Something is making my page perform an Ajax call multiple times... [read: I've never been more frust

NOTE: This is a long question. I've explained all the 'basics' at the top and then there's some further (optional) information for if you need it. Hi folks Basically last night this started happening at about 9PM whilst I was trying to restructure my code to make it a bit nicer for the designer to add a few bits to. I tried to fix it until 2AM at which point I gave up. Came back to it this morning, still baffled. I'll be honest with you, I'm a pretty bad Javascript developer. Since starting this project Javascript has been completely new to me and I've just learn as I went along. So please forgive me if my code structure is really bad (perhaps give a couple of pointers on how to improve it?). So, to the problem: to reproduce it, visit http://furnace.howcode.com (it's far from complete). This problem is a little confusing but I'd really appreciate the help. So in the second column you'll see three tabs The 'Newest' tab is selected by default. Scroll to the bottom, and 3 further results should be dynamically fetched via Ajax. Now click on the 'Top Rated' tab. You'll see all the results, but ordered by rating Scroll to the bottom of 'Top Rated'. You'll see SIX results returned. This is where it goes wrong. Only a further three should be returned (there are 18 entries in total). If you're observant you'll notice two 'blocks' of 3 returned. The first 'block' is the second page of results from the 'Newest' tab. The second block is what I just want returned. Did that make any sense? Never mind! So basically I checked this out in Firebug. What happens is, from a 'Clean' page (first load, nothing done) it calls ONE POST request to http://furnace.howcode.com/code/loadmore . But every time you load a new one of the tabs, it makes an ADDITIONAL POST request each time where there should normally only be ONE. So, can you help me? I'd really appreciate it! At this point you could start independent investigation or read on for a little further (optional) information. Thanks! Jack Further Info (may be irrelevant but here for reference): It's almost like there's some Javascript code or something being left behind that duplicates it each time. I thought it might be this code that I use to detect when the browser is scrolled to the bottom: var col = $('#col2'); col.scroll(function(){ if (col.outerHeight() == (col.get(0).scrollHeight - col.scrollTop())) loadMore(1); }); So what I thought was that code was left behind, and so every time you scroll #col2 (which contains different data for each tab) it detected that and added it for #newest as well. So, I made each tab click give #col2 a dynamic class - either .newestcol, .featuredcol, or .topratedcol. And then I changed the var col=$('.newestcol');dynamically so it would only detect it individually for each tab (makin' any sense?!). But hey, that didn't do anything. calling and killing a parent function with onmouseover and onmouseout events

I want to call the function upon the onmouseover="ParentFunction();" then kill it onmouseout="killParent();". Note: in my code the parent function is called initiate(); and the killer function is called reset(); which lies outside the parent function at the bottom of the script. Clustering on WebLogic exception on Failover

Hi all, I deploy an application on a WebLogic 10.3.2 cluster with two nodes, and a load balancer in front of the cluster. I have set the <core:init distributable="true" debug="true" /> My Session and Conversation classes implement Serializable. I start using the application being served by the first node. And I have only select operations . And below is the method which is used most often to execute my select queries. One tricky thing which I am not understanding is in my findById method i am using this line of code getSession().beginTransaction(); without which it gives me an error saying that this cannot happpen without a transaction. But nowhere I am closing this transaction. Optimized OCR black/white pixel algorithm

