Looking for MSSQL Table Design Sanity Check for Profile Tables with Dynamic Columns.

I just want a general sanity check regarding database design. We are building a web system that has both Teachers and Students. Both have accounts in the system. Both have profiles in the system. My question is about the table design of those Profile tables. The Teacher profile is pretty static regarding the metadata associated with it. Each teacher has a set number of fields that exposes information about that individual (schools, degrees, etc). The students, however, are a different case. We are using a windows service to pull varying data about the students from an endless stream of excel spreadsheets. The data gets moved into our database and then the fields appear in association with the student's profile. Accordingly, each and every student may have very different fields in their profile. I originally started with the concept of three tables: Accounts ---------- AccountID TeacherProfiles ---------- TeacherProfileID AccountID SecondarySchool University YearsTeaching Etc... StudentProfiles ---------- StudentProfileID AccountID Header Value The StudentProfiles table would hold the name of the column headers from the excel spreadsheets and the associated values. I have since evolved the design a little to treat Profiles more generically per the attached ERD image. The Teacher and Student "Headers" are stored in a table called "ProfileAttributeTypes" and responses (either from the excel document or via input fields on the web form) are put in a ProfileAttributes table. This way both Student and Teacher profiles can be associated with a dynamic flow of profile fields. The "Permissions" table tells us whether we are dealing with a Student or a Teacher. Since this system is likely to grow quickly, I want to make sure the foundation is solid. Can you please provide feedback about this design and let me know if it seems sound or if you could see problems it might create and, if so, what might be a better approach? Thanks in advance.

How do I use XPath with a default namespace with no prefix?

What is the XPath (in C# API to XDocument.XPathSelectElements(xpath, nsman) if it matters) to query all MyNodes from this document? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <MyNode xmlns="lcmp" attr="true"> <subnode /> </MyNode> </configuration I tried /configuration/MyNode which is wrong because it ignores the namespace. I tried /configuration/lcmp:MyNode which is wrong because lcmp is the URI, not the prefix. I tried /configuration/{lcmp}MyNode which failed because Additional information: '/configuration/{lcmp}MyNode' has an invalid token. EDIT: I can't use mgr.AddNamespace("df", "lcmp"); as some of the answerers have suggested. That requires that the XML parsing program know all the namespaces I plan to use ahead of time. Since this is meant to be applicable to any source file, I don't know which namespaces to manually add prefixes for. It seems like {my uri} is the XPath syntax, but Microsoft didn't bother implementing that... true?

Passing data to a jQuery click() function

Hi I have a simple span like so <span class="action removeAction">Remove</span> This span is within a table, each row has a remove span. And then I call a URL using AJAX when that span is clicked. The AJAX event needs to know the ID of the object for that row? What is the best way of getting that ID into the click function? I thought I could do something like this <span class="action removeAction" id="1">Remove</span> But an ID should not start with a number? Right? Then I thought I could do <span class="action removeAction" id="my1">Remove</span> Then just strip the 'my' part from the ID, but that just seems Yuk! I was looking to write a input helper where I display a Google Map and the user clicks on a location, and I capture that into this column. Make a <div> disappear inside a javascript script

getClientRects javascript method supported on iPhone?

Trying to find the top-most visible element in a UIWebView. I am using a JS method to do this, which works great in Safari, but never executes past the getClientRects method when executed from a UIWebView. The elements I'm interested are all of class="h". Hovering a div shows hidden div - jquery to prototype conversion

I may get killed for this but I have been trying for a few days using Prototype to show a hidden div when hovering over another div. I have this working fine in jquery but I could use some help porting it over to prototype. jQuery toggle div and text

I would like some help with this code, I have read similar questions & answers here on stackoverflow but I still can't get it right. I have a link that populated by .html("") to read more… when clicked it opens the hidden div and at the end the .html("") reads less. firefox does not load large size images

I am stuck with a kind of bug in FF, wherein it’s unable to load images of big size (I have 8 MB size of image) from the server. The loading of image is all fine on IE. I am still looking out for ways to get rid of this problem. I changed server(IIS) settings to allow bigger file sizes. Also, I used “load” event on image using JQuery and tried all sort of options listed here http://api.jquery.com/load-event/, but nothing worked so far. If anyone of you has come across any such similar problem, and a way to resolve it, it would be nice to hear from you Please note: high resolution images are part of the requirement. How do I use jQuery in my Greasemonkey Javascript scripts?

