• Windows 7 wont boot from any boot loader except for 'Windows Boot Manager' after partition resize

  I have a triple boot system on a single SSD. OSX, Windows 7, and Ubuntu. I use Chimera (basically another version of Chameleon) as my boot loader. Usually I can boot all 3 without any issue, but after using GParted to make my Ubuntu partition 2 Gigs larger, Windows 7 throws me an error when trying to boot to it from either Chimera or Grub. The error is consistently: 0xc000000e "cant find \Boot\BCD" (slightly paraphrased). However, I can still get into Windows by selecting "Windows Boot Manager" from the boot options in my bios. I've already tried several known fixes for similar issues, including bootrec /rebuildbcd (and variations), and BootRec.exe/fixMBR + BootRec.exe/fixBoot. Ive also tried Chkdsk. At best this has made it so Windows 7 boots on it's own by default (making me have to reinstall Chimera and change back my boot settings in the bios). At worst this made it so Windows wont boot period. Now I'm back full circle where I started. A detail that might be useful is that bootrec /rebuildbcd says that the number of found Windows installations is 0. How do I get it back so I can boot Win7 through another boot loader so I don't have to manually select it in the bios? Preferably without a reinstall.

  I got several computers connected to my home wireless network and I want to make use of some of the features of Windows 7 for home networks but I can't seem to get them working: How do I keep files and folders in sync between specific computers? I'm not talking about Live Sync. How can I stream to Windows Media Player from another computer? I would appreciate if someone could provide me some links / solutions that address my needs. Thanks! To anyone who thinks this question is a duplicate and wants to close it please bare in mind the following: I'm not looking for additional software, I know I can use Live Sync, Dropbox and so on but I'm asking this: how do I configure Windows 7 to sync files between my home network - no Internet required! This has something to do with shared folders and offline files in Windows 7, but I can't get it to work. • Stuck part-way through installation of windows 7, upgrade product key, cannot cancel or finish installation

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 (to get rid of Windows 8). I started the installation, cleared the minefield Microsoft has put in to stop me uninstalling 8, but forgot that my Windows 7 disk is an upgrade. So now I'm part-way through the 7 install. Can't go back, can't convince Microsoft that I have a valid key; I tried stopping the Windows 7 install and booting XP first, but I can't either - the unfinished Windows 7 install prevents that. Where's the way out? Update: Having spent some time with a Microsoft operative, I know why I can't install XP; this recent computer doesn't support IDE SATA mode, only AHCI. So the problem is: - straight install - key not valid - XP first before upgrade - XP cannot install due to newer HDD interface.

• Windows 7 Not Recognizing Any Hardware, Linux Recognizing Hardware

  I have a new desktop computer with two SSDs: one running Linux Mint 15 (SSD1), the other running Windows 7 (SSD2). My mint runs perfectly - USB wireless adapter is recognized, SSD2 (connected by SATA) is recognized and accessible through the filesystem, Ethernet works, etc. However, my Windows 7 is not recognizing any of these devices - even plugging in a regular ethernet cable doesn't work. It seems that it's not recognizing any network adapters, and it also doesn't recognize SSD1, connected to the mainboard by SATA. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows multiple times, but the problem persists. I used the Windows 7 CD to install Windows on a machine previously, and that time around, I didn't have any problems, which leads me to suspect that this might be a hardware issue, specifically with the mainboard. My mainboard is an MSI-7641 model, the 760GM-P34 FX. It uses an AMD Chipset and an AMD processor. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

  After searching in my start menu and clicking to "see more results", I got an error dialog: It "seems" that it should be search-ms:query=document an not search:query=document but where can I fix this? Additional info: New user account don't have the problem. Windows 7 Ultimate - RTM Disabling/Enabling again "Windows Search" (in Start Control Panel Programs Turn Windows Features on or off) doesn't fix it. (There's a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Search in my registry that's not there normally.) - outdated see comments...   I try to move with the VT100 keys here in GNU Screen: $ screen $ hello <left><left> ESC C ESC D but "ESC D" deletes until the end of line and ESC C does nothing. Perhaps, I am not using right VT100 emulation. How can I test it and how can I get the ASCII codes working from commandline with Screen?