I am writing a simple OCR solution for a finite set of characters. That is, I know the exact way all 26 letters in the alphabet will look like. I am using C# and am able to easily determine if a given pixel should be treated as black or white. I am generating a matrix of black/white pixels for every single character. So for example, the letter I (capital i), might look like the following: 01110 00100 00100 00100 01110 Note: all points, which I use later in this post, assume that the top left pixel is (0, 0), bottom right pixel is (4, 4). 1's represent black pixels, and 0's represent white pixels. I would create a corresponding matrix in C# like this: CreateLetter("I", new List<List<bool>>() { new List<bool>() { false, true, true, true, false }, new List<bool>() { false, false, true, false, false }, new List<bool>() { false, false, true, false, false }, new List<bool>() { false, false, true, false, false }, new List<bool>() { false, true, true, true, false } }); I know I could probably optimize this part by using a multi-dimensional array instead, but let's ignore that for now, this is for illustrative purposes. Every letter is exactly the same dimensions, 10px by 11px (10px by 11px is the actual dimensions of a character in my real program. I simplified this to 5px by 5px in this posting since it is much easier to "draw" the letters using 0's and 1's on a smaller image). Now when I give it a 10px by 11px part of an image to analyze with OCR, it would need to run on every single letter (26) on every single pixel (10 * 11 = 110) which would mean 2,860 (26 * 110) iterations (in the worst case) for every single character. I was thinking this could be optimized by defining the unique characteristics of every character. So, for example, let's assume that the set of characters only consists of 5 distinct letters: I, A, O, B, and L. These might look like the following: 01110 00100 00100 01100 01000 00100 01010 01010 01010 01000 00100 01110 01010 01100 01000 00100 01010 01010 01010 01000 01110 01010 00100 01100 01110 After analyzing the unique characteristics of every character, I can significantly reduce the number of tests that need to be performed to test for a character. For example, for the "I" character, I could define it's unique characteristics as having a black pixel in the coordinate (3, 0) since no other characters have that pixel as black. So instead of testing 110 pixels for a match on the "I" character, I reduced it to a 1 pixel test. You also want to guarantee that you have the minimum set of unique characteristics of a letter since you want it to be optimized as much as possible. I want to create an algorithm that will identify the unique characteristics of all the letters and would generate similar code to that above. I would then use this optimized black/white matrix to identify characters. How do I take the 26 letters that have all their black/white pixels filled in (e.g. the CreateLetter code block) and convert them to an optimized set of unique characteristics that define a letter (e.g. the new OcrLetter() code block)? And how would I guarantee that it is the most efficient definition set of unique characteristics (e.g. instead of defining 6 points as the unique characteristics, there might be a way to do it with 1 or 2 points, as the letter "I" in my example was able to). An alternative solution I've come up with is using a hash table, which will reduce it from 2,860 iterations to 110 iterations, a 26 time reduction. This is how it might work: I would populate it with data similar to the following: Letters["01110 00100 00100 00100 01110"] = "I"; Letters["00100 01010 01110 01010 01010"] = "A"; Letters["00100 01010 01010 01010 00100"] = "O"; Letters["01100 01010 01100 01010 01100"] = "B"; Now when I reach a location in the image to process, I convert it to a string such as: "01110 00100 00100 00100 01110" and simply find it in the hash table. This solution seems very simple, however, this still requires 110 iterations to generate this string for each letter. In big O notation, the algorithm is the same since O(110N) = O(2860N) = O(N) for N letters to process on the page. However, it is still improved by a constant factor of 26, a significant improvement (e.g. instead of it taking 26 minutes, it would take 1 minute). Update: Most of the solutions provided so far have not addressed the issue of identifying the unique characteristics of a character and rather provide alternative solutions. I am still looking for this solution which, as far as I can tell, is the only way to achieve the fastest OCR processing. I just came up with a partial solution: For each pixel, in the grid, store the letters that have it as a black pixel. CreatePixel(new Point(2, 4), new List<Char>() { 'I', 'O', 'B', 'L' }); CreatePixel(new Point(3, 4), new List<Char>() { 'I', 'A', 'L' }); CreatePixel(new Point(4, 4), new List<Char>() { }); Now for every letter, in order to find the unique characteristics, you need to look at which buckets it belongs to, as well as the amount of other characters in the bucket. So let's take the example of "I". We go to all the buckets it belongs to (1,0; 2,0; 3,0; ...; 3,4) and see that the one with the least amount of other characters is (3,0). In fact, it only has 1 character, meaning it must be an "I" in this case, and we found our unique characteristic. You can also do the same for pixels that would be white. Notice that bucket (2,0) contains all the letters except for "L", this means that it could be used as a white pixel test. Similarly, (2,4) doesn't contain an 'A'. Buckets that either contain all the letters or none of the letters can be discarded immediately, since these pixels can't help define a unique characteristic (e.g. 1,1; 4,0; 0,1; 4,4). It gets trickier when you don't have a 1 pixel test for a letter, for example in the case of 'O' and 'B'. Let's walk through the test for 'O'... It's contained in the following buckets: // Bucket Count Letters // 2,0 4 I, A, O, B // 3,1 3 A, O, B // 3,2 2 A, O // 2,4 4 I, O, B, L Additionally, we also have a few white pixel tests that can help: (I only listed those that are missing at most 2). The Missing Count was calculated as (5 - Bucket.Count). // Bucket Missing Count Missing Letters // 1,0 2 A, O // 1,1 2 I, O // 2,2 2 O, L // 3,4 2 O, B So now we can take the shortest black pixel bucket (3,2) and see that when we test for (3,2) we know it is either an 'A' or an 'O'. So we need an easy way to tell the difference between an 'A' and an 'O'. We could either look for a black pixel bucket that contains 'O' but not 'A' (e.g. 2,4) or a white pixel bucket that contains an 'O' but not an 'A' (e.g. 1,1). Either of these could be used in combination with the (3,2) pixel to uniquely identify the letter 'O' with only 2 tests. This seems like a simple algorithm when there are 5 characters, but how would I do this when there are 26 letters and a lot more pixels overlapping? For example, let's say that after the (3,2) pixel test, it found 10 different characters that contain the pixel (and this was the least from all the buckets). Now I need to find differences from 9 other characters instead of only 1 other character. How would I achieve my goal of getting the least amount of checks as possible, and ensure that I am not running extraneous tests?

