• How to automate IE/Firefox to download some files from a https: website with Javascript links?

  Some of my users download several pdf files from an internet website regularly. They'd like to automate the process to save a few minutes every day, and most importantly, to minimize errors. I tried mechanize but failed as mechanize does not process javascripts. Since the download links in the remote site are all triggered by javescript, I am looking for solutions to automate the browser itself. Any recommendations? https remote server login and search are FORM POST file download link are JavaScripts on win32 IE or Firefox thanks!

• Impressing Potential Employers

  Where I am, I can't afford to get certification. I'm definitely not the best programmer, but I do know my junk. I've been writing software in C++ for over 8 years now and have a very good knowledge of the Win32 API. But when applying for jobs, I get rejected every time I send a resume. I've given my resume to recruitment firms and asked them what they think's wrong with it and they said the only thing they could think of is the fact that I don't have certifications to prove that I know my stuff. But in my resume, I explain my previous work and projects, and also note that upon request they can actually see what I've done. Is there anything that you would suggest that might help others to stop ignoring my resumes? Thank you

• SetWindowLongPtr with DialogBoxParam?

  Hey all- A while back I was writing a C++ program with the Win32 API that would display a dialog box and then listen to the messages it generated. At one point, I was interested in associating a piece of data with the dialog window. Were I manually creating the window and attaching a window proc, I'd just use SetWindowLongPtr to set the GWLP_USERDATA field to a pointer to the data to associate. However, in this case I was creating and displaying the window with DialogBoxParam, and it wasn't clear whether this function was associating that data with its own internal state. Since the MSDN didn't have a description of what would happen in this case, I ended up using some other approach to solve the problem. My question is this - is it safe to use SetWindowLongPtr to overwrite the GWLP_USERDATA value in a window created by DialogBoxParam? Thanks!

• ValidateRect vs BeginPaint

  From the MSDN documentation: The BeginPaint function validates the entire client area. The ValidateRect function should not be called if a portion of the update region must be validated before the next WM_PAINT message is generated.1 I've been programming with Win32 API for years, and I've never thought to call the ValidateRect function. A co-worker of mine today pointed that we were missing a call to ValidateRect, which fixed a bug we were having doing some high-speed animation using GDI (I know, an oxymoron) Can someone tell me whether or not a call to ValidateRect is neccessary after a BeginPaint/EndPaint pair? I have seen no documentation at MSDN that sheds light on this, and what documentation and examples I do see that you do not need to.

• On which Windows versions and configurations does my C++ app run?

  I've built a C++ application using MSVC 2010, default compile settings (note: Using "Multithreaded" instead of "Multithreaded DLL" to avoid the Microsoft C++ runtime being needed). I used only the STL and a few, old functions from the Win32 API (Windows.h). Where will my app run? (98-7?) Can the be any differences on how my app works on different PCs? As said: It's only a simple console app. I'd be glad if you could add some additional information if you have it!

• MySQL text field issues

  This is quite a noobish question, I have searched for a few hours now and I know this has to be simple. I am using XAMPP and I am trying to learn some more about using PHP and mySQL together. When I create the DB and the table for information to store, I tried insert info to the table and it stores it as a .dat file rather than text. • Using PHP OCI8 with 32-bit PHP on Windows 64-bit