• DYNDNS setup with TightVNC on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hey all, i seem to be having a problem with getting ports to forward on my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC. I already set all my port forwarding for 5900/5800 on my router for my PC's IP address (192.168.1.22) but when i try to use the TightVNC PFPortChecker on port 5900 it tells me its not opened! I can not even connect to my DYNDNS server name (xxxxxxx.dyndns.org). As a side note, i am running Windows XP SP3 within a VirtaulBox inside Windows Server 2008 R2 but running the PFPortChecker in Windows 2008 R2 brings the same results as it does in the VM. I also added them to the Windows Firewall Advanced Security form to add those inbound ports for full access. What could i possibly be missing? Thanks for your time! David

• How to consistently enable screen sharing with iChat

  I am unable to consistently get screen sharing in iChat to work. When I select an online buddy, under the Buddies menu the options "Share my screen with Bob" and "Ask to Share Bob's Screen" are disabled. Sometimes starting a chat with that person will enable the screen sharing but often not. Once its enabled it works fine but I have no idea what the key is to getting it enabled. It seems fairly random when it works. This is over the public internet using Google Talk. Both ends are running OSX 10.5.

• Win 7 - Restore Favorites in Windows Explorer

  Hi all, have this issue - the Favorites link in windows explorer doesn't work. I can't drag and drop anything to it, I can't 'Add current location to Favorites'. Clicking on 'Restore Favorites' does nothing. I can't remember when this started, but I assume I accidentally deleted the Favorites folder. I should probably mention that my user profile is ntfs-junctioned to D:\Users\myname. I tried creating a new Favorites folder, giving it all possible permissions, but that doesn't work. I tried to look in the registry, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell folders HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell folders HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell folders HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell folders I played with the values in there (pointing to C:\Users\myname\Favorites, D:\Users\myname\Favorites), but nothing seemed to help. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Gnu screen with local scrollback buffer?

  I'm using a remote server over a very slow and unreliable network connection. So, I want to use gnu screen in order not to lose what I'm doing whenever I get disconnected. But I want a local scrollback buffer, on my local computer, so that scrollback doesn't have to go across the network, which is incredibly slow. Is there either something like gnu screen, but with a local scrollback buffer; or else a way of using gnu screen with a local scrollback buffer?

• mac osx cannot connect to windows 7 machine

  I have a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) setup on a network with several Windows 7 machines. When trying to place a large file on a Windows share the connection to the Windows share gets lost and I am unable to reconnect until I reboot the Mac. I know this is on the Windows side because the Mac can connect and transfer files to Server 2008 and XP without issue. Looking in the log file I see this message SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 12 I have tried restarting the com.apple.netauth.sysagent service but that did not resolve the situation. I can do an nslookup to the Windows 7 machine, but trying to ping the machine by hostname always gives a hostname lookup failure (I can ping via IP address). I cannot connect to the machine via IP adress either. Any help would be appreciated.

• Windows Server 2008 repair logonui.exe

  I'm fairly certain some data on my server got corrupted and from a dialog box that popped up I think one of the things that got corrupted is logonui.exe I think this because while the server goes through BIOS and the windows loading splash screen, when it finished that it goes to a black screen with just a mouse cursor that I can move around. But most of the services come back up, for example: DNS, DHCP, DFS, and the print service all load up while it's sitting on the black screen. Is there anything I can do to repair the logon screen? Maybe copy a file off another copy of Server 2008, get something off the original media (which I have) or bring the system back to a previous restore point? Thanks! I'm in the weeds right now...

• Applying memory limits to screen sessions

  You can set memory usage limits for standard Linux applications in: /etc/security/limits.conf Unfortunately, I previously thought these limits only apply to user applications and not system services. This means that users can by bypass their limits by launching applications through a system service such as screen. I'd like to know if it's possible to let users use screen but still enforce application limits. Jeff had the great idea of using nohup which obeys user limits (wonderful!), but I would still like to know if it's possible to mimic the useful windowing features of screen. EDIT: It seems my screen sessions are now obeying my hard address space limits defined in /etc/security/limits.conf. I must have been making some mistake. • Windows Media Center doesn't see my movies

  I am trying to configure my Windows Media Center (Windows 7 Ultimate). I selected folder with my movies and added it to the library, but when I went to the movies library, it says "There are no items in this library yet - Windows Media Center is searching for media files in the background...". I have all necessary codecs installed, Windows Media Player opens those movies correctly. When I right click on the file - Open with - Windows Media Center it also plays them without any problem. Any ideas why they don't appear in the libraries?

