  • How do you refactor a large messy codebase?

    I have a big mess of code. Admittedly, I wrote it myself - a year ago. It's not well commented but it's not very complicated either, so I can understand it -- just not well enough to know where to start as far as refactoring it. I violated every rule that I have read about over the past year. There are classes with multiple responsibilities, there are indirect accesses (I forget the technical term - something like foo.bar.doSomething()), and like I said it is not well commented. On top of that, it's the beginnings of a game, so the graphics is coupled with the data, or the places where I tried to decouple graphics and data, I made the data public in order for the graphics to be able to access the data it needs... It's a huge mess! Where do I start? How would you start on something like this? My current approach is to take variables and switch them to private and then refactor the pieces that break, but that doesn't seem to be enough. Please suggest other strategies for wading through this mess and turning it into something clean so that I can continue where I left off!

  • How do you filter a view of a DataTable in .Net 3.5 sp1 using WPF c# and xaml?

    I found the MSDN example code for getting the default view of a collection and adding a filter to the view, but most of it is for .Net 4.0. I'm on a team that is not currently switching to 4.0, so I don't have that option. None of the examples I found used a DataTable as the source, so I had to adapt it a little. I'm using a DataTable because the data is comming from a DB ans it's easy to populate. After trying to implement the MSDN examples, I get a "NotSupportedException" when I try to set the Filter. This is the c# code I have: protected DataTable _data = new DataTable(); protected BindingListCollectionView _filteredDataView; ... private void On_Loaded(Object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { _filteredDataView = (BindingListCollectionView)CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(_data); _filteredDataView.Filter = new Predicate(MatchesCurrentSelections); // throws NotSupportedException } ... public bool MatchesCurrentSelections(object o){...} It seems that either BindingListCollectionView does not support filtering in .Net 3.5, or it just doesn't work for a DataTable. I looked at setting it up in XAML instead of the C# code, but the XAML examples use collections in resources instead of a collection that is a memberof the class, so I have no idea how to set that up. Does any one know how to filter a view to a DataTable?

  • Distributing a bundle of files across an extranet

    I want to be able to distribute bundles of files, about 500 MB per bundle, to all machines on a corporate "extranet" (which is basically a few LANs connected using various private mechanisms, including leased lines and VPN). The total number of hosts is roughly 100, and the goal is to get a copy of the bundle from one host onto all the other hosts reliably, quickly, and efficiently. One important issue is that some hosts are grouped together on single fast LANs in which case the network I/O should be done once from one group to the next and then within each group between all the peers. This is as opposed to a strict central server system where multiple hosts might each fetch the same bundle over a slow link, rather than once via the slow link and then between each other quickly. A new bundle will be produced every few days, and occasionally old bundles will be deleted (but that problem can be solved separately). The machines in question happen to run recent Linuxes, but bonus points will go to solutions which are at least somewhat cross-platform (in which case the bundle might differ per platform but maybe the same mechanism can be used). That's pretty much it. I'm not opposed to writing some code to handle this, but it would be preferable if it were one of bash, Python, Ruby, Lua, C, or C++.

    Hey there again! Today I ran into a problem when I was making a new theme creator for chrome. As you may know, Chrome uses a "new" file format, called CRX, to manage it's plugins and themes. It is a basic zip file, but a bit modified: "Cr24" + derkey + signature + zipFile And here comes the problem. There are only two CRX creators, written in Ruby or Python. I don't know neither language too much (had some basic experience in Python though, but mostly with PyS60), so I would like to ask you to help me convert this python app to a C# class.   • JSF don't find component in view root with the form id

    I have a t:inputFileUpload inside the form, in the html of the display page the id of this component is form:inputFile but when I tried to get the component from the view root using "form:inputFile" the return is null, but when the "form:" is removed the return is the component. The component don't set the value in my managed bean, someone have this problem? EDIT: <h:form id="form" enctype="multipart/form-data"> <t:inputFileUpload id="inputFile" size="40" value="#{managedBean.inputFile}"/> </h:form> In the managed bean: private UploadedFile inputFile; with the gets and sets provided by Eclipse. //This method scans the view root and returns the component with the id passed as parameter findComponentInRoot("form:inputFile"); This returns null, but when I use: //This method scans the view root and returns the component with the id passed as parameter findComponentInRoot("inputFile"); The return is the component I'm looking for, but when I use the View Source in Internet Explorer the id of this component is "form:inputFile". I don't know if this is related, but the component don't set the value in my managed bean and it's strange the fact that the id of the component is different from the HTML source. I'm using JSF 1.2 Mojarra. Someone else has this problem? Or know why this happens?

