• Building a Data Warehouse

  I've seen tutorials articles and posts on how to build datawarehouses with star and snowflakes schemas, denormalization of OLTP databases fact and dimension tables and so on. Also seen comments like: Star schemas are for datamarts, at best. There is absolutely no way a true enterprise data warehouse could be represented in a star schema, or snowflake either. I want to create a database that will server for reporting services and maybe (if that isn't enough) install analisys services and extract reports and data from cubes. My question was : Is it really necesarry to redesign my current database and follow the star/snowflake schemas with fact and dimension tables ? Thank you

• Does anyone provide a Skype connection service?

  Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

• Referrer Strings

  I'm not exactly sure how to ask this, but here I go. I work for a company that provides IT services. Our main costumer has a website developed by WebCompany.com, and I act as a maintainer/middle-man for this website for our customer. What's happening is that on the front page there is a drop-down-menu with links. One link goes to a third party website - ThirdParty.com. This third party website automatically logs you in based on your IP or your referrer string. Homepage ThirdParty.com Logged in via IP or referrer string. What's happening... is Website.com is passing along inconsistent referrer strings. I've asked them to look into it and they say it's not their fault, referrer strings are handled at the browser. ThirdParty.com is actually nice enough to have IP and referrer string listed on the front page for users not logged in. So... how can I trace the referrer string so that I can figure out why http://Website.com's front page link to ThirdParty.com is showing a referrer as "None" or "Thirdparty.com" instead of "ThirdParty.com"? Their website is build in PHP. Can you force all links on a website to list "referrer" as "http://website.com/"? instead of "http://website.com/portal/1" or "http://website.com/page3"?

• Default values - are they good or evil?

  The question about default values in general - default return function values, default parameter values, default logic for when something is missing, default logic for handling exceptions, default logic for handling the edge conditions etc. For a long time I considered default values to be a "pure evil" thing, something that "cloaks the catastrophe" and results in a very hard do find bugs. But recently I started to think about default values as some sort of a technical debt ... which is not a straight bad thing but something that could provide some "short term financing" get us to survive the project (how many of us could afford to buy a house without taking out the mortgage?). When I say a "short term" - I don't mean - "do something quickly first and do refactor it out later before it hits the production". No - I am talking about relying on a hardcoded default values in a production software. Granted - it could cause some issues, but what if it only going to cause a single trouble in a whole year. Again - I am talking about the "average" mainstream software here (not a software for a nuclear power station) - the average web site or a UI application for the accounting software, meaning that people lives are not at stake, nor millions of dollars. Again, from my experience, business users would rather live with the software which "works somehow", rather then wait for a perfect one. And the use of default values helps a lot if you develop a software in a RAD style. But again - the longest debug sessions I have spent were because of the bugs introduced by a default value which either stopped being "a default" along the way or because a small subsystem has recently been upgraded and as a result of this upgrade it does not handle the default correctly (e.g. empty list vs null, or null string vs empty string). So my question is - are the default values good or evil. And if they are a technical debt - how do measure up how much you can borrow so you can afford the repayments? Would really appreciate any input. Cheers. EDIT: If I am using the default values as a way to cut the corners during the development - and if the corners cutting results in a bugs and issues - what is the methodology to recover from these issues?

  As part of our current project the Build Management team asked for a solution to undeploy multiple composites at one time. Of course you have the “Undeploy All from This Partition” menu option in Enterprise Manager but since we have a lot of deployments every day the guys wanted to have a script solution. It is even more important for the nightly deployments on our continuous integration environment – strange, we couldn’t find anybody who wants to do the undeployment via Enterprise Manager manually every night ;-) However with WLST or ANT the SOA Suite comes with two options to undeploy composites via script. In this article I’d like to explain you both ways. Undeployment with WLST You can test the steps below on Oracle's Pre-built Virtual Machine for SOA Suite and BPM Suite 11g. • How to present a stable data model in a public API that allows internal data structures to be changed without breaking the public view of the data?

