• Compaq Presario CQ40 unexpected turn off

  My Compaq Presario CQ40 (yeah, its pretty old) suddenly turns off after about 1/2 - 1 hour usage without any notice or warning. The power cable and adapter works fine (indicator bulbs show that power is given to the laptop), but it seems like machine suddenly plugged off from the power source. And when I try to switch it on, after the sudden turn off it simply won't turn on. I can only turn it on after letting it to rest for at least couple of hours! ** The battery has been dead for some time now, but it has been working fine on direct power supply until recently. Has anyone encountered this? and hopefully knows any cure?

• conditional formatting for subsequent rows or columns

  I have data in a range of cells (say six columns and one hundred rows). The first four column contains data and the sixth column has a limiting value. For data in every row the limiting value is different. I have one hundred such rows. I am successfully using Conditional formatting (e.g. cells containing data less than limiting value in first five columns are made red) for 1st row. But how to copy this conditional formatting so that it is applicable for entire hundred rows with respective limiting values. I tried with format painter. But it retains the same source cell (here limiting value) for the purpose of conditional formatting in second and subsequent rows. So, now I am required to use conditional formatting for each row separately s

• Visio 2010 Reverse Engineer Oracle

  I have used Visio 2007 in the past to reverse engineer Oracle databases to get a flow scheme. I believe all Office 2007 products were x86 as well which is where I suspect my issue currently lies. I have since upgraded to Visio 2010 x64 and when I go to reverse engineer something from Oracle it shows up under Installed Visio Drivers but I can't seem to create a data source using it. My assumption here is it is because Oracle doesn't play nicely with x64 and with Visio being compiled as x64 I don't even get the option to use it. Has anyone done this with Visio 2010 x64 and Oracle yet? Or are there other tools you would recommend to reverse engineer and get a model such as the one generated by Visio?

• Nokia Lumia Windows Phones Coming To India On Nov 14

  Nokia released it’s first set of smartphones, Lumia 800 & Lumia 710,  powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS few weeks ago in Europe. India being it’s one of the favourite markets, Nokia is all set to launch the Lumia on November 14 in New Delhi. Unlike Apple who releases iPhones in India very late, Nokia is planning to bring its flagship smart mobiles very early to Indian market.  This is a good move by Nokia to keep it’s existing market share that is continuously challenged by Android OS smart phones from various manufactures. Nokia Lumia 710 runs on version 7.5 of Windows Phone OS(nick named as Mango) with 512 MB RAM, 8 GB internal storage capacity, 3.7″ WVGA TFT display, WIFI, GPS,  and 5 MP camera. Price details of the phone is not available but to be competitive in the market it should be priced some where between 25,000 to 30,000. • Bash - Program is writing directly to terminal

  Valve's dedicated server for the Source Engine (srcds_run) on Linux writes directly to the terminal, not stdout. I want to run it as an /etc/init.d daemon on Debian 6, and I'd like to redirect/capture the output to a file. How can I do that? And better yet, why would they output directly to the terminal, is there any benefit in doing that? I suppose I could start another bash instance just for srcds_run, but that seems like a dirty solution, and I still don't know how to redirect the output.

• how to compile VTK on Mac Air

  I am trying to compile VTK on a Mac after successfully doing so on Linux. I am using CMake 2.8.9 and for a long time I had a problem where it couldn't find jni.h. If anyone else has the problem, the answer is to have JAVA_INCLUDE_PATH2 point to "-framework JavaVM". After that it successfully finds JNI and does a "Configure" followed by "Generate". According to the instructions I have the next step should be easy: in a terminal run "make -j 2". I get a message "-bash: make: command not found". Strange.... I am in the vtkBuild directory, which seems the most reasonable place. I even tried the parent directory where I have the VTK source but that didn't work either. I ran a make under Linux and had no troubles, so what do I need to do with the Mac? Thanks, Ilan

  Hi, I'm working with Drupal for the first time and trying to figure out how to change the Menu item names through the Administer Site Building configuration menus. I have logged into the Drupal admin site and navigated to Administer/ Site Building/ Menus, select the menu item and click Edit, change the Title from , 'About' to 'About Us' however when loading the site page it still says 'About' Please pardon my lack of understanding on drupal, i am somewhat familiar with joomla another CMS however I just need some pointers in the right direction as to how to edit the links and rename them within drupal. the links are not images as far as i can tell while viewing the source and properties on the links. • .Net search engine architecture and technology choice

