  I have a PHP page that does a couple of different things depending on what action is set to in the GET data. Depending, it is supposed to return some JSON, but instead of doing anything it is supposed to it returns the bottom half of the code document itself, starting in the middle of the line.   I'm looking for a solution that will allow my rails app to render a user-friendly maintenance page when there is no Mysql server available to connect to. Normally a Mysql::Error is thrown from the mysql connection adapter in active_record. Something like: /!\ FAILSAFE /!\ Wed May 26 11:40:14 -0700 2010 Status: 500 Internal Server Error Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' Is there a low-overhead way to catch this error and render a maintenance page instead? I'm assuming that since connections are actually made in the active_record mysql adapter the app never makes it to the controller stack before it throws the error, so you can't catch it in a controller. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

• Debugging JavaScript in Internet Explorer

  I am working on a relatively complex JavaScript-driven website. It runs great in all browsers except Internet Explorer. I am getting this very curious error: "A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: 93,865,600. Error: Expected ';'" The issue is, I don't have 93 million lines of code, and clicking "Yes" doesn't attach to Visual Studio like it normally does. I can click on 'No' and the website continues to run fine, but if a user doesn't have JavaScript debugging disabled, I don't want them to see this meaningless error. Suggestions/Tools/Plugins to get to the bottom of this? And yeah, I learned my lesson, switch over and check my project in Internet Explorer more often... Thanks,

• How can I handle maxRequestLength exceptions elegantly?

  In my ASP.NET MVC (v2 if it matters) app, I have a page that allows the user to upload a file. I've configured the maxRequestLength for my app to allow files up to 25MB. As a test, I send it a 500MB file which throws the exception: Maximum request length exceeded. (I only know this because ELMAH catches the error and logs it.) In my web.config, I've set customErrors mode="On" with a defaultRedirect, but the user isn't redirected at all, they don't even get a yellow-screen-of-death. In Chrome, for example, you'll see the error: Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error. Is it possible to provide a more elegant user experience for this situation?

  Hi, I have a header file that has some forward declarations but when I include the header file in the implementation file it gets included after the includes for the previous forward declarations and this results in an error like this. error: using typedef-name ‘std::ifstream’ after ‘class’ /usr/include/c++/4.2.1/iosfwd:145: error: ‘std::ifstream’ has a previous declaration. • Subclass not seeing superclass' instance variable

  I have a situation where my subclass is not seeing the superclass' instance variable x. The ivar is obviously @protected by default, so why do I get a compiler error "x undeclared"? If I make this ivar a property then I can access it by self.x. What's worse is sometimes the error disappears, so something in my code is obviously causing this error but I cannot figure it out.

  On Rails 2.3.8 (but I think Rails 3 might have this issue as well, not sure): I get an error when trying to execute a LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE query after reconnecting to a database. I have a process that parses a file that can potentially take a bit of time. During the parsing, Mysql closes the connection due to timeout. This is fine, I do a ActiveRecord::Base.verify_active_connections! and I get the connection back (I do this in several places through my app). However, running a LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE statement, I get this error: Mysql::Error: The used command is not allowed with this MySQL version It's not a permission issue, I know that for sure. It's just this one that giving me the error. I even tested this with a fresh rails app. You'll notice that I am able to do the exact same query before the disconnect. Thanks for the help!