  I am in the process of developing an application that allows users to write C# scripts. These scripts allow users to call selected methods and to access and manipulate data in a document. This works well, however, in the development version, scripts access the document's (internal) data structures directly. This means that if we were to change the internal data model/structure, there is a good chance that someone's script will no longer compile. We obviously want to prevent this breaking change from happening, but still want to allow the user to write sensible C# code (whilst not restricting how we develop our internal data model as a result). We therefore need to decouple our scripting API and its data structures from our internal methods and data structures. We've a few ideas as to how we might allow the user to access a what is effectively a stable public version of the document's internal data*, but I wanted to throw the question out there to someone who might have some real experience of this problem. NB our internal document's data structure is quite complex and it could be quite difficult to wrap. We know we want to expose as little as possible in our public API, especially as once it's out there, it's out there for good. Can anyone help? How do scripting languages / APIs decouple their public API and data structures from their internal data structures? Is there no real alternative to having to write a complex interaction layer? If we need to do this, what's a good approach or pattern for wrapping complex data structures that include nested objects, including collections? I've looked at the API facade pattern, which looks like it's trying to address these kinds of issues, but are there alternatives? *One idea is to build a data facade that is kept stable across versions of our application. The facade exposes a set of facade data objects that are used in the script code. These maintain backwards compatibility and wrap access to our internal document's data model.

• How can I fix this configure error?

  I'm trying to build mosh from source on a SUSE10 machine and am getting the following error: checking for protobuf... no configure: error: Package requirements (protobuf) were not met: No package 'protobuf' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables protobuf_CFLAGS and protobuf_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. I downloaded the source to protobuf and installed it in a custom path as well. I'm not using a package manager for any of this and cannot for various reasons outside the scope of the question. I added that custom path to my PATH and rehashed. Typically, this is enough for configure but in this case its not doing the trick. I added the prefix for protobuf to PKG_CONFIG_PATH but am still hitting this error. What should I do next to get past this error?

• VMWare shared folder out of sync

  After booting the guest system, the shared folders are in sync and all works well. But as soon, as I make a change to one of the files on my host system (Windows 7), the file on the guest system (Ubuntu) looses its last characters and still has the old version. So the actual change is not synced. However the version on the guest gets truncated. If I delete the file on the host and create a new one with new content, everything is in sync again. It all started happening when I updated VMWare player 6.0.1. And its happening for my Ubuntu guests only (Redhat works fine). How can I tell VMware tools to force a sync on the shared folders? My Oracle Support Communities (MOSC)  is a well established platform where experiences are shared. Reputation and trust are the basis for the quality of all communication there. A personalized  profile can help to build up a good reputation. Besides the experience counter, a good name, details about your location and business experience are valuable details. Although a little bit hidden, the profile's avatar can be customized, too. The profile's avatar is an eye catcher and can act as an unique visual representation for  you.  How to add / modify MOSC profile avatar (picture, icon)  ?    Don't look in Edit Profile section. After login, click on  your profile's name on top right.   This lists all public information as part of the Bio section. Select the Activity tab. The Change Avatar link is on same level at far right. A list of predefined symbolic pictures is populated. Choose from the list of existing pictures or try Add Another to upload an image file from your local computer (JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP only, maximum file size of 2.0 MB). Note: New added images can be used only after running through a review process. Usually after one business day they can be selected for your personal avatar.

• How do I add unmet dependencies for unity-lens-music autogen.sh?

  I would like to build unity-lens-music on my newly-upgraded Ubuntu 12.10 machine. I followed these instructions from the unity website to get the code. The README was empty but I guessed that ./autogen.sh would be a sensible place to start. Unfortunately it exits with the following error: checking for LENS_DAEMON... no configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.27 gobject-2.0 >= 2.27 gio-2.0 >= 2.27 gio-unix-2.0 >= 2.27 dee-1.0 >= 1.0.7 sqlite3 >= 3.7.7 gee-1.0 json-glib-1.0 unity >= 6.90.0 unity-extras >= 6.90.0 tdb >= 1.2.6) were not met: No package 'dee-1.0' found No package 'sqlite3' found No package 'gee-1.0' found No package 'json-glib-1.0' found No package 'unity' found No package 'unity-extras' found No package 'tdb' found When I attempt to satisfy the dependencies that aren't found using apt-get install I either find that there is no exact match (e.g. 'dee-1.0' which matches several packages), I already have the latest version (e.g. sqlite3, unity) or there is no match at all (e.g. unity-extras and tdb). There is a later suggestion to modify PKG_CONFIG_PATH if I have installed software in a non-standard location but, to my knowledge, I have not. How should I proceed?

