• Flattening PDF transparency

  I have a PDF, made with Inkscape, that uses transparent colors. This image shall be used in a LaTeX document. While preserving the transparency is nice for editing, it can be a problem for printing. Printing usually involves PDF to PS conversion. Since Postscript does not support transparency, this requires either flatting, i.e. creating a vector graphic that works without transparency or rastering, i.e. rendering a bitmap image. When a PDF document containing such a figure is printed (or converted to PS) using Evince (or Cairo or Ghostscript), the whole page gets rendered as a bitmap, rendering fonts ugly (different from other pages). (Adobe Acrobat handles such PDFs well.) Unfortunately, converting the PDF figures to EPS (before including them with LaTeX) doesn't help much, because both pdftops and pdf2ps (again, Cairo or Ghostscript) rasterize the image, i.e. render a bitmap (saved as EPS). (This is slightly better, because it doesn't affect the whole page, but I'd still prefer a vector graphics.) How can I flatten transparency with Inkscape or other software on Linux?

• Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

  I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

  I have a couple of videos at 1920x800 that use the MKV format (4.7 GB). A friend of mine has an old PC that has some problems playing them; the CPU is working at nearly 100%. Is it possible to convert these videos to a less CPU intensive video format? The final size is not a problem, it can also double or more. Into which format should I convert it and which software for Windows should I use (better if free)? Thank you in advance.

• How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• How do I structure code and builds for continuous delivery of multiple applications in a small team?

  Background: 3-5 developers supporting (and building new) internal applications for a non-software company. We use TFS although I don't think that matters much for my question. I want to be able to develop a deployment pipeline and adopt continuous integration / deployment techniques. Here's what our source tree looks like right now. We use a single TFS Team Project. $/MAIN/src/ $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/VSSOlution.sln $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/ApplicationAProject1.csproj $/MAIN/src/ApplicationA/ApplicationAProject2.csproj $/MAIN/src/ApplicationB/... $/MAIN/src/ApplicationC $/MAIN/src/SharedInfrastructureA $/MAIN/src/SharedInfrastructureB My Goal (a pretty typical promotion pipeline) When a code change is made to a given application I want to be able to build that application and auto-deploy that change to a DEV server. I may also need to build dependencies on Shared Infrastructure Components. I often also have some database scripts or changes as well If developer testing passes I want to have an manually triggered but automated deploy of that build on a STAGING server where end-users will review new functionality. Once it's approved by end users I want to a manually triggered auto-deploy to production Question: How can I best adopt continuous deployment techniques in a multi-application environment? A lot of the advice I see is more single-application-specific, how is that best applied to multiple applications? For step 1, do I simply setup a separate Team Build for each application? • Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it!   I recently bought a new  Macbook Pro (the 13” one) to dive into a new world of programming challenges as well as to get a more powerful netbook than my Packard Bell Dot which I’ve been using since last year. I’ve had immense pleasure using the netbook format and their small size in meetings (taking notes with XMind), surfing “anywhere”, and, of course blogging with windows live writer. So far the Mac is holding up, it’s sleek, responsive, and I’ve even begun looking at coding in Objective C with it, but in one arena, it is severely lacking: Blogging software. There is nothing that even comes close to Live Writer for getting your blog posts out. The few blogger applications that do exist on mac both look and feel medieval in comparison, AND some even cost money! It looks like some mac users actually install a virtual machine on their mac to run Windows XP just so they can use WLW. I’m not that extreme; instead, I’m hoping that the WLW team will write it’s awesome application as a Silverlight 4 app. That way, it would run on Mac and Windows (as a desktop app). I wonder if it will ever happen though…   PS: The image is of me, took it with the built-in camera on the mac and emailed it to the windows PC that I am writing on :)

• zip password crack possible?

  I have a piece of software i have to install on company laptops. The installer needs a serial to work properly, but i don't have it (my manager isn't here so i cant ask him). The installer tells me to ring a phone number which doesnt appear to be connected anymore. I would download win32dasm and ollydbg and have a go at cracking the installer but i dont really have time and i havnt done it in years. There is a zip file on the disc that looks like it contains all the program files but it is passworded. Is it feasible to crack this or will it take ages?

• Can't enable wireless lan on Fujitsu Siemens A1665G with Ubuntu 11.10 installed

  I saw my old Notebook yesterday and wanted to make that work again. On Windows XP the wireless worked still fine. Then I installed new Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and I'm sadly not able to make the wireless enabled. [I replaced Win XP entirely] lspci lists following network: 08:0a.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) So after recommendation from this link I installed the b43 firmware module. iwconfig prints the following: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associatd Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management: off As you can see, my wireless lan adapter is not turned on. sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto Doesn't change anything. Then I tried to make it work with rfkill. rfkill list 0: phy0: Wirless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes sudo rfkill unblock all rfkill list 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes remains the same. The question is now, how I could enable the hard blocked wireless LAN. There is no hardware switch for wlan integrated. However there is a button to change the state. I always thought this would be software sided, but it seems to make some hardware changes as well... The wireless LED is also not blinking (as it did on windows xp) I reset bios and searched for some settings in there, but it has only a few options and nothing to do with wireless settings, nothing works here.. At last I tried to install the acer hotkeys but I was not able to manage that. I installed the acerhkgui package, but in initializing progress, it was not able to compile acer hotkeys for my machine. There was a message that asm/linkage.h was not found while compiling. Do you have any ideas what I could do to make this hard blocked stuff disabled and my wireless card work? PS: I also tried sudo rm /dev/rfkill and a reboot to reinit that stuff... No success :(