My problem is in the dynamic / premium part. I am trying to do the following: 1) in the dynamic controller, lookup the username. 2) if the username is in the user list (database), show the Index ActionResult of the Dynamic controller. 3) if the username is not found, look up the username in the premium list 4) if the username is fund in the premium list (database) then show the Index ActionResult of the Preium controller. 5) If all else fails jump to the 404 page (which will ask the user to sign up) Is this possible? Looking up the user twice is a bad idea for performance? How do I do this without redirecting?

    Hello I've been trying several things from Google to POST data to a web server, but none of them work: I'm still stuck at how to convert the variables into the request, considering that the second variable is an SQL query so it has spaces. Does someone know the correct way to use a WebClient to POST data? I'd rather use WebClient because it requires less code than HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse.     Hey all - I'm running SL4 on VS2010. I've got an app that authenticates via a web service to SPROC in my db. Unfortunately this is not WCF/WCF RIA, as I'm inheriting the DB/services from my client. This works perfectly inside of a browser. I'm attempting to move this OOB, and it's at this point that my authentication fails. Here's the steps I took... 1) SL App Properties Enable running app Out of Browser 2) SL App Properties Out of Browser Settings Require elevated trust when running OOB If i set a breakpoint on my logon button click, I see the service call is being made. However, if I step through it (or set a breakpoint on the actual logon web service), the code never gets that far. Here's the block it fails on: public LogonSVC.LogonResponse EndLogon(System.IAsyncResult result) { object[] _args = new object[0]; LogonSVC.LogonResponse _result = ((LogonSVC.LogonResponse)(base.EndInvoke("Logon", _args, result))); return _result; } I know using Elevated Trust means the crossdomain.xml isn't necessary.     I want to test that setting a certain property (or more generally, executing some code) raises a certain event on my object. In that respect my problem is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/248989/unit-testing-that-an-event-is-raised-in-c, but I need a lot of these tests and I hate boilerplate. So I'm looking for a more general solution, using reflection. Ideally, I would like to do something like this: [TestMethod] public void TestWidth() { MyClass myObject = new MyClass(); AssertRaisesEvent(() => { myObject.Width = 42; }, myObject, "WidthChanged"); } For the implementation of the AssertRaisesEvent, I've come this far: private void AssertRaisesEvent(Action action, object obj, string eventName) { EventInfo eventInfo = obj.GetType().GetEvent(eventName); int raisedCount = 0; Action incrementer = () => { ++raisedCount; }; Delegate handler = /* what goes here? */; eventInfo.AddEventHandler(obj, handler); action.Invoke(); eventInfo.RemoveEventHandler(obj, handler); Assert.AreEqual(1, raisedCount); } As you can see, my problem lies in creating a Delegate of the appropriate type for this event. The delegate should do nothing except invoke incrementer. Because of all the syntactic syrup in C#, my notion of how delegates and events really work is a bit hazy. How to do this?

  • LINQ to SQL - How to efficiently do either an AND or an OR search for multiple criteria

    I have an ASP.NET MVC site (which uses Linq To Sql for the ORM) and a situation where a client wants a search facility against a bespoke database whereby they can choose to either do an 'AND' search (all criteria match) or an 'OR' search (any criteria match). The query is quite complex and long and I want to know if there is a simple way I can make it do both without having to have create and maintain two different versions of the query. For instance, the current 'AND' search looks something like this (but this is a much simplified version): private IQueryable<SampleListDto> GetSampleSearchQuery(SamplesCriteria criteria) { var results = from r in Table where (r.Id == criteria.SampleId) && (r.Status.SampleStatusId == criteria.SampleStatusId) && (r.Job.JobNumber.StartsWith(criteria.JobNumber)) && (r.Description.Contains(criteria.Description)) select r; } I could copy this and replace the && with || operators to get the 'OR' version, but feel there must be a better way of achieving this.   • Thread to receive the messages from serial port is not working using c#

