  • map.resources, :as => root?

    I'd like to map my Users to root - so '/:id'. I do the following now map.connect ':id', :controller = 'users', :action = 'show' ... but I'd also like the links that are generated by Rails to have this format. Can I do a map.resources ... :as = :root or something similar?

  • Mac Backup Plan

    I'm reviewing my backup plan and would appreciate any thoughts about what more I should do (if anything) to make sure I'm properly covered in case of all hell breaking loose. :-) I have one machine. 1) I run a nightly clone with SuperDuper. I alternate the clone drive weekly so I have two clones, one never more than a week old. 2) I use BackBlaze as a sort of Time Machine in the cloud. It runs all the time and keeps everything on my machine backed up online. 3) I sync all my 1Password logins, etc. to my iPhone once a week. ...And that's it. I feel pretty covered. But I'm always reading stuff like this: http://www.43folders.com/2010/03/15/yes-another-backup-lecture And that doesn't even mention online backup, and seems like a huge pain in the behind. But maybe I'm being naive? Should I have more backups? Thanks for any feedback. I really appreciate it.

    I am looking for a video streaming server solution, something like online TV server, with ability to make live broadcasts in the internet. What software could you recommend for that? What kind of hardware it should run on, should be there anything special? I am looking for a solution that could be scaled up to at least 1000 simultaneous users online with good resolution of video. I think it is good to have general answer on what direction to choose. But here more details on my specific case: I just looking for a solution almost from scratch. We have some video content that we've produced, but it is not delivered over internet yet. We do not tied to any particular vendor for now. We want to make 24 hours of steaming three 8 hour blocks with change of content every day. We want the ability to make regular live broadcasts. I guess we will need to have several options of streaming quality (low ~56 kb/s mid ~273 kb/s). Some terms just foreign to me (like play-truncation rate), if you could point out what parameters we should avare of, it would be great. Uplink to the internet is to be determined. We plan to start from something and scale up on the way. If you are already have some kind of media streaming server, just describe its configuration here (hardware, OS, software), peak number of concurrent users it serves. I think it could help people approaching this task.

  • Capturing time intervals when somebody was online? How would you impement this feature?

    Hello, Our aim is to build timelines saying about periods of time when user was online. (It really doesn't matter what user we are talking about and where he was online) To get information about onliners we can call API method, someservice.com/api/?call=whoIsOnline whoIsOnline method will give us a list of users currently online. But there is no API method to get information about who IS NOT online. So, we should build our timelines using information we got from whoIsOnline. Of course there will be a measurement error (we can't track information in realtime). Let's suppose that we will call whoIsOnline method every 2 minutes (yes, we will run our script by cron every 2 minutes). For example, calling whoIsOnline at 08:00 will return Peter_id Michal_id Andy_id calling whoIsOnline at 08:02 will return Michael_id Andy_id George_id As you can see, Peter has gone offline, but we have new onliner - George. Available instruments are Db(MySQL) / text files / key-value storage (Redis/memcache); feel free to choose any of them (or even all of them). So, we have to get information like this George_id was online... 12 May: 08:02-08:30, 12:40-12:46, 20:14-22:36 11 May: 09:10-12:30, 21:45-23:00 10 May: was not online And now question... How would you store information to implement such timelines? How would you query/calculate information about periods of time when user was online? Additional information.. You cannot update information about offline users, only users who are "currently" online. Solution should be flexible: timeline information could be represented relating to any timezone. We should keep information only for last 7 days. Every user seen online is automatically getting his own identifier in our database. Uff.. it was really hard for me to write it because my English is pretty bad, but I hope my question will be clear for you. Thank you.

    Hello, I am needing to build an application that stores data locally and then synchronizes with a remote MS SQL database. I am not sure how to go about doing this. Enter data offline on a form and store the data. Synchronize the data with a remote MS SQL database when online. There will be many users who enter data offline, the local database on each pc needs to update when online and grab the 30 most recent records for use offline. Example: Each day users will enter data on their "form". The users will be offline. The users will return to the office and need to sync with the "online" database. The next morning the users will need to sync with the online database before going offline. They will need to have offline access to the 30 most recent records. (They will use the 30 records for charting/graphing while they are offline) I am very new to building apps. I have VS 2010. I am wondering where to start? What language to use? Is there a "framework" for doing this type of app? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • maven test cannot load cross-module resources/properties ?