  The world migration from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems is gaining pace. However I've seen a couple of customers having difficulty with the PHP OCI8 extension and Oracle DB on Windows 64-bit platforms. The errors vary depending how PHP is run. They may appear in the Apache or PHP log: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\php_oci8_11g.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. or Warning oci_connect(): OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that PATH includes the directory with Oracle Instant Client libraries Other than IIS permission issues a common cause seems to be trying to use PHP with libraries from an Oracle 64-bit database on the same machine. There is currently no 64-bit version of PHP on http://php.net/ so there is a library mismatch. A solution is to install Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and make sure that PHP uses these libraries, while not interferring with the 64-bit database on the same machine. Warning: The following hacky steps come untested from a Linux user: Unzip Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and move it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2. You may need to do this in a console with elevated permissions. Edit your PATH environment variable and insert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2 in the directory list before the entry for the Oracle Home library. Windows makes it so all 32-bit applications that reference C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 actually see the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 directory. Your 64-bit database won't find an Instant Client in the real, physical C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and will continue to use the database libraries. Some of our Windows team are concerned about this hack and prefer a more "correct" solution that (i) doesn't require changing the Windows system directory (ii) doesn't add to the "memory" burden about what was configured on the system (iii) works when there are multiple database versions installed. The solution is to write a script which will set the 64-bit (or 32-bit) Oracle libraries in the path as needed before invoking the relevant bit-ness application. This does have a weakness when the application is started as a service. As a footnote: If you don't have a local database and simply need to have 32-bit and 64-bit Instant Client accessible at the same time, try the "symbolic" link approach covered in the hack in this OTN forum thread. Reminder warning: This blog post came untested from a Linux user.

  Which platform as the edge today in 2012 with the rise of cloud computing, mobile development and the revolution of HTML5/Javascript between J2EE, .Net framework and IOS Objective-C ??? I want to start learning 1 language between Java, C# and Objective-C and get back into programming after 14 years and I don't know which to choose I need expert advices... I already know a little C++ and I remember my concepts in example pointers arithmetic, class etc so I tend to prefer learning C# and Objective-C but I've been told by some experienced programmers that Windows 8 could flop and .Net could be going away slowly since C++ and Html5/Javascript could be king in mobile is that true ? and that C# is more advanced compared to Java with Linq/Lambda... but not truly as portable if we consider android, etc but Java as a lot going for him too Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JRuby, JPython etc etc so I am lost Please help me, and don't close this right away I really need help and expert advices thanks you very much ANSWER : ElYusubov : thanks for everything please continue with the answers/explanations I just did some native C++ in dos mode in 1998 before Cli and .Net I don't know the STL,Templates, Win32 or COM but I remember a little the concept of memory management and oop etc I already played around a little with C# 1.0 in 2002 but things changed a lot with linq and lambda... I am here because I talked with some experienced programmers and authors of some the best selling programming books like apress wrox and deitel and they told me a few things are likely to happen like .Net could be on his way out because of Html5/Javascript combo could kill xaml and C++ native apps on mobile dev will outperform them by a lot... Secondly ios and android are getting so popular that mobile dev is the future so Objective-C is very hard to ignore so why get tied down in Windows long term (.Net) compared to Java (android)... but again android is very fragmented, they also said Windows 8 RT will give you access to only a small part of the .Net framework... so that's what they think so I don't know which direction to choose I wanted to learn C# & .Net but what if it die off or Windows 8 flop Windows Phone marketshare really can't compare to ios... so I'll be stuck that's why I worry is Java safer long term or more versatile if you want 'cause of the support for android ??

But, if you want the Quickie Guide on how to get Java up and running on the RPi, then follow these steps (which I'm doing right now as we speak, since I got my RPi in the mail on Monday. Woo-hoo!!!). So, follow along at home as I do the same steps here on my board... 1. Download the Win32DiskImager if you are on Windows, or use dd on a Linux PC: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/0.6/0.6/+download/win32diskimager-binary.zip 2. Download the RPi Debian Wheezy image from here: http://files.velocix.com/c1410/images/debian/7/2012-08-08-wheezy-armel/2012-08-08-wheezy-armel.zip 3. • Should UTF-16 be considered harmful?

