• Are there any font rendering libraries for games development that support hinting?

  I've used angel code's bitmap font generator quite a bit and though it's very good, I wondered if there would be a way of using the hinting information to provide a better readable result by using hinting to provide differing thickness based on size/pixel coverage. I imagine any solution would have to use the distance field tech presented in the valve paper on smoothing fonts while maintaining or reducing asset size. (http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=494612) but I haven't found any demos of it being used with hinting information turned on or included in the field gradients in any way. Another way of looking at this is whether there are any font bitmap generators that will output mipmaps that still maintain their readability in the face of pixel size. I think the lower mip levels would try to guarantee fill and space where it is necessary to maintain readability/topology over maintaining style/form (the point of hinting). In response to "Is there a reason you can't just render the size you want", the problem lies in the fact that font rasterisers currently don't render in 3D, and hinting information would be important in different amounts due to the pixel density being different along different axes, even differing in importance along the length of a string due to the size reducing over distance. For example, I only want horizontal hinting in a texture that is viewed from the side, and only really want vertical hinting in a font that is viewed from below or above. This isn't meant to be a renderer that tries to render a perfect outline as accurately as possible, as hinting distorts the reality of the font, instead this is meant to be a rendering solution for quite static scenes, but scenes that have 3D transformed and warped text layout. In this case the legibility is important, more important than the accuracy of representation of the polygon shape.

• A Closable jQuery Plug-in

  In my client side development I deal a lot with content that pops over the main page. Be it data entry ‘windows’ or dialogs or simple pop up notes. In most cases this behavior goes with draggable windows, but sometimes it’s also useful to have closable behavior on static page content that the user can choose to hide or otherwise make invisible or fade out. The close image or close box is provided typically by way of a CssClass - .closebox by default – which supplies the image as part of the CSS styling. Plug-ins are great for this sort of thing because they can also be aggregated and so different components can pick and choose the behavior they want. Ideally though (and these posts make me realize this often a little late) I probably should set up a custom cssClass to handle the rendering – maybe a CSS class called .removebox that only changes the image from the default box image. This example also hooks up an event handler that is fired in response to the close. In the list I need to know when the remove button is clicked so I can fire of a service call to the server to actually remove the item from the database. The handler code can also return false; to indicate that the window should not be closed optionally. Returning true will close the window. You can find more information about the .closable class behavior and options here: .closable Documentation Plug-ins make Server Control JavaScript much easier I find this plug-in immensely useful especial as part of server control code, because it simplifies the code that has to be generated server side tremendously. Compared to the code I used to have in pre-jQuery versions of my JavaScript toolkit this is a walk in the park. In those days there was a bunch of JS generation which was ugly to say the least. I know a lot of folks frown on using server controls, especially the UI is client centric as the example is. However, I do feel that server controls can greatly simplify the process of getting the right behavior attached more easily and with the help of IntelliSense. Often the script markup is easier is especially if you are dealing with complex, multiple plug-in associations that often express more easily with property values on a control. Regardless of whether server controls are your thing or not this plug-in can be useful in many scenarios. Even in simple client-only scenarios using a plug-in with a few simple parameters is nicer and more consistent than creating the HTML markup over and over again. I hope some of you find this even a small bit as useful as I have. • Login Screen returns to login screen

  After many many reboots in a couple days while experimenting with BIOS settings effecting the speed Hardbrake runs at, today I find after a reboot that I have to type in password to log in - ordinarily I have this disabled. When I DO enter my password, it goes to a black screen for a bit, then returns. I can log in as guest, which does the same thing (minus the password) and if I use the wrong password, it complains instead of doing the same. Using the install disc, I see three partitions on my drive, a ~200 MB boot sector, and two 32 GB (one extended) which seem to share the rest of the SSD. Running FSCK seems to generate tons of errors. The odd bits: All my background stuff is running - I can access stuff served by Subsonic, and see network shares from my windows machines. I can log in in another terminal and do stuff... I just can't get into the GUI/OS proper. Sort of at a loss where to start. Would be happy to free drive of errors if I could (I've another machine, I could mount drive over USB and check it), but it seems everything else is working? edit: Screensaver also seems to kick on, even from fsck's run from the boot menu. i3-2100t, H67 chipset I believe, 12.10, everything's been working fine for the better part of a year. Seen several similar topics, but either they turn out to be something unrelated (fresh install or known graphics issues) or there are no answers. I'm happy to get any logs/info anyone want.