• Facebook unresponsive in Chrome, pepper flash disabled

  Facebook becomes unresponsive after a second or two when I open Chrome. This problem happens every few weeks or so, and it's incredibly annoying. I've disabled Chrome's internal pepper flash: http://imgur.com/8hlqvaX I've also tried disabling all extensions, and even tried it in incognito mode. Facebook works just fine in Firefox, but it's totally unusable in Chrome. The problem goes away eventually, but it returns every now and then and it's super annoying. Chrome version: 30.0.1599.101 (Official Build 227552) m How can I fix this?

• Hack a Linksys Router into a Ambient Data Monitor

  If you have a data source (like a weather report, bus schedule, or other changing data set) you can pull it and display it with an ambient data monitor; this fun build combines a hacked Linksys router and a modified toy bus to display transit arrival times. John Graham-Cumming wanted to keep an eye on the current bus arrival time tables without constantly visiting the web site to check them. His workaround turns a hacked Linksys router, a display, a modified London city bus (you could hack apart a more project-specific enclosure, of course), and a simple bit code that polls the bus schedule’s API, into a cool ambient data monitor that displays the arrival time, in minutes, of the next two buses that will pass by his stop.   Raj, the Chennai JUG lead, together with others from that JUG, is interested in Visage, the JavaFX script language closely associated with Stephen Chin. He sent me the related lexer and parser and I started by having a look at them in the new version of ANTLRWorks being developed by Sam Harwell (who demonstrated it very effectively during JavaOne): Notice how the lexer and parser are shown in a tree structure, as well as in a cool syntax diagram. Next, I downloaded a bunch of JARs from here, so that packages such as from "com.sun.tools.mjavac" can be used, i.e., these are Visage-specific packages that aren't found anywhere except in the location below: http://code.google.com/p/visage/wiki/GettingStarted It turns out that there's also a Visage NetBeans plugin out there: http://code.google.com/p/visage/source/browse/?repo=netbeans-plugin Rather than recreating everything from scratch, i.e., generating ANTLR Java classes from the lexer and parser, I copied a lot of stuff from the site above and now a file Raj sent me looks as follows, i.e., basic syntax coloring is shown: For anyone wanting to seriously support Visage in NetBeans IDE, I recommend downloading the existing Visage NetBeans plugin above, rather than creating everything yourself from scratch, and then figuring out how to use that code in some way, i.e., add the JARs I pointed to above, and work on its build.xml file, which could be frustrating in the beginning, but there's no point in recreating everything if everything already exists.

• HPC Cluster planning workflow?

  After three days of intensive Google searching, I have not found any high-level workflow of how to build a low profile - cheap - computing cluster (we are not interested in HA yet). This is just a front-end plus a node for now. We want to start small with rockscluster, provide a web-based server for offering services, and then add nodes as our budget increases. We're small company, so we haven't enough human resources to implement it smoothly. Here are some facts about our environment: Our hardware is not constant (we will add nodes). • Low pagerank backlinks - does Google penalize?

  I have a new stock discussion forum and I would like to promote it. Specifically, I have two ideas in mind to help promote it: 1) Become a member at other stock discussion forums. Make high quality posts, build a good reputation, and leave a link to my own forum in a non intrusive way (ie. in signature or at the end of my posts). This approach makes sense because you can find other members in other forums that are interested in stock discussion and a backlink to your forum, as long as it is not done in an intrusive/spammy way, should come across as acceptable. 2) Promote my site by writing articles at Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. This approach also makes sense because that's what Squidoo and Hubpages is for. The problem with both these approaches is that when I leave a backlink to my site, the page that I am leaving a backlink from may have a low PR - most likely, a PR of 0. Now, I have read that after the Penguin update by Google, your site can be penalized if you have too many backlinks from low PR pages: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/224339 So, I am caught in a dilemma: a) If I start promoting my site via other stock forums, Squidoo, Hubpages, etc, but the backlink to my site comes from a page with low PR, Google may penalize my site. b) However, if I don't promote my site, nobody will ever discover it (aside from other promotion techniques like social media promotion, directories, etc).

• Issues with non-HP harddisk in HP ML 350 server?