I saw a question here and many blog posts about getting jquery into greasemonkey, but I can't get anything to work. I know the jQuery is good because I can run it from outside of greasemonkey. If instead of a jQuery function is just say alert('hello'); that works fine; I get the alert on page-load.

Chrome + jQuery hide/show inline

Everything works fine but at chrome when i want to show them ,it displays them as display:inline and not as display:inline-block ... The css class button_small have display:inline-block.... Firefox,IE 6+ works ok... Havent tested on safari but i hope that it would be ok... Why chrome kills inline-block? The solution was to put .css("display","inline-block") instead of .show()

Howto open a file and remove the last line?

I am looking to open up a file, grab the last line in the file where the line = "?", which is the closing tag for a php document. Than I am wanting to append data into it and add back in the "?" to the very last line. I've been trying a few approaches, but I'm not having any luck. Here's what I got so far, as I am reading from a zip file. Selective replication with CouchDB

I'm currently evaluating possible solutions to the follwing problem: A set of data entries must be synchonized between multiple clients, where each client may only view (or even know about the existence of) a subset of the data. Each client "owns" some of the elements, and the decision who else can read or modify those elements may only be made by the owner. To complicate this situation even more, each element (and each element revision) must have an unique identifier that is equal for all clients. While the latter sounds like a perfect task for CouchDB (and a document based data model would fit my needs perfectly), I'm not sure if the authentication/authorization subsystem of CouchDB can handle these requirements: While it should be possible to restict write access using validation functions, there doesn't seem to be a way to authorize read access. All solutions I've found for this problem propose to route all CouchDB requests through a proxy (or an application layer) that handles authorization. So, the question is: Is it possible to implement an authorization layer that filters requests to the database so that access is granted only to documents that the requesting client has read access to and still use the replication mechanism of CouchDB? Simplified, this would be some kind of "selective replication" where only some of the documents, and not the whole database is replicated. I would also be thankful for directions to some detailed information about how replication works. The CouchDB wiki and even the "Definite Guide" Book are not too specific about that.

Is SharePoint a good solution for me?

My company has many branches that use the same software suite that we've written for them. We're looking at SharePoint as a way to open a dialog with them about the software - reviews, change requests (not official ones, just for us to get an idea and for them to discuss amongst themselves what would be helpful). We would also like to utilize the document repository feature and possibly the blog. SharePoint is already available to us if we'd like to use it so that's why we're looking into it. I've done a lot of research and watched a lot of starter tutorials. It seems like it has what we're looking for. For those of you that know it well: Do you think it would be a good solution for us? Do you think it would be overkill? If so, Do you have an alternative suggestion? Are there other aspects of SharePoint that I haven't discovered yet that seems like it would be helpful for what we're doing? I will continue to research online but it's always great to hear the opinion of someone experienced with the product. Thanks so much! Pam

Replacing certain words with links to definitions using Javascript

I am trying to create a glossary system which will get a list of common words and their definitions via ajax, then replace any occurrence of that word in certain elements (those with the useGlossary class) with a link to the full definition and provide a short definition on mouse hover. The way I am doing it works, but for large pages it takes 30-40 seconds, during which the page hangs. I would like to either decrease the time it takes to do the replacement or make it so that the replacement is running in the background without hanging the page. I am using jquery for most of the javascript, and Qtip for the mouse hover. Timing issues with playback of the HTML5 Audio API

