• How to control admission policy in vmware HA?

  Simple question, I have 3 hosts running 4.1 Essentials Plus with vmware HA. I tried to create several virtual machines that filled 90% of each server's memory capacity. I know that vmware has really sophisticated memory management within virtual machines, but I do not understand how the vCenter can allow me even to power on the virtual machines that exceed the critical memory level, when the host failover can be still handled. Is it due to the fact that virtual machines does not use the memory, so that it is still considered as free, so virtual machines can be powered on ? But what would happen if all VMs would be really using the RAM before the host failure - they could not be migrated to other hosts after the failure. The default behaviour in XenServer is that, it automatically calculates the maximum memory level that can be used within the cluster so that the host failure is still protected. Vmware does the same thing ? The admission policy is enabled. Vmware HA enabled.

• Unlocking AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition cores - what are the risks?

  I've got the above mentioned CPU and a GigaByte GA-MA790XT-UD4P motherboard, which should be capable of unlocking the extra two cores - if I'm lucky and they're not faulty. The Internet is full of instructions on how to do that. What I don't have is spare money to buy new hardware if I brick something. What are the risks when attempting to do this? Is it completely safe, or can I be left with an expensive pile of junk? What should I keep in mind when doing so? Bigger cooler maybe (I'm running with the default box cooler)? Should I lower the frequencies too? I've never done any OC before.

• Can't move or access WSS Central Administration site

  We have several WSS Servers: WSS1 WSS2 WSS3 WSS4 SharePoint thinks that Central Administration is on WSS3 and that it can be access via SSL on port 22641. The problem is that central administration is not there. It was removed using the config wizard. We removed central admin from all servers to clean everything out, and we tried installing Central Admin on WSS1. The alternate access mappings still point to central admin on WSS3. We tried deleting the alternate access mappings, but SharePoint won't let you delete central admin's mapping. Later, we removed central admin from all of our servers and tried creating the Central Admin website on WSS3, where SharePoint already thinks it is. But for some reason SharePoint is creating the alternate access mappings using SSL, and we don't have a certificate for the server. Why is SharePoint creating alternate access mappings routing an https internal URL by default? How can we move central administration to a new server? We are using WSS 3.0.

Rsyslog has become the default on most linux distro. Requirements have changed (security, software configuration management, ...). I'd like to ask the following questions : How do you centralize, display and archive system logs? How would you like to do it now if you had to? Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

Some of our password recovery utilities already implement Windows 8 plain-text password decryption. The upcoming release of Windows Password Recovery is expected to have a full-fledged Vault analyzer and offline decoder. I'm trying to understand what a plain text password is and if it is the default kind of password when I add a password to my account. My head is a bit muddled on this one so any clarification can help. It seems there are passwords that can be decrypted and those that can't. What can be decrypted? Is the password I enter in Windows exposed?

• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

Java 8 Update 05. I guess I have a few questions: 1) Why does my Java Control Panel claim I have Java 8, but my work in the terminal (when checking my Java version) says otherwise? 2) I just downloaded the .dmg file for Java SE 7 from Oracle's site and installed, though it's nowhere to be seen... • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works.   I'm want install Xen Server 6.2 though ipxe, I tried different configurations, no luck making to work until now.   I'm struggling with setting up email reporting in Freenas. My build is FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-x64 (10351). I have my IPv4 Default gateway set to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and Nameserver 1 as 8.8.8.8 (google's public). Under my email tab I have from email ***@gmail.com outgoing mail server smtp.google.com port to connect to 465 tls/ssl SSL use smtp auth checked username ***@gmail.com password **** I then went into accounts and changed the root email to ***@gmail.com. When I try and send a test email, I get Your test email could not be sent: timed out So what am I doing wrong?

  I have banshee 2.2.1 with Ubuntu 11.10 I have been trying to update banshee to 2.4 (released yesterday) but it just isnt working, I have been using sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa in terminal, from the Banshee.fm website. but after running through terminal it says this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa You are about to add the following PPA to your system: PPA for Banshee Team This PPA contains the latest stable debs of Banshee for Ubuntu. To install Banshee, you must first enable the PPA on your system: 1. Open Software Sources (System->Administration->Software Sources) 2. Navigate to the "Third Party Sources" tab. 3. Click "Add" 4. Enter the APT line below that corresponds to your Ubuntu version that starts with "deb". 5. Click "Add Source" 6. Click "Close" 7. It will prompt you to reload your software cache. Click "Reload". 8. Now install the package "banshee" from Synaptic, or using the command below: sudo apt-get install banshee For those who wish to compile from trunk, add the deb-src line and then run "sudo apt-get build-dep" to install all required dependencies before starting to compile. • How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

  Pardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value. • Monogame - Shader parameters missing

  I am currently working on a simple game that I am building in Windows 8 using MonoGame (develop3d). I am using some shader code from a tutorial (made by Charles Humphrey) and having an issue populating a 'texture' parameter. I'm not well versed writing shaders, so this might be caused by a more obvious problem. I have debugged through MonoGame's Content processor to see how this shader is being parsed, all the non 'texture' parameters are there and look to be loading correctly. • Qmail does not forward mail to a specific domain

  Hi I have a dedicated hosting account with GoDaddy.com. I've pointed my domain's email to work with Google apps. The server has qmail running and it forwards email to all domains just fine except for MY domain (mydomain.com) - it says 550 User xxx not found in mydomain.com I believe it thinks I've hosted email on the server itself (not gmail) and it's trying to validate if [email protected] exists on my server (which is not the case since it's all handled by google apps). How do I make it forward mail to all domains? Thank you :) EDIT: I would only need it forwarding emails if the connection originates from 127.0.0.1 - which I believe is the default way it's configured. So to clarify: I just need a purely forwarded configuration so my PHP scripts have the ability to send email.

• Should websites live in /var/ or /usr/ according to recommended usage?

  According to a guide on the Linux directory structure, /usr/ is for application files, and /var/ is for files that change (I assume this means "files that belong to the applications"). Is this correct? If this is the case then I'm a little torn between using either. A website is an application (if it's dynamic, so to speak), but in other cases it is just a collection of files used by Apache. The default www dir lives in /var/www/, so should we follow suit by using /var/websites/ (or something similar), or choose /usr/websites/ since they could be applications? This is a very trivial question, but it's bugging me nonetheless. For our case, I'm leaning toward /usr/web or something like that, since our websites are all applications. Update: This is for our company websites; it's not a shared hosting server, so we don't need to worry about separating them in /home/ or anything like that.

• VMware networking - PortChannel or not?

  My ESX hosts each have 8 NICS. I have set up 2 NICs for our iSCSI SAN - each is connected to a different SAN switch. 2 NICs are set up for vMotion and Service Console - these are each connected to a different core switch (ports are trunked with VLANs dedicated to vMotion and Management) I now have four ports left over. Currently we have these set up each going into our default VLAN. Two NICs are connected to one core-switch and two are connected to the other. We decided to aggregate the connections to each switch - so they are teamed at the vswitch end, and port channelled at the physical switch end. I am now reading that port channelling these connections is not particularly useful, perhaps even over complicating things. Is there a particular problem with using port channels for VMware? What method provides the best balance between redundancy and performance?

  I have two ASUS laptops running Windows 7 connected wirelessly via 802.11n at 150 Mbit, as reported by Task Manager. The router is Netgear WNDR3700. • archiva/jetty with nginx ssl proxy: getting http responses

  I've been banging my head against this for awhile now. I have an archiva repository server I'm trying to proxy through nginx with ssl offloading. archiva has a jetty server built in that is listening on port 8008 of the localhost. I'm able to get to the archiva server through the proxy, but it wants to return http responses and not https responses. I thought that setting the following headers was supposed to tell the server to respond with https: proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https; proxy_redirect off; I also tried "proxy_redirect default;". It seems that the jetty/archiva server is not recognizing these or there needs to be something more. I've been scouring forums and as far as I can tell, everything is set as it should be. I'm not sure where else to check at this point. Has anyone had any success with this?

  In the man pages for sshd_config, for the AllowTCPForwarding option, it states: AllowTcpForwarding Specifies whether TCP forwarding is permitted. The default is “yes”. Note that disabling TCP forwarding does not improve security unless users are also denied shell access, as they can always install their own forwarders. How do I install my own forwarder? I have a remote server in which I disabled TCPForwarding a long while ago. I would like to "enable" it for myself only, by using my own forwarder, while keeping the forwarding closed to the other users. I've looked around, but cannot seem to find the right pkgs to accomplish this. Can anyone please elaborate? Thanks! Eric

• IIS7 folder permissions

  I build a basic WCF service that I now want to host in IIS7 under Windows Server 2008 R2. I added the service as an application under the default web site but whenever i try to run the application I get the following error: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config Error - Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions The only way I can get this service working is if i choose to "connect as" the server Administrator when adding the service. the "application user (pass-through authentication)" option does not seem to work. Could anyone help me out, I've just started using IIS7 and have no idea what to do... Thanks
