has support for the -76 version of the protocol, the same version that’s included with Chrome and Safari. Beta 8 of Firefox 4 will remove that support. Anne van Kesteren of Opera also announced that Opera are dropping Websocket support. We are confident that other browser developers will follow. Is anyone aware of an alternate or is it Chrome or do we need to just sit and wait for the next release of the major browsers.   • How to overcome politics of the net (Google translate code refuses to work from a specific region)

    According to the FAQ's I am not sure if my question is a ok to ask or will be closed or should I post it in the meta or even I would blame some one for downvoting it. However it is one that has been bugging me since the trouble strated. Let me explain. I have this Web Site. On the site you can see that I had to actually remove the above from here, here, and here while left it here, here, here and here. If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

  • Diagnosing Bootstrap 3 Glyphicon Button Icons Not Showing

    I have a glyphicons in Bootstrap 3. They work very nicely here: latest Chrome latest Firefox latest Safari latest Explorer latest Android At one facility, the glyphicons don't show. The buttons come up blank. How do I troubleshoot? They are security sensitive there. I don't have systems or network access.. and am not in a position to request that. Troubleshooting with advanced tools isn't going to happen. Here's what I have access to: Internet Explorer 9 Behind a very secure firewall Sometimes, I think the glyphs not showing is the IE 9.. but my code should be addressing that. Sometimes, I think their firewall is blocking the CDN. Can I enter a URL into a browser to test if the CDN is there? Sometimes, I think my FB share and like buttons upset this facilty's firewall, and they tie the whole thing down. Any suggestions at how I begin to research this? Or maybe you have an outright idea for IE 9 and glyphs (though my code is very-very close to the demo's which work).

    I  was just pointed to comment on my friend Andrew Brust’s blog about Silverlight versus HTML 5. Well, my reaction is “hogwash”. Sure, HTML 5 is important and does some interesting stuff. Checkout what Bing.com is doing with it on some days and you can see. But to say that XAML is dead is nuts. I have been wrapping up bugs on a cross browser version of an application for awhile now. Whats the state of cross browser today? Well, better than a few years ago but far from perfect.  Each browser vendor interprets the specs in a little different way and you must account for them. The worst offender for major browsers? Apple and its Safari.  I had to make more changes for it than any other. Whats that got to do with XAML and SL/WPF?  Well, you write your SL code once and it runs in all browsers that support it, no changes. ipad does not? Well, they should be taken to court and forced too just like MS and others have been in the past for locking out competitors. Line of business applications? Write them in SL or WPF or both.  Use the power of XAML witch far out reaches html in any flavor and move on. We do need HTML 5 but its not a panacea nor will it replace all other technologies.

  • Is an app that does nothing but link to a web site functional enough to meet Apple's iOS guidelines?

    I don't hang out on Programmers enough to know whether this question is "ok", so my apologies if not. I tried to make the title obvious so at least it can be closed quickly :-) The question is simple. My employer wants "home screen presence" (or at least the possibility thereof) on iOS devices (also Android but I'm mostly interested in Apple at the moment). Our actual application will be a pure web-delivered mobile-friendly application, so what we want on the homescreen is basically something that just acts as a link to bring up Safari (or Chrome now I guess; not important). I'm presuming that that's more-or-less possible; if not then that would be interesting too. I know that the Apple guidelines are such that low-functionality apps are generally rejected out of hand. There are a lot of existing apps that seem (to me) less functional than a link to something useful, but I'm not Apple of course. Because this seems like a not-too-weird situation, I'm hoping that somebody knows it's either definitely OK (maybe because there are many such apps) or definitely not OK. Note that I know about things like PhoneGap and I don't want that, at least not at the moment.

  • How can I get cross-browser consistent behavior for TR heights within a table with a set height? [migrated]

    I have an arbitrary number of tables with an arbitrary number of rows in each, and all tables are the same height. My initial approach was to just set the overall height of the table and hope the rows were smart enough to distribute themselves appropriately. That's not the case. I have 4 different behaviors going on with 4 browsers, but I need them to all render at the very least in a similar way. Safari & Chrome (WebKit): All rows are equal height, creating scroll bars as needed and fitting within table height. Firefox: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Additionally, If the content of the rows does not take up all of the height, only the part of the table with content in it takes the background (though it seems, through use of Firebug, that the actual table [and TR] extend to the bottom of the proper table height). IE: All rows are the height necessary to fit their content, with the remaining rows overflowing out of the table. Obviously this only includes one version of each browser and additional variation would likely appear with more being tested. Ideally, a solution where the browser renders TRs with less content smaller than those with larger content, while still using scrolling within the variable height TRs when the overall height of the table is not enough would be optimum. I could potentially see a solution to achieve that with JS, but can it be done with CSS? Or, if not, can the behavior that WebKit displays be made to work across the browsers? Thanks!     We all know the importance ans significance of Headings for Professional Webmasters. These were known for professional developers as <h1>Heading 1</h1> h2 ... h6. As a daring webdeveloper I lately needed more short headings for complex structured document and i thought what the hell and went ahead and used in css h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6{ } h7{ } h8{ } h9{ } My experiment turned out to pay back. But only in Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc, not in Internet Explorer 8. Q1. Who(&When) decided that All headings should go upto h6, and not h4 or h7? Q2. Why h7 -h9 work perfect in all major browsers, except IE8? Q3. What is the significance for Bing,Yahoo and Googld in terms of recognition or headings h1 ~ h9? obviously h1 is more important than 2, but do they differentiate between h5 and h6? or not anymore after h3?

  • So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit?