  I am in the process of designing a search engine for an asp.net site. The site currently uses Microsoft Indexing Server to index and search content which range from simple text files to MS documents to PDFs. MIS is also used to crawl File servers. MIS in tandem with Index Server Companion crawls for content from external sites. I intend to replace MIS with the indexer/crawler I am trying to build. Since my platform is completely on the Microsoft stack, I cant afford to have a Java application server. Thus, Solr, and effectively, SolrNet is ruled out. With this being the context, I have couple of questions. 1.Technology choice I had done my initial investigation and looked at Lucene.Net. There seemed to be 2 issues in using Lucene.Net. First being, it cant crawl external content. There doesn't seem to be a direct port of Nutch in .Net. Second, since it is just an indexer, it cant parse various document types. The parsing is left to the developer. So, what would be best technology choice on the .Net platform to achieve indexing & crawling? Are there any .Net open source libraries available for document parsing? 2.Architectural pattern Is there any general architectural pattern or best practice that needs to be followed in designing such a search engine? • Connecting to a secure, graphical, x session using a stateless thin client

  I'm looking for an open source, non-proprietery solution to this problem, any help would be appreciated. I'd like to setup a server running Ubuntu Server. I'd then like to connect to this server from a stateless thin client and use an x-session. This would occur mostly over local area networks, but also possibly over the internet. What would be the ideal set of software to accomplish this from a security, and usability standpoint? Are there any ready-made stateless thin clients that don't require proprietery software?

  There’s a good piece written by Ann Grackin of ChainLink Research on the Manufacturing Leadership 100 Awards program held recently in Palm Beach Fl, Apr 30-May 3, 2012.  This article (link below) highlights the summary of the Summit with specific focus on manufacturing innovation.  There were several informative keynotes and sessions from industrial leaders who are leveraging the latest tools and technologies to make better decisions. Ann writes that she was a panelist with Cindy Reese, SVP, Worldwide Operations, Oracle; and Steven Tungate, VP/GM, Supply Chain & Innovation, Toshiba America Business Solutions about Factories and Supply Networks of the Future. Ann writes “So what are these manufacturers doing? Significant rationalization of the supply base (Toshiba, especially, has this issue since they have a long history of many acquisitions), streamlining production to increase productivity, and looking for lower-cost countries for manufacturing….  No doubt firms have global customer bases, so they need to be present in these markets. However, a low-cost-country manufacturing source does introduce more risk in the supply chain. And that was discussed. • Windows screen shots via command-line SSH session

  I've browsed the handful of "screen capture" queries here, but I was unable to find anything which addressed my specific need. I'm looking for a command-line tool that I can run via remote SSH connection (by way of the cygwin sshd daemon). There are several to choose from, but the few I've tried (ImageMagick, nircmd, and MiniCap) all result in a blank screen. I assume that this is due to the remotely logged in user not having a proper graphical console session running. The goal here is automate screen capture and retrieval of the main system console (what one would see if they were looking at the physical monitor) through the use of ssh script from a Unix host: ssh user@windowshost "screencap --output /tmp/console.jpg" scp user@windowshost:/tmp/console.jpg /some/destdir Note that these must be done on demand, so polling a remote directory that has snapshots dumped periodically will not work. Bonus points for programs that are open source and have a portable install (so I don't need to RDP/VNC into the machine to run a graphical installer).

• SQL SERVER – Load Generator – Free Tool From CodePlex

  One of the most common questions I receive is if there any tool available to generate load on SQL Server. Absolutely there is a fabulous free tool available to generate load on SQL Server on Codeplex. This tool was released in 2008 but it is still extremely relevant to generate the load on SQL Server as well works fabulously. CodePlex is a project initiated by Microsoft for hosting open source softwares. The best part of this SQL Server Load Generator is that users can run multiple simultaneous queries again SQL Server using different login account and different application name. The interface of the tool is extremely easy to use and very intuitive as well. One of the things which I felt needed improvement was a default configuration. As every single time when I was adding a query the default settings were showing up and I had to manually change that. However, when I went to Menu >> Tools >>Options I was really happy as it has options to change every single default which is available. Here one can give default username, password, database name as well various settings related to configuration. Additionally application logging is also possible through the options. A couple of other important points I noticed was the button to reset counters as well status bar containing useful information of Total Threads, Completed Queries and Failed Queries. • Read data from separate CSV file in OpenOffice Calc

  Hi, I have a very large CSV file (many thousands of rows) that I want to work with. Due to the size of the file, I don't want to import it into openoffice. Rather, I want to create a spreadsheet that contains formulas & graphs that read from this (or any other) CSV file I point it it. Ideally the spreadsheet will ask me what CSV file I want to use, allowing me to change the data source dynamically. Any ideas?