• Linux accessibility: Slow Keys causing duplicate key strokes

  I'm exploring the accessibility features within Gnome and having trouble with Slow Keys. My input is always doubled. Press a key briefly and I get nothing as you'd expect. Press just a bit longer and which ever key I'm pressing is input twice. Hello becomes HHeelllloo. I'm running Debian Lenny 5.0.6, kernel 2.6.26-2-686, GNOME Desktop 2.22.3 running within a VirtualBox session. I did some googling and didn't find others having similar troubles. Maybe it's a vbox thing? Any ideas how to fix this so I don't get the duplicates? It makes it impossible to log back in when the screen lock kicks on!

• Assigning multiple IPv6 addresses on a Server

  Let me uncover my intent. My host provides hundreds of IPV6 addresses free, but charge for an IPV4 address. I have several sites under one server and I was wondering if I can give each site/domain it's own ipv6 address. Is that even possible? If so how? I've read quite a bit about ipv6 but I do not understand it as clear as I'd like. My main goal is, for each domain/site to have it's own unique IP, so someone can't do a reverse ip look up and see what sites I have on that server. Thanks in advance for the patience.

• Ubuntu backlight problem with Nvidia graphics

  I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grug acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song)

• F5/BigIP rule to redirect affinity-bound users from INACTIVE pool node to other ACTIVE node

  We have several server nodes set up for the end users of our system and because we don't use any kind of session replication in the app servers, F5 maintains affinity for users with the ACTIVE node the client was first bound to. At times when we want to re-deploy the app, we change the F5 config and take a node out of the ACTIVE pool. Gradually the users filter off and we can deploy, but the process is a bit slow. We can't just dump all the users into a different node because - given the update heavy nature of the user activities - we could cause them to lose changes. That said, there is one URL/endpoint - call it http://site/product/list - which we know, when the client hits it, that we could shove them off the INACTIVE node they had affinity with and onto a different ACTIVE node. We have had a few tries writing an F5 rule along these lines, but haven't had much success so i thought I might ask here, assuming it's possible - I have no reason to think it's not based on what we have found so far.

• Ironport X-Junk header.

  My school uses Ironport for filtering/monitoring web traffic. I have a bit of curiosity as to why it tacks on a x-junk: header onto everything. After going through a few curl tests, I've found no real connection between what is shown on the page and the x-junk: header. here's my curl request: any ideas? • Recovering database files from a corrupted VHD

  We have a SQL server hosted on a virtual machine. Our hosting company updated/restarted the server and for some reason the virtual machines became unbootable. We've spoken to Microsoft and used a few higher level tools to attempt to recover the virtual machines but were unsuccessful. In browsing the file system the database folder doesn't even appear. I'm wondering if there are any lower level tools that might be able to find and copy the database files. As far as I know the physical hard drive is ok, so I'm hoping there may be some way to recover the files themselves even if the rest of the virtual machine file-system is a loss. Obviously we're in a bit of a bind, and any help/ suggestions are very much appreciated.

• How to recover bitlocker encrypted partition that is now 'unallocated'/'free space'?

  My hard drive had 5 partitions(including 1(some 4-5GB) bit locker encrypted one). When I used disk mgmt I could view 2 partitions(24.4GB and 8.94GB) in green colour labeled Empty space. So, I wanted to merge them and I used minitool partition wizard for the purpose. I don't know, what that software did, but all I was left with 2 partitions and lots of green free space. I recovered 2 partitions using EaseUS partition master, but the bitlocker encrypted partition cannot be searched by it(and also minitool partition recovery). Now, the disk mgmt shows 2 free space partitions of 28.36GB and 8.94GB respectively. P.S. - It contains very important data.

• OTN Virtual Developer Day for WebLogic Server and WebLogic Developer Broadcasts

  To further move the new year of 2011 underway for WebLogic Server, quite a series of hands on technical online events and broadcasts are about to get underway from the WebLogic team. The first is Virtual Developer Day: Oracle WebLogic Server which is an online event that combines hands on labs with WebLogic Server through a series of Virtual Box images. This event will cover things like the new Java EE 6 capabilities one can use on WebLogic Server, using Maven and Hudson with WebLogic Server, developing with Web services on WebLogic Server and even upgrading from Oracle Application Server. Very technical, very hands on. And its global - multiple geographies covered.  Nice! James Bayer has put out a full agenda for this on his blog as well as links on how to register. The second is a 5 week long weekly technical broadcast under the umbrella of Accelerate Your Development with Oracle WebLogic Suite walking through topics like working with JPA, designing distributed caching strategies with WebLogic Server, advanced JMS topics and UI topics like JQuery as well restful Web services with Jersey and JAX-RS.  Again in James' blog the full agenda is available to check out if it is interesting for you to attend including a brief video introduction outlining in a bit more detail exactly what will be covered. Hopefully between these two events and the release of WebLogic Server 10.3.4 earlier in January, we are kicking off 2011 in a good fashion.  Looking forward to sharing more as we go forward in 2011.

