• Best Diff Tool?

- by ila
For all my present Diff / Merge needs I'm using Beyond Compare; when I decided to buy a license for it I tried other similar tools, both payware and freeware. Now BC is at version 3, and I think it's a great tool... but what are your experience in this field? Do you think there is something better? And what are the feature you like best on your favorite Diff tool? EDIT I'm recollecting here a list of the tools mentioned in the answers below, in order of preferences (more or less), separating pay- from free- ware and indicating supported operating system. Hope this helps. • CreateProcess doesn't pass command line arguments

- by mnh
Hello I have the following code but it isn't working as expected, can't figure out what the problem is. Basically, I'm executing a process (a .NET process) and passing it command line arguments, it is executed successfully by CreateProcess() but CreateProcess() isn't passing the command line arguments What am I doing wrong here?? int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { PROCESS_INFORMATION ProcessInfo; //This is what we get as an [out] parameter STARTUPINFO StartupInfo; //This is an [in] parameter ZeroMemory(&StartupInfo, sizeof(StartupInfo)); StartupInfo.cb = sizeof StartupInfo ; //Only compulsory field LPTSTR cmdArgs = "[email protected]"; if(CreateProcess("D:\\email\\smtp.exe", cmdArgs, NULL,NULL,FALSE,0,NULL, NULL,&StartupInfo,&ProcessInfo)) { WaitForSingleObject(ProcessInfo.hProcess,INFINITE); CloseHandle(ProcessInfo.hThread); CloseHandle(ProcessInfo.hProcess); printf("Yohoo!"); } else { printf("The process could not be started..."); } return 0; } EDIT: Hey one more thing, if I pass my cmdArgs like this: // a space as the first character LPTSTR cmdArgs = " [email protected]"; Then I get the error, then CreateProcess returns TRUE but my target process isn't executed. Object reference not set to an instance of an object

• What is the worst programming language you ever worked with? [closed]

- by Ludwig Weinzierl
If you have an interesting story to share, please post an answer, but do not abuse this question for bashing a language. We are programmers, and our primary tool is the programming language we use. While there is a lot of discussion about the best one, I'd like to hear your stories about the worst programming languages you ever worked with and I'd like to know exactly what annoyed you. I'd like to collect this stories partly to avoid common pitfalls while designing a language (especially a DSL) and partly to avoid quirky languages in the future in general. This question is not subjective. If a language supports only single character identifiers (see my own answer) this is bad in a non-debatable way. EDIT Some people have raised concerns that this question attracts trolls. Wading through all your answers made one thing clear. The large majority of answers is appropriate, useful and well written. UPDATE 2009-07-01 19:15 GMT The language overview is now complete, covering 103 different languages from 102 answers. I decided to be lax about what counts as a programming language and included anything reasonable. Thank you David for your comments on this. Here are all programming languages covered so far (alphabetical order, linked with answer, new entries in bold): ABAP, all 20th century languages, all drag and drop languages, all proprietary languages, APF, APL (1), AS400, Authorware, Autohotkey, BancaStar, BASIC, Bourne Shell, Brainfuck, C++, Centura Team Developer, Cobol (1), Cold Fusion, Coldfusion, CRM114, Crystal Syntax, CSS, Dataflex 2.3, DB/c DX, dbase II, DCL, Delphi IDE, Doors DXL, DOS batch (1), Excel Macro language, FileMaker, FOCUS, Forth, FORTRAN, FORTRAN 77, HTML, Illustra web blade, Informix 4th Generation Language, Informix Universal Server web blade, INTERCAL, Java, JavaScript (1), JCL (1), karol, LabTalk, Labview, Lingo, LISP, Logo, LOLCODE, LotusScript, m4, Magic II, Makefiles, MapBasic, MaxScript, Meditech Magic, MEL, mIRC Script, MS Access, MUMPS, Oberon, object extensions to C, Objective-C, OPS5, Oz, Perl (1), PHP, PL/SQL, PowerDynamo, PROGRESS 4GL, prova, PS-FOCUS, Python, Regular Expressions, RPG, RPG II, Scheme, ScriptMaker, sendmail.conf, Smalltalk, Smalltalk , SNOBOL, SpeedScript, Sybase PowerBuilder, Symbian C++, System RPL, TCL, TECO, The Visual Software Environment, Tiny praat, TransCAD, troff, uBasic, VB6 (1), VBScript (1), VDF4, Vimscript, Visual Basic (1), Visual C++, Visual Foxpro, VSE, Webspeed, XSLT The answers covering 80386 assembler, VB6 and VBScript have been removed.