• Meaningful concise method naming guidelines

  Recently I started releasing an open source project, while I was the only user of the library I did not care about the names, but know I want to assign clever names to each methods to make it easier to learn, but I also need to use concise names so they are easy to write as well. I was thinking about some guidelines about the naming, I am aware of lots of guidelines that only care about letters casing or some simple notes. Here, I am looking after guidelines for meaningful concise naming. For example, this could be part of the guidelines I am looking after: Use Add when an existing item is going to be added to a target, Use Create when a new item is being created and added to a target. Use Remove when an existing item is going to be removed from a target, Use delete when an item is going to be removed permanently. Pair AddXXX methods with RemoveXXX and Pair CreateXXX methods with DeleteXXX methods, but do not mix them. The above guidance may be intuitive for native English speakers, but for me that English is my second language I need to be told about things like this.

  We have one big problem at the moment: We need to mirror a filesystem for one of our customers. Thats usual not really a problem, but here it is: On this filesystem there is one folder with millions of hardlinks (yes! MILLIONS!). rsync requires more then 4 days to just build the filelist. We use the following rsync options: rsync -Havz --progress serverA:/data/cms /data/ Has anyone a idea how to speed up this rsync, or use alternatives? We could not use dd as the target disk is smaller then the source.

  I am interested in purchasing a netbook to do field research in another country. My hardware specifications for the nebtook: -Be rugged enough to survive a bit of wear and tear -Fairly fast processing (the ability to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB) -A battery life of longer than 6 hours -At least a 10 inch screen -A decent camera for Skyping My software needs: -Be able run a Spreadsheet program to do basic data input (like Excel or Open Office) -Use the Open Source Statistical Program R to do basic data analysis (Regression, data analysis etc.) -Word Processing (Word or Open Office) Do you have any suggestions on which models or brands my fit my needs? Some of the models I was considering: Samsung NB-30 Toshiba NB 305 Asus Eee PC 1005HA Lenovo S10-2 Also any recommendations on the best software to load on the aforementioned Netbooks. • What is the correct UI interface to learn for creating Windows phone 8 apps? [closed]

  I am a veteran Delphi 6 programmer transitioning to C# development. My first project is a open source library that will have a minimal user interface since it is meant to be used as a Component primarily on desktop PCs running Visual Studio. My next project is going to be a Windows 8 phone app and I intend for that platform to be my primary focus for future C# development, not the desktop. My concern is that I waste as little time as possible learning a presentation framework that will benefit or distract me from writing Windows 8 phone apps. The plethora of framework names I have already encountered include, WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Framework), Silverlight, Silverlight Mobile, Metro and there may be others. Given my goal outlined in the first paragraph above, I have a few questions: 1) Which of the frameworks should I use for the small amount of UI work I will do with the desktop Component project that will help me the most, or hurt me the least, when I move to Windows 8 phone app development? 2) Which is the correct framework to study for developing Windows 8 phone apps? 3) Any awesome tutorials, resources or books you have run into targeted towards veteran programmers from other platforms? I read about the Portable Library Tools on this Stack Overflow thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5522355/windows-phone-7-wpf-sharing-a-codebase But the reply by Simon Guindon seemed to indicate to me that it's not the best solution for writing a competitive Windows 8 phone app.

