• WF performance with new 20,000 persisted workflow instances each month

  Windows Workflow Foundation has a problem that is slow when doing WF instances persistace. I'm planning to do a project whose bussiness layer will be based on WF exposed WCF services. The project will have 20,000 new workflow instances created each month, each instance could take up to 2 months to finish. What I was lead to belive that given WF slownes when doing peristance my given problem would be unattainable given performance reasons. I have the following questions: Is this true? Will my performance be crap with that load(given WF persitance speed limitations) How can I solve the problem? We currently have two possible solutions: 1. Each new buisiness process request(e.g. Give me a new drivers license) will be a new WF instance, and the number of persistance operations will be limited by forwarding all status request operations to saved state values in a separate database. 2. Have only a small amount of Workflow Instances up at any give time, without any persistance ofso ever(only in case of system crashes etc.), by breaking each workflow stap in to a separate worklof and that workflow handling each business process request instance in the system that is at that current step(e.g. I'm submitting my driver license reques form, which is step one... we have 100 cases of that, and my step one workflow will handle every case simultaneusly).   I need a function that will correctly parse NVP into PHP array. I have been using code provided by paypal but it did not work for when string length was specified next to the name.   I'm just starting to learn T-SQL and could use some help in understanding what's going on in a particular block of code. The T-SQL code does exactly what I want, which is to make a single result based on the results of a query, which will then be used in another query. However, I can't figure out how the SELECT @column_list =... statement is putting multiple values into a single string of characters by being inside a SELECT statement. Without the assignment to @column_list, the SELECT statement would simply return multiple rows. How is it that by having the variable within the SELECT statement that the results get "flattened" down into one value? How should I read this T-SQL to properly understand what's going on?

• Defining a variable in a class and using it in functions

  I am trying to learn PHP classes so I can begin coding more OOP projects. To help me learn I am building a class that uses the Rapidshare API. • Idiomatic Scala way to deal with base vs derived class field names?

  Consider the following base and derived classes in Scala: abstract class Base( val x : String ) final class Derived( x : String ) extends Base( "Base's " + x ) { override def toString = x } Here, the identifier 'x' of the Derived class parameter overrides the field of the Base class, so invoking toString like this: println( new Derived( "string" ).toString ) returns the Derived value and gives the result "string". So a reference to the 'x' parameter prompts the compiler to automatically generate a field on Derived, which is served up in the call to toString. This is very convenient usually, but leads to a replication of the field (I'm now storing the field on both Base and Derived), which may be undesirable. To avoid this replication, I can rename the Derived class parameter from 'x' to something else, like '_x': abstract class Base( val x : String ) final class Derived( _x : String ) extends Base( "Base's " + _x ) { override def toString = x } Now a call to toString returns "Base's string", which is what I want. Unfortunately, the code now looks somewhat ugly, and using named parameters to initialize the class also becomes less elegant: new Derived( _x = "string" ) There is also a risk of forgetting to give the derived classes' initialization parameters different names and inadvertently referring to the wrong field (undesirable since the Base class might actually hold a different value). Is there a better way? Edit: To clarify, I really only want the Base values; the Derived ones just seem necessary for initializing the Base ones. The example only references them to illustrate the ensuing issues. It might be nice to have a way to suppress automatic field generation if the derived class would otherwise end up hiding a base class field.

• Linux 2.6.31 Scheduler and Multithreaded Jobs

  I run massively parallel scientific computing jobs on a shared Linux computer with 24 cores. Most of the time my jobs are capable of scaling to 24 cores when nothing else is running on this computer. However, it seems like when even one single-threaded job that isn't mine is running, my 24-thread jobs (which I set for high nice values) only manage to get ~1800% CPU (using Linux notation). Meanwhile, about 500% of the CPU cycles (again, using Linux notation) are idle. Can anyone explain this behavior and what I can do about it to get all of the 23 cores that aren't being used by someone else? Notes: In case it's relevant, I have observed this on slightly different kernel versions, though I can't remember which off the top of my head. The CPU architecture is x64. Is it at all possible that the fact that my 24-core jobs are 32-bit and the other jobs I'm competing w/ are 64-bit is relevant? Edit: One thing I just noticed is that going up to 30 threads seems to alleviate the problem to some degree. It gets me up to ~2100% CPU.

