• How to Map a table with another lookup table using JPA?

  Hi, I have two tables: 1) Application(int appid, int statusid, String appname, String appcity with getter and Setter methods) 2) App_Status(int statusid,String statusDescription with setter and getter methods) I want to map Application table with App_Status so that I don't have to query separately App_Status table in order to get the statusDescription. One thing I have to careful is that no matter what (Insert,update or delete) to the Application table the App_Status table should be unaffected means its a read only table which is maintained by the DBA internally and used only for lookup table. I am using JPA annotations so please suggest how to handle this.

Whats the correct way to do something like this on LINQ? The "helper" object is a custom class storing the user input dates for this example.

  Hi, I'm doing a gridview with an object datasource: List<MyObject> TheSource = a linq query At some point, I have MyGridview.DataSource = TheSource; MyGridview.Databind(); and an OnRowDataBound event handler that's tied to the databinding. In that event handler, how do you make column 2 contain 2 objects from TheSource. For instance, in the TheSource, there is a variable for FirstName and another one for LastName. Column 2 needs to contain both the first and last name in the same cell. Thanks.

• $.get sends prototype functions in request URL?

  I have some prototype functions added to Object which in my opinion were practical in certain scenarios. However, I noticed that when I executed a $.get, the prototype functions are handled as data members and are sent like http://...?prototypefunc=false. This is rather useless as I don't supply these as data members, but they are added to the query string. To be exact, I have this code: Object.prototype.in = function() { for(var i=0; i<arguments.length; i++) if(arguments[i] == this) return true; return false; } $.get('http://localhost/test.php', {'test': 'foo'}, function(text) { }); The corresponding URL constructed is: http://localhost/test.php?test=foo&in=false How can I avoid this?

  We are investigating the Entity Framework to see if it will meet our particular needs. Here is the scenario I am interested in: I have a large table (let's call it VeryWideRecord) which has many columns, and it has a corresponding business object (it's also called VeryWideRecord). I would like to be able to query my database for a VeryWideRecord business object, but only have values for certain columns returned by the underlying SQL. Can I do this with the Entity Framework? I am uncertain as to whether this could be done with the Entity Framework's table splitting feature, because the application needs to be able (at runtime) to change the columns that are requested. The reason for this is that we are trying to minimize the amount of information that is going across the wire. I see how this could be done using NHibernate (example), but how can I do this with the Entity Framework?

• Are self-described / auto-descriptive services loosely or tightly coupled in a SOA architecture ?

  I consider a self-described / auto-descriptive service as a good thing in a SOA architecture, since (almost) everything you know to call the service is present in the service contract (such a WSDL). Sample of a non self-described service for me is Facebook Query Language (FQL http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/FQL), or any web service exchanging XML flow in a one String parameter for then parsing XML and performing treatments. Last ones seem further more technically decoupled, since technically you can switch implementations without technical impact on the caller, handling compatibility between implementations/versions at a business level. On the other side, having no strong interface (diluted into the service and its version), make the service tightly coupled to the existing implementation (more difficulty to interchange the service and to ensure perfect compatibility).   I am using hibernate for Java, and I want to be able to select users by id or by name from the database. Nice thing about Hibernate is that it caches the result by id, but I seem to be unable to make it cache by name. static Session openSession = Factory.openSession(); public static User GetUser(int Id) { return (User) openSession.get(User.class, new Integer(Id)); } public static User GetUser( String Name ){ return (User) openSession.createCriteria( User.class ). add( Restrictions.eq("username", Name) ). uniqueResult(); } If I use GetUser(1) many times, hibernate will only show that it executed the first time. But every time I use GetUser("user1"), hibernate shows that it is executing a new query to database. What would be the best way to have the string identifier be cached also?

  I am probably trying to accomplish too much in a single query, but have I an sqlite database with badly formatted recipes. This returns a sorted list of recipes with relevance added: SELECT *, sum(relevance) FROM ( SELECT *,1 AS relevance FROM recipes WHERE ingredients LIKE '%milk%' UNION ALL SELECT *,1 AS relevance FROM recipes WHERE ingredients LIKE '%flour%' UNION ALL SELECT *,1 AS relevance FROM recipes WHERE ingredients LIKE '%sugar%' ) results GROUP BY recipeID ORDER BY sum(relevance) DESC; But I'm now stuck with a special case where I need to write the relevance value to a field on the same row as the recipe. I figured something along these lines: UPDATE recipes SET relevance=(SELECT sum(relevance) ...) But I have not been able to get this working yet. I will keep trying, but meanwhile please let me know how you would approach this?

Some data: tblSet SetID SetName 1 Red 2 Blue 3 Maroon 4 Yellow 5 Sky tblSetItem SetID ItemID 1 100 1 101 2 100 2 108 2 109 3 100 3 101 4 101 4 108 4 109 4 110 5 100 5 108 5 109 I'd like a way to identify which sets contain the same items. In the example above Red and Maroon contain the same items (100,101) and Blue and Sky contain the same values (100,108,109) Is there a sql query which would provide this answer?