Enhanced Security Features The JDK 7u10 release includes the following security enhancements: The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. The ability to select the desired level of security for unsigned applets, Java Web Start applications, and embedded JavaFX applications that run in a browser. Four levels of security are supported. This feature can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated. • Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround? Here is the command that I used to initialize the build environment: $ sudo apt-get install git gnupg flex bison gperf build-essential \ zip curl libc6-dev libncurses5-dev:i386 x11proto-core-dev \ libx11-dev:i386 libreadline6-dev:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 \ libgl1-mesa-dev g++-multilib mingw32 tofrodos \ python-markdown libxml2-utils xsltproc zlib1g-dev:i386 $ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libGL.so My laptop model is asus u36sd. • ubuntu 12.10 installation failure

  Here i am asking this question again because someone deemed it a duplicate to another topic which i over looked and NOTHING AT ALL in that topic pertained to my problem. If your going to close a topic believing it is a duplicate at least do somke reasearch into WHY you think its a duplicate and provide a like to a better source. How do i get past this installation username and password issue? I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 directly from Ubuntu.com and created a bootable USB with linuxlive. after loading the boot drive and ubuntu begins, it goes directly from the purple ubuntu startup screen directly to a black DOS like prompt asking for a ubuntu login. this is COMPLETLY before any installation -begins. i need some help with this. FYI : this is what it is saying after it goes to the login area in the DOS (Full black screen) like screen. Ubuntu 12.10 ubuntu tty1 ubuntu login: now i will provide a few images of the problem i am having. and because i DONT HAVE ANY OS on the computer BECAUSE ubuntu WONT go PAST this... i have to snap these pictuires with a cell phone and upload on another PC. these links are in chronological order from time of pressing power button to time i am presented with log in screen : image 1 image 2 can only post 2 links in messages... will post additional links in comments So, again... how do i get past this ? this is entireley before ubuntu is installed on my system. my PC specs... Homebuilt computer: Motherboard is a Asus Sabertooth x58 with a intel core i7 processor. Mushkin memory @ 12gbs. 4ea. Seagate 150gb hard drives. nvidia GTX 260 graphics card. i initially attempted to install to raid 5. failed. i broke down the raid and attempted to install to a single drive with all other drives disconnected from the PC. again, thanks in advanced for any assistance.

  I'd like to sell instructional videos over the web. Primarily, I'd like uses to subscribe to the site and be allowed access to videos over the internet. Secondarily, I might sell DVDs for those who have poor internet connections or would like a physical copy, or possibly I'd sell eBooks and the like in the future. Regarding the subscriptions: I'd like a system that automatically sends out e-mails when it is time to renew I'd like to be able to offer free trials Users without a free trial or subscription should not be able to access the content Incidentally, I plan to host videos on my current web host and move them to a CDN when volume (and capital) make this a good idea. While I have no intention to go crazy with the DRM, it seems expedient not to directly link to the files -- how can I link to them indirectly? It would be nice to support multiple payment processors -- specifically, I'd like to avoid a PayPal only approach. Are there any web applications (or plugins) you'd recommend for something like this? While I've set up and administered several web technologies, I've never done anything with e-commerce. I see there are possibilities like osCommerce, one friend recommends using WordPress with plugins, and it really appears that for any given CMS, you can graft on components like this, although I imagine that not all are created equal. As I'm not tied to a particular web application (and, while open source software that can run on a LAMP [p=perl, python, php] stack is preferable), I'd like to make a good choice at the beginning.

• European wireless data

  I am on my way to Europe for 20 days with the wife and teenage kids. Among us, we have 3 iPhones, 1 Blackberry, 2 iPad 3G and 2 Macbook Pro laptops. Each has Skype. I am very concerned about AT&T data charges, and I am looking for a sensible alternative. For example, the AT&T data plans for the phones and iPads are $200 EACH for 200 MB per device. That is $1,200 and does not even cover the laptops. Ouch!!! I am thinking about a prepaid data plan from a European cell system of some sort combined with a GSM data modem and a Cradlepoint router, such as the CTR500. So, questions: 1) Anyone know of a GSM data source in Europe where I can buy a GSM Modem compatible with the CTR500 at a reasonable prepaid rate? 2) Experience with the CTR500?

• Record demo and save as AVI for upload to YouTube?

  Hello I need to record the demo of a program in Windows, and save this into an AVI file so that I can upload it to YouTube. I tried Wink for this, but unless I overlooked it, it saves files as Flash (FLV), which YouTube refused. Is there an open-source alternative? I don't need something hardcore, just a tool that will let me save a demo, and insert a couple of slides where the demo stops to let the user read stuff and click on a button to resume watching. Thank you.