First I have a link with some data attributes: <a href=# data-stop=1.051 data-start=0.000>And then I was thinking,</a> And finally this bit of jQuery which runs on $(document).ready to hook up a click on the link with the playback: $('a').click(function(ev){ $('a').click(function(ev){ var start = $(this).data('start'), stop = $(this).data('stop'), audio = $('audio').get(0), $audio = $(audio); ev.preventDefault(); audio.playClip(start,stop); }) This approach seems to work, but there's a frustrating bug: sometimes, the playback of a given clip plays beyond the correct data-stop time. I suspect it could have something to do with the timing of the timeupdate event, but I'm no JS guru and I don't know how to begin debugging the problem. Here are a few clues I've gathered: The same behavior appears to come up in both FF and Chrome. The playback of a given clip actually seems to vary a bit -- if I play the same clip a couple times in a row, it may over-play a different amount of time on each playing. Is the problem here the inherent accuracy of the Audio API? My app needs milliseconds. Is there a problem with the way I'm using jQuery to bind and unbind the timeupdate event? I tried using the jQuery-less approach with addEventListener but I couldn't get it to work. Thanks in advance, I would really love to know what's going wrong.

Create a function to a function that runs a for loop?

Hi, I have made some code that creates a red border around an image when the user click on to highlite thats the choesen one. But I want to erase previous or all border with a white border around all images before a new click is made on another image. My question is how do I activate a call to a function when a click is made and how would a function look in jQuery? I just whant to use the .css to change the border in perhaps a loop and change the id of the images? Can I mix common javascript with jQuery, or should it only be pure jQuery code in a script? Clarification/explanation of RegisterClientScriptInclude method

I've been looking on the Internet for a fairly clear explanation of the different methods of registering javascript in an asp.net application. I think I have a basic understating of the difference between registerStartupScript and registerClientScriptBlock (the main difference being where in the form the script is inserted). I'm not sure I understand what the RegisterClientScriptInclude method does or when it is used. From what I can gather, it is used to register an external .js file. Does this then make any and all javascript functions in that file available to the aspx page it was registered on? For example, if it was registered in the onLoad event of a master page, would all pages using that master page be able to use the javascript functions in the .js file? What problems would arise when trying to use document.getElementById in this case, if any? Also, when it is necessary/advantageous to use multiple .js files and register them separately? I appreciate any help you can give. If you know of any really good resources I can use to get a thorough understanding of this concept, I'd appreciate it!

The 2 support functions init() and parseResponse() can be found in the test.js link if you wish to view them, but should not be too relevant to this problem. I've affirmed that this.doAnotherAction() thinks "this" is the XMLHttpResponse object as expected from an instanceof test. Can anyone help with some insight on direction with binding? What's the best practice for handling system-specific information under version control?

I'm new to version control, so I apologize if there is a well-known solution to this. For this problem in particular, I'm using git, but I'm curious about how to deal with this for all version control systems. I'm developing a web application on a development server. I have defined the absolute path name to the web application (not the document root) in two places. On the production server, this path is different. I'm confused about how to deal with this. I could either: Reconfigure the development server to share the same path as the production Edit the two occurrences each time production is updated. I don't like #1 because I'd rather keep the application flexible for any future changes. I don't like #2 because if I start developing on a second development server with a third path, I would have to change this for every commit and update. What is the best way to handle this? I thought of: Using custom keywords and variable expansion (such as setting the property $PATH$ in the version control properties and having it expanded in all the files). Git doesn't support this because it would be a huge performance hit. Using post-update and pre-commit hooks. Possibly the likely solution for git, but every time I looked at the status, it would report the two files as being changed. Not really clean. Pulling the path from a config file outside of version control. Then I would have to have the config file in the same location on all servers. Might as well just have the same path to begin with. Is there an easy way to deal with this? Am I over thinking it?