• nvidia segfault crashes XServer (12.04 fresh install)

  I am on a fresh install of 12.04, and my video card is a Quadro FX 570, which appears to be supported (see output of unity_support_test below). But my Xserver crashes randomly and causes my session to just shutdown and bring me back to the logging screen. This happens several times per hour. • How to access an encrypted INI file from C on an embedded system with little RAM

  I want to encrypt an INI file using a Delphi program on a Windows PC. Then I need to decrypt & access it in C on an embedded system with little RAM. I will do that once & fetch all info; I will not be consutinuously accessing the INI file whenever my program needs data from the file. Any advice as to which encryption to use? Nothing too heavyweight, just good enough for "Security through obscurity" and FOSS for both Delphi & C. And how can I decrypt, get all the info from the INI file - using as little RAM as possible, and then free any allocated RAM? I hope that someone can help. [Update] I am currently using an Atmel UC3, although I am not sure if that will be the final case. It has 512kB falsh & 128kB RAM. For an INI file, I am talking of max 8 sections, with a total of max 256 entries, each max 8 chars. I chose INI (but am not married to it), because i have had major problems in the past when the format of a data fiel changes, no matter whether binary, or text. For tex, I prefer the free format of INI (on PC), but suppose I could switch to line_1=data_1, line_2=data_2 and accept that if I add new fields in future software erleases they must come at the end, even if it is not pretty when read directly by humans. I suppose if I choose a fixed format text file then I never need get more than one line into RAM at a time ...

• Mountable online storage (no syncing)

  I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

  All, I am using a Pendrive to transfer files from one system to another. I think I deleted some files from the Pendrive that I now need back. Also, there are chances that I might have overwritten the memory where the deleted data might have existed. Is there any software to do something about that? I understand that logically whatever is overwritten in memory cannot to fetched back. But still I need to trust the advances in the technology. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

• How can I strip down Ubuntu?

  I'm trying to fix what I consider a bloated install of Ubuntu. When I install Ubuntu on a machine, I get things that I don't want - web browsers, office applications, media players, accessibility utilities, Ubuntu One, and so on. My goal is to create a way that I can have an install of Ubuntu that contains only the most minimal packages - the administrative tools and package manager, a GUI (my preference would be GNOME), a text editor, core drivers (video cards, network cards - wired and wireless, input devices), and anything else that I have to have to run a stable distribution. From there, I would like to pick and choose which packages I install to create my own customized system. After playing around with other distros like Arch and Slackware, like how they provide a barebones install by default. However, I get trapped in a "configuration hell" - right now, I tried moving away from Ubuntu and to Arch, but after spending 6 hours with it, I still don't have a usable system. It's half configured and I don't have any usable software packages to enable me to work. Is anything that can help me available? Either something like the OpenSUSE builder that lets you choose applications and packages for the CD, an advanced installation mode where I can choose the packages to install and which to ignore, or a guide on how to strip Ubuntu down to its bare bones? And I suppose a natural follow up to this is once I have a stripped down Ubuntu, will this affect updating at all? When Canonical releases the next version of Ubuntu, I don't want any bloatware reinstalled. And yes, most of the applications that come with Ubuntu, I simply don't use. Ever.

• Lenovo B460e laptop Unknown filesystem

  I got a Lenovo B460e laptop yesterday (given by the TN Govt). It has WINDOWS 7 Pro Set it up the way I liked it... all software drivers and all. I wanted extra drives, so I entered the WINDOWS diskadmin and changed my partition setup, by splitting and I did the partition setup in the installing proces, so I split my harddisk into 4 parts. So far so good. When I rebooted, I entered GRUB RESCUE MODE. In this mode I know the only command “ls”. Which gives like (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1). This Lap does not have a CD drive, otherwise I could have formatted the OS and installed a new OS using WINDOWS 7 CD. Now I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Any idea on how to fix this?

• Sharing storage on Linux and Solaris

  I'm looking for a solution in order to share a san mounted volume between several hosts running on Linux (RHEL) and/or Solaris (Sparc). Note that I basically need to share a set of directories containing large binary files that are accessed in random R/W mode. I have the following reqs : keep the data on the SAN suitable i/o performances as the software is pretty demanding on IOPS stick to a shared file system as I can't afford a cluster fs (lack of MDS/OSS infrastructure) compression could be really usefull For now I've found only the following candidates : GFS2 , supports Linux only, no compression VxFS , supports Linux and Solaris, compression supported So if you have some suggestions for this list, I'll really welcome them.