Upon another click of an element I need it to move back to the top, but still remain in the center. My goal is to calulate the center of the page in pixels (width = (width / 2) - 700;), and then animate to this rough position (it's normally out by a few pixels due to scrollbars, and then force to the center using a .css() call. The problem is that IE does not want to play ball. IE will not animate at all. Firefox/Safari/Chrome all work as expected.   Hi, I am new to jQuery and would like to know how is it possible for me to hide an option in a selection box based on the selection of another selection box. I have 5 selection boxes, this is for the administrator to select the users of a limited criteria. The <options> are create dynamically from the results of a database query and php, and they all have the same <options>. e.g. this is an example of the selection boxes with their option values. userbox1 - Amy, Bosh, Cathy, Daniel, Ethan userbox2 - Amy, Bosh, Cathy, Daniel, Ethan userbox3 - Amy, Bosh, Cathy, Daniel, Ethan userbox4 - Amy, Bosh, Cathy, Daniel, Ethan userbox5 - Amy, Bosh, Cathy, Daniel, Ethan So if the administrator selects Cathy in userbox1, Cathy will be automatically be hidden from the selection on the rest of the userbox. And if the administrator changes his/her mind and reselect another user call Ethan. The userboxes should be able to show the availability of Cathy in the selection. I am not sure is hide/show the correct status to be used in such cases. May I know how is it possible to write the function as stated above? The pop method should basically take the last value and place it on 0. Then calls up the next stack and place the following on 0 (like shown above in stack2). The current pop method that keeps track of the top index (0 elements = 0 top, 1 element = 1 top etc..). Already includes a underflow warning if this goes on 0 or below (which is correct). public int Pop() { if(top <= 0) { throw new Exception("Stack underflow..."); } else { for (int j = tabel.Length - 1; j >= 0; j--) { //...Really not sure what to do here. } } return number; }/*Pop*/ Since in the other class I already have a loop (for loop shown above) that simulates 6 times the s2 stack. • Reading CSV files in numpy where delimiter is ","

  Hello all, I've got a CSV file with a format that looks like this: "FieldName1", "FieldName2", "FieldName3", "FieldName4" "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008", "7.59484916392", "10", "6.552373" "04/13/2010 14:45:22.010", "6.55478493312", "9", "3.5378543" ... Note that there are double quote characters at the start and end of each line in the CSV file, and the "," string is used to delimit fields within each line. When I try to read this into numpy via: import numpy as np data = np.genfromtxt(csvfile, dtype=None, delimiter=',', names=True) all the data gets read in as string values, surrounded by double-quote characters. Not unreasonable, but not much use to me as I then have to go back and convert every column to its correct type When I use delimiter='","' instead, everything works as I'd like, except for the 1st and last fields. As the start of line and end of line characters are a single double-quote character, this isn't seen as a valid delimiter for the 1st and last fields, so they get read in as e.g. "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008 and 6.552373" - note the leading and trailing double-quote characters respectively. Because of these redundant characters, numpy assumes the 1st and last fields are both String types; I don't want that to be the case Is there a way of instructing numpy to read in files formatted in this fashion as I'd like, without having to go back and "fix" the structure of the numpy array after the initial read?

Now some of the examples I found says we should do something like if (!$this->getUrls()->contains($url)) { // add url } but this doesn't work as this compares the element values. As the $url doesn't have id value yet, this will always fail and $url will be dublicated. So I'd really appreciate if someone could explain how I can add an element to the ArrayCollection without persisting it and avoiding the duplication? Edit I have managed to achive this via $p = function ($key, $element) use ($url) { if ($element->getUrlHash() == $url->getUrlHash()) { return true; } else { return false; } }; But doesn't this still load all urls and then performs the check? I don't think this is efficient as there might be thousands of urls per user.

  I am able to successfully get the SID (SessionID) for my Google Reader account. In order to obtain the feed and do other operations inside Google Reader, you have to obtain an authorization token. I'm having trouble doing this.   I'm attempting to use the AJAX Control Toolkit's Rating control in a DataBinding scenario. I have a ReuseRating column in my database that is a tinyint. It can hold values 1 through 5. Every record in the table has the value set to 1 currently. If I do this in my ItemTemplate everything works fine. • Issue with CAAnimation and CALayer Transforms

  I have a CALayer that I want to animate across the screen. I have created two methods: one slide open the layer and one to slide close. These both work by assigning a property to the layer's transform property. Now I want to use a CAKeyFrameAnimation to slide open the layer. I got this working so the layer slides open, but now I can't slide the layer close using my old method. I am trying to figure out why this is. Any help would be great. How am I supposed to get away with this? Their position in the state space is given by an IPosition. Each state then has one (or more) values IValue. I am simplifying the hierarchy, as it's a bit more complex than described. The idea of having this hierarchy defined with generics is to allow for different implementations of the same concepts (an IStateSpace will be implemented both as a matrix as an graph, etc). Would can I get away with this? How do you generally solve this kind of problems? Which kind of designs are used in these cases? Thanks

• iPhone accelerometer:didAccelerate: seems to not get called while I am running a loop