    I have a maven mantained project with some modules . One module contains one XML file and one parsing class. Second module depends on the first module. There is a class that calls the parsing class in the first module , but maven seems cannot test the class in the second module. Maven test reports : java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.Properties.loadFromXML(Properties.java:851) at foo.firstModule.Parser.<init>(Parser.java:92) at foo.secondModule.Program.<init>(Program.java:84) In "Parser.java" (in the first module) , it uses Properties and InputStream to read/parse an XML file : InputStream xmlStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream("Data.xml"); Properties properties = new Properties(); properties.loadFromXML(xmlStream); The "data.xml" is located in first module's resources/foo/firstModule directory , and it tests OK in the first module. It seems when testing the second module , maven cannot correctly load the Data.xml in the first module . I thought I can solve the problem by using maven-dependency-plugin:unpack to solve it . In the second module's POM file , I add these snippets : <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-dependency-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.1</version> <executions> <execution> <id>data-copying</id> <phase>test-compile</phase> <goals> <goal>unpack</goal> </goals> <configuration> <artifactItems> <artifactItem> <groupId>foo</groupId> <artifactId>firstModule</artifactId> <type>jar</type> <includes>foo/firstModule/Data.xml</includes> <outputDirectory>${project.build.directory}/classes</outputDirectory> </artifactItem> </artifactItems> </configuration> </execution> </executions> </plugin> In this POM file , I try to unpack the first module , and copy the Data.xml to classes/foo/firstModule/ directory , and then run tests. And indeed , it is copied to the right directory , I can find the "Data.xml" file in "target/classes/foo/firstModule" directory. But maven test still complains it cannot read the File (Properties.loadFromXML() throws NPE). I don't know how to solve this problem. I tried other output directory , such as ${project.build.directory}/resources , and ${project.build.directory}/test-classes , but all in vain... Any advices now ? Thanks in advanced. Also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The advantages of a cloud solution are undeniable. Availability, (SharePoint line offers a 99.9% uptime SLA) Reliability. Cost. Due to economies of scale, and no need to hire specialized dedicated staff. Scalability. Security. Flexibility – grow or shrink as you need to. If you are seriously considering SharePoint 2010 in the cloud, there are some things you need to know about SharePoint online. What will work - OOTB Customization, collaboration features etc. will work SharePoint Designer 2010 is supported, so no code workflows will work Visual Studio sandbox solutions, client object model will work. What won’t work - SharePoint 2010 online cloud environment supports only sandbox solutions. BCS, business connectivity services is not supported in SharePoint online. What you can do however is to host your services in Azure, and call them using Silverlight. Custom timer jobs will not work. Long story short, get used to Sandbox solutions – and the new way of programming. Sandbox solutions are pretty damn good. Most of the complaints I have heard around sandbox solutions being too restrictive, are uninformed mechanisms of doing things mired in the ways of 2002. .. or you could just live in 2002 too.   • Visual Studio 2010 localization resource files, how to add in strings automatically?

    I have a certain project that has a resource directory with a .resx for each language supported in the product. Right now I am adding these strings by hand using the visual studio 2010 IDE, but because there are a large number of strings, this manual management of these resources can get tricky, and something can easily get omitted in perhaps just 1 .resx file. Do you get a good resource addon for visual studio 2010, that will allow you to sync and validate a group of resx files? The built in functionality for handling resx seems the same as it was in 2008, and requires a lot of manual effort. I guess what would be nice would be to have the ability to define all resources in the main language, then have these strings carried across to the remaining languages automatically. Does such functionality exist? Even a good codeplex project perhaps?

  • Dashcode development for iPhone resources

    I've been developing web applications and iPhone applications for years. Now I want to create a web application oriented to the iPhone browser. I willing to use Dashcode, since it seams to have tons of cool features that make my web app look like an native iPhone app. The problem I face is twofold: On one side I don't know it Dashcode development will allow me to do all I want (session control, runtime datasources, etc); on the other side I'm having a hard time finding good documentation, tutorials and books on Dashcode programing for the iPhone.     Hi, On my SSAS 2008 instance if a backup/restore of any database is made to/from a UNC path I get an error : The following system error occurred from a call to GetOverlappedResult for Physical file: '\server\share\OLAPDB.abf', Logical file: '' : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. . Server: The operation has been cancelled. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices) Creating/copying/moving a file on the share of any size on the share using explorer or the command prompt works. The most useful link I could find is : http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Development/microsoft.public.win32.programmer.kernel/2004-07/0475.html Can anyone shed more light on what could be causing this error ? (I've posted the same question on the SSAS forums - just a heads up)

    Hi, I have a bunch of pictures I'm using in a C# project, and I'm trying to initialize them all for later use. There are over 50 of them and they all have the same name format Properties.Resources._#, where # is the picture number. What I'm trying to do is something like: for(int i = 0; i < 100; i++) { pics[i] = Properties.Resources._i; } How would I go about embedding the index into the name? Thanks, and happy holidays. EDIT: Just realized that if I had a way to embed the index in the name, I could just have a function that returns the specific picture based on the number given, so that would work too.

    What's the best solution for a photographer wanting to sell image files online? I tried zencart, but it's way over the top and their backend looks like a 3 year old designed it. Is there a free solution out there? One that has easily modifiable templates and isn't too tedious to add hundreds of pictures for sale?     Hi, I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem. Can somebody please provide info as to how to achieve this ? thanks,

  • Testing harness for online teaching?

    I have been asked to teach an online programming course, and I am looking for a test harness especially geared to education. Some students will have significant coding experience, but others will be total newbies. The course is an introduction to software development, mostly taught in C with some C++ and Java thrown in. In any case, I would like to read their source code only after a test suite has made sure that it compiles and executes properly. The students will also benefit from having a tool they can check their code against before submitting it. However, the Learning Management System my employer is using doesn't have such a system. Do you know of any LMS software that includes this feature? Which testing harness would you recommend in case I have to roll my own?