• How can I get controller type and action info from a url or from route data?

- by Rob Levine
How can I get the controller action (method) and controller type that will be called, given the System.Web.Routing.RouteData? My scenario is this - I want to be able to do perform certain actions (or not) in the OnActionExecuting method for an action. However, I will often want to know not the current action, but the "root" action being called; by this I mean I may have a view called "Login", which is my login page. This view may include another partial view "LeftNav". When OnActionExecuting is called for LeftNav, I want to be able to determine that it is really being called for the "root" aciton of Login. I realise that by calling RouteTable.Routes.GetRouteData(actionExecutingContext.HttpContext), I can get the route for the "root" request, but how to turn this into method and type info? The only solution I have so far, is something like: var routeData = RouteTable.Routes.GetRouteData(actionExecutingContext.HttpContext) var routeController = (string)routeData.Values["controller"]; var routeAction = (string)routeData.Values["action"]; The problem with this is that "routeController" is the controller name with the "Controller" suffix removed, and is not fully qualified; ie it is "Login", rather than "MyCode.Website.LoginController". I would far rather get an actual Type and MethodInfo if possible, or at least a fully qualified type name. Any thoughts, or alternative approaches? [EDIT - this is ASP.Net MVC 1.0]

• iPhone Developer Program registration for UK trading partnership

- by CMLloyd
I have been looking into this for a long time and have found no definitive answer. I can't be the only person to have faced this problem and am wondering how you guys proceeded in similar cases. I'm part of a partnership, based in the UK, trading as, lets say, "ABCD iPhone Apps" (legally, a perfectly legitimate way of doing business). I've now developed an iPhone App and I want our company name ("ABCD iPhone Apps") to appear as the seller in the App Store. This way, any future Apps that we develop can all get released under the "ABCD iPhone Apps" aegis too. Given that we aren't an incorporated company (and probably never will be), is it possible for us to enroll in the iPhone Developer Program as a company? Or is there another solution? (Note: I do also have an Individual account but that is for personal projects and is in no way connected to the partnership, and shall remain that way) EDIT: I've just spoken to a guy at ADC UK and he tells me there is no other solution. For a company to be approved on the Developer Program, Apple needs to see a copy of the company's Certificate of Incorporation during the registration process, otherwise no approval.

• JPEG artifacts removal in C#

- by Arcturus
Hi all I am building a website for a club that is part of a mother organisation. I am downloading (leeching ;) ) the images that where put on profile pages of the mother organisation to show on my own page. But their website has a nice white background, and my website has a nice gray gradient on the background. This does not match nicely. So my idea was to edit the images before saving them to my server. I am using GDI+ to enhance my images, and when I use the method MakeTransparent of Bitmap, it does work, and it does do what its supposed to do, but I still have these white jpeg artifacts all over the place. The artifacts makes the image so bad, I am better off not making the image transparent and just leaving it white, but thats really ugly on my own website. I can always at a nice border with a white background of course, but I rather change the background to transparent. So I was wondering if and how I can remove some simple JPEG artifacts in C#. Has anyone ever done this before? Thanks for your time. Example image: Transformed image:

• Friend Assemblies in C#

- by Tim Long
I'm trying to create some 'friend assemblies' using the [InternalsVisibleTo()] attribute, but I can't seem to get it working. I've followed Microsoft's instructions for creating signed friend assemblies and I can't see where I'm going wrong. So I'll detail my steps here and hopefully someone can spot my deliberate mistake...? Create a strong name key and extract the public key, thus: sn -k StrongNameKey sn -p public.pk sn -tp public.pk Add the strong name key to each project and enable signing. Create a project called Internals and a class with an internal property: namespace Internals { internal class ClassWithInternals { internal string Message { get; set; } public ClassWithInternals(string m) { Message = m; } } } Create another project called TestInternalsVisibleTo: namespace TestInternalsVisibleTo { static class Program { ///
/// The main entry point for the application. ///
[STAThread] static void Main() { var c = new Internals.ClassWithInternals("Test"); Console.WriteLine(c.Message); } } } Edit the AssemblyInfo.cs file for the Internals project, and add teh necessary attribute: [assembly: AssemblyTitle("AssemblyWithInternals")] [assembly: AssemblyDescription("")] [assembly: AssemblyConfiguration("")] [assembly: AssemblyCompany("Microsoft")] [assembly: AssemblyProduct("Internals")] [assembly: AssemblyCopyright("Copyright © Microsoft 2010")] [assembly: AssemblyTrademark("")] [assembly: AssemblyCulture("")] [assembly: ComVisible(false)] [assembly: Guid("41c590dc-f555-48bc-8a94-10c0e7adfd9b")] [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.0.0")] [assembly: AssemblyFileVersion("1.0.0.0")] [assembly: InternalsVisibleTo("TestInternalsVisibleTo PublicKey=002400000480000094000000060200000024000052534131000400000100010087953126637ab27cb375fa917c35b23502c2994bb860cc2582d39912b73740d6b56912c169e4a702bedb471a859a33acbc8b79e1f103667e5075ad17dffda58988ceaf764613bd56fc8f909f43a1b177172bc4143c96cf987274873626abb650550977dcad1bb9bfa255056bb8d0a2ec5d35d6f8cb0a6065ec0639550c2334b9")] And finally... build! I get the following errors: error CS0122: 'Internals.ClassWithInternals' is inaccessible due to its protection level error CS1729: 'Internals.ClassWithInternals' does not contain a constructor that takes 1 arguments error CS1061: 'Internals.ClassWithInternals' does not contain a definition for 'Message' and no extension method 'Message' accepting a first argument of type 'Internals.ClassWithInternals' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Basically, it's as if I had not used the InternalsVisibleTo attrbute. Now, I'm not going to fall into the trap of blaming the tools, so what's up here? Anyone?

• Changing values of (multiple) dropdown lists from one dropdown list in MVC

- by Mario
I have an MVC page, with some controls inside a form. The part I need help with: I have a bunch of dropdowns in a list. All dynamically named (drop{0}, where {0} is the id (really, its just a counter: 1,2,3,etc)). At the top of the list, I want to have another dropdown that will update ALL the dropdowns when it is changed. I've done similar things with checkboxes (check one and all are checked, etc) so I assume this can be done, hopefully just as simple. I'd prefer it to be on the client side, so once the form is submitted, the new values will be added/updated to the database. Edit: The values of ALL the dropdowns are static. They are all a list of 1-50, representing the number of cards I need to produce for a given record. This is how I did the checkbox: $("#chkSelectAll").click(function() { $(".checkbox").attr('checked', this.checked); }); Any thoughts on where to begin? Thanks!

• Error while dynamically loading mapi32.dll

- by The_Fox
Our application uses Simple MAPI to send e-mails. One of our clients has problems sending e-mail from a session on his terminal server. The mapi32.dll is loaded with a call to LoadLibrary which succeeds, but then our application tries to get the addresses of the functions MAPILogon, MAPILogOff, MAPISendMail, MAPIFreeBuffer and MAPIResolveName. The problem is that GetProcAddress fails for those functions with an ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (code: 5) except for MAPIFreeBuffer. It looks like some sort of security thing. How can I fix this or should I use another method to send mail? • jQuery Drag/Drop problem: mousemove Event not binding for some elements

- by saturdayplace
Using the latest jQuery/UI that are hosted at Google. I've got the following markup:

One

Two

And the following javascript: $(document).ready(function(){ // Droppable callbacks function dragOver(overEvent, ui_object) { $(this).mousemove(function(moveEvent){ console.log("moved over", this); }); } function drop_deactivate() { $(this).unbind(); } function drag_out() { $(this).unbind(); } // Actual dragging $("#treeContainer li").draggable({ revert: true, revertDuration: 0 }); // Actuall dropping $("a").droppable({ tolerance: "pointer", over: dragOver, deactivate: drop_deactivate, out: drag_out }); }); If I drag the first li down over the second, the mousemove function fires (and firebug logs the output). But if I drag the second li up over the first, the mousemove function doesn't fire. You can see this live at http://jsbin.com/ivala. Is there a reason for this? Should I be trapping the mousemove event in some other way? Edit: It appears as thought the mousemove() event isn't binding for earlier elements than the one currently being dragged (should be bound upon their mouseover).

• Median Filter a bi-level image with JAI

- by Mark
I'd like to apply a Median Filter to a bi-level image and output a bi-level image. The JAI median filter seems to output an RGB image, which I'm having trouble downconverting back to bi-level. Currently I can't even get the image back into gray color-space, my code looks like this: BufferedImage src; // contains a bi-level image ParameterBlock pb = new ParameterBlock(); pb.addSource(src); pb.add(MedianFilterDescriptor.MEDIAN_MASK_SQUARE); pb.add(3); RenderedOp result = JAI.create("MedianFilter", pb); ParameterBlock pb2 = new ParameterBlock(); pb2.addSource(result); pb2.add(new double[][]{{0.33, 0.34, 0.33, 0}}); RenderedOp grayResult = JAI.create("BandCombine", pb2); BufferedImage foo = grayResult.getAsBufferedImage(); This code hangs on the grayResult line and appears not to return. I assume that I'll eventually need to call the "Binarize" operation in JAI. Edit: Actually, the code appears to be stalling once I call getAsBufferedImage(), but returns nearly instantly when the second operation ("BandCombine") is removed. Is there a better way to keep the Median Filtering in the source color domain? If not, how do I downconvert back to binary?

• SHA1 hashing in Delphi XE

- by Leonardo Herrera
Hello, I'm in the process of implementing XML digital signatures. I'm starting with little steps, so right now I want to solve the problem of SHA-1 hashing. There are lots of questions about this in SO: Digitially Sign Key with Lockbox Encryption library for Delphi Convert this php digital signing to Delphi Delphi: is there a version of LockBox for Delphi-XE Delphi 2010 Cryptography libraries ...and probably more. However, I'm using Delphi XE. So far, I've tried LockBox 2 (both the Songbeamer and Sourceforge versions), Lock Box 3, DCPCrypto2 and some others (Hashes is an easy to use unit which uses Windows crypto functions) I prepared a small test rig that gives me the following: LockBox2 FAILED: 1 ('abc') Got: '9f04f41a848514162050e3d68c1a7abb441dc2b5' Expected: 'a9993e364706816aba3e25717850c26c9cd0d89d' FAILED: 2 ('abcdbcdecdefdefgefghfghighijhijkijkljklmklmnlmnomnopnopq') Got: '51d7d8769ac72c409c5b0e3f69c60adc9a039014' Expected: '84983e441c3bd26ebaae4aa1f95129e5e54670f1' LockBox3 FAILED: 1 ('abc') Got: '9f04f41a848514162050e3d68c1a7abb441dc2b5' Expected: 'a9993e364706816aba3e25717850c26c9cd0d89d' FAILED: 2 ('abcdbcdecdefdefgefghfghighijhijkijkljklmklmnlmnomnopnopq') Got: '51d7d8769ac72c409c5b0e3f69c60adc9a039014' Expected: '84983e441c3bd26ebaae4aa1f95129e5e54670f1' DCPCrypto2 FAILED: 1 ('abc') Got: '9f04f41a848514162050e3d68c1a7abb441dc2b5' Expected: 'a9993e364706816aba3e25717850c26c9cd0d89d' FAILED: 2 ('abcdbcdecdefdefgefghfghighijhijkijkljklmklmnlmnomnopnopq') Got: '51d7d8769ac72c409c5b0e3f69c60adc9a039014' Expected: '84983e441c3bd26ebaae4aa1f95129e5e54670f1' Hashes Test 1 passes Test 2 passes Have you succeeded in compile the mentioned libraries under Delphi XE and make them give the appropriate values? I'm particularly interested in DCPCrypt2 SelfTest procedure. Edit: I've added this answer with the fixed source code. Thank you all for your help, it is most appreciated.