Help with Java Program for Prime numbers

Hello everyone, I was wondering if you can help me with this program. I have been struggling with it for hours and have just trashed my code because the TA doesn't like how I executed it. I am completely hopeless and if anyone can help me out step by step, I would greatly appreciate it. In this project you will write a Java program that reads a positive integer n from standard input, then prints out the first n prime numbers. We say that an integer m is divisible by a non-zero integer d if there exists an integer k such that m = k d , i.e. if d divides evenly into m. Equivalently, m is divisible by d if the remainder of m upon (integer) division by d is zero. We would also express this by saying that d is a divisor of m. A positive integer p is called prime if its only positive divisors are 1 and p. The one exception to this rule is the number 1 itself, which is considered to be non-prime. A positive integer that is not prime is called composite. Euclid showed that there are infinitely many prime numbers. The prime and composite sequences begin as follows: Primes: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, … Composites: 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, … There are many ways to test a number for primality, but perhaps the simplest is to simply do trial divisions. Begin by dividing m by 2, and if it divides evenly, then m is not prime. Otherwise, divide by 3, then 4, then 5, etc. If at any point m is found to be divisible by a number d in the range 2 d m-1, then halt, and conclude that m is composite. Otherwise, conclude that m is prime. A moment’s thought shows that one need not do any trial divisions by numbers d which are themselves composite. For instance, if a trial division by 2 fails (i.e. has non-zero remainder, so m is odd), then a trial division by 4, 6, or 8, or any even number, must also fail. Thus to test a number m for primality, one need only do trial divisions by prime numbers less than m. Furthermore, it is not necessary to go all the way up to m-1. One need only do trial divisions of m by primes p in the range 2 p m . To see this, suppose m 1 is composite. Then there exist positive integers a and b such that 1 < a < m, 1 < b < m, and m = ab . But if both a m and b m , then ab m, contradicting that m = ab . Hence one of a or b must be less than or equal to m . To implement this process in java you will write a function called isPrime() with the following signature: static boolean isPrime(int m, int[] P) This function will return true or false according to whether m is prime or composite. The array argument P will contain a sufficient number of primes to do the testing. Specifically, at the time isPrime() is called, array P must contain (at least) all primes p in the range 2 p m . For instance, to test m = 53 for primality, one must do successive trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, and 7. We go no further since 11 53 . Thus a precondition for the function call isPrime(53, P) is that P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, and P[3] = 7 . The return value in this case would be true since all these divisions fail. Similarly to test m =143 , one must do trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 (since 13 143 ). The precondition for the function call isPrime(143, P) is therefore P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, P[3] = 7 , and P[4] =11. The return value in this case would be false since 11 divides 143. Function isPrime() should contain a loop that steps through array P, doing trial divisions. This loop should terminate when 2 either a trial division succeeds, in which case false is returned, or until the next prime in P is greater than m , in which case true is returned. Function main() in this project will read the command line argument n, allocate an int array of length n, fill the array with primes, then print the contents of the array to stdout according to the format described below. In the context of function main(), we will refer to this array as Primes[]. Thus array Primes[] plays a dual role in this project. On the one hand, it is used to collect, store, and print the output data. On the other hand, it is passed to function isPrime() to test new integers for primality. Whenever isPrime() returns true, the newly discovered prime will be placed at the appropriate position in array Primes[]. This process works since, as explained above, the primes needed to test an integer m range only up to m , and all of these primes (and more) will already be stored in array Primes[] when m is tested. Of course it will be necessary to initialize Primes[0] = 2 manually, then proceed to test 3, 4, … for primality using function isPrime(). The following is an outline of the steps to be performed in function main(). • Check that the user supplied exactly one command line argument which can be interpreted as a positive integer n. If the command line argument is not a single positive integer, your program will print a usage message as specified in the examples below, then exit. • Allocate array Primes[] of length n and initialize Primes[0] = 2 . • Enter a loop which will discover subsequent primes and store them as Primes[1] , Primes[2], Primes[3] , ……, Primes[n -1] . This loop should contain an inner loop which walks through successive integers and tests them for primality by calling function isPrime() with appropriate arguments. • Print the contents of array Primes[] to stdout, 10 to a line separated by single spaces. In other words Primes[0] through Primes[9] will go on line 1, Primes[10] though Primes[19] will go on line 2, and so on. Reading Data from DDFS ValueError: No JSON object could be decoded