    I am using Serial port to receive the messages. The below function is running in a thread. When i debug i find that the thread is running properly. But "if (sp.IsOpen)" is always false, due to which the code is not executing inside the IF condition at all. It says the Port is closed. I will be having multiple serial ports in my system and i will not know, which port will receive the message. So i need to listen to all the ports in one Thread.     I'm currently having an issue where I have a javascript object that is trying to use setInterval to call a private function inside of itself. However, it can't find the object when I try to call it. I have a feeling that it's because window.setInterval is trying to call into the object from outside but doesn't have a reference to the object. FWIW - I can't get it to work with the function being public either. The basic requirement is that I may need to have multiple instances of this object to track multiple uploads that are occurring at once. If you have a better design than the current one or can get the current one working then I'm all ears.   • WriteableBitmap failing badly, pixel array very inaccurate

    I have tried, literally for hours, and I have not been able to budge this problem. I have a UserControl, that is 800x369, and it contains, simply, a path that forms a worldmap. I put this on a landscape page, then I render it into a WriteableBitmap. I then run a conversion to turn the 1d Pixels array into a 2d array of integers. Then, to check the conversion, I wire up the custom control's click command to use the Point.X and Point.Y relative to the custom control in the newly created array. My logic is thus: wb = new WriteableBitmap(worldMap, new TranslateTransform()); wb.Invalidate(); intTest = wb.Pixels.To2DArray(wb.PixelWidth); My conversion logic is as such: public static int[,] To2DArray(this int[] arr,int rowLength) { int[,] output = new int[rowLength, arr.Length / rowLength]; if (arr.Length % rowLength != 0) throw new IndexOutOfRangeException(); for (int i = 0; i < arr.Length; i++) { output[i % rowLength, i / rowLength] = arr[i]; } return output; } Now, when I do the checking, I get completely and utterly strange results: apparently all pixels are either at values of -1 or 0, and these values are completely independent of the original colours. Just for posterity: here's my checking code: private void Check(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { Point click = e.GetPosition(worldMap); ChangeNotification(intTest[(int)click.X,(int)click.Y].ToString()); } The result show absolutely no correlation to the path that the WriteableBitmap has rendered into it. The path has a fill of solid white. What the heck is going on? I've tried for hours with no luck. Please, this is the major problem stopping me from submitting my first WP7 app. Any guidance?

  • C# 4.0 'dynamic' doesn't set ref/out arguments

    I'm experimenting with DynamicObject. One of the things I try to do is setting the values of ref/out arguments, as shown in the code below. However, I am not able to have the values of i and j in Main() set properly (even though they are set correctly in TryInvokeMember()).   • Is there a way to toggle bluetooth and/or wifi on and off programatically in iOS?

    I am looking for an easy way to toggle both bluetooth and wifi between on and off states on iOS 4.x devices (iPhone and iPad). I am constantly toggling these functions as I move between different locations and usage scenarios, and right now it takes multiple taps and visits to the Settings App. I am looking to create a simple App, that lives on Springboard, that I can just tap and it will turn off the wifi if it's on, and vice versa, then immediately quit. Similarly with an App for toggling bluetooth’s state. I have the developer SDK, and am comfortable in Xcode and with iOS development, so am happy to write the required Xcode to create the App. I am just at a loss as to which API, private or not, has the required functionality to simply toggle the state of these facilities. Because this is scratching a very personal itch, I have no intent to try and sell the App or get it up on the App store, so conforming with App guidelines on API usage is a non-issue. What I don’t want to do is jailbreak the devices, as I want to keep the core software as shipped. Can anyone point me at some sample code or more info on achieving this goal, as my Google-fu is letting me down, and if the information is out there for 4.x devices I just can’t find it.

The problem is that when I delete a Package and flush the session, I get a Hibernate error stating that I'm violating a foreign key constraint on table subcontents, with a particular content_id still referenced from table subcontents. I've tried specifically (recursively) deleting the Contents before deleting the Package but I get the same error. Is there a reason why this entity tree is not being deleted properly?