• Two different assembly versions "The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assem

- by snicker
I have a project that I am working on that requires the use of the Mysql Connector for NHibernate, (Mysql.Data.dll). I also want to reference another project (Migrator.NET) in the same project. The problem is even though Migrator.NET is built with the reference to MySql.Data with specific version = false, it still tries to reference the older version of MySql.Data that the library was built with instead of just using the version that is there.. and I get the exception listed in the title: ---- System.IO.FileLoadException : Could not load file or assembly 'MySql.Data, Version=1.0.10.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The version I am referencing in the main assembly is 6.1.3.0. How do I get the two assemblies to cooperate? Edit: For those of you specifying Assembly Binding Redirection, I have set this up: <configuration> <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="MySql.Data" publicKeyToken="c5687fc88969c44d" culture="neutral"/> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="0.0.0.0-6.1.3.0" newVersion="6.1.3.0"/> </dependentAssembly> </assemblyBinding> </runtime> </configuration> I am referencing this the main assembly in another project and still getting the same errors. If my main assembly is copied local to be used in the other assembly, will it use the settings in app.config or does this information have to be included with every application or assembly that references my main assembly?

• Is VB Really Case Insensitive?

- by Otaku
I'm not trying to start an argument here, but for whatever reason it's typically stated that VB is case insensitive and C languages aren't (and somehow that is a good thing). But here's my question: Where exactly is VB case insensitive? When I type... Dim ss As String Dim SS As String ...into the VS2008 IDE the second one has a warning of "Local variable 'SS' is already declared in the current block". In VBA VBE, it doesn't immediately kick an error, but rather just auto-corrects the case. Am I missing something here with this argument that VB is not case sensitive? (Also, if you know or care to answer, why would that be a bad thing?) EDIT: Why am I even asking this question? I've used VB in many of it's dialects for years now, sometimes as a hobbyist, sometimes for small business-related programs in a workgroup. As of the last 6 months I've been working on a big project, much bigger than I anticipated. Much of the sample source code out there is in C#. I don't have any burning desire to learn C#, but if there are things I'm missing out on that C# offers that VB doesn't (an opposite would be VB.NET offers XML Literals), then I'd like to know more about that feature. So in this case, it's often argued that C languages are case sensitive and that's good and VB is case insensitive and that is bad. I'd like to know A) how exactly is VB case insensitive because every single example in the code editor becomes case sensititive (meaning case gets corrected) whether I want it or not and B) is this compelling enough for me to consider moving to C# if VB.NET case is somehow limiting what I could do with code?

• GNU Make: How to call $(wildcard) within $(eval)

- by bengineerd
I'm trying to create a generic build template for my Makefiles, kind of like they discuss in the eval documentation. I can't seem to get the wildcard function to work within an eval. The basic code I'm having issues with looks like this. SRC_DIR = ./src/ PROG_NAME = test define PROGRAM_template $(1)_SRC_DIR = $(join $(SRC_DIR), $(1)/) $(1)_SRC_FILES = $(wildcard $$($(1)_SRC_DIR)*.c) endef $(eval $(call PROGRAM_template, $(PROG_NAME))) all: @echo $(test_SRC_DIR) @echo $(test_SRC_FILES) @echo $(wildcard $(wildcard $(test_SRC_DIR)*.c) When I run make with this, the output is ./src/test [correct list of all .c files in ./src/test/] Basically, the wildcard call within PROGRAM_template is not being eval'd as I expect it. The call results in an empty list. The join call is being eval'd correctly though. So, what am I doing wrong? My guess is that $$($(1)_SRC_DIR) is not correct, but I can't figure out the right way to do it. EDIT Once this was solved, it didn't take long for me to hit another issue with eval. I posted it as a new question at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2428506/workaround-for-gnu-make-3-80-eval-bug