I'm running dozens of map reduce jobs for a number of different purposes using disco. My data has grown enormous and I thought I would try using DDFS for a change rather than standard txt files. I've followed the DISCO map/reduce example Counting Words as a map/reduce job, without to much difficulty and with the help of others, Reading JSON specific data into DISCO I've gotten past one of my latest problems. I'm trying to read data in/out of ddfs to better chunk and distribute it but am having a bit of trouble. Need AngularJS grid resizing directive to resize "thumbnail" that contains no image

I need all of the grid elements to have the same size so they stack properly. I created an angularJs directive that auto resizes the grid element when placed in said grid element. I have 2 directives that do this for me Directive 1: onload Directive 2: imageonload Directive 2 works. If the grid element uses an image, after the image loads then the directive triggers an event that sends the grid elements height to all other grid elements. If that height sent out via the event is greater than that of the grid element which is listening to the event then that listening grid element changes it's height to be the greater height. This way the largest height becomes the height for all the grid elements. Directive 1 does not work. This one is placed on the outer most grid elements html element, and is triggered when the element loads. The problem is that when the element loads and the onload directive is called AngularJS has not yet filled out the data in said grid element. The outcome is that the real height after AngularJS data binds is not broadcast as an event. My only solution I have thought of (but haven't tried) is to add an image url to an image that exists but doesn't have any data in it, and place that in the grid element (the one that didn't have any images before placing the blank one in). I could then call imageonload instead of onload and I pretty sure the angularjs data binding will have taken place by then. the problem is that that is pretty hacky. I would rather be able to have not an image in the grid element, and be able to call my custom onload directive and have the onload directive calculate the height AFTER angularJS data binds to all of the data binding variables in the grid element. We have to have this so the directive knows which html element to set the new height on. also I use the "title" attribute to set which grid this grid resizing is for (that way you can use the directive multiple times on the same page for different grids and not have the events for the wrong grid triggered). Does anyone know how I can get the "onload" directive to get called AFTER angularJS binds to the grid element? Just for completeness here are 2 images (almost looks like just 1), the second is a grid that contains grid elements that have images and use the "imageonload" directive and the first is a grid that contains grid elements that do not use images and only uses the "onload" directive.

Why Java servlet can't get Paypal IPN messages everytime ?

I have a Java servlet running on my notebook with Windows Vista, I set up a static IP, did port forwarding and registered for a free DDNS service, now my servlet is running, I gave the url to Paypal to send me IPN messages, I went on to it's sandbox site got to the test tools page, tried to send test messages by clicking the "Send IPN" button, most of the time it would fail, the error is : "IPN delivery failed. Unable to connect to the specified URL. Please verify the URL and try again." But maybe 1 in 10 times, it might be successful and my servlet would get the message, and I looked at the messages I got, they are in correct format. So I called Paypal asking why, he said I shouldn't run the servlet on my notebook, in stead I should run it on the web server, but I told him my ISP doesn't support Java on their server, and since I did all the above steps, shouldn't it be the same to run the servlet on my notebook ? He said his test showed he couldn't get to my servlet, but I asked why maybe 1 in 10 times it could get through ? If there is something wrong with running it on my notebook, then 100% times it should fail, am I correct on this point ? But anyway he said that's all he could do, and I should troubleshoot it myself. How to simulate browser form POST method using PHP/cURL

