Database design - alternatives for Entity Attribute Value (EAV)

Hi, see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/695752/product-table-many-kinds-of-product-each-product-has-many-parameters for similar topic. My question: i want to design a database, that will be used for a production facility of different types of products where each product has its own (number of) parameters. because i want the serial numbers to be in one tabel for overview purposes i have a problem with these different paraeters . One solution could be EAV, but it has its downsides, certainly because we have +- 5 products with every product +- 20.000 serial numbers (records). it looks a bit overkill to me... I just don't know how one could design a database so that you have an attribute in a mastertable that says: 'hey, you could find details of this record in THAT detail-table". 'in a way that you qould easely query the results) currenty i am using Visual Basic & Acces 2007. but i'm going to Visual Basic & MySQL. thanks for your help. Bob

I was working through the Rosetta Code example of the knapsack problem in R and I came up with four solutions. I found that because transactions are commited automaticaly so to force the commit i use em.commit() However i would like to know how to check if it is unique.Running a query isnt a solution because it may be an instert after checking because of the concurency.... Using Phing's dbdeploy task with transactions

I am using Phing's dbdeploy task to manage my database schema. This is working fine, as long as there is no errors in my delta file. However, if there is an error, dbdeploy will just run the delta files up to the query with the error and then abort. This causes me some frustration, because I have to manually rollback the entry in the changelog table then. If I don't, dbdeploy will assume the migration was successful on a subsequent try. So the question is, there any way to get dbdeploy use transactions?

what to do when Bing api provides inaccurate results

I am trying to use the bing Phonebook search for locations in China, but all the latitude and longitude are inaccurate. Using the following http://api.bing.net/xml.aspx?AppId=appid&Query=nike&Sources=Phonebook&Latitude=39.9883699&Longitude=116.3309665&Radius=30.0&Phonebook.Count=10&Phonebook.Offset=30 I get multiple locations with the same latitude and longitude, and the rounding is off as well. The latitude and longitude will always end with either .x00001 or .0. The results from the pho:LocalSerpUrl http://www.bing.com/shenghuo/default.aspx?what=nike&where=&s_cid=ansPhBkYp01&ac=false&FORM=SOAPGN /pho:LocalSerpUrl Is right, but the results from the returned xml is off. Also it seems users outside of China can't hit that url and get the result. So I am wondering how I can contact bing and inquire about this problem

Hello. I want to list messages that received specific user from other users group by ID's and ordered by last message received. If I use this query: SELECT MAX(id), fromid, toid, message FROM pro_messages WHERE toid=00003 GROUP BY fromid I do not get last message sent from user "fromid" to user "toid" but the first message sent. Can I do that in some other way or I need to do it with two queries or join tables? id - message id fromid - id of user who sent message toid - id of user who receive message (in this case user 00003)

SQL: Return "true" if list of records exists?

An alternative title might be: Check for existence of multiple rows? Using a combination of SQL and C# I want a method to return true if all products in a list exist in a table. If it can be done in all in SQL that would be preferable. I have written a method that returns whether a single productID exists using the following SQL: SELECT productID FROM Products WHERE ProductID = @productID If this returns a row, then the c# method returns true, false otherwise. Now I'm wondering if I have a list of product IDs (not a huge list mind you, normally under 20). How can I write a query that will return a row if all the product id's exist and no row if one or more product id's does not exist? (Maybe something involving "IN" like: SELECT * FROM Products WHERE ProductID IN (1, 10, 100))

Using named pipes in Rails

I need to read and write some data through named pipes. I have tested it in a simple Ruby app, and it works nice. But I dont know, where should i put it in my Rails app? I have heard about Rake tasks, but i don't sure, is it right solution. I need to open a pipe-file, and listen to data. If there is any, i need to process it and make a DB-query. Then, write some data to another pipe. I know, how it works, but the only problem - how to run it with Rails? Give me some examples, please.

I have a web service which runs with a HttpHandler class. In this class, I inspect the request stream for form / query string parameters. In some circumstances, it seemed as though these parameters weren't getting through. After a bit of digging around, I came across some behaviour I don't quite understand. I'm calling a web API exposed by TheyWorkForYou (TWFI). http://www.theyworkforyou.com/api/ I'm using the Python bindings provided by twfython: http://code.google.com/p/twfython/ I wrote some code to call this API a few months ago, at which time it worked fine. But now I dig it out to run it again, no matter what query I ask of the API, it always returns '{}' (an empty dictionary). I like the apparent simplicity of JdbcTemplate but am a little confused as to how it works. It appears that each operation (query() or update()) fetches a connection from a datasource and closes it. Beautiful, but how do you perform multiple SQL queries within the same connection? I might want to perform multiple operations in sequence (for example SELECT followed by an INSERT followed by a commit) or I might want to perform nested queries (SELECT and then perform a second SELECT based on result of each row). How do I do that with JdbcTemplate. Am I using the right class?

Trouble with MySQL: CONCAT_WS(' ', name_first, name_middle, name_last) like '%keyword%'

hey folks, I'm setting up a keyword search across multiple fields: name_first, name_middle, name_last but I'm not getting the results I'd like. Here's the query: "SELECT accounts_users.user_ID, users.name_first, users.name_middle, users.name_last, users.company FROM accounts_users, users WHERE accounts_users.account_ID = '$account_ID' AND accounts_users.user_ID = users.id AND CONCAT_WS(' ', users.name_first, users.name_middle, users.name_last) LIKE '$user_keyword%' ORDER BY users.name_first ASC" So, if I've got three names in the DB: Aaron J Ban Aaron J Can Bob L Lawblaw And if the user_keyword == "bob lawblaw" I get no result. If user_keyword == "bob L" then it returns Bob L Lawblaw. Obviously I can't force people to include the persons middle name in their keyword search but I'm stuck for the proper way to do this. All help is greatly appreciated.