• Keyboard locking up in Visual Studio 2010

  One of the initiatives I’m involved with on the ASP.NET and Visual Studio teams is the Tactical Test Team (TTT), which is a group of testers who dedicate a portion of their time to roaming around and testing different parts of the product.  What this generally translates to is a day and a bit a week helping out with areas of the product that have been flagged as risky, or tackling problems that span both ASP.NET and Visual Studio.  There is also a separate component of this effort outside of TTT which is to help with customer scenarios and design. I enjoy being on TTT because it allows me the opportunity to look at the entire product and gain expertise in a wide range of areas.  This week, I’m looking at Visual Studio 2010 performance problems, and this gem with the keyboard in Visual Studio locking up ended up catching my attention. First of all, here’s a link to one of the many Connect bugs describing the problem: Microsoft Connect I like this problem because it really highlights the challenges of reproducing customer bugs.  There aren’t any clear steps provided here, and I don’t know a lot about your environment: not just the basics like our OS version, but also what third party plug-ins or antivirus software you might be running that might contribute to the problem.  In this case, my gut tells me that there is more than one bug here, just by the sheer volume of reports.  Here’s another thread where users talk about it: Microsoft Connect The volume and different configurations are staggering.  From a customer perspective, this is a very clear cut case of basic functionality not working in the product, but from our perspective, it’s hard to find something reproducible: even customers don’t quite agree on what causes the problem (installing ReSharper seems to cause a problem…or does it?). So this then, is the start of a QA investigation. If anybody has isolated repro steps (just comment on this post) that they can provide this will immensely help us nail down the issue(s), but I’ll be doing a multi-part series on my progress and methodologies as I look into the problem.

• Restore monitor detection to one only or restore start menu to bottom [Windows 7]

  I have a co-worker that is no longer able to see his start menu. He used to have it pinned to the left edge of his screen. I tried to troubleshoot it a bit and discovered if we do Windows + R then "cmd" [enter] the command prompt opens (but we don't see the start menu or run box), meaning the start menu is somewhere, just off screen. Restarting doesn't help. Is there some way to force Windows to think it only has a single monitor? It seems to "think" it has two but there's only one and we can get the Start menu back. Or, is there a way to restore the start menu to the bottom? Additional info We are able to right-click the desktop for display settings, etc. We can also get into Windows Explorer (via Ctrl + E) so if we need any of that to restore settings we can do it.

• how do you set the admin password on openldap 2.4

  I am getting started with openLdap 2.4 and am having a bit of trouble, all the examples I see seem to refer to previous versions which used the text config file slapd.conf but from what I see on discussions about v2.4, this has been deprecated. I thought prehaps I needed to add a user, and log in as them but when I try and run an ldapadd command, I get a prompt to enter a password: Enter LDAP Password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) Notes: I installed openldap server via yum (in fedora 15), and have installed phpldapadminbut also can try things on the command line if anyone has suggestions. After installing and starting I get the following response from a search: # ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts # extended LDIF # LDAPv3 # base <> with scope baseObject # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: namingContexts dn: namingContexts: dc=my-domain,dc=com # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 I am glad to remove and reinstall the server if that helps, can anyone provide a link to tips that works for version 2.4 for a new setup?

• Best way to fix security problems caused by windows updates?

  I have a laptop running Windows 7 32-bit. Last nights security updates caused my logitech mouse to stop working (specifically, it caused several USB ports to stop altogether). After reviewing the system event log I found that the IPBusEnum component was failing due to an activation security error. A little more research and I found that this was caused by the TrustedInstaller replacing the security permissions on those keys and generally mucking them up. To fix this I had to open regedit, take ownership of ALL the keys related to IPBusEnum and force it to use the inherited permissions from the tree. Is there a better way to fix this when MS screws up the updates? I would hate to have to walk around to a number of machines and manually fix the registry key security settings.