• Is a PHP-only "cache engine" ever worth it?

  I wrote a rather small skeleton for my web apps and thought that I would also add a small cache for it. It is rather simple: If the current page exists as a file in the cache and the file isn't too old, read it out and exit instead of rebuilding the page If the current page isn't cached/outdated recalc the page and save it However, the bad thing about it is: My performance tests with a page that receives 40 relatively long posts via a MySQL query said that with using the cache, it took even longer to handle a single request (1000 tests each) How can that happen? Should I just remove the complete raw-PHP cache and relieve on the availability of some PHP cache like memcached or so?

I have a query: var UserList = this.repository.GetUsers(); return Json(UserList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); This was generating an error: "A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type" This prompted this code which worked fine in L2S: var UserList = this.repository.GetUsers(); foreach (User u in UserList){ u.Subscriptions = null; } return Json(UserList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); How can i stop EF from looking into the Subscriptions table, i just want the Userlist, none of the related properties and the above example does not seem to work for this. In "members" table, i have "id" as the primary key and "username" as a unique field. Now my situation is: When flash want to display a member's profile. My questions: Should Flash pass the member "ID" or "username" to php to process the mysql query? Is there any different passing the "id" or "username"? Which one is more secure? • "Cannot use fixed local inside lambda expression"

  I have an XNA 3.0 project that compiled just fine in VS2008, but that gives compile errors in VS2010 (with XNA 4.0 CTP). The error: Cannot use fixed local 'depthPtr' inside an anonymous method, lambda expression, or query expression depthPtr is a fixed float* into an array, that is used inside a Parallel.For lambda expression from System.Threading. As I said, this compiled and ran just fine on VS2008, but it does not on VS2010, even when targeting .NET 3.5. Has this changed in .NET 4.0, and even so, shouldn't it still compile when I choose .NET 3.5 as the target framework? Searching for the term "Cannot use fixed local" yields exactly one (useless) result, both in Google and Bing. If this has changed, what is the reason for this? I can imagine capturing a fixed pointer-type in a closure could get a bit weird, is that why? So I'm guessing this is bad practice? And before anyone asks: no, the use of pointers is not absolutely critical here. I would still like to know though :)

  Background: I have a short list of strings. The number of strings is not always the same, but are nearly always of the order of a “handful” In our database will store these strings in a 2nd normalised table These strings are never changed once they are written to the database. We wish to be able to match on these strings quickly in a query without the performance hit of doing lots of joins. So I am thinking of storing a hash code of all these strings in the main table and including it in our index, so the joins are only processed by the database when the hash code matches. So how do I get a good hashcode? I could: Xor the hash codes of all the string together Xor with multiply the result after each string (say by 31) Cat all the string together then get the hashcode Some other way So what do people think? (If you care we are using .NET and SqlServer)

  I have created a foreign key (in mssql / tsql) by: alter table company add CountryID varchar(3); alter table company add constraint Company_CountryID_FK foreign key(CountryID) references Country; I then run this query: alter table company drop column CountryID; and I get this error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 4, Line 2 The object 'Company_CountryID_FK' is dependent on column 'CountryID'. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 2 ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN CountryID failed because one or more objects access this column. I have tried this, yet it does not seem to work: alter table company drop foreign key Company_CountryID_FK; alter table company drop column CountryID; What do I need to do to drop the CountryID column?   Hello, I have a database on a SQL Server 2000 server. This database has a table called "Person" that has a field call "FullName" that is a VARCHAR(100). I am trying to write a query that will allow me to get all records that have a name. Records that do not have a name have a FullName value of either null or an empty string. How do I get all of the Person records have a FullName? In other words, I want to ignore the records that do not have a FullName. • Adding Controls Programatically

  I have a page I need to build out where depending on the selection the user made on a form on the page prior it displays a different set of questions for them to answer. So say the user selects Reason A from the form on page edit, then it needs to display Questions 1 and 2 on page edit_confirmation. But if they select Reason B then it needs to display Questions 3 and 4. I'm grabbing the reason code from the query string and have a switch statement set up, but I can't find anywhere how to output different controls. If Questions 1 and 2 are supposed to show up, one could be a text box and the other a checkbox, but if questions 3 and 4 are supposed to show up one may need to be a dropdown list and a checkbox.

Model calls method on view which has the logic to refresh UI Questions around these: Q1) Can controller also modify View or Model only updates View? Q2) When screen loads for the first time, there is no Model change. Then, who fetches data from model and populates view? View directly calls Model and populates itself OR controller gets data and passes to view method OR some dummy event is raised at Model which updates View?

  Hi, how can I search for geo-objects in a certain perimeter ? E.g. I have several objects with Lat/Lon coordinates stored in my DB. Now I want to retrieve all the objects which lie in a specific perimeter (10 miles or 20 miles) around a given point. I guess what I would have to do is to form some query like: SELECT * FROM objects o where o.lat < (myPositionLat+x) AND o.lon < (myPositionLon+y) Is this right? How do I determine/set the values for x and y?
