  Say you're in a contracting developer role at a bank that pays well and will probably be extended. Then you get offered a permanent role at an IT solution provider as a Senior Developer/Technical Lead. Would you stick with the contracting, or go to the permanent role? The contract role: pays well will probably be extended provides finance industry experience is reasonably challenging, although I don't get much ownership over the projects The permanent role: pays less gives me technical lead/team lead experience- involves a range of websites for different clients, and I get to take ownership of projects much more challenging technically, as I have to "earn my stripes" within the team before I'll be given team lead responsibilities. If you were in this situation, would you take the pay-cut and go with the permanent role? Or would you continue contracting, and not feel like you might have missed out on something really good?

• Is there a more efficient way to retrieve tables from websites using wpf + webclient

  new to the community, but here is my first question that I am stuck on. I am new to WPF and WebClient using c# and I am attempting to make a program that access www.nba.com to populate a combobox I have with team names, and then when a user selects a team from the combobox, I wanted to populate a portion of the main window with the roster from the teams home site, same style and eveything. I was able to populate the combobox using the WebClient.OpenRead and reading in the markup to extract the team names. Now I am on the more difficult part. I was planning on using the same method to grab all the markup and then somehow display the table in a content panel, but I feel that this is a very tedious thing to do. Can anyone give me any tips for completing this action or is there a method in the webclient class that allows me to search a webpage for a table or object other than text? Thanks.

• How can programmers get the quiet working environment they need? [closed]

  We have an open plan office with all our programmers, web designers and client service team. Problem is my programmer team has to put up with dance music and wailing guitars all day due to the fact that designers and client services team think this makes the office a better environment. When I turn it off (by blocking the streaming of music on the router, he-he-he) they complain that its so quiet and dull. How do I explain to them that programmers need a calm quiet environment without coming across like a really annoying geek? Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated.

• How to prepare a codebase for compiling on both Windows and Unix-based systems

  Hi! I am wondering about different solutions to easily compile my cross-platform application for both windows and unix. Right now I am using a makefile on Ubuntu, but before my codebase grows larger I'd like to perform the steps necessary to compile it on Windows, and then continue doing so regularly to see that it still works. I'd preferably not contaminate my SVN codebase repository with multiple "makefile" solutions, such as VC++ solutions and so on, I'd like a more automatic way. I tried using mingw with make for windows, but it seems my secondexpansion awesomeness doesn't work on the Windows version (or something like that). It wouldn't compile, and also complained about _winNT or something like that not being defined. How should I prepare my codebase for cross-platform easy compiling? Things like buildtools, perhaps autogenerate VS file from makefile, or something similar. Some preprocessor magic in a stdinc file perhaps? Thanks!

• Know if a Visual Studio Website project is recompiling itself in the background?

  A number of team members update a central ASP.NET dev site (Website project, not a Web application type). Some kinds of changes cause a recompile/rebuild in it. The large website takes a while to recompile and we've noticed it will still seemingly serve out dynamic pages before everything is internally updated. During the site's "gestation" period, our mileage varies while hitting it. Sometimes we get a correct page, sometimes an compilation error page that will eventually be served up without a compilation error, and at other times an unexpected hybrid. Is it possible to query an ASP.NET website application to see if it's currently compiling or rebuilding itself? If so I would write a status page that the team could reference when they're getting weird behaviour, so they would know to wait. Update: Our team often edit files manually on the dev server. For production we'd make pre-compiled pushes. The dev environment is a little more malleable and ever-changing so I'm looking for a solution to reducing the "confusion" there.

Some would prefer a lower level language such as C because it allows the student to learn more about what goes on beyond the abstractions in terms of memory allocation and deallocation and pointers and pointer arithmetic. On the other hand, others would say that they would prefer a higher level language like Java because it allows the student to learn more about the concepts of the structures and the algorithm design rather than 'waste time' and fiddle around with memory segmentation faults and all the blunders that come with languages where memory management is manual. What is your take on this issue? And also, please post any references you may know of that also discuss this argument.

And we are developing a application to evaluate programming assignments of student ( for 1st year student level) I just want to know how to integrate C++ compiler using C# code to compile C++ code. In our case we are loading a student C++ code into text area, then with a click on button we want to compile the code. And if there any compilation errors it will be displayed on text area nearby. (Interface is attached herewith.) And finally it able to execute the code if there aren't any compilation errors. And results will be displayed in console. We were able to do this with a C#(C# code will be loaded to text area intead of C++ code) code using inbuilt compiler. But still not able to do for C# code. Can anyone suggest a method to do this? It is possible to integrate external compiler to VS C# code? If possible how to achieve it? Very grateful if anyone will contributing to solve this matter? There is mutual agreement between the developers and Product Managers that there should be a business case behind every feature the development team builds. My question is, what is an effective way to make a business case for platform-level features that have higher up front cost but will provide long term benefits? For example, the development team would like to implement a plug-in framework. There is the higher up-front cost to implement a plug-in framework but delivering the subsequent features as plug-ins will be cheaper in the long run. This is obvious to everyone including the Product Managers. Is there a standard/simple way to express the cost-benefits? Is there a simple way to visualize it with a graph?

So you can insert a sub-level such as , continue to build the request, and remember to insert a closing tag". I'm interrested for this application. Do you know if this package exists ?   I am working on program that calculate the GPAs for university students in C#. I have made a gridview that contains columns for each subject. Its mark as letter and number. After the user "student" insert his/her subject I want to let the user click a button that will get the mark and the number of the credit hours of each subject. Calculate the GPA for the student and put the result in a textbox. I am having trouble getting started. Any advice for a good place to start?
