• Bridging a non-persistent PPP connection to wireless (or wired) in Windows XP

  I have a 3G modem-like device (eMobile's D01NX, PC card style, for any Japan nerds out there) that I use to connect my PC to the Internet. I'd like to bridge this connection with another computer either via an ad-hoc wireless network, or a simple cross-over cable (either are options). However, when I open "Network Connections", I do not see the PPP connection (otherwise I could click both and bridge). I believe this is because there is software (provided by the vendor) that is handling the card directly and registering a PPP connection dynamically. When connected, an ipconfig at the command line yields: Ethernet adapter wireless: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.5.169 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Ethernet adapter lan: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected PPP adapter {B59EEDDE-A22B-48DF-93E5-04842B641257}: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 114.xx.xxx.xx Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 114.xx.xxx.xx (I've commented out my IP address for privacy reasons, but what does appear there is a functional Internet IP address.) • pure-ftpd: one readonly/non-deletable file in home directory

  Is there a way to have a file in the user's FTP home directory without the ability to modify/remove it from that directory over FTP? So the user has write permissions on his own home folder, thus the ability to remove files. An exception should be made for a single file, which has the same filename and contents for each account. The solution I'm thinking of right now to run a periodic script to check the presence of that file, and if not, put it back. But I wonder whether there's a better solution than this.

  I am behind a proxy which requires users to login during the first connection with a username and password with a HTML form. Thus, it is not handled with usual http://username:[email protected] and any attempt to access the internet from this setting falls into the login form. How could I automatically login to the proxy? In linux, what manages proxy stuffs when a command tries to access the internet? Thank you.

• Force running a program as non-administrator in Vista

  I've just installed, on Vista 32-bit, a program which in my opinion shouldn't require administrator rights. It's not installed in a system directory, and its purpose shouldn't obviously require any special privileges. However, the .exe has a UAC shield on it, and it asks me to elevate privileges immediately upon execution. I'm prepared to risk it doing nasty things with the privileges of my user account, but not prepared to risk elevating it. Is there anything I can do short of setting up a virtual machine for it (or downloading the source and compiling it myself)? (FWIW, the program in question is Pencil - pencil.evolus.vn/en-US/Downloads/Application.aspx - but I'm more interested in general answers than app-specific ones).

• Stripping Non-Text from a Scanned, OCRd PDF

  I have a PDF created from a scanned document. OCR was used to recognize text. In Acrobat, if I select text, and click 'copy with formatting', I can paste the formatted text into Word, so it seems that fonts and colors are also embedded in the document in addition to just plain text and possibly the size. Is there any way to use this information to create a PDF that just contains the formatted OCRd text, without the scanned image. Currently, my document only shows the scanned image, and the text is on an invisible layer. I would like to create a PDF document that removes the image that was scanned, and displays the formatted text that is currently hidden. The following post has a section on "How can we make the invisible text visible?" PDF has an extra blank in all words after running through Ghostscript However, doing this does not show the correct text formatting (that is retained when pasting in Word), and I also would like to remove the scanned image so that the final PDF just contains formatted (color, font, size) vector fonts, and no images.

• High latency due to non-presence of a transit provider in my country

  My ISP, a state owned incumbent, buys bandwidth from different transit providers. Whenever it buys transits it announces only a specific prefix (in most cases a hitherto unused) through the new transit AS. For e.g. if it runs out of bandwidth, it buys bandwidth from a new transit and announces a new prefix through it, while the same prefix is not announced (or announced with lowest metrics, so that the routes are very rarely used) via the old transits which continue to provide bandwidth to it. I am a business customer, so I have a fiber based link to the ISP and a tiny subnet is given to me. The subnet which is provide to me is part of a prefix which is announced by the AS of a transit who, it seems, do not have a presence in my country. So when I do a trace the packets, when they leave my ISP's AS, they take about 275ms to reach the transit providers core router, which is located in USA (half the world away). Also for upstream traffic my ISP uses a transit provider (tier 1) who has a presence in my country. But the return path is always through the transit which is in USA. So, average latency is 400ms. All the users of other ISPs in my country discover my subnet via USA. Even the traffic from neighboring countries, from Europe (which is much nearer) follows the path via USA. Sites using CDNs also resolve to ips in USA. I have informed the ISP NOC about the issue and I have asked them to provide an ip subnet belonging to a prefix announced by a local transit (preferably a tier 1 transit provider) and I am waiting for a reply. My question: Is it a serious issue that I must follow up to get it resolved? When I compared the latency on other providers in my country, it is, in most cases, less than half of my ISPs latency. Why my ISP doesn't announce all its prefixes to all of its transit providers, so that the packets can take efficient and nearest routes to reach prefixes that originate within its network?