  I'm going to ask what is probably quite a controversial question: "Should one of the most popular encodings, UTF-16, be considered harmful?" Why do I ask this question? How many programmers are aware of the fact that UTF-16 is actually a variable length encoding? By this I mean that there are code points that, represented as surrogate pairs, take more than one element. I know; lots of applications, frameworks and APIs use UTF-16, such as Java's String, C#'s String, Win32 APIs, Qt GUI libraries, the ICU Unicode library, etc. However, with all of that, there are lots of basic bugs in the processing of characters out of BMP (characters that should be encoded using two UTF-16 elements). For example, try to edit one of these characters: 𝄞 (U+1D11E) MUSICAL SYMBOL G CLEF 𝕥 (U+1D565) MATHEMATICAL DOUBLE-STRUCK SMALL T 𝟶 (U+1D7F6) MATHEMATICAL MONOSPACE DIGIT ZERO 𠂊 (U+2008A) Han Character You may miss some, depending on what fonts you have installed. These characters are all outside of the BMP (Basic Multilingual Plane). If you cannot see these characters, you can also try looking at them in the Unicode Character reference. For example, try to create file names in Windows that include these characters; try to delete these characters with a "backspace" to see how they behave in different applications that use UTF-16. I did some tests and the results are quite bad: Opera has problem with editing them (delete required 2 presses on backspace) Notepad can't deal with them correctly (delete required 2 presses on backspace) File names editing in Window dialogs in broken (delete required 2 presses on backspace) All QT3 applications can't deal with them - show two empty squares instead of one symbol. Python encodes such characters incorrectly when used directly u'X'!=unicode('X','utf-16') on some platforms when X in character outside of BMP. Python 2.5 unicodedata fails to get properties on such characters when python compiled with UTF-16 Unicode strings. StackOverflow seems to remove these characters from the text if edited directly in as Unicode characters (these characters are shown using HTML Unicode escapes). WinForms TextBox may generate invalid string when limited with MaxLength. It seems that such bugs are extremely easy to find in many applications that use UTF-16. So... Do you think that UTF-16 should be considered harmful?

This patch currently is available on Microsoft Windows x64 (64 bit), Linux x86 - 64 bit, IBM AIX on Power System (64 bit) and Oracle Solaris Sparc (64 bit). Please follow the standard process of applying this patch using opatch, i.e. stop all BI System processes via opmnctl, Stop WLS Managed and Admin Servers, Apply Patch, Start WLS Admin and Managed Servers, Check if all the J2EE applications are running fine, Start all BI System Processes via opmnctl command, and verify your fixes. It is advised to test this patch on Non Productions Instances first, run all the required tests / regressions and then move it to Production.    3. This Bundle Patch is cumulative to 11.1.1.5.0 BP1 (13562882) which was released in January 2012 on Linux x86 - 64 bit which contained around 64 bug fixes. Customers who have applied 11.1.1.5.0 BP1, will get expected OPatch conflict message, they can safely roll back BP1 prior to installing this BP2 or let opatch roll back BP1 during its application process.   4. Customer who have applied some one off patches and these one off patches are also part of 11.1.1.5.0 BP2, they can also roll back their existing one off patches after confirming that their fixes are part of BP2.    5. This Bundle Patch is not cumulative on top of 11.1.1.5.0, meaning this bundle patch does not contain all the one off fixes that were delivered on top of 11.1.1.5.0. All the remaining one off fixes delivered so far, will be available in next scheduled bundle patch i.e. 11.1.1.5.0 BP3. Please check the README file and let support know if your existing fixes are not part of BP2, so that support can open One Off Backport (OOB) request to have them included in next patch i.e. BP3.   6. 11.1.1.5.0 BP3 is in planning stages, and dates for it's availability will be announced in next couple of weeks.

• As a tooling/automation developer, can I be making better use of OOP?

