• How far did DevExpress get with Javascript refactoring?

  Over a year ago, I remember watching one of DevExpress evangelists previewing or at least promoting rich Javascript refactoring (beyond just limited intellisense) within the Visual Studio shell, I recall part of CodeRush/DevExpress product line. I was excited. On checking today (lmgtfy) I can find only very very limited reference to it, just one small italtic line about beta in product description, no videos, no blog posts, no community buzz. Was it dropped? Vapourware? Poor implementation that they dont even promote it? With Javascript arguably the most popular programming language ever and with a VM for it on practically every machine in last 10 years, why is editor support so poor? (Compared with those for Java and C#)? You see the likes of ScottGu bragging we now have jQuery intellisense but compare this to richness of C# support in the IDE it is a joke. Someone once said since there are many style of writing Javascript a rich IDE (beyond intellisense) with refactoring support is difficult, but if several engines can interpret/compile JS with same result surely it should be hard to analysis it to support stuff like rename variable, extract method, move to another namespace (or JS minic of it), etc.. Am I wrong?

When I call DoWork1 it always returns "error undefined" and the WCF call never happens. I've tried every combination of: [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.WrappedRequest, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json, RequestFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json)] I can think of and it does not help. I must be missing something simple. There are MANY posting about how to make this work, and other than the "no parameter" version, none have worked for me. Can anyone post a sample MVC2 jQuery 1.4 .NET 4.0 WCF VS2010 working sample or spot the likely error? Thanks.

• Android MediaPlayer ignores it's internal volume when the system volume changes

  Hi, here is my situation: I have a media player playing music in an Android application. I've found that with certain headphones, the volume is much too loud even when the volume is set to it's lowest setting. As a result, I want to change the volume of the music for all volume levels to be 10% of what it normally is (actually, this value is user-defined of course). The following works perfectly: mediaPlayer.setVolume(0.1f, 0.1f); The volume of the music is now at a good level for listening. However, if the user now changes the volume using the volume rocker (thus changing the music stream volume), the media player changes the volume as expected, but it also seems to reset the 'setVolume' parameters to 1.0, causing a massive volume change. Setting the volume back to 0.1 sets the volume to how it should be (which is 10% of the current music stream volume). To quote the Android docs for the MediaPlayer.setVolume method: This API is recommended for balancing the output of audio streams within an application How can you do this if it gets reset to 1.0 each time the system volume changes? • Serializing java objects with respect to xml schema loaded at runtime

  I call an XML document three-layered if its structure is laid out as following: the root element contains some container elements (I'll call them entities), each of them has some simpleType elements inside (I'll call them properties). Something like that: <data> <spaceship> <number>1024</number> <name>KTHX</name> </spaceship> <spaceship> <number>1624</number> <name>LEXX</name> </spaceship> <knife> <length>10</length> </knife> </data> where spaceship is an entity, and number is a property. My problem is stated below: Given schema: an arbitrary xsd file describing a three-layered document, loaded at runtime. xmlDocument: an xml document conforming to the schema. Create A Map<String, Map <String, Object>> containing data from the xmlDocument, where first key corresponds to entity, second key correponds to this entity's property, and the value corresponds to this property's value, after casting it to a proper java type (for example, if the schema sets the property value to be xs:int, then it should be cast to Integer). What is the easiest way to achieve this result with existing libraries? P. S. JAXB is not really an option here. The schema might be arbitrary and unknown at compile-time. Also I wish to avoid an excessive use of reflection (associated with converting the beans to maps). I'm looking for something that would allow me to make the typecasts while xml is being parsed.

• Ruby XMLRPC::CLIENT issue under Rails 2.3.5 with Ruby 1.8.6

  I'm trying to implement a ping to an xmlrpc server written in PHP under CodeIgniter. The system currently works as expected when receiving pings from WordPress-based blogs, but I'm unable to generate a successful ping from Rails. • Wpf binding to a function

  I've a created a simple scrollviewer (pnlDayScroller) and want to have a separate horizontal scrollbar (associated scroller) to do the horizontal scrolling. All works with the below code accept I need to bind the visibility of the associated scroller. I can't simply bind this to the visibility property of the horizontal template part of the scroll viewer as I've set this to be always hidden. • Using git subtree to clone a subdirectory of a project with versioning history then merge it back af