• Hibernate: "Field 'id' doesn't have a default value"

- by André Neves
Hi, all. I'm facing what I think is a simple problem with Hibernate, but can't get over it (Hibernate forums being unreachable certainly doesn't help). I have a simple class I'd like to persist, but keep getting: SEVERE: Field 'id' doesn't have a default value Exception in thread "main" org.hibernate.exception.GenericJDBCException: could not insert: [hibtest.model.Mensagem] at org.hibernate.exception.SQLStateConverter.handledNonSpecificException(SQLStateConverter.java:103) at org.hibernate.exception.SQLStateConverter.convert(SQLStateConverter.java:91) [ a bunch more ] Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: Field 'id' doesn't have a default value [ a bunch more ] The relevant code for the persisted class is: package hibtest.model; import javax.persistence.Entity; import javax.persistence.GeneratedValue; import javax.persistence.Id; import javax.persistence.Inheritance; import javax.persistence.InheritanceType; @Entity @Inheritance(strategy = InheritanceType.JOINED) public class Mensagem { protected Long id; protected Mensagem() { } @Id @GeneratedValue public Long getId() { return id; } public Mensagem setId(Long id) { this.id = id; return this; } } And the actual running code is just plain: SessionFactory factory = new AnnotationConfiguration() .configure() .buildSessionFactory(); { Session session = factory.openSession(); Transaction tx = session.beginTransaction(); Mensagem msg = new Mensagem("YARR!"); session.save(msg); tx.commit(); session.close(); } I tried some "strategies" within the GeneratedValue annotation but it just doesn't seem to work. Initializing id doesn't help either! (eg Long id = 20L). Could anyone shed some light? EDIT 2: confirmed: messing with@GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.XXX) doesn't solve it SOLVED: recreating the database solved the problem

• Problem upgrading eclipse rcp app from 3.3 to 3.5 on Mac OS

- by Alb
I previously had an eclipse rcp app based on eclipse 3.3 pugins deployed on both windows and mac OS X 10.4. i'm now trying to port the app to java 1.6 and eclipse 3.5 (Build id: 20100218-1602) plugins on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). I can launch the product from eclipse 3.5 on windows but not on Mac OS X. I have the 64bit cocoa eclipse IDE and java 6. In the launch configuration I set runtime JRE to JVM 1.6.0 and added required plugins. The plugins validate and everything else looks similar to windows configuration where it works, but when I launch i only get the following two lines in the console: 2010-03-16 13:29:32.742 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Enabled 2010-03-16 13:29:32.744 java[758:10b] [Java CocoaComponent compatibility mode]: Setting timeout for SWT to 0.100000 and then the program appears to just hang indefinitely. There is nothing written to the .log file so I'm not sure what error there is. • Filter a wpf collectionviewsource in VB?

- by Johnny Westlake
Hi, I want to filter a collectionviewsource using a filter I've written, but I'm not sure how I can apply the filter to it? Here is my collection view source: <Grid.Resources> <CollectionViewSource x:Key="myCollectionView" Source="{Binding Path=Query4, Source={x:Static Application.Current}}"> <CollectionViewSource.SortDescriptions> <scm:SortDescription PropertyName="ContactID" Direction="Descending"/> </CollectionViewSource.SortDescriptions> </CollectionViewSource> </Grid.Resources> I have implemented a filter as such: Private Sub WorkerFilter(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FilterEventArgs) Dim value As Object = CType(e.Item, System.Data.DataRow)("StaffSection") If (Not value Is Nothing) And (Not value Is DBNull.Value) Then If (value = "Builder") Or (value = "Office Staff") Then e.Accepted = True Else e.Accepted = False End If End If End Sub So how can I get the CollectionViewSource filtered by the filter on load? Could you please give all hte code I need (only a few lines I figure) as I'm quite new to coding. Thanks guys EDIT: For the record, <CollectionViewSource x:Key="myCollectionView" Filter="WorkerFilter" ... /> gives me the error: Failed object initialization (ISupportInitialize.EndInit). 'System.Windows.Data.BindingListCollectionView' view does not support filtering. Error at object 'myCollectionView'