    Google recently announced that they will no longer support older browsers on Aug 1st: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13639875 http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/our-plans-to-support-modern-browsers.html For this reason, soon Google Apps will only support modern browsers. Beginning August 1st, we’ll support the current and prior major release of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis. Each time a new version is released, we’ll begin supporting the update and stop supporting the third-oldest version. There is nothing worse than looking at the patching of code that takes place to support older browsers. If we could all move towards a standards only web (I'm looking at you IE9) then surely we could spend more time programming good web apps and less trying to make them run equally on terrible non standards compliant older browsers. So when can the rest of us expect to be able to tell our clients that we no longer support older browsers? Because it seems that large corporates will continue to run older browsers and even if google chrome frame can be installed without admin privileges (it's coming soon, currently in beta) we can't expect all users to be motivated to do this. I appreciate any thoughts.

    Yesterday Google released an updated Gmail application for Android 2.2 phones that supports the Priority Inbox feature—and more importantly, allows you to change your notifications to only alert you for important email. Let’s take a look. Note: If you’ve never used Priority Inbox, you should really give it a try—it rearranges your email into what is and isn’t important, and you can customize how it classifies messages easily. The idea is that it learns over time, so if you send a lot of emails back and forth with somebody, it will know that they are probably important—you can manually adjust the settings as well. To update the Gmail application, you’ll want to head into the Market and access Menu –> Downloads, where you should see Gmail in the list, and it should let you update from there.   • View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

    Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden.   • Browser Statistics for Geekswithblogs.net

    I love Google Analytics!  It helps me so much during my day-to-day maintenance of Geekswithblogs.net and our other sites.  I can see so much data about our visitors and come up with new ways of delivering more content to our readers so they can really get the most out of our community.  Browsers and Browser Versions is a big indicator for me to help decide what we can support and what we need to be testing with.  The clear browsers of choice right now are Chrome, IE, and Firefox taking up 94.1%.  The next browser is Safari at 2.71%.  What this really brings to my attention besides I better test well with Chrome, Firefox, and IE is that we are definitely missing an opportunity with Mobile devices.  We really need to kick up the heat when it comes to a mobile presence with Geekswithblogs.net as a community and the blogs that are on this site.  We need easy discovery of new content and easy tracking of what I like.  I am definitely on mission to make this happen and it will be a phased approach, but I want to see these numbers changes since most of us have 2 or 3 mobile devices we use for Social activities, but tools are lacking for interacting with technical data besides RSS readers.   • How to Use Vim-Style Keyboard Shortcuts for OS X Tab Navigation

    After switching to OS X when I got a new MacBook Air, one of the first things I needed to duplicate was my extremely customized AutoHotkey setup — the most important of which is using the J and K keys to navigate throughout tabbed windows easily. Yeah, I’m a Vim user. I’ve never been a fan of having to use CTRL + TAB to switch from one tab to the next — to start with, you have to move your hands from the home row, and it’s awkward, and why should I have to do that just because somebody decided that keyboard shortcut before tabs became popular? If you think about it, if tabbed browsers were popular back when keyboard shortcuts were being invented, they would have definitely reserved some of the good shortcuts for switching tabs. On Windows, I’ve always used an AutoHotkey script to make things the way I wanted it:  ALT + J and ALT + K for selecting previous and next tabs. Once you get used to it, it’s extremely awesome, and so much faster than using CTRL + TAB. Of course, I also hacked CTRL + T and CTRL + W into ALT + T and ALT + W so I could open new tabs and close them without moving my hands from the home row. Over on OS X, it turns out that it’s incredibly simple and easy to use CMD + J and CMD + K for next/previous tab navigation, and it works in most applications that support tabs, like Terminal, Safari, or Google Chrome.

  • Rebuilding a Mac Mini (early 2009) --- Update

    A couple of months ago I rebuilt the family’s Mac Mini (you can read the details in this post).  Things had gone pretty smoothly until a few weeks ago.  That’s when my wife mentioned that different applications would spontaneously crash. She kept track for a few days, and it turned out to be any or all of the applications that she uses (Safari, Quicken, Entourage, etc.) . I did some online research and didn’t really find too much – but then how do you do a proper Google search for “Mac OS 10.5.8 applications crash”.  The best suggestion seemed to be issues around 10.5.8, where people suggested that you go back to a previous version (something like 10.5.6).  The only way to do that is to completely reinstall the OS – which is what I had just done. SO, instead of doing that, I decided to just reapply the 10.5.8 update by downloading it from Apple (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update ).  I had installed the updates after the rebuild through the Apple Update mechanism built into OS X.  I thought maybe the combo update would reinstall some corrupted file (or something). I did this about a week ago and sure enough, we’ve had one crash this week with the same usage patterns as before.  I still have no idea what was causing the crashes, but at this point, I’m just going to declare it fixed and move on.

  • Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.1

    Last week, we released the latest update of Oracle Secure Global Desktop. Release 5.1 introduces a number of bug fixes and smaller changes but the most interesting one is definitely increased support for html5-based client access. In SGD 5.0 we added support for Apple iPads using Safari to connect to SGD and display your session right inside the browser. The traditional model for SGD is that you connect using a webbrowser to the webtop and applications that are displayed locally using a local client (tta). This client gets installed the first time you connect. So in the traditional model (which works very well...) you need a webbrowser, java and the tta client. With the addition of html5 support, there's no longer a need to install a local client, in fact, there is also no longer a need to have java installed. We currently support Chrome as a browser to enable html5 clients. This allows us to enable html5 on the android devices and also on desktops running Chrome (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). Connections will work transparently across proxy servers as well. So now you can run any SGD published app or desktop right from your webbrowser inside a browser window. This is very convenient and cool.

    For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites.  Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed.  So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post.  So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises.  No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g.  The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked).  Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev  and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables.  If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.

    Possible Duplicate: So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit? Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; AJAX, JQuery, webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks!

  • Unable to install Xdebug

    I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?
