• South Korea Upcoming Cap and Trade Legislation

  In my previous blogs I talked about climate change legislation trends in California, Australia and the European Union. In the next series of blogs, I am going to highlight how carbon trading and sustainability reporting legislation is evolving in other Asia Pacific countries, including South Korea, China, Japan, India and Taiwan - starting with South Korea. South Korea passed legislation to begin a national cap-and-trade program in May 2012. Korea is the 8th biggest source of GHG emissions in the world and has a national target of cutting them 30% by 2020. South Korea's program will cover about 60% of emissions and will affect big emitters across the economy, including utilities, major manufacturers and even large universities. Emissions trading is scheduled to begin in Korea in 2015, the same year as in Australia and China. • Can't log in via SSH to any accounts set to use /bin/bash as a default shell

  I'm trying to install bash as the default shell on a ARM Linux running on an embedded device (Synology DS212+ NAS). But there's something really wrong, and I can't figure out what it is. Symptoms: 1) Root has /bin/bash as default shell, and can log in normally via SSH: $ grep root /etc/passwd root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash $ ssh root@NAS root@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:06:56 2012 from desktop # 2) joeuser has /bin/bash as default shell, and receives "Permission denied" when trying to log in via SSH: $ grep joeuser /etc/passwd joeuser:x:1029:100:Joe User:/home/joeuser:/bin/bash $ ssh joeuser@localhost joeuser@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:07:22 2012 from desktop Permission denied, please try again. Connection to localhost closed. 3) changing joeuser's shell back to /bin/sh: $ grep joeuser /etc/passwd joeuser:x:1029:100:Joe User:/home/joeuser:/bin/sh $ ssh joeuser@localhost Last login: Sun Dec 16 15:50:52 2012 from localhost $ To make things even more strange, I can log in as joeuser using /bin/bash using the serial console (!). Also a su - joeuser as root works fine, so the bash binary itself is working fine. In an act of despair, I changed joeuser's uid to 0 on /etc/passwd, but also didn't work, so it doesn't seem to be anything permission related. Seems that bash is doing some extra checking that sshd didn't like, and blocking the connections for non-root users. Maybe some sort of sanity checking - or terminal emulation - that is triggering the SIGCHLD, but only when called via ssh. I already went through every single item on sshd_config, and also put SSHD in debug mode, but didn't find anything strange. • ZenGallery: a minimalist image gallery for Orchard

  There are quite a few image gallery modules for Orchard but they were not invented here I wanted something a lot less sophisticated that would be as barebones and minimalist as possible out of the box, to make customization extremely easy. So I made this, in less than two days (during which I got distracted a lot). Nwazet.ZenGallery uses existing Orchard features as much as it can: Galleries are just a content part that can be added to any type The set of photos in a gallery is simply defined by a folder in Media Managing the images in a gallery is done using the standard media management from Orchard Ordering of photos is simply alphabetical order of the filenames (use 1_, 2_, etc. prefixes if you have to) The path to the gallery folder is mapped from the content item using a token-based pattern The pattern can be set per content type You can edit the generated gallery path for each item The default template is just a list of links over images, that get open in a new tab No lightbox script comes with the module, just customize the template to use your favorite script. • TrueCrypt Failing to Decrypt External Hard Drive after changing Enclosures

  I have a 4TB external hard drive that was previously encrypted using TrueCrypt. The power source on the hard drive enclosure failed, so I had to switch the hard drive itself into a new enclosure. I can no longer decrypt the hard drive using TrueCrypt, as it says my password is wrong. I am certain that I entering the correct password. Additionally, in TrueCrypt, when I try to mount the volume under "Select Device", it shows the following: Harddisk 5: 3.6TB Device\Harddisk5\Partition 1 H: 465GB Whereas before I changed the enclosure it would show: Harddisk 5: 3.6TB Device\Harddisk5\Partition 1 H: 3.6TB I am on a Windows 8 PC and using TrueCrypt 7.1a. How can I get it to decrypt properly?

• Who is code wanderer?

  In every area of life there are people with some bad habits or misbehaviors that affect the work process. Software development is also not free of this kind of people. Today I will introduce you code wanderer. Who is code wanderer? Code wandering is more like bad habit than serious diagnose. Code wanderers tend to review and “fix” source code in files written by others. When code wanderer has some free moments he starts to open the code files he or she has never seen before and starts making little fixes to these files. Why is code wanderer dangerous? These fixes seem correct and are usually first choice to do when considering nice code. But as changes are made by coder who has no idea about the code he or she “fixes” then “fixing” usually ends up with messing up working code written by others. Often these “fixes” are not found immediately because they doesn’t introduce errors detected by compilers. So these “fixes” find easily way to production environments because there is also very good chance that “fixed” code goes through all tests without any problems. How to stop code wanderer? The first thing is to talk with person and explain him or her why those changes are dangerous. It is also good to establish rules that state clearly why, when and how can somebody change the code written by other people. If this does not work it is possible to isolate this person so he or she can post his or her changes to code repository as patches and somebody reviews those changes before applying them.

