  • Designing model/database for distance between any two locations (that may change)

    We should create a web app which has a number of events each with a location (created as user-generated content, so the number of events will be increasingly large). The distance between any events should be available, for example to determine the top 5 closest events and such things. Users may change the locations of events. How should one design the database/model for this (in a scalable way)? I was thinking of doing it with a "distance table" (like so http://www.deutschland-tourist.info/images/entfernungstabelle.gif). Then every time, if a location changes, one row and one column have to be recalculated (this should be done with a delayed job, because it is not important to have the changes instantly). Possible problems in Scaling: Database to large (n² items for n events), too much calculation to be done. For example we should see if this is okay for 10.000 users. If each has created just one event, then this would be 100 million integers... Do you think this would be a good way to do it efficiently? How could one realize such a distance table with an rails model? Is it possible with a SQL databse? Would you start other approaches?

    I'm developing an app in Google App Engine. One of my methods is taking never completing, which makes me think it's caught in an infinite loop. I've stared at it, but can't figure it out.   • Bash PATH: How long is too long?

    Hi, I'm currently designing a software quarantine pattern to use on Ubuntu. I'm not sure how standard "quarantine" is in this context, so here is what I hope to accomplish... Inside a particular quarantine is all of the stuff one needs to run an application (bin, share, lib, etc.). Ideally, the quarantine has no leaks, which means it's not relying on any code outside of itself on the system. A quarantine can be defined as a set of executables (and some environment settings needed to make them run). I think it will be beneficial to separate the built packages enough such that upgrading to a newer version of the quarantine won't require rebuilding the whole thing. I'll be able to update just a few packages, and then the new quarantine can use some of old parts and some of the new parts. One issue I'm wondering about is the environment variables I'll be setting up to use a particular quarantines. Is there a hard limit on how big PATH can be? (either in number of characters, or in the number of directories it contains) Might a path be so long that it affects performance? Thanks very much, Andrew p.s. Any other wisdom that might help my design would be greatly appreciated :)

  • HttpWebRequest possibly slowing website

    Using Visual studio 2012, C#.net 4.5 , SQL Server 2008, Feefo, Nopcommerce Hey guys I have Recently implemented a new review service into a current site we have. When the change went live the first day all worked fine. Since then though the sending of sales to Feefo hasnt been working, There are no logs either of anything going wrong. In the OrderProcessingService.cs in Nop Commerce's Service, i call a HttpWebrequest when an order has been confirmed as completed. Now: this hasnt been happening all week since the 15th (day of the implementation) the site has been grinding to a halt recently. The stream and reader in the the var content is there for debugging. Im wondering does the code redflag anything to you that could relate to the process of website? Also note i have run some SQL statements to see if there is any deadlocks or large escalations, so far seems fine, Logs have also been fine just the usual logging of Bots. Any help would be much appreciated! EDIT: also note that this code is in a method that is called and wrapped in A try catch UPDATE: well forget about the "not sending", thats because i was just told my code was rolled back last week

    Hi guys, I have a database that a time filed that is stored in this format "2010.06.04. | 18:53 01". What I need is to select rows that have a specific date, for example "2010.06.04." Right now I am doing it my first selecting all rows and then looping through them and adding ones with the specified date to a new array. Maybe there is an easier way to do it and I somehow can select it using mysqli_query? Thanks!

  • Strange behavior with large Object Types

    I recognized that calling a method on an Oracle Object Type takes longer when the instance gets bigger. The code below just adds rows to a collection stored in the Object Type and calls the empty dummy-procedure in the loop. Calls are taking longer when more rows are in the collection.   • Ping remote server and wait to get data

    Hi I'm building my first application for android and I've reached a point where I can't find a solution even have no idea what to search for in Google. So the problem: I am pinging a remote server with GET request through the application passing some parameters like file_id. Then the server gives back confirmation if the file exists or error otherwise, both in plain text. The error string is $$$ERROR$$$. Actually the confirmation is JSON string that holds the path to the file. If the file doesn't exists on the server it generated the error message and start downloading the file and processing it which normally takes 10-30 seconds. What would be the best way to check if the file is ready for download? I have DownloadFile class that extends AsyncTask but before I reach the point to download the file I need the URL which is dependant on the previous request which is in the main class in the UI thread.   • What's the correct terminology for something that isn't quite classification nor regression?

    Let's say that I have a problem that is basicly classification. That is, given some input and a number of possible output classes, find the correct class for the given input. Neural networks and decision trees are some of the algorithms that may be used to solve such problems. These algorithms typically only emit a single result however: the resulting classification. Now what if I weren't only interested in one classification, but in the posterior probabilities that the input belongs to each of the classes. I.E., instead of the answer "This input belongs in class A", I want the answer "This input belongs to class A with 80%, class B with 15% and class C with 5%". My question is not on how to obtain these posterior probabilities, but rather on the correct terminology to describe the process of finding them. You could call it regression, since we are now trying to estimate a number of real valued numbers, but I am not quite sure if that's right. I feel it's not exactly classification either, it's something in between the two. Is there a word that describes the process of finding the class conditional posterior probabilities that some input belongs in each of the possible output classes? P.S. I'm not exactly sure if this question is enough of a programming question, but since it's about machine learning and machine learning generally involves a decent amount of programming, let's give it a shot.

When I record to stream, It records video in RIMM streaming format. when I try to play this video player gives error "Unsupported media format.". 2. When I record to a file. It will create a file of size 0. Using Invoke API: 1. In MMS mode it does not allow to record a video more than 30 seconds. 2. In Normal mode size of the file is very large. 3. Once I invoke camera application I do not have any control on application.   • Debugging instance of another thread altering my data

    I have a huge global array of structures. Some regions of the array are tied to individual threads and those threads can modify their regions of the array without having to use critical sections. But there is one special region of the array which all threads may have access to. The code that accesses these parts of the array needs to carefully use critical sections (each array element has its own critical section) to prevent any possibility of two threads writing to the structure simultaneously. Now I have a mysterious bug I am trying to chase, it is occurring unpredictably and very infrequently. It seems that one of the structures is being filled with some incorrect number. One obvious explanation is that another thread has accidentally been allowed to set this number when it should be excluded from doing so. Unfortunately it seems close to impossible to track this bug. The array element in which the bad data appears is different each time. What I would love to be able to do is set some kind of trap for the bug as follows: I would enter a critical section for array element N, then I know that no other thread should be able to touch the data, then (until I exit the critical section) set some kind of flag to a debugging tool saying "if any other thread attempts to change the data here please break and show me the offending patch of source code"... but I suspect no such tool exists... or does it? Or is there some completely different debugging methodology that I should be employing.
