• Why are my Opteron cores running at only 75% capacity each? (25% CPU idle)

  We've just taken delivery of a powerful 32-core AMD Opteron server with 128Gb. We have 2 x 6272 CPU's with 16 cores each. We are running a big long-running java task on 30 threads. We have the NUMA optimisations for Linux and java turned on. Our Java threads are mainly using objects that are private to that thread, sometimes reading memory that other threads will be reading, and very very occasionally writing or locking shared objects. We can't explain why the CPU cores are 25% idle. I had trouble finding a clear explanation of what 'top' means by "idle" versus "wait", but I get the impression that "idle" means "no more threads that need to be run" but this doesn't make sense in our case. We're using a "Executors.newFixedThreadPool(30)". There are a large number of tasks pending and each task lasts for 10 seconds or so. I suspect that the explanation requires a good understanding of NUMA. Is the "idle" state what you see when a CPU is waiting for a non-local access? If not, then what is the explanation?

• CSS Container not growing with grid?

  Hi, I have a container background defined in CSS like this; .container { background:#fff; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; position: relative; width:970px; border:1px solid #000; padding:5px 10px; } The problem is I have a jqGrid put in the bottom of the container (near the bottom edge) and when its initially drawn it does fit inside the container panel and looks correct. Something like this (please pardon my non-l33t graphic skillz): But then when I populate the grid with rows it outgrows the container and it looks really tacky, something like this (I circled the original container background edges): I am sure its something I am doing wrong with the CSS. Any advice would be appreciated. EDIT: The problem isn't the width its the height of the container being overlapped by the new height of the now populated grid

I see the only way: detect type of file by it's extension and then, depending on file type, try to get information about it (by Imagemagick or ffmpeg). Is there any other ways? Thank you.

  I am trying to read in a series of tab delimited text files into existing MySQL tables. • Unable to run cvlc in a script

  I'm creating a script that issues a few curl commands in order to access a time-protected mms stream link, then set up a relay using cvlc (vlc's command line interface) for my own use on an unencumbered player. The curl aspect of this is working, as I can run as a browser and curl side by side and get the same access url. (It's time locked meaning the stream will work forever, but you have to connect quickly or the URL will time out.) The very end of the script prints the command I will run, which is then followed up by "exec $CMD".   Hi all, I want to create a mark sheet recognizer. Here is the description: My system uses black and white color scheme. The mark sheet paper has a small black rectangle on each corner and an additional small black rectangle, to determine orientation, near one of the previous rectangles. The paper is scanned to yield an image (in bmp format for example). The first step is to locate these five references in image as eficient as possible. • How can I run a Perl program when I don't have ssh or shell access?

  I just installed an IRC bot, B****X (Don't ask, I don't know - the real name is not censored). I did all of the configuration and chmod'ed the pl files to 755, but running it won't work. My host does not allow SSH/Shell (which is how the documentation says to runs he script), but just going to the URL usually works because of this. However, I get a 500 (Internal Server Error) error.   So I'm running through a list of things and have code that creates an .xml files with IO::File called $doc, then I make a new writer with XML::Writer(OUTPUT => $doc). More code runs and I build a big XML file with XML::Writer. Then, near the end of the file, I find out if I need this file at all. If I do need it, I just: $writer->end(); $doc->close(); but if I don't need it, what should I enter to just delete all data I've stored/saved and move onto the next file? I tried unlink($docpath) (before and after $doc->close()), the file was not deleted.