  My time as a developer (~8 yrs) has been spent creating tooling/automation of one sort or another. The tools I develop usually interface with one or more API's. These API's could be win32, WMI, VMWare, a help-desk application, LDAP, you get the picture. The apps I develop could be just to pull back data and store/report. It could be to provision groups of VM's to create live like mock environments, update a trouble ticket etc. I've been developing in .Net and I'm currently reading into design patterns and trying to think about how I can improve my skills to make better use of and increase my understanding of OOP. For example, I've never used an interface of my own making in anger (which is probably not a good thing), because I honestly cannot identify where using one would benefit later on when modifying my code. My classes are usually very specific and I don't create similar classes with similar properties/methods which could use a common interface (like perhaps a car dealership or shop application might). I generally use an n-tier approach to my apps, having a presentation layer, a business logic/manager layer which interfaces with layer(s) that make calls to the API's I'm working with. My business entities are always just method-less container objects, which I populate with data and pass back and forth between my API interfacing layer using static methods to proxy/validate between the front and the back end. My code by nature of my work, has few common components, at least from what I can see. So I'm struggling to see how I can better make use of OOP design and perhaps reusable patterns. Am I right to be concerned that I could be being smarter about how I work, or is what I'm doing now right for my line of work? Or, am I missing something fundamental in OOP? EDIT: Here is some basic code to show how my mgr and api facing layers work. • How to snap a 2D Quad to the mouse cursor using OpenGL 3.0?

  I've been having issues trying to snap a 2D Quad to the mouse cursor position I'm able : 1.) To get values into posX, posY, posZ 2.) Translate with the values from those 3 variables But the quad positioning I'm not able to do correctly in such a way that the 2D Quad is near the mouse cursor using those values from those 3 variables eg."posX, posY, posZ" I need the mouse cursor in the center of the 2D Quad. I'm hoping someone can help me achieve this. I've tried searching around with no avail. • Apache - child process exited with status 255

  I am running Windows 7 64-bit with an older version of (Apache 2.0.59) and PHP 5.2 - just switched from XP and wanted to keep the same versions. Everything will initially be working fine, but then I'll be trying to load a page and Apache crashes. I'll get an error in the browser that says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Then Apache stops running. Sometimes it can be restarted, but then crashes again on the next page load. Sometimes it can't even be restarted at all. Looking in the Apache error logs, I see a series of messages that goes something like: [notice] Apache/2.0.59 (Win32) PHP/5.2.13 configured -- resuming normal operations [notice] Server built: Jul 27 2006 15:55:03 [notice] Parent: Created child process 1220 [notice] Child 1220: Child process is running [notice] Child 1220: Acquired the start mutex. [notice] Child 1220: Starting 250 worker threads. [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. I have just come from Win XP where I never had any problems - is this an issue with my Apache version on Win7? Or perhaps it's a configuration issue?   I have set up a Microsoft Standalone CA on 2008 R2 as a root CA. I'm trying to setup a subordinate Enterprise CA. I generated the certificate request, and submitted it to the root CA. Then, I ran the following command to set the expiration date to 20 years (the request ID is 5): certutil -setattributes 5 "ValidityPeriod:Years\nValidityPeriodUnits:20" Then, I approved the request, but it failed. The Request Status Code is: The specified time is invalid. 0x8007076d (WIN32: 1901) The Request Disposition Message is: Denied by Policy Module 0x8007076d, The requested validity period is invalid. Confirm that the validity period or expiration data and time specified in the request does not extend beyond the validity period of the CA certificate, the certificate template, and the CA. The validity period of the CA can be verified by running the following commands: certutil -getreg ca\validityPeriod & certutil -getreg ca\ValidityPeriodUnits The validity period of the CA certificate is 40 years (expires in 2052). The template condition doesn't apply since this is a standalone CA. The result of those commands is Years and 1, respectively. It appears that I will need to change the CA's validityPeriod and validityPeriodUnits. But, I want to keep the default expiration for a request at 1 year. Is there a way to set a maximum and default expiration, or am I going to have to change it, issue the certificate, and then change it back?