• Building Cross Platform app - recommendation

- by Ben
Hi, I need to build a fairly simple app but it needs to work on both PC and Mac. It also needs to be redistributable on a disc or usb drive as a standalone desktop app. Initially I thought AIR would be perfect for this (it ticks all the API requirements), but the difficulty is making it distributable, as the app would require the AIR runtime to be installed to run. I came across Shu Player as an option as it seems to be able to package the AIR runtime with the app and do a (silent?) install. However this seems to break the T&C from Adobe (as outlined here) so I'm not sure about the legality. Another option could be Zinc but I haven't tested it so I'm not sure how well it'll fit the bill. What would you recommend or suggest I check out? Any suggestion much appreciated EDIT: There's a few more discussions on mono usage (though no real conclusion): Here and Here EDIT2: Titanium could also fit the bill maybe, will check it out. Any more comments from anyone? Ben

• How to use an out-of-process COM server without its tlb file

- by Dbger
It is about Window COM component. Server.exe: an 32bit out-of-process COM server CLSID_Application: The GUID of a COM object in Server.exe Client.exe: a 64bit client application which use Server.exe in a registry-free way. As we know, an exe can't be used as a registry-free COM component, to mimic such behavior, I start the Server.exe process myself by providing the exact path: CreateProcess("Server.exe") IClassFactory* pFactory = CoGetClassObject(CLSID_Application) pFactory-CreateInstance(ppAppObject); It works if I have the Server.tlb registred, but after unregister Server.tlb, it just failed to create the ppAppObject, even though I embed manifest into both Server.exe and Client.exe: <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <file name="Server.tlb"> <typelib tlbid="{DAC4A4C9-F84C-4F05-A7DC-E152869499F5}" version="1.0" helpdir=""></typelib> </file> <comInterfaceExternalProxyStub name="IApplication" iid="{D74208EA-71C2-471D-8681-9760B8ECE599}" tlbid="{DAC4A4C9-F84C-4F05-A7DC-E152869499F5}" proxyStubClsid32="{00020424-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"></comInterfaceExternalProxyStub> </assembly> Do you have any idea on this? Edit: It turns out that it really works if I specify tlbid for interfaces, and embed the manifest to both exe

• How to use Scala in IntelliJ IDEA (or: why is it so difficult to get a working IDE for Scala)?

- by Alex R
I recently gave up trying to use Scala in Eclipse (basic stuff like completion doesn't work). So now I'm trying IntelliJ. I'm not getting very far. I've been able to edit programs (within syntax highlighting and completion... yay!). But I'm unable to run even the simplest "Hello World". This was the original error: Scala signature Predef has wrong version Expected 5.0 found: 4.1 in .... scala-library.jar But that was yesterday with IDEA 9.0.1. See below... UPDATE Today I uninstalled IntelliJ 9.0.1, and installed 9.0.2 Early Availability, with the 4/14 stable version of the Scala plug-in. Then I setup a project from scratch through the wizards: new project from scratch JDK is 1.6.u20 accept the default (project) instead of global / module accept the download of Scala 2.8.0beta1 into project's lib folder Created a new class: object hello { def main(args: Array[String]) { println("hello: " + args); } } For my efforts, I now have a brand-new error :) Here it is: Scalac internal error: class java.lang.ClassNotFoundException [java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:202), java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method), java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:190), java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:307), sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301), java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:248), java.lang.Class.forName0(Native Method), java.lang.Class.forName(Class.java:169), org.jetbrains.plugins.scala.compiler.rt.ScalacRunner.main(ScalacRunner.java:72)] FINAL UPDATE I uninstalled 9.0.2 EA and reinstalled 9.0.1, but this time went with the 2.7.3 version of Scala rather than the default 2.7.6, because 2.7.3 is the one shown in the screen-shots at the IntelliJ website (I guess the screen-shots prove that they actually tested this version!). Now everything works!!!