• prevent domain controller using wpad for windows update

  We have a 2012 domain controller in an environment where we are running a web proxy auto discovery (WPAD) setup for client devices, and that proxy server requires authentication. However windows update does not support proxy servers requiring authentication. So we want to prevent windows update on our servers from using the WPAD proxy settings. On a domain member server we can log in to the local administrator account (not domain admin) and un-tick the the "Auto detect proxy settings" in IE internet options and that fixes the issue on those servers. But a domain controller does not have a local admin account, as that account is the domain admin account. Doing this to the domain admin account on the DC does not prevent it from using WPAD. Our whole purpose of running a proxy server that requires authentication is so we can identify what the users on our session based remote desktop servers are doing on the internet. • How to wake from screensaver directly to the login screen in Ubuntu

  (a.k.a. How to switch users without entering password, part II) (see part I) I've got Ubuntu 9.10 with a user account for my wife, and one for myself. "Wake-from-screensaver" should result in "choose user" without having to enter any password. I know how to do that in Windows, but I'm not good with Linux (yet). Part of this was answered in my earlier question which helped me get past the login screen without passwords (after booting, and after choosing "switch user"), but once the screensaver kicks in and I wake it up again, the system does not present the "choose user" screen. Instead, it either turns off the screensaver and presents the desktop of the most recent user, or (if the screensaver is set to lock the screen) prompt for the user's password (which can be handily surpassed by clicking the "switch user" button and choosing the same user again). So, the login ("choose user") screen has been dealt with. How do I make the (any) screensaver return to the login screen at wake, rather than to the current user's desktop? Windows can do this, I'm sure Linux can too - but how?

• Windows 8 Restore Problems

  I created a Windows 8 system image backup on a separate drive before I installed Linux, and during the Linux installation process I accidentally wiped out Windows. I now want to restore my Windows 8 backup that I have on the separate drive. I created a repair USB stick and I followed the directions according to this article. After selecting the image on the hard drive, I get this error: "To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the hard drive." I don't know what this means! The drive partitions are different now then they were when I backup up, so I don't know if that matters. I re-installed Windows and I can restore my files from this backup, but I don't think this covers the registry, etc. I want a full restore. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or how to restore in a different way? Thanks!

• Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

• Tab title is wrong with ssh/screen on osx

  I am doing ssh -t host screen -D -RR in OS X (10.9) terminal tabs. My ~/.screenrc is identical on all remote hosts and contain the following line: hardstatus string "%H(%n:%t)$USER %h" My ~/.bashrc is also identical on all hosts. When I login to host host_u (Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS) running Screen version 4.00.03jw4 (FAU) 2-May-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is host_u(1:bash)sds ~, as expected. When I login to host host_c (CentOS release 6.3 (Final)) running Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06, the tab title on the OS X terminal is ~/FooBar (which is the local OS X directory from which I ran the ssh/screen command. Problem: the hardstatus line does not work on host_c.

• Start a screen through svcadm with Solaris 11

  I am running into a problem when trying to start a detached screen through a Solaris 11 service. This service controls nginx. When I reboot the system, the screen doesn't start, but if I issue svcadm disable nginx then svcadm enable nginx manually, it does. The rest of the init script functions correctly on a reboot (the nginx daemon starts, etc). The part of the service that triggers the screen looks like this: case "$1" in start) echo "Starting Nginx Logger: \c" /usr/bin/screen -S nginxLogger -d -m /opt/php-5.3.10/bin/php $loggingProg LogRetVal=$? [ $LogRetVal -eq 0 ] & echo "ok" || echo "failed" .... The log (/var/svc/log/network-nginx\:default.log) shows that $LogRetVal is returning 0, and $loggingProg is just pointing to a PHP script. If it matters, when I manually restart the service, I'm logged in as root. I'm unsure how to check if it's a permission issue (I'm new to Solaris, I've recently switched from CentOS/RHEL).

  I've upgraded recently from Windows Vista to Windows 8. When I try to rate my computer, it accesses DirectX 9 performance, then processes to DirectX 10 tests: And it gets stuck at this point. In 5–10 minutes, it shows error message: The video card is rather old: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm pretty sure it does not support DirectX 10. Why does Windows assess it with DirectX 10? And how can I make it skip DirectX 10 tests and get the system rating? The driver was installed automatically by Windows 8 from Windows Update.   I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: WindowsLiveWriter Problem Signature 01: CreateThis Problem Signature 02: 115 Problem Signature 03: System.UriFormatException Problem Signature 04: 15.4.3555.308 Problem Signature 05: 2.0.50727.5456 Problem Signature 06: Windows Live Writer OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Since I was unable to start windows live writer at all, I tried uninstalling it and removing all files associated with it in my "C:/users/[username]/appdata" folder. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

• windows phone application repeatedly opens while phone is plugged in

  I plugged my windows phone 8 phone into my Windows 8.1 computer for the first time. It asked what to do when a WP8 phone is plugged in. I chose "Open Windows Phone". All worked fine for about an hour. Now when I connect my phone, the Windows Phone application repeatedly opens. I can't even type in another window, as it continues to steal focus to "switch to" the Windows Phone application. Anyone have any ideas to fix this?