I'm trying to simulate browser with POST method using PHP/cURL. When I looked at that live Http header it shows Content-Type: multipart/form-data. I checked on the internet where it was suggested that cURL will send multipart/form-data when a custom headers is specified to Content-Type: multipart/form-data. $headers = array( 'Content-Type' => 'multipart/form-data; boundary='.$boundary ); This didn't work for me either when I print_r(curl_getinfo()) it showed [content_type] => text/html; charset=UTF-8 Which means cURL sent a default headers I also read that sending/uploading a file with cURL will cause data to be send as multipart/form-data. security negotiation with the remote endpoint has failed. This may be due to absent or incorrectly specified EndpointIdentity in the EndpointAddress used to create the channel. Please verify the EndpointIdentity specified or implied by the EndpointAddress correctly identifies the remote endpoint. Is there a faster way to rotate a large bitmap by 90 or 270 degrees than simply doing a nested loop with inverted coordinates? The bitmaps are 8bpp and typically 2048*2400*8bpp Currently I do this by simply copying with argument inversion, roughly (pseudo code: for x = 0 to 2048-1 for y = 0 to 2048-1 dest[x][y]=src[y][x]; (In reality I do it with pointers, for a bit more speed, but that is roughly the same magnitude) GDI is quite slow with large images, and GPU load/store times for textures (GF7 cards) are in the same magnitude as the current CPU time. Any tips, pointers? An in-place algorithm would even be better, but speed is more important than being in-place. Target is Delphi, but it is more an algorithmic question. SSE(2) vectorization no problem, it is a big enough problem for me to code it in assembler Duplicates How do you rotate a two dimensional array?. As such this: Set union(Set x, Set y) { String[] newtemparray = new String[x.getLength]; newtemparray = x.getMember; return x; } I got this error: symbol : variable getLength location: class Set String[] newtemparray = new String[x.getLength]; ^ d:\javaprojects\Set.java:122: cannot find symbol symbol : variable getMember location: class Set newtemparray = x.getMember; ^ 2 errors My approach for union would be: *) create temporary array of string with size of the object x length. *) store object x members to temporary array by looping the object and calling the getMember *) loop object y members and check if element exist against temporary array. *) discard if it exist/add if it is not there *) return obj x with the union array. thanks, lupin

Why can't HTC Droid running OTA 2.1 communicate with RFCOMM?

Yesterday we received OTA Android 2.1 on my wife's HTC Droid - HOORAY!!! I am finally able to load my carputer app on her phone. Well we loaded it, but it doesn't work. Specifically, it connects but sees no I/O!!! I paired, re-paired, and re-paired again, every time its the same problem: connect() says we connected successfully, but any attempt to send or receive data appears to work but no data ever arrives in the input buffer. The device I'm connecting to uses AT commands. ATI should respond with a device ID. That works fine when I run the app on my Moto Droid, but on the HTC droid, no data is ever present in the inputstream/buffer. Personally, I'm feeling pretty sure it's a bug or limitation in this release for the HTC (because the app works great on my Moto A855 Droid). Can anybody comment on the issue? To make things clear - Suppose a Tutor name "Sandeepan Nath" has created a pack "My first pack", then:- Searching "Sandeepan Nath" returns Sandeepan Nath. Searching "Sandeepan first" returns Sandeepan Nath. Searching "Sandeepan second" does not return Sandeepan Nath. ====================================================================================== The problem The results returned by the above query are correct (AND logic working as per expectation), but the time taken by the query on heavily loaded databases is like 25 seconds as against normal query timings of the order of 0.005 - 0.0002 seconds, which makes it totally unusable. It is possible that some of the delay is being caused because all the possible fields have not yet been indexed, but I would appreciate a better query as a solution, optimized as much as possible, displaying the same results ========================================================================================== How tags work in this system? Every other list element is either given the class attribute li1 or li2 (the purpose of which is to alternate the colors). The list elements need the white-space: pre because the white space before and after the text node is important. The pre is to be 80% of the containing element (which ends up being 80% of the window's width). In the event of overflow in the x dimension, I want scrolling. I did all this in the above CSS, and it almost works. The issue I am having is that the background colors of the list elements don't extend with the content. They seem to be capped to the original width of the pre and/or ol element as demonstrated in the following picture where I scroll all the way right as possible: I tinkered with the CSS for a while, but I cannot determine the root cause for this or the fix. Why would a WebService return nulls when the actual service returns data?