• Add Image to Base64 Encoded ImageStream in Resources (resx)

- by NickAldwin
I'm working on an older project, updating it. Part of the program has a toolstrip with many buttons on it, each with an image. I found that the images are stored in a Base64 encoded imagestream in the resx for the form and accessed as such: System.ComponentModel.ComponentResourceManager resources = new System.ComponentModel.ComponentResourceManager(typeof(Form1)); ... this.imageList1 = new System.Windows.Forms.ImageList(this.components); ... this.toolStrip1.ImageList = this.imageList1; ... this.imageList1.ImageStream = ((System.Windows.Forms.ImageListStreamer)(resources.GetObject("imageList1.ImageStream"))); ... this.toolStripButton1.ImageIndex = 0; //There are 41 images, so this can be between 0 and 40 I need to add another button with a new image. How can I add an image to this stream? I cannot use the designer, as it crashes as soon as I load the form (I believe because it uses a custom component with unsafe code). I could always just add a new image resource separate from the stream, but that would make that one button different and thus it would create problems with consistency, causing upkeep problems later. So I'm wondering if there is any way for me to edit the imagestream. I can access the raw base64 string, but I have no idea where to go from here.

• Entity Framework & Binding syncronisation

- by Jefim
* EDIT * Sorry, I should make it clearer. Imagine I have an entity: public class MyObject { public string Name { get; set; } } And I have a ListBox: <ListBox x:Name="lbParts"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Name}"/> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> I bind it to a collection in code-behind: ObjectQuery<MyObject> componentQuery = context.MyObjectSet; Binding b = new Binding(); b.Source = componentQuery; lbParts.SetBinding(ListBox.ItemsSourceProperty, b); And the on a button click I add an entity to the MyObjectSet: var myObject = new MyObject { Name = "Test" }; context.AddToMyObjectSet(myObject); Here is the problem - this object needs to update in the UI to. But it is not added there :( Help!

• Complex ModelBinders and being in charge of creating part of the model

- by Kieron
Hi, I've a scenario where I need to bind to an interface - in order to create the correct type, I've got a custom model binder that knows how to create the correct concrete type (which can differ). However, the type created never has the fields correctly filled in. I know I'm missing something blindingly simple here, but can anyone tell me why or at least what I need to do for the model binder to carry on it's work and bind the properties? public class ProductModelBinder : DefaultModelBinder { override public object BindModel (ControllerContext controllerContext, ModelBindingContext bindingContext) { if (bindingContext.ModelType == typeof (IProduct)) { var content = GetProduct (bindingContext); return content; } var result = base.BindModel (controllerContext, bindingContext); return result; } IProduct GetProduct (ModelBindingContext bindingContext) { var idProvider = bindingContext.ValueProvider.GetValue ("Id"); var id = (Guid)idProvider.ConvertTo (typeof (Guid)); var repository = RepositoryFactory.GetRepository<IProductRepository> (); var product = repository.Get (id); return product; } } The Model in my case is a complex type that has an IProduct property, and it's those values I need filled in. Model: [ProductBinder] public class Edit : IProductModel { public Guid Id { get; set; } public byte[] Version { get; set; } public IProduct Product { get; set; } }

• Uploadify - Passing Information Back to The Original Form

- by CccTrash
I have an Send.aspx page that has an uploadify control on it. Upload.ashx handles the file upload. I am adding a file record to a sql database in the Upload.ashx file and I need to get the ID of that record back from Upload.aspx when it is done. Can't get it working with Sessions. =( Something to do with an Adobe bug? What would the best way to handle this be? Here is the uploadify control: Edit: See Answer below...
