• USB ports not recognizing devices (vista)

  I'm trying to fix a problem on a Vista machine where all the USB ports seem to have power but they don't recognize devices plugged into them. It seemed to start after I plugged my mp3 player (sansa clip) into it and disconnect it. So it sounds similar to this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900 but that was for XP. And I did try all the fixes (including the registry entry) but they did not help. It also sounds similar to this SU question 50110 but I don't think it is the mother board. I have see other places that suggest reinstalling the OS...but that seems like a last resort type of thing. I have also seen a suggestion of doing a system restore but not sure if that will help. Any ideas of what I can try?

• How to remove "com.starfield.backupservice" from launchd?

  I remember sometime ago, I uninstall an application called starfield, but probably I didn't do a clean uninstall. Now in Console, I always see a annoying message: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4441]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4442]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Starfield/BackupService/offSyncService", ...): No such file or directory I know it could be something wrong with my installation, how can I do a clean uninstall now, or just fix this issue, I don't want to see this message from my console any more. • Bash - Program is writing directly to terminal

  Valve's dedicated server for the Source Engine (srcds_run) on Linux writes directly to the terminal, not stdout. I want to run it as an /etc/init.d daemon on Debian 6, and I'd like to redirect/capture the output to a file. How can I do that? And better yet, why would they output directly to the terminal, is there any benefit in doing that? I suppose I could start another bash instance just for srcds_run, but that seems like a dirty solution, and I still don't know how to redirect the output.

• PCMCIA preventing laptop from booting up

  My friend has brought his dead laptop over. It is a Sony Vaio with Windows Vista. When booting up, it blue screens and reboots. I have tried to boot up with Knoppix and this will freeze when starting up PCMCIA. If I start Knoppix with knoppix nopcmcia it disables pcmcia and boots up fine. So I presume there is a problem with the PCMCIA controller on the laptop. My friend does not use any PCMCIA cards, so doesnt really need it. Is there anyway I can similarly disable PCMCIA so that Windows will boot up fine?

  Will be starting a small graphics design firm soon, with 20 employees. Therefore need software to manage the network. Have bought a bulk license of Windows 7. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III). If required I would purchase an extra machine, but would like to avoid unnecessary costs at start up. • PostgreSQL didn't install on Ubuntu 11.04

  On a new copy of Ubuntu 11.04 server I am trying to install PostgreSQL server by apt-get install postgresql. But in the end of installation log I saw: Error: could not create default cluster. • How to Approach CentOS Back Up on GoDaddy Dedicated Hosting

  Does anyone have any experience with backing up a dedicated server at GoDaddy or anywhere else? I have a CentOS system. I recently made a big newbie mistake working on linux and toasted my server. I had to start over from scratch b/c I damaged it so bad. GoDaddy says I need to handle it all myself b/c I am not paying them for back ups. Does anyone have any idea on how to approach this back up? I'm not sure how a backup on dedicated hosting would be different than a normal linux back up. In any case, I don't know how to do normal linux backups.

• Xencenter guest will not boot

  I have xen server free edition. Today one of the guest VM was very loaded and I decided to reboot it. Now it can not start. It is with Ubuntu 10.04 Server. The machine is shown as running in xsconsole and in windows Xen control center. It shows 100 % CPU and 100 % RAM usage. The console shows nothing (it doesn't show boot process). And the worst is that I have no backup. Is there any advice how to see what is going on. I exported it to file and now I am trying it to import it into another server, because I can't reboot the physical server it runs on. Can this save me (the reboot of the server) Thank you

• After installing Apache, PHP and MySQL I can't add extension to php.ini without Apache error

  I have Windows XP OS. Installed Apache 2.2.14, then PHP 5.2.12 (tested with phpinfo.php - IT'S WORKS!) Then I installed MySQL 5.1. And now, when I add extension = php_mysql.dll to php.ini and restart server, Apache tells me that he can't start (small window with "The requested operation has failed"). Even if I add only extension = *smth*.dll --- the same thing. Apache just don't love my extensions. How to prove him, that they are cool and stuff? Thanks.

• Deal Slider malware removed, Windows Script Host Error message persisting

  I somehow got "Deal Slider" which was detected by Malwarebytes, so I let the program delete it. Now, every time I start my computer, I get the message from Windows Script Host that says: Can not find script file "C:\Users\Jason\Appdata\Local\Deal Slider\repair.js". Beep boop beep. This is a very odd message, because I can't find any trace of Deal Slider on my system now, and the \Deal Slider\ directory doesn't even exist anymore. I have already tried disabling WSH, but then I get a message that WSH is disabled. I also tried changing the file association of .js and .jse to Notepad. How can I make this error stop happening?

• How many cron jobs are too many?

  I have a couple of cron jobs for basic maintenance which aren't very resource-intensive. I also have custom task scheduling (which is just calling a .php file and passing information via GET, ie: cronjob.php?param1=param ...). These can add up pretty quickly. These just call system commands and run external programs (Nmap is one of them). They usually don't take long either. Anyway, can anyone tell me, roughly what point is too many? I know it's hard to say since it depends on what job is being run and how often, but at what point does the crontab program start "struggling"? Anyone have any idea? Thanks.

• Windows Fax Server Leaves Documents in "Pending" Status

  We are having an issue with Windows Fax Server on Windows Server 2008. Occasionally, the server will get into a state where after adding jobs to the outbox, they will simply remain at the pending status (without any attempt to send them). There is nothing in the event log mentioning a problem. It typically seems to enter the state after restarting the server or after no faxes have been sent for a while. The way to fix the issue has been to: Stop the Fax service Go into the modem properties in device manager and query modem Start the Fax service - at which point all the pending faxes in the outbox will send.