  I'm looking to buy some extra disk space for a HP ML 350 G5 server. It is for simple file-serving - not OS/system stuff. HP harddisks are insanely expensive, so I'm tempted to buy some other brand instead. I have heard that they sometime use special firmware on their disks, but I suspect that might just be HP spreading rumors to sell disks. Does anyone have experience using non-HP disks? Any features not working, or not being able to build the RAID at all? I'm looking at 2.5" SAS Seagate drives - Constellation 500 GB (7.2k) or Savvio 600 GB (10k).

• What features are helpful when performing remote debugging / diagnostics?

  Obviously, the easiest way to solve a bug is to be able to reproduce it in-house. However, sometimes that is not practical. For starters, users are often not very good at providing you with useful information. Customer Service: "what seems to be the issue?" User: "It crashed!" To further compound that, sometimes the bug only occurs under certain environmentally conditions that can not be adequately replicated in-house. With that in mind, it is important to build some sort of diagnostic framework into your product. What types of built-in diagnostic tools have you used or seen used? Logging seems to be the predominate method, which makes sense. We have a fairly sophisticated logging frame work in place with different levels of verbosity and the ability to filter on specific modules (actually we can filter down to the granularity of a single file). Error logs are placed strategically to manufacture a pretty good representation of a stack trace when an error occurs. We don't have the luxury of 10 million terabytes of disk space since I work on embedded platforms, so we have two ways of getting them off the system: a serial port and a syslog server. However, an issue we run into sometimes is actually getting the user to turn the logs on. Our current framework often requires some user interaction.

• Script/tool to import series of snapshots, each being a new revision, into Subversion, populating source tree?

  I've developed code locally and taken a fairly regular snapshot whenever I reach a significant point in development, e.g. a working build. So I have a long-ish list of about 40 folders, each folder being a snapshot e.g. in ascending date YYYYMMDD order, e.g.:- 20100523 20100614 20100721 20100722 20100809 20100901 20101001 20101003 20101104 20101119 20101203 20101218 20110102 I'm looking for a script to import each of these snapshots as a new subversion revision to the source tree. The end result being that the HEAD revision is the same as the last snapshot, and other revisions are as numbered. Some other requirements: that the HEAD revision is not cumulative of the previous snapshots, i.e., files that appeared in older snapshots but which don't appear in later ones (e.g. due to refactoring etc.) should not appear in the HEAD revision. meanwhile, there should be continuity between files that do persist between snapshots. Subversion should know that there are previous versions of these files and not treat them as brand new files within each revision. Some background about my aim: I need to formally revision control this work rather than keep local private snapshot copies. I plan to release this work as open source, so version controlling would be highly recommended I am evaluating some of the current popular version control systems (Subversion and GIT) BUT I definitely need a working solution in Subversion. I'm not looking to be persuaded to use one particular tool, I need a solution for each tool I am considering as I would also like a solution in GIT (I will post an answer separately for GIT so separate camps of folks who have expertise in GIT and Subversion will be able to give focused answers on one or the other).   If you’re looking for an effective way to link remote LANs without the hassle of laying cable, this DIY bi-directional antenna is a quick (and cheap) method for bringing internet access to outbuildings and other locations. Tinker Danilo Larizza needed to share internet access between apartments that are relatively close together but not hardwired–ruling out simply sharing the access via existing LAN infrastructure. His solution combines a simple scrap wire antenna array mounted inside a plastic food bin (seen here with the cover removed to show the antenna) and some coaxial cable to link the antenna to two routers. Our favorite part about his build is that he constructed the pair to establish if the antenna setup would even work in his location and intended to buy commercial antennas if it did; his Tupperware models worked so well, however, they’re now the permanent solution. • Sensitive data in init scripts

  I'm adapting some examples I've found by Googling to build an init script to run a VirtualBox OSE virtual machine as a daemon. I would like to specify a password for VNC access to the VM, and this must be given as an argument to the VBoxHeadless command. Conventionally, init scripts are readable by standard users, and this seems like a useful convention, but I also don't want the VNC password for this VM to be stored in easily accessible plain text. What's the most appropriate/conventional way to handle this kind of situation? Maybe put a root-readable supporting data file someplace, and have the init script load the value from there?