  I am a graduate student with many scripts, bibliography data in bibtex, thesis draft in latex, presentations in open office, posters in scribus, and figures and result data. I would like to put everything in one project under version control. Then when I need to work on a portion such as the bibliography data, I would like to check that subdirectory out, modify it as necessary and merge it back.I would like the ability to check out one version to my home computer, and a different one to my work computer and make changes to each independently and eventually merge them back. I would also like to be able to check out a piece of code from this big project and import it with versioning into a separate project. If I may changes I'd like to be able to merge them back to the original project. I am passing several Select statements, so the dataset contains multiple tables. I replaced $DataSet.Tables[0] with for ($i=0;$i -lt $DataSet.tables.count;$i++){ $Dataset.Tables[$i] } but the console only shows the content of the first table and blank lines for each records of what should be the second table. The only way to see the result is to change the code to $Dataset.Tables[$i] | out-string but I do not want strings, I want to have table objects to work with. When I assign what is returned by the Invoke-SQLCommand to a variable, I can see that I have an array of datarow objects but only from the first table. What happened to the second table? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• How to list column headers of a SQL Server table using sp_help perhaps?

  Hi, I have a few tables with 70-80 columns in them. I would like to populate them with somewhat random data, unless I will not be able to do so due to key violation, etc. The first step would be simply to get the list of all headers. There seem to be two ways: A) Run select * from table_of_interest; in MSFT SQL Server Management Studio 2008. Now, right-click the result and click "Copy With headers". However, I get zero rows back, and when I try to copy nothing + headers, I get: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Value cannot be null. Parameter name: data (System.Windows.Forms) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ This looks like a bug ... anyhow ... there is another way. B) I can run sp_help table_of_interest;. However, I end up getting too much back. I get 7 different tables back but I am only interested in the second one. The columns of the second table are: Column_name | Type | Computed | Length | Prec | Scale | Nullable | TrimTrailingBlanks | FixedLenNullInSource | Collation I might be interested in just a Column_name and Type, but maybe other columns. So ... since sp_help probably runs a bunch of queries ... how do I get under the hood? How can I run the second query AND filter down the number of columns that I am interested in? Many Thanks!

• Question about using ServiceModelEx's "WCFLogbook" from "Programming WCF Services" book

  I am attempting to compile/run a sample WCF application from Juval Lowy's website (author of Programming WCF Services & founder of IDesign). Of course the example application utilizes Juval's ServiceModelEx library and logs faults/errors to a "WCFLogbook" database. Unfortunately, when the sample app faults, I get the following new error: "Cannot open database "WCFLogbook" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'Bill-PC\Bill'." I suspect the error occurs as a result of not finding the "WCFLogbook" database, which I believe still needs to be created. Included in the library source directory, there are two files -WCFLogbookDataSet.xsd and WCFLogbook.sql; which neither seem to be referenced anywhere within the library code. This leads me to beleive that the sql and xsd files are there to be used to create the database somehow in SQL. Could someone please advise me if I am going in the correct direction here and if whether these files can be used to create the database (and if so, how)?

• Thread-safe data structures

  Hello, I have to design a data structure that is to be used in a multi-threaded environment. The basic API is simple: insert element, remove element, retrieve element, check that element exists. The structure's implementation uses implicit locking to guarantee the atomicity of a single API call. After i implemented this it became apparent, that what i really need is atomicity across several API calls. For example if a caller needs to check the existence of an element before trying to insert it he can't do that atomically even if each single API call is atomic: if(!data_structure.exists(element)) { data_structure.insert(element); } The example is somewhat awkward, but the basic point is that we can't trust the result of exists call anymore after we return from atomic context (the generated assembly clearly shows a minor chance of context switch between the two calls). What i currently have in mind to solve this is exposing the lock through the data structure's public API. This way clients will have to explicitly lock things, but at least they won't have to create their own locks. Is there a better commonly-known solution to these kinds of problems? And as long as we're at it, can you advise some good literature on thread-safe design? Thank you.