  I've got an unresponsive Rackspace slice that has defied all attempts at accessing. I created an emergency image from this and deleted it, downloading the files that compromise the image to a local source. There are a number of files / assets I would still like to recover from this server if possible but not sure exactly what I can do with the image files, if anything. • Versioning millions of files with distributed SCM

  I'm looking into the feasibility of using off-the-shelf distributed SCMs such as Git or Mercurial to manage millions of XML files. Each file would be a commercial transaction, such as a purchase order, that would be updated perhaps 10 times during the lifecycle of the transaction until it is "done" and changes no more. And by "manage", I mean that the SCM would be used to not just version the files, but also to replicate them to other machines for redundancy and transfer of IP. Lets suppose, for the sake of example, that a goal is to provide good performance if it was handling the volume of orders that Amazon.com claimed to have at its peak in December 2010: about 150,000 orders per minute. We're expecting the system to be distributed over many servers in order to get reasonable performance. We're also planning to use solid-state drives exclusively. There is a reason why we don't want to use an RDBMS for primary storage, but it's a bit beyond the scope of this question. Does anyone have first-hand experience with the performance of distributed SCMs under such a load, and what strategies were used? Open-source preferred, since the final product is to be FOSS, too.

  If you experience sequence of errors below with BizTalk HL7 MLLP receive ports you may need to request a hotfix from Microsoft. Knowledge base article number is 2454887 but it’s still not available on the KB site. The hotfix is recently released and you may need to open support ticket to get to it. It requires three other hotfixes installed: ·         970492 (DASM 3.7.502.2) ·         973909 (additional ACK codes) ·         981442 (Microsoft.solutions.btahl7.mllp.dll 3.7.509.2) If the exceptions below repeatedly appear in the event log you most likely would be helped by the hotfix: Fatal error encountered in 2XDasm. Exception information is Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'CEventingReadStream'. There was a failure executing the receive pipeline: "BTAHL72XPipelines.BTAHL72XReceivePipeline, BTAHL72XPipelines, Version=1.3.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" Source: "BTAHL7 2.X Disassembler" Receive Port: "ReceivePortName" URI: "IPAddress:portNumber" Reason: Cannot access a disposed object.   We have a Cisco PIX 515 firewall and I would like to set up a simple logging that would give us a traffic breakdown for billing by: source destination protocol port size time PIX is plugged into Catalyst 2970 and I was told that the best thing since sliced bread for logging is to get Netflow and get Catalyst to log. My concern, however, (besides the Netflow cost) is that I really don't want to "listen" to the internal noise and all I'm interested in are the external traffic stats above for billing and analysis purposes. • How to Be a Software Engineer?

  My problem is kind of weird so please bear with me. I have been working in a start up concerned basically with mobile development since my graduation 2 years ago. I develop apps for iOS but it's not really relevant. The start up structure is simply founders developers, with no middle-tier technical supervision or project management whatsoever. A typical project cycle of ours is like this: meet with a client send very vague recruitment to an outsourced graphics designer dig in development right after we get the design, no questions asked then improvise improvise improvise! It's not that we are unaware that stuff like requirements analysis, UML, design patterns, source code control, testing, development methodologies... etc. exist, we just simply don't use them, and I mean like never. The result is usually a clunk of hardly-maintainable yet working code. Despite everything we are literally flourishing with many successful apps on all platforms and bigger clients each project. The thing is, we want the chaos and we're looking for advice. How would you fix our company technically? Given that you can't hire project managers or team leaders just because we are barely 5 developers, so it wouldn't be a justified cost for the founders, but one-time things like courses, books, private training... etc is an option. Lastly, if it's relevant, we are based in Egypt. Thank you a lot in advance.

• SharePoint 2010 Search - not search additional content sources

  I've got SP 2010 crawling a secondary intranet system that we'll run in parallel as part of a long running migration to SharePoint when it releases. Whilst it's crawling the pages without problem I can't see how to get the results to appear as part of the Quick Search results if the user does a search from the little search dialog box on the home page. Searches completed within a My Sites pages lists results from port the SharePoint installation and the external content source. Searches from the main search dialog only list results of SharePoint items. I tried adding the drop down option to select the site to search but this list only includes the name of the current site and doesn't offer an 'All Sites' scope option which I think would include the content. What am I doing wrong?

• Should we be able to deploy a single package to the SSIS Catalog?