  An accelerometer related question. (Sorry the formatting may not look right, its the first time I am using this site). I got the accelerometer working as expected using the standard code UIAccelerometer *accel = [UIAccelerometer sharedAccelerometer]; accel.delegate = self; accel.updateInterval = 0.1; //I also tried other update values I use NSLog to log every time the accelerometer:didAccelerate: method in my class is called. The function gets called as expected and everything works fine till here. However, when I run a loop, the above method doesn't seem to get called. Something like this float firstAccelValue = globalAccel; //this is the x-accel value (stored in a global by the above method) float nextAccelValue = firstAccelValue; while (nextAccelValue == firstAccelValue){ //do something nextAccelValue = globalAccel; // note globalAccel is updated by the accelerometer method } The above loop never exits, expectedly since the accelerometer:didAccelerate: method is not getting called, and hence globalAccel never changes value. If I use a fixed condition to break the while loop, I can see that after the loop ends, the method calls work fine again. Am I missing something obvious here? Or does the accelerometer method not fire when certain processing is being done? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  Hey guys, I was working on game, and wanted to highlight a spot on the screen when something happens, I created a class to do this for me, and found a bit of code to draw the rectangle static private Texture2D CreateRectangle(int width, int height, Color colori) { Texture2D rectangleTexture = new Texture2D(game.GraphicsDevice, width, height, 1, TextureUsage.None, SurfaceFormat.Color);// create the rectangle texture, ,but it will have no color! lets fix that Color[] color = new Color[width * height];//set the color to the amount of pixels in the textures for (int i = 0; i < color.Length; i++)//loop through all the colors setting them to whatever values we want { color[i] = colori; } rectangleTexture.SetData(color);//set the color data on the texture return rectangleTexture;//return the texture } Problem is that the code above is called every update, (60 times a second), and it was not written with optimization in mind, I have no clue how else to write a code to do this though. It needs to be extremely fast (the code above freezes the game, which has only skeleton code right now).. Any suggestions. Note: Any new code would be great (WireFrame/Fill are both fine). • How to debug anomalous C memory/stack problems

  Hello, Sorry I can't be specific with code, but the problems I am seeing are anomalous. Character string values seem to be getting changed depending on other, unrelated code. For example, the value of the argument that is passed around below will change merely depending on if I comment out one or two of the fprintf() calls! By the last fprintf() the value is typically completely empty (and no, I have checked to make sure I am not modifying the argument directly... all I have to do is comment out a fprintf() or add another fprintf() and the value of the string will change at certain points!): static process_args(char *arg) { /* debug */ fprintf(stderr, "Function arg is %s\n", arg); ...do a bunch of stuff including call another function that uses alloc()... /* debug */ fprintf(stderr, "Function arg is now %s\n", arg); } int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { char *my_arg; ... do a bunch of stuff ... /* just to show you it's nothing to do with the argv array */ my_string = strdup(argv[1]); /* debug */ fprintf(stderr, "Argument 1 is %s\n", my_string); process_args(my_string); } There's more code all around, so I can't ask for someone to debug my program -- what I want to know is HOW can I debug why character strings like this are getting their memory changed or overwritten based on unrelated code. Is my memory limited? My stack too small? How do I tell? What else can I do to track down the issue? My program isn't huge, it's like a thousand lines of code give or take and a couple dynamically linked external libs, but nothing out of the ordinary. HELP! TIA!

How do you feel about using these constant values in a concrete repository like a database? Is it ok? Or should I substitute them with meaningful data in the database. • Find and Replace RegEx with wildcard search and addition of value

  The below code is from my other questions that I have asked here on SO. Everyone has been so helpful and I almost have a grasp with regards to RegEx but I ran into another hurdle. This is what I basically need to do in a nutshell. I need to take this line that is in a text file that I load into my content variable: X17.8Y-1.Z0.1G0H1E1 I need to do a wildcard search for the X value, Y value, Z value, and H value. When I am done, I need this written back to my text file (I know how to create the text file so that is not the problem). X17.8Y-1.G54G0T2 G43Z0.1H1M08 I have code that the kind users here have given me, except I need to create the T value at the end of the first line, and use the value from the H and increment it by 1 for the T value. For example: X17.8Y-1.Z0.1G0H5E1 would translate as: X17.8Y-1.G54G0T6 G43Z0.1H5M08 The T value is 6 because the H value is 5. I have code that does everything (does two RegEx functions and separates the line of code into two new lines and adds some new G values). But I don't know how to add the T value back into the first line and increment it by 1 of the H value. Can someone please modify my RegEx statement so I can do this automatically? I tried to combine my two RegEx statements into one line but I failed miserably.

• WatiN NativeElement.GetElementBounds() - What is the unit of measurement?

  When I'm testing with WatiN, I like to save screenshots. Sometimes I don't really need a picture of the whole browser window though - I just want a picture of the element that I'm testing. My attempt to save a picture of an element with the code below resulted in a picture of a block box, because elementBounds.Top points to a pixel position way past the bottom of the screen. The elementBounds.Width and .Height values also appear to be about half what they should be.