MySql timeouts - Should I set autoReconnect=true in Spring application?

After periods of inactivity on my website (Using Spring 2.5 and MySql), I get the following error: org.springframework.dao.RecoverableDataAccessException: The last packet sent successfully to the server was 52,847,830 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. According to this question, and the linked bug, I shouldn't just set autoReconnect=true. Does this mean I have to catch this exception on any queries I do and then retry the transaction? Should that logic be in the data access layer, or the model layer? Is there an easy way to handle this instead of wrapping every single query to catch this?

Although when I query to see the whether the left property is 0 I get a non zero values. Does anyone know why this might be? Read XML Files using LINQ to XML and Extension Methods

In previous blog posts I have discussed how to use XML files to store data in your applications. I showed you how to read those XML files from your project and get XML from a WCF service. One of the problems with reading XML files is when elements or attributes are missing. If you try to read that missing data, then a null value is returned. This can cause a problem if you are trying to load that data into an object and a null is read. This blog post will show you how to create extension methods to detect null values and return valid values to load into your object. The XML Data An XML data file called Product.xml is located in the \Xml folder of the Silverlight sample project for this blog post. This XML file contains several rows of product data that will be used in each of the samples for this post. Each row has 4 attributes; namely ProductId, ProductName, IntroductionDate and Price. <Products> <Product ProductId="1" ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET" IntroductionDate="07/01/2010" Price="799" /> <Product ProductId="2" ProductName="ASP.Net Jumpstart Samples" IntroductionDate="05/24/2005" Price="0" /> ... ...</Products> The Product Class Just as you create an Entity class to map each column in a table to a property in a class, you should do the same for an XML file too. In this case you will create a Product class with properties for each of the attributes in each element of product data. You can see this class in the sample you download for this blog post. Reading Data When using LINQ to XML you call the Load method of the XElement class to load the XML file. Once the XML file has been loaded, you write a LINQ query to iterate over the “Product” Descendants in the XML file. The “select” portion of the LINQ query creates a new Product object for each row in the XML file. You retrieve each attribute by passing each attribute name to the Attribute() method and retrieving the data from the “Value” property. The Value property will return a null if there is no data, or will return the string value of the attribute. If you have any missing attributes in any of the rows in the XML file, or if the data in the ProductId or IntroductionDate is not of the appropriate type, then this code will fail! The reason? There is no built-in check to ensure that the correct type of data is contained in the XML file. This is where extension methods can come in real handy. Using Extension Methods Instead of using the Convert class to perform type conversions as you just saw, create a set of extension methods attached to the XAttribute class. These extension methods will perform null-checking and ensure that a valid value is passed back instead of an exception being thrown if there is invalid data in your XML file. private void LoadProducts(){ var xElem = XElement.Load(Product.XmlFile); var products = from elem in xElem.Descendants("Product") orderby elem.Attribute("ProductName").Value select new Product { ProductId = elem.Attribute("ProductId").GetAsInteger(), ProductName = elem.Attribute("ProductName").GetAsString(), IntroductionDate = elem.Attribute("IntroductionDate").GetAsDateTime(), Price = elem.Attribute("Price").GetAsDecimal() }; lstData.DataContext = products;} Writing Extension Methods To create an extension method you will create a class with any name you like. In the code listing below is a class named XmlExtensionMethods. This listing just shows a couple of the available methods such as GetAsString and GetAsInteger. These methods are just like any other method you would write except when you pass in the parameter you prefix the type with the keyword “this”. This lets the compiler know that it should add this method to the class specified in the parameter. public static class XmlExtensionMethods{ public static string GetAsString(this XAttribute attr) { string ret = string.Empty; if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value)) { ret = attr.Value; } return ret; } public static int GetAsInteger(this XAttribute attr) { int ret = 0; int value = 0; if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value)) { if(int.TryParse(attr.Value, out value)) ret = value; } return ret; } ... ...} Each of the methods in the XmlExtensionMethods class should inspect the XAttribute to ensure it is not null and that the value in the attribute is not null. If the value is null, then a default value will be returned such as an empty string or a 0 for a numeric value. Summary Extension methods are a great way to simplify your code and provide protection to ensure problems do not occur when reading data. You will probably want to create more extension methods to handle XElement objects as well for when you use element-based XML. Feel free to extend these extension methods to accept a parameter which would be the default value if a null value is detected, or any other parameters you wish. What I am trying to achieve is to extract all links with a href attribute that starts with http://, https:// or /. These links lie within a table (tbody tr td etc) with a certain class. I thought I could specify just the the a element without the whole path to it but it does not seem to work. I have a hierarchy table in SQL Server 2005 which contains employees - managers - department - location - state. Sample table for hierarchy table: ID Name ParentID Type 1 PA NULL 0 (group) 2 Pittsburgh 1 1 (subgroup) 3 Accounts 2 1 4 Alex 3 2 (employee) 5 Robin 3 2 6 HR 2 1 7 Robert 6 2 Second one is fact table which contains employee salary details ID and Salary. Sample data for fact table: ID Salary 4 6000 5 5000 7 4000 Is there any good to way to display the hierarchy from hierarchy table with aggregated sum of salary based on employees. Expected result is like Name Salary PA 15000 (Pittsburgh + others(if any)) Pittusburgh 15000 (Accounts + HR) Accounts 11000 (Alex + Robin) Alex 6000 (direct values) Robin 5000 HR 4000 Robert 4000 In my production environment, hierarchy table may contain 23000+ rows and fact table may contain 300,000+ rows. So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?