• AWS VPN Tunnel going down without traffic

  I managed to setup a site-to-site VPN connection from Amazon VPC to a company's network, and after a lot of configuration it was working fine, but now i realized that the VPN tunnel is DOWN every time there's no traffic going trough for a couple minutes. The only way that i have found to generate traffic is to reach the amazon instance from the company's network and then the tunnel goes up again. I had a cronjob doing ping every minute, but i think it should have a keepalive option somewhere, or at least a log file of the tunnels to find out what's going on. Any ideas to keep the tunnel up and/or bring it up from amazon? The firewall is a Checkpoint R75.20, it only allows one tunnel at a time for the same subnet, so i cant have both tunnels active. Thank you, any questions just ask. EDIT I forgot to add, the ping keepalive was working great (maybe generating a bit of traffic, but nothing to worry about), the connection dropped because i had to restart the instance, and it that little time it dropped me.

• How to monitor current output/receive queue length in Linux

  I want to check the capacity and performance of my network. Besides checking the txkB/s and rxkB/s via Sar, I'd also like to see the average queue length of the network interface(so that the average queueing time in the interface can be calculated). It seems that netstat can give a per socket queue length, is it possible to get a per interface statics(a bit like Network Interface\Output Queue Length in Windows)? A related and kind of reverse questions is How do I view the TCP Send and Receive Queue sizes on Windows? Thanks

I often want to know which database is very busy and which database is bit slow because of IO issue. Sometime, I think at the file level as well. I want to know which MDF or NDF is busiest and doing most of the work. Following query gets the same results very quickly. • Getting the alternative to the 200-Line Linux Kernel patch to work

  Apparently, there is a comparable alternative to the 200-line kernel patch that involves no kernel upgrade. It is presented here and discussed here. However, I am not sure if webupd8's solution (under the section "Use it in Ubuntu") on Ubuntu actually works or not. In particular, one commenter on ./ is saying he's getting an error message. Could anyone post the "correct" method that actually works? Suggested solution: Based on the comments I've read so far, the following seems to work. • How can I setup a subnetwork using DDWRT and a 2Wire?

  Ok, I'm having a bit of trouble getting this setup. I'm not really sure what direction I need to be looking in. I am on ATT UVerse and I have to use their horrible 2Wire Modem/Router. But with this router, I have very limited control over my network and my wifi range is too small for my house. But, I have a hardwire ran to my TV which I have hooked into a switch and split the line to my PS3. The problem I'm having, is I don't know how to get the Buffalo DD-WRT setup as a subnetwork so that the PS3 can find my Media Server.   I am trying to configure Kerberos for my SQL Server (the database engine domain account). I have executed the following command: SETSPN -A MSSQLSvc/MyDBServer:1433 MyDomain\SQLServerService Replacing MyDBServer with the FQDN of the server and replacing MyDomain\SQLServerService with the name of my account. I then ran the query: SELECT s.session_id , c.connect_time , s.login_time , s.login_name , c.protocol_type , c.auth_scheme , s.HOST_NAME , s.program_name FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions s JOIN sys.dm_exec_connections c ON s.session_id = c.session_id This returns NTLM. So it's not Kerberos. What am I mising? The delegation tab is available for the account, so the spn bit worked perfectly fine. Is it not required to set some settings in the delegation tab? I've seen this in the case of setting kerberos for Sharepoint 2010 (which I intend to setup). Thanks

I'm looking to set up central performance monitoring of some boxes. 2K3 TS ( Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) 2K8 R2 ( XenApp 6 = Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) File Server ( Standard File I/O ) My ultimate aim is to get as many counters/information, without impacting the clients session experience at all. Including counters specific to their sessions. I was thinking it logging directly to a SQL on another server, instead of a two part process of blg file then relog to sql. Would that work ok? Does anyone know the overhead of going straight to SQL from the client? I've searched around a bit, but havent found so much information it can be overwhelming. thanks

  I had my server set up with generic aliases in /etc/courier/aliases/users, which worked fine. But today I wanted to host some new domains, where addresses overlap. What I need is that [email protected] goes to account "dv", but [email protected] goes to account "d2". So I set up a new file containing fully qualified addresses ([email protected]: dv) instead of the previous dave: dv. But somehow, courier-smtpd doesn't accept mail to these addresses anymore. makealiases -dump prints all the aliases the way they should be.. so i'm a bit stuck.