• iptables to block non-VPN-traffic if not through tun0

  I have a dedicated Webserver running Debian 6 and some Apache, Tomcat, Asterisk and Mail-stuff. Now we needed to add VPN support for a special program. We installed OpenVPN and registered with a VPN provider. The connection works well and we have a virtual tun0 interface for tunneling. To archive the goal for only tunneling a single program through VPN, we start the program with sudo -u username -g groupname command and added a iptables rule to mark all traffic coming from groupname iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -m owner --gid-owner groupname -j MARK --set-mark 42 Afterwards we tell iptables to to some SNAT and tell ip route to use special routing table for marked traffic packets. Problem: if the VPN failes, there is a chance that the special to-be-tunneled program communicates over the normal eth0 interface. Desired solution: All marked traffic should not be allowed to go directly through eth0, it has to go through tun0 first. I tried the following commands which didn't work: iptables -A OUTPUT -m owner --gid-owner groupname ! -o tun0 -j REJECT iptables -A OUTPUT -m owner --gid-owner groupname -o eth0 -j REJECT It might be the problem, that the above iptable-rules didn't work due to the fact, that the packets are first marked, then put into tun0 and then transmitted by eth0 while they are still marked.. I don't know how to de-mark them after in tun0 or to tell iptables, that all marked packet may pass eth0, if they where in tun0 before or if they going to the gateway of my VPN provider. Does someone has any idea to a solution? • Apache does not serve non-locally

  I have a freshly installed instance of Fedora Core 16 inside VirtualBox using bridged networking. On it, as root I typed in: yum -y install httpd service httpd start ifconfig Inside the VM, I can open a web browser to 'localhost' and I get the Apache test page. It works. But in Windows (the machine hosting the VM), I point my browser to the IP address returned by ifconfig (192.168.2.122). The connection times out. I can go to a command prompt and ping the VM. Is there a firewall or something that comes with Fedora by default? Or is there something I need to change in a config file?

• Non existing GPO applying? WSUS

  I recently took my WSUS server offline. In the mean time I want the clients to update from the internet until I get WSUS up again. However, Windows Updates is tring to contact the old server and (obviously) failing to get new updates. I have updated the WSUS GPO to disabled. Checked DNS is resolving. Deleted WSUS GPOs. GPRESULT reports that policy is not being applied Run GPUPDATE /force No issues reported from DCDIAG I delete the registry keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate But the keys return after a reboot. What else can I try ?

• Setting up podcasting for a non-tech user

  I have a user who wants to start making podcasts, but they only have basic skills when it comes to technology. So, I was trying to get a process together that would be easy for them to follow. To upload files (the mp3's and rss feed files), I have an explorer shortcut for their FTP space. To record the podcast, I was going to either use audacity or PodProducer. For the RSS feed, I was looking for a podcast RSS generator of some sort. In my search for this, I've come across a lot of dead links and a lot of paid tools, so I haven't come up with anything too useful. Is there a free, reliable webservice or windows-based tool available that folks like to use?

• DoubleCommand Non-Functional on 10.6.3.

  I have a 1st or 2nd generation MacBook running 10.6.3. I want to remap my enter key to Ctrl and my right option key to enter (Emacs… yeah) and DoubleCommand seems to be precisely what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately, after having installed the latest version, it seems to be doing absolutely nothing. The correct settings are saved and active, but none of the remapping is taking effect. Are there any known issues with other OS X plug-ins (I run pretty heavily modified) or extensions that I should be aware of? What could the issue be? I initially tried to set only the User settings and then logged out and logged back in but nothing happened. I then tried saving them to System as well and logged out and in and nothing. Then I restarted the machine… twice… and nothing happened. Thanks in advance!

• Postfix - Block email from non-existent local addresses

  My question is very similar to this one, but for postfix. We keep getting emails from addresses like "[email protected]" delivered to other "@ourdomain.com" addresses. From my google research, I understand it might not be practical to verify the email originated from our IP or VPN (Although this would be ideal, so if you can think of a way to do this, let me know), but in most of these cases the sender address (ex. "accounting") is not a valid account. I imagine there must be a way to make sure that a local account exists before delivering the message.

• Links break in IE9 when using Wordpress plugins in non Wordpress Page

  I have a site that uses SEF URLs and htaccess RewriteRules to serve up the pages. This has worked fine for several years until the arrival of IE9. Now it appears that the links are not being rewritten and the site is dead in the water. I have tried different compatabilty modes, to no avail, and I've played with the Rewrite Rules over and over, tried different doctypes and a few other browser settings. I agree that it cannot in theory be a browser specific problem if the problem is with the htaccess file but this site works in IE8, firefox and chrome. I have run the rewriterule through a validator and it looks fine. Any ideas would be appreciated as I am running out of ideas. The site is www.marlboroughsounds.co.nz a sample link is http://www.marlboroughsounds.co.nz/walking/freedom-walk-queen-charlotte-track/4dfw and the rewrite rule thats not working looks like this: RewriteRule ^walking/.*/([a-z0-9_]*)/?$ /walking.php?act_code=$1 [L] The link fails and it serves up a browser 404 page, not even the custom 404 I have for the site. Any ideas would be much appreciated as I am stumped.