  Hi, I installed CentOs on VMware Player 3.0.1 running on windows XP. When trying to configure it to connect to the internet in a bridged configuration, I get an error message when trying to bring up the network interface: [root@VMLinux ~]# /et/init.d/network start Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth0: Determining IP information for eth0... failed [FAILED] VM is running on a machine that has access to the network, I tried it on two different networks that have DHCP enabled. Everything works fine when using a NAT connection through my host. How can I make the bridge work for me? Thanks.

• How do I expose a webapp on :8090, even though firewall allows only :80 and :22

  I am a noob in Server related stuff, so bear me. I use amazon webservices (EC2) on which I have a webapp running on jetty, which runs on port 8090. I deploy the webapp through the usual method of java -jar start.jar So then to access the app, I have to add a port in the URL, like this: someIP:8090/app But just typing someIP in the browser takes me to a page that shows It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. which I assume is apache. I have apache, tomcat and jetty installed. What can I do so that I dont have to specify the port? Do I have to perform port-forwarding? Thanks a lot.

• Unique Features of bash compared to zsh

  I have been a zsh user for quite some time (before that tcsh and before that csh). I am quite happy with it, but was wondering if there are any compelling features of bash that do not exist in zsh. And conversely, are there zsh features which do not exist in bash. My current feel is that bash is better: If you are familiar with it already and don't want to learn new syntax. It is going to exist on most all *nix machines by default, whereas zsh may be an extra install. Not trying to start a religious battle here, which is why I'm just looking for features which exist in only one of the shells.

• Windows shuts down unexpectedly when waking up from sleep

  I've been facing this issue since yesterday, whenever I put the computer into sleep mode and when I wake up, it takes me to boot menu with choices; start Windows normally, safe mode, etc. in short, it shuts down unexpectedly while waking up. I have my laptop dual booted with up-to-date Windows 7 SP1 (32-bit) and Ubuntu 10.10. This problem is not happening with Ubuntu. I googled the issue and went through this, this and this page. But, none of the threads were helpful to solve it. I've found that there's something to do with device drivers. What can be done to resolve the issue? Can SFC utility solve it if it is due to corrupt system files?

Needs to be open-source or have a license level that grants access to source, and needs to be ASP.net (C# preferred, but could live with VB.net) Ultimately, we'll need to be able to assign facilities and instructors, manage attendees, send notifications, and build calendar views. We'll also be integrating with our website to allow on-line sign-up and other things for attendees to manage on their own. We do expect to implement quite a bit of it in-house, but we'd like as broad of a base to start from as we can get. Still, just a really good web-based meeting-room reservation system might make a good enough starting point.   I'm trying to pick an IP telephony technology to learn. I heard of Asterisk, trixbox, freePBX, and my head was already spinning being not sure what to learn. Then I came across this article listing some more like Kamailio, Yate, CallWeaver, FreeSWITCH, SipXecs and now my head REALLY is spinning http://www.cio.com.au/article/323016/five_open_source_ip_telephony_projects_watch . Can someone give me a run down of how all these technologies tie together? What is the trend now, because I'd like to start learning. • MySQL replication ignore data changes but not table structure changes

  Is there a way to setup MySQL replication so that CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE statements get replicated but INSERT, DELETE and UPDATE statements do not? I've got replication working fine and have several tables that are ignored as per the requirements. But we have a requirement that the slaves have an empty copy of the ignored table. We create those empty copies before we start replicating. Since the table is ignored, table structure changes don't get passed down from the master to the slave's empty copy. I know it's a strange requirement.

• XSP2 hangs after some time

  I'm running a REST/JSON webservice (SVC) using xsp2 (and xsp2 through Apache/mod_mono). After some hours, the service just hangs and outputs a timeout after about 5 minutes. This can only be solved by restarting xsp2. Sometimes multiple restarts are needed to get it running again. I've made a small sample webservice simply returning a "pong". The example is available in the bug report: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=608158 The bug can sometimes be reproduced following these steps: Steps to Reproduce: 1. start xsp2 (webservice) 2. request http://[server]/WSPing.svc/ping Actual Results: After some time, I always get timeouts. Is fsarchiver correct tool for this job? What's wrong? I'm on Ubuntu 9.1 with fsarchiver 0.6.8 and lvm tools installed. Thanks.

  Every time I initiate an ssh connection from my Mac to a Linux (Debian) I do get this warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding. This also happens for tools that are using ssh, like git or mercurial. I just want to make a local change to my system in order to prevent this from appearing. Note: I do have X11 server (XQuartz 2.7.3 (xorg-server 1.12.4)) on my Mac OS X (10.8.1) and it is working properly, I can successfully start clock locally or remotely.

• How to automatically save sessions with multiple windows in FireFox

  I've used primarily FF's built-in session management until recently. Now my needs have become more sophisticated. What I want is to be able to have two windows, one with a fixed set of tabs (approximately 5) and the other with "automatic save". That is, when I start FF, I want 1 window to open with my 5 tabs, and another to open with whatever I had when I shut down FF. I've installed "Session Manager", but I can't seem to get it to do what I want. It will save one window, but when I close one window, it removes that one from the session. Any suggestions to do this with either Session Manager or another plugin would be great.

• Virtual Box Networking; How to configure bridged networking on Windows 7

  I have VirtualBox on Windows 7. I have two virtual machines running RHEL, that work fine when the network is set to NAT. However I want to change the network adapters for the VM's to bridged in stead of NAT. However when I go in to the VM configuration, and select bridged I also need to select an adapter, but there is nothing to select. Apparently I need to install a separate driver/filter on the network adapter. However I don't know where to start. I reinstalled VirtualBox (latest version) but did not see an option to install such driver. What should I do?