  My buddy Sutha Thiru sent me an email recently asking about my opinion on a particular nuance of the project deployment model in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 and I’d like to share my response as I think it warrants a wider discussion. Sprint 2 Pkg 4 & 5 been developed. During this time users raised a bug on Pkg2. We want to make the change to Pkg2 and deploy that to UAT and eventually to LIVE without releasing Pkg 4 &5. How do we do it? I steadfastly believe that there should not be a way for an unscrupulous developer to slide in a new version of a package under the covers. Deploying .ispac files brings a degree of rigour to your operational processes. Yes, that means that we as SSIS developers are going to have to get better at using source control and branching properly but that is no bad thing in my opinion. Claiming to be proper "developers" is a bit of a cheap claim if we don't even do the fundamentals correctly. I would be interested in the thoughts of others who have used the project deployment model. Do you agree with my point of view? @Jamiet

• Best way to transfer files across unstable LAN?

  This is very similar to Question 326211, but in this case, the LAN is an unstable Wi-Fi connection. I need to transfer about 11 GiB of files between two computers, both running Linux (although one may be rebooted into Windows.) Their connection is both slow and unstable (due to Linux's awful Wi-Fi support,) but removable media (such as a flash drive or external hard drive) is not an option at this time. Right now, I'm slowly transferring the files, one by one, across SFTP, but I have to reconnect each computer approximately every 90 seconds, and the computers are not very close to each other, so this is not feasible. This is not a duplicate of Question 30186; that one specifically concerns Windows 7, and all the proposed solutions involve closed-source, Windows-only programs (which are all spyware IMHO, and are all off the table even if I trusted them - one of the computers is Linux-only.)

  I try to sync two directories using rsync. the source is on Linux, and the other is on windows. So, I mount the directory on windows using the command mount -t cifs ..... in Linux system. Then I execute rsync .... Everything is OK, but rsync prints out rsync: chown "/mnt/windows/A/." failed: Permission denied (13) rsync: chown "/mnt/windows/A/readme.txt" failed: Permission denied (13) I want to sync the directories without changing ownership.   So I'm developing a game for Android - using LibGDX - and noticed that the Android SDK (HDK, MDK, WhatTheHellEvarDK) has ProGuard built-in. Browsing the ProGuard page is like searching Google: you get that the idea is to sell some product (in this case, it's DexGuard). That leaves me wondering what features are left out of ProGuard that a game developer targeting Android should worry about. For instance, the ProGuard FAQs answer the question: "Does ProGuard encrypt string constants?" by saying: "No. String encryption in program code has to be perfectly reversible by definition, so it only improves the obfuscation level. It increases the footprint of the code. However, by popular demand, ProGuard's closed-source sibling for Android, DexGuard, does provide string encryption, along with more protection techniques against static and dynamic analysis." Alright. OK. But isn't "...improves the obfuscation level" EXACTLY what ProGuard is supposed to do? Are there better options that can be implemented at build-time in Eclipse using the Gradle options and Libgdx? In particular, the assets folder and res-specific folders will need some protection. The code itself doesn't cure cancer, but I'd prefer if nobody could copy/paste it with different game art and call it "IhAxEdUrGamE"....

• What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).

• Finding the right back-end developer

  I am creating a websites for mobile phone tests. Users can post their own tests and combine it with an existing rating of each product. I do only front-end development and I have no idea about back-end - php, sql, etc. I am not sure I should operate the website without this knowledge but my first thought is to get a professional whom I would give my website to, so that he can do the rest. Only thing is that I need to update it regularly and post my own tests. I don't know how that works and how I should approach this. My understanding is that, after I have finished the website (written in HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery), I would go and find a php programmer and tell me to put it online, make it secure, make sure that the open-source facility (users post their own tests) and that it runs smoothly with the host/server I've chosen. Could you tell me if my approach makes sense (is that the way how to do it)? What should I consider when searching the right back-end developer concerning the right price performance, trust, etc. ?

• Hylafax and "No response to MPS"

  We have an Hylafax 5.2.5 CentOS 5 installation hosted inside a Xen virtual machine. It works quite well, but now I'm in the process of upgrading/migrating it to a KVM virtual machine running Ubuntu 10.04 and Hylafax 5.5.1 (compiled from source using http://sourceforge.net/projects/hylafax/files/hylafax%20debian%20build%20files/ ) The problem I'm having is that - while receiving works fine - sending faxes is extremely unreliable, I get lots of "No response to MPS repeated 3 tries", or "Failure to transmit clean ECM image data." The line, modem and configuration files I'm using are the same as before, so I thought that it could be a KVM scheduling issue, but even setting cpu_shares to 10240 instead of 1024 doesn't change a thing...