• Configuring xUnit test output in Hudson

  I have a simple PoC project in Hudson. The PoC has unit tests written via UnitTest++ and outputs the results as XML for consumption by xUnit to munge into jUnit format. Here are the salient relevant I have my project configured to use MSBuild to build the 2008 solution. The project contains both the dll it is to build and the unit tests which are run as a post-build step. My workspace in Hudson is set to c:\develop\money (Money is the name of the project) and in the Hudson console I can see the workspace folders, the solution file and output folders (/bin, /doc, etc). The test console app outputs its file 'money_unit_tests.xml' to the folder 'reports' (making c:\develop\money\reports). I've restarted Hudson since installing xUnit and setting the workspace. My field is a dbMemo because the maximum content length is up to a few hundred chars. It's not that long, and in fact the value I'm reading is only a dozen characters. But Excel just doesn't seem able to handle the Memo field content at all. My code... ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField") ...gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Any suggestions? Can Excel VBA actually get at memo field data? Or is it just completely impossible. I get exactly the same error from GetChunk as well. ActiveCell = oRs.Fields("memoField").GetChunk(0, 2) ...also gives error Run-time error '3146': ODBC--call failed. Converting to a text field makes everything work fine. However some data is truncated to 255 characters of course, which means that isn't a workable solution.

• Extjs Dynamic Grid

  Hi, I'm trying to create a dynamic grid using Extjs. The grid is built and displayed when a click event is fired then an ajax request is sent to the server to fetch the columns, records and records definition a.k.a Store Fields. Each node could have different grid structure and that depends on the level of the node in the tree. The end user sees the old grids and the new one. To mitigate this problem, I tried destroying the grid and also removing the grid element on each request, and that seems to solve the problem only that records never get displayed this time. if(grid) { grid.destroy(true); } The behavior i'm looking for is to display the result of a grid within a tab and if that tab exists replaced the old grid.   I checked the rest of the remoting questions, and this specific case did not seem to be addressed. I have a .NET Remoting server/client set up. On the server side I have an object with a method that can throw an exception, and a client which will try to call that method. This happens server side. The exception is never marshaled over to the client-side, and I cannot figure out why. All of the questions I have looked at address the issue of an exception being handled client-side, but it isn't the custom exception but a base type. In my case, I can't even get any exception to cross the remoting boundary to the client. Here is a copy of AuthenticationException. It is in the shared library between both server and client.   I've been tasked with porting a legacy Delphi application over to C# .Net. The original delphi developer left several months before I was hired. I'm receiving the E2010 Incompatible types: 'Integer' and 'Char' error for the below method. I'm trying to compile the application within the Delphi 2007 IDE, I've been told that original application is either Delphi 4 or 5 if that helps any. I understand what the error is telling me but I don't understand why\how it is applied to the code snippet below. Any help\direction would be greatly appreciated. I would like to send out the contents of each row as an email. • Complex SQL Query similar to a z order problem

  I have a complex SQL problem in MS SQL Server, and in drawing on a piece of paper I realized that I could think of it as a single bar filled with rectangles, each rectangle having segments with different Z orders. In reality it has nothing to do with z order or graphics at all, but more to do with some complex business rules that would be difficult to explain. Howoever, if anyone has ideas on how to solve the below that will give me my solution. I have the following data: ObjectID, PercentOfBar, ZOrder (where smaller is closer) A, 100, 6 B, 50, 5 B, 50, 4 C, 30, 3 C, 70, 6 The result of my query that I want is this, in any order: PercentOfBar, ZOrder 50, 5 20, 4 30, 3 Think of it like this, if I drew rectangle A, it would fill 100% of the bar and have a z order of 6. 66666666666 AAAAAAAAAAA If I then layed out rectangle B, consisting of two segments, both segments would cover up rectangle A resulting in the following rendering: 4444455555 BBBBBBBBBB As a rule of thumb, for a given rectangle, it's segments should be layed out such that the highest z order is to the right of the lower Z orders. Finally rectangle C would cover up only portions of Rectangle B with it's 30% segment that is z order 3, which would be on the left. • OCR with Neural network: data extraction

  I'm using the AForge library framework and its neural network. At the moment when I train my network I create lots of images (one image per letter per font) at a big size (30 pt), cut out the actual letter, scale this down to a smaller size (10x10 px) and then save it to my harddisk. I can then go and read all those images, creating my double[] arrays with data. At the moment I do this on a pixel basis. So once I have successfully trained my network I test the network and let it run on a sample image with the alphabet at different sizes (uppercase and lowercase). But the result is not really promising. I trained the network so that RunEpoch had an error of about 1.5 (so almost no error), but there are still some letters left that do not get identified correctly in my test image. Now my question is: Is this caused because I have a faulty learning method (pixelbased vs. the suggested use of receptors in this article: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/neural_network_ocr.aspx - are there other methods I can use to extract the data for the network?) or can this happen because my segmentation-algorithm to extract the letters from the image to look at is bad? Does anyone have ideas on how to improve it?