• XP machines on Domain not reporting WMI Data in a 2003 Server Environment

  I am running into a very quirky issue and I hope someone out there can help. We use a monitoring program for several networks we oversee that is WMI data dependent for a great deal of it's functionality. The Windows 2000 Professional workstations, as well as the 2003 servers in our network report WMI data fine, the Windows XP professional machines will not let me view them from within the WMI snap in for MMC (they return a Win32: Access Denied) error. I am of course logged in with an account with domain admin privileges on the domain controller when I attempt it. DCOM is enabled in component services, and the remote security option is set to allow as well. If we remove the machine from the domain and rejoin it, some workstations will show up as WMI enabled temporarily and then when I try to access them again later I get the access denied error again out of the blue. Hoping someone out there has had a similar problem or they have advice. I have had this problem with the firewall turned on or off. Thanks for your time! -Az

• Legacy non-dpi-aware application resolution scaling?

  Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

• LNK2005: delete already defined error in VC++

  Hi, I am newbie to VC++, so please forgive me if this is stupid. I have got 7 solutions under one project. Six of these build static libraries which is linked inside 7th to produce an exe. The runtime configuration of all the projects is MultiThreaded Debug. sln which is used to produce exe is using MFC other slns use standard runtiem library. I tried changing those to MFC, but still I am getting the same error. All the six slns build successfully. When I try to build exe - get the follwoing error: nafxcwd.lib(afxmem.obj) : error LNK2005: "void __cdecl operator delete(void *,int,char const *,int)" (??3@YAXPAXHPBDH@Z) already defined in tara_common.lib(fileStream.obj) This is weird because tara_common is one of the libs that I generated and fileStream.cpp is file that is just using delete on a pointer. I built it in verbose mod, so I am attaching the output.   Greeting, I have Windows Server 2008 Server Core. I want to configure this server to host php websites using IIS 7. I installed and configured IIS7 to run php using the steps in this website: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/philpenn/archive/2009/07/19/deploying-iis-7-5-fastcgi-php-on-server-core.aspx Now I’m facing a problem that when I request my php website I would get this error. Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. I check the even log and I found these details too: Activation context generation failed for "C:\php\php-cgi.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. I search about this error and I found a solution for it but which is to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86). I installed but still I’m getting same error. Please help me to solve this problem and let me know if you want to know more info about my issue.

• OpenVPN and TomatoVPN

  Wondering if someone can help me with the following. I have updated my Linksys router with TomatoVPN and used the following config: Interface Type:TAP Protocol:UDP Port:1195 Firewall Custom Authorization Mode:Static Key I have then inserted the static key generated in OpenVPN saved and started the service. connect.ovpn. # Use the following to have your client computer send all traffic through your router # (remote gateway) remote (entered my DNS/DHCP servers external IP address here) port 1195 dev tap secret static.key.txt proto udp comp-lzo route-gateway 192.168.1.1 redirect-gateway float I've then placed my static key in a file in the same directory as your connect.ovpn (static.key.txt) Now OpenVPN is installed on a laptop that I use at home. I have plugged in the laptop to my home connection and started connect.ovpn The Local Area Connection is connected as 'Home Network 3' - and when I start OpenVPN it is connected as 'Local Area Connection 2' and this is showing as 'Unidentified Network' and it appears there is no network access. TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 appears to be the adaptors name and the IP and DNS properties are set to automatic. If I open up the OpenVPN GUI it shows an error message saying "Connecting to connect has failed". Looking at the error message behind this pop-up one line says "TCP/UDP Socket bind failed on local address [undef]:1195 Address already in use [WSAEADDRINUSE] Could anyone possibly help me further with this please?

  Hello I have this big problem with my Xampp server, for some reason the Apache service stops running after a few seconds it as been started, and i have no idea what the problem is, and the error logs don't say much about the problem. I have done some changes to the httpd.conf file but, it as worked well for allot of time. Added some virtual hosts. Enabled xdebug. As this happen to anyone, that could tell me whats the problem?