• Blocking non-virtual host access in Apache?

  I'm running an apache-server, with a bunch of virtual hosts for about seven domain names. Now I'd like to disallow access for clients who try to access my server using only its IP-adress. So: When someone accesses my website through www.domain.com, they reach the site hosted in /var/www/domain.com/public_html/. When someone enters the ip-address of the server they reach a 403 Forbidden-message. The problem with this is that they are theoretically able to reach my other sites through bruteforce, when getting http://11.22.33.44/domain.com/public_html/. I rather want them to reach a 403 Forbidden all the time, as long as they don't access my server by a valid domain name. How do I solve this problem?

• Solaris x86: Non working keys on keyboard (<, >, #, |)

  Hello everyone, I have a new installation of Solaris 10 10/09 on x86 hardware. The attached keyboard has a normal German layout. The system is configured accordingly by 'kbd -s'. The generic keys (letter, number, umlaut) work fine. Unfortunately some keys like <, , | or # do not. They produce no output on the text console at all. I tried PS/2 and USB keyboards. I cannot test it under X11 as it is currently not working. Thanks.

• Non-embedded font with different name across operating systems when printing HTML to PDF

  I create a document using HTML markup. I want to use Palatino, which is called Palatino on Windows and Palatino Linotype on Mac, so I specify my CSS accordingly: font-family: Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;. I then print to a PDF using PrimoPDF under Windows. It all looks good when viewed in Windows. But I want this PDF to look the same on a Mac, and the resulting file size (94KB) would suggest that the font (size 460KB) is not getting embedded by Primo, perhaps because it is a native font. How will this look? Will the PDF file format resolve this, or will the format of my PDF be wang when viewed under OSX? Please note that I do not want to embed the font. I used a web-safe font to avoid this need, and it just so happens that the one I picked does not have the same name in OSX as in Windows.

• Run non-interactive script in single user mode

  Is it possible to run a "startup" script when booting into single user mode? I need to be able to boot into single user mode, run my script, then reboot into multiuser mode without any human interaction. I've done a bunch of research and can't find anything that is clear on the topic, although of course I could replace something else that does run with a wrapper that also launches my script, but I'd prefer to do it in some official way. Ideally, the solution will work in FreeBSD 6 and up, but I'm willing to accept only new versions if it just doesn't exist in the older revs.

• How can Nagios handle non-threshold based plugins?

  I am writing a Nagios plugin to monitor trends of a certain storage resource utilization (e.g. gradual increases are fine, but an instantaneous/sudden increase or decrease in resource usage may indicate a problem). For what it's worth, it is reviewing the last N entries in an RRD file generated by a custom cacti data source/templates. What is the "right" way to handle Nagios notification config/implementation for this? The problem is that it the plugin would exit as warning/critical for one polling period, but in the next it would be fine (or 3 polling periods later, if I look at 3 polling periods worth of data). I guess the question is: should I just write it in such a way that it will alert for X polling periods, or should I find a way to write it such that manual intervention is required for it to clear (such as logging into the monitoring server or hitting a URL to run a script that submits a passive result)? Your input is appreciated, and if you have any tips for how to implement the latter I'm open to them (I can think of a few ways to possibly implement it)

• Keyboard shortcuts in non-English version of Microsoft Office

  I have a big problem with the Portuguese version of MS Office 2007 and 2010. The standard shortcuts that any common application uses are changed. Some shortcuts that are not working: Ctrl+S (save), Ctrl+F (find) and Ctrl+A (select all). I want to configure it to use the shortcuts of the English version. There is an option that allow to configure each shortcut separately. Furthermore, I have to configure for each app, if I configure in Word, I will have to configure again for Excel. How to use the shortcuts of the English version of MS Office regardless of the Office language? Thanks

• Linux (non-transparent) per-process hugepage accounting

  I've recently converted some java apps to run with linux manually-configured hugepages. I've got about 10 tomcats running on a system and I am interested in knowing how much memory each one is using. I can get summary information out of /proc/meminfo as described in Linux Huge Pages Usage Accounting. But I can't find any tools that tell me about the actual per-process hugepage usage. I poked around in /proc/pid/numa_stat and found some interesting information that led me to this grossity: function pshugepage () { HUGEPAGECOUNT=0 for num in `grep 'anon_hugepage.*dirty=' /proc/$@/numa_maps | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/dirty=//'` ; do HUGEPAGECOUNT=$((HUGEPAGECOUNT+num)) done echo process $@ using $HUGEPAGECOUNT huge pages } The numbers it gives me are plausible, but i'm far from confident this method is correct. • Opening a non-currupt PST file

The permissions look fine to me, and I had to repair the file, but now the PST file is repaired and I can open it from my Outlook (In other words, seems to be a local issue). Any recommendations on what to do to see why the user can't open it with their outlook?