I have a webservice (out of my control) that I have to talk to. I also have a packet-sniffer on the line, and (SURPRISE!!!) the developers of the webservice aren't lying. They are actually sending back all of the data that I requested. But the web-service code that is auto-generated from the WSDL file is giving me "null" as a value. I used their WSDL file to generate my Web Reference. I checked my data types with the datatypes that the WSDL file has declared. And I used the code as listed below to perform the calls: DT_MaterialMaster_LookupRequest req = new DT_MaterialMaster_LookupRequest(); req.MaterialNumber = "101*"; req.DocumentNo = ""; req.Description = "Pipe*"; req.Plant = "0000"; MI_MaterialMaster_Lookup_OBService srv = new MI_MaterialMaster_Lookup_OBService(); DT_MaterialMaster_Response resp = srv.MI_MaterialMaster_Lookup_OB(new DT_MaterialMaster_LookupRequest[] { req }); // Note that the response here is ALWAYS null!! .htaccess not working (mod_rewrite)

Edit: I am pretty sure my .htaccess file is NOT being executed, and the problem is NOT with my rewrite rules. I have not having any luck getting my .htaccess with mod_rewrite working. Basically all I am trying to do is remove 'www' from "http://www.site.com" and "https://www.site.com". If there is anything I am missing (conf files, etc let me know I willl update this) I jsut can't see whats wrong here... I am using a 1&1 VPS III Virtual private server... anyone ever have this issue? I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTS. In this example, I am considering - tutor "Sandeepan Nath" has created a class called "first class" tutor "Bob Cratchit" has created a class called "new class" Desired search results- AND logic to be appied on the search keywords and match against class and tutor data(class name + tutor name), in other words, All those classes be shown such that all the search terms are present in the class name or its tutor name. Example to be clear - Searching "first class" returns class with id_wc = 1. Working Searching "Sandeepan class" should also return class with id_wc = 1. Not working in System 2. Problem with profile editing and searching To tell in one sentence, I am facing a conflict between the ease of profile edition (edition of tag relations when tutor profiles are edited) and the ease of search logic. In the beginning, we had one table structure and search was easy but tag edition logic was very clumsy and unmaintainable(Check System 1 in the section below) . So we created separate tag relations tables to make profile edition simpler but search has become difficult. Please dump the tables so that you can run the search query I have given below and see the results. System 1 (previous system - search easy - profile edition difficult):- Only one table called All_Tag_Relations table had the all the tag relations. The tags table below is common to both systems 1 and 2. Example, for class with id_wc=1, the tag rel records with id_tag_rel = 3 and 4 are actually extras if you compare with the tag rel records with id_tag_rel = 1 and 2. But search has become really difficult, so on being advised to use a Temporary table, I am creating one at every search request, then dumping all the necessary data and then searching from it, I am creating this All_Tag_Relations table at search run time. Here I am just dumping all the data from the two tables Tutors_Tag_Relations and Webclasses_Tag_Relations. But, I am still not able to get classes if I search with tutor name This is the query which searches "first class". Running them on both the systems shows correct results (returns the class with id_wc = 1). That solves my problem in a nice way. As you can figure out, the reason why it does not work in system 2 is that in system 1, for every class, one additional tag relation linking class and tutor name is present. e.g. for class first class, (records with id_tag_rel 3 and 4) which returns the class on searching with tutor name. So, you see the trade-off between the search and profile edition difficulty with the two systems. How do I overcome both. I have to reach a conclusion soon. So far my reasoning is it is definitely not good from a code maintainability point of view to follow the single tag rel table structure of system one, because in a real system while editing a field like "tutor qualifications", there can be as many records in tag rels table as there are words in qualification of a tutor (one word in a field = one tag relation). Now suppose a tutor has 100 classes. When he edits his qualification, all the tag rel rows corresponding to him are deleted and then as many copies are to be created (as per the new qualification data) as there are classes. This becomes particularly difficult if later more searcheable fields are added. The code cannot be robust. Is the best solution to follow system 2 (edition has to be in one table - no extra work for each and every class) and somehow re-create the all_tag_relations table like system 1 (from the tables tutor_tag_relations and webclasses_tag_relations), creating the extra tutor tag rels for each and every class by a tutor (which is currently missing in system 2's temporary all_tag_relations table). That would be a time consuming logic script. I doubt that table can be recreated without resorting to PHP sript (mysql alone cannot do that). But the problem is that running all this at search time will make search definitely slow. So, how do such systems work? How are such situations handled? I thought about we can run a cron which initiates that PHP script, say every 1 minute and replaces the existing all_tag_relations table as per new tag rels from tutor_tag_relations and webclasses_tag_relations (replaces means creates a new table, deletes the original and renames the new one as all_tag_relations, otherwise search won't work during that period- or is there any better way to that?). Anyway, the result would be that any changes by tutors will reflect in search in the next 1 minute and not immediately. An alternateve would be to initate that PHP script every time a tutor edits his profile. But here again, since many users may edit their profiles concurrently, will the creation of so many tables be a burden and can mysql make the server slow? Any help would be appreciated and working solution will be accepted as answer. Thanks, Sandeepan
