• Most supported/easiest to get started gamedev language?

  In what language are the most libraries/frameworks (like lwjgl for Java, XNA for C#)? What language is the easiest to start making a game (very easy to get a 3D-environment rendered)? What language has the friendliest learning curve? Say I want to make a game and I don't know any programming languages, I want to develop for any platform(so don't give the answer "the one you know best/the platform you are working on"), then what is the best language to start with. I get this question a lot "I have this and that ideas for a game and want to make it, what language should I use"(mostly asked by beginning programmers), but I don't know how to answer that. The answer "use the one you are most familiar with", because sometimes they don't even know a language yet... I am not asking for someone's personal opinion, but an objective list of what languages are the easiest/most supported/have the most/best libraries/frameworks to get started with gamedevelopment.

  Hi, I know some people have asked about getting back into programming after a break and this is a potential duplicate. I just am in a position where I can go back to school for a graduate degree in Stat/Applied Math. But I'm very worried about the impact it will have on my career and ability to find a job afterwards. I have 3 years experience in .NET on top of a couple of years in PHP. Right now, I'm a senior software engineer. Do you think taking two years off to do math is going to dramatically hurt my marketability?

  Possible Duplicate: Good resources to understand how a program interacts with machine hardware I don't know if this is the correct StackExchange site to ask this question. But I could not find any other. I want to understand how a computer works from the software level to the internal structure. For example what happens when I press a button on keyboard. The OS interprets it and then what changes happen in the flip-flops. How is an operating system written? If it is written using some programming language, then how is that interpreter written. At some point it has to come down to the hardware, right? I know to program in c, c++ and java. But after all these years I am still not sure about what is happening inside. I would be grateful to anyone who points me to to a link or a video that explains this to the deep.

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects?

  I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

  Should you demand twice as much money if the job's asking for two different sets of skills such as graphic design and computer programming? Sure you won't be doing 16 hours of work a day, but we all know that so much of the time is spent on communication between designers and developers, and if the designer and the developer is the same person, it would take way less time, and hence I think the pay should be doubled. If not double, how much more should you ask for? How much are employers usually willing to pay for such a polymath position? If you are hiring, would you prefer one polymath person or two specialists at the same cost?

• Advice: should I focus on PHP + MySQL, or split my time for more JS and CSS? [closed]

  I started learning web development about three months ago (in between working my regular job), and I'm finally starting to get some vague, distant notion of understanding. I find the server-side stuff the most interesting; though I've not gone anywhere near Apache quite yet, which I assume will be necessary at some point. As cool as toying around with visuals and UI is, programming and database stuff inspires me with new ideas and possibilities every minute (I've even bought, on a whim, a wonderfully dry bunch of books on database theory and relational algebra). And whatever CSS or Javascript tutorial I'm doing, it often feels like a distraction from the PHP/MySQL stuff I'd rather be playing with. For someone like me who's just starting out, which is the most advisable course of action? (in terms of being marketable as a programmer): To focus on PHP and SQL stuff exclusively, and only once I master those to diversify my skills. To first learn all three (PHP/MySQL, Javascript, CSS and design) and only once I'm fluent in all three focus on PHP and databases?

And now think I should jump ship again, back to being a programmer. Of course the natural course of action where I can spend say two whole years learning to code, might not be available any more. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? • "Unclutter" units in RTS game

  For intentional reasons, certain units in the game I'm currently programming don't have any collision detection and response among each other. This enables them to clutter right on top of each other. This is a wanted behavior, since there will be situations in the game when the player does want them to stack like that. However, I want to make the process of uncluttering them easy for the player, so that they just have to press a hotkey or click some button on the screen and have the units disperse just enough so it's easy to select a group of them with the mouse (if they stand on top of each other one mouseclick selects all units). How could I do this without running a brute force N^2 nearest neighbor search on all units?

  So what I wanted to do. comperes(7zip) and split 600MB folder into 199MB parts but sadly when I tried to do this task with archive manager it gave me an error, but I know that if I use terminal it will work. I looked this up in askubuntu and found out about this commend 7z a -v5m -mx0 ubuntu.7z I understand that v5m will split it to 5 mb parts and -mx0 means that it will not comperes it but I want it to comperes so what should I write instead of this -mx0 pleas note: I am using .7zip because I most probably will use this file on windows pc thank you in advanced

• Adapting Javascript game for mobile

  I'm currently developing a Javascript web game for desktop users. It is a sort of tower-defense game that relies on mouse input only, developed on canvas using EaselJS. In the future, or perhaps simultaneously, I would like to adapt the game for mobile devices. I can see at least 3 potential areas in shifting from desktop to mobile: 1. resolution size and UI rearrangement, 2. converting mouse events to touch events, 3. distribution as native app wrapper or mobile Web. What would be the best strategy to facilitate this desktop to mobile conversion? For example, should I try to code the game for both platforms, or port the game UI over to mobile by branching the code base. Should I just publish on the mobile Web or wrap the game in a native app framework? And if I were to code for both platforms using the same codebase, should I register both click and touch events, or remap click events to touch using dispatchEvent?

  We need to generate a release in 3 weeks, and for the planning we are doing today we don't have coherent logical user stories from the backlog tasks. Is valid to match say each development task is equivalent to an user story? Methodologically what is the correct way of handling this?, because anyway we are going to have standup meetings and we are going to control the progress of the project against those development tasks.   I was searching in the past (past few weeks) for a program/software which is multithreaded and it is able to extract rarparts using multi threading. What software's i've already tried? unrar, unrar-nonfree, rar, 7zip It seemed to me that none of them is multi threaded and therefore they are all slow. The solution would be needed in cli format so if not necessary the no gui. Is someone aware of something like this?   I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs?   I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

  I would like to know why you decided to build your own framework in your company. By framework, I don't mean few libraries you use often. I mean a specific way of building applications on top of it, with base classes, convention, etc. So why did you built your own framework? How could you justify that to the person that employs you. Have you measure the positive and negative impact of it? Regarding your experiences, did you notice that in some case a company framework produced real benefits, or on the other hand, increased costs of development (learning curve, debugging, maintenance, ...)?
