Every software engineer should be required to take the Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs class. Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon also provide some great online courses.   • Which one is more popular?

    Which of IDE's I'm more likely to meet in an office? Borland or Visual Studio? I wouldn't ask this question here (I could use google and type which is better) only for a reason that in my previous cariere as an engineer I worked (and most of my friends) all the time on AutoCAD not on Microstation even though Microstation had always been better software (stability, conforming to standards, ease of use etc.).   • How do I get squid peers to talk SSL to each other?

    How would I set up a pair of squid proxies so that one uses the other as a parent and all traffic between them is encrypted using SSL? I've read the cache_peer documentation, but it's all very fuzzy to me which certs I need to create (and how), which server uses which cert, and so on. Is there a straightforward HOW-TO for this somewhere? Just to be clear, I don't want to know how to setup squid to proxy https requests, or as a reverse proxy for a web server that uses https.

  • Logitech keboard wrong keys under MAC OSX

    I have a Logitech MK250 keyboard I use with my Macbook. One day the "minor/mayor than" and the "back slash" keys flip their functionality, so I have to hit "backslash" to get a "minor than" symbol and press the "alt + minor than" key to get the "backslash". Is there any way to reverse this annoying behavior? I often switch to Windows, where the keys work the expected way, and I'm always missing the right key.

The current question is, does the Direct Access role offered by Server 2012 perform the same role as Forefront Unified Access Gateway 2010 does? I'm sure there are many differences, but my primary concerns are Sharepoint publishing, ADFS proxy, reverse proxy, remote connection, and o365 syncronization.

If NTFS has been successfully reverse engineered to a useful degree, then why is the kernel driver still only read-only, with write support being very dangerous.....just as it was 5 years agi?

    Can I user mono's AOT (Ahead of Time compilation) feature to natively "pre-compile" all or part of some of my own .NET DLLs (and or EXEs) to make them harder to reverse engineer? I'm using Windows (7 / x64 but I have an x86 XP machine as well) and .NET 3.5 (VS 2008) and I'm curious if mono/AOT can be/has been used for this purpose? (Tying them to x86 is acceptable at this point.) See also this question where I tried this and had no luck.

    I am evaluating the use of code generation for my flight simulation project. More specifically there is a requirement to allow "the average engineer" (no offense I am one myself) to define the differential equations that describe the dynamic system in a more natural syntax than C++ provides. The idea is to devise a abstract descriptor language that can be easily understood and edited to generate C++ code from. This descriptor is supplied by the modeling engineer and used by the ones implementing and maintaining the simulation evironment to generate code. I've got something like this in mind: model Aircraft has state x1, x2; state x3; input double : u; input bool : flag1, flag2; algebraic double : x1x2; model Engine : tw1, tw2; model Gear : gear; model ISA : isa; trim routine HorizontalFight; trim routine OnGround, General; constant double : c1, c2; constant int : ci1; begin differential equations x1' = x1 + 2.*x2; x2' = x2 + x1x2; begin algebraic equations x1x2 = x1*x2 + x1'; end model It is important to retain the flexibility of the C language thus the descriptor language is meant to only define certain parts of the definition and implementation of the model class. This way one enigneer provides the model in from of the descriptor language as examplified above and the maintenance enigneer will add all the code to read parameters from files, start/stop/pause the execution of the simulation and how a concrete object gets instatiated. My first though is to either generate two files from the descriptor file: one .h file containing declarations and one .cpp file containing the implementation of certain functions.   • Apache mod_proxy vs mod_rewrite

    What is the difference between using mod_proxy and mod_rewrite? I have a requirement to send certain url patterns through the tomcat, which runs on the same host but under port 8080. I know this is something for mod_proxy, but I"m wondering why I can't just use mod_rewrite, or what the difference is? Probably has to do w/ reverse proxy, and also when in the pipeline it gets handled? Thanks.

  • TTL for PTR records on Windows 2003 Server DNS

    When I look at the TTL (Time to Live) for PTR records (Reverse Lookup Zone) on one of our Windows 2003 DNS servers I see some are at 15 minutes, others are at 20. They have "Delete this record when it becomes stale" checked. These PTR records are for workstations that get IPs from Windows DHCP, so I think that creates the PTR records dynamically? How is TTL for these records set?

Occasionally, I'm using the stack trace to get a more detailed error reporting logs from the deployed applications; can this functionality be achieved without relying to those files?     I'm using Apache as reverse proxy for several different projects. PCI-DSS compliance scanning shows that my Apache is having HTTP CONNECT method enabled. as stated on Acunetix's site - http://www.acunetix.com/vulnerabilities/apache-proxy-http-connect-metho/ As far as I know, CONNECT is used by the web server to tunnel SSL to application server. Any suggestion how should I fix this? Otherwise, anyone know how should I perform the test if my Apache's HTTP CONNECT method is enabled/disabled?

  • Varnish -> Nginx -> Apache a good idea?

Would having Varnish as a cache in front of Nginx as a reverse-proxy and serving static files in front of apache for all heavy lifting be a good idea?
