• Planning milestones and time

  I was hired by a marketing company a year ago initially for link building / SEO stuff, but I'm actually a Web developer and took the job just in desperation to have one (I'm still quite young and just finished 2nd year of University). From the 3rd day my boss realised that I'm not into that stuff at all and since he had an idea of a web based app we started to plan it. I estimated that it shouldn't take me longer than two months to do it, but as I was making it we soon realised that we want to add more and more stuff to make it even better. So the development on my own lasted for about 4 months, but then it became an enterprise size app and we hired another programmer to work along me. The guy was awesome at what he did, but because I was assigned to be programmer/project manager I had to set up milestones with deadlines and we missed most of them, because most of the time it was too much work, and my lack of experience kept me setting really optimistic deadlines. We still kept adding features and had changed the architecture of the application twice. My boss is a great guy and he gets that when we add features it expands the time frame in which things should be done so he wasn't angry at me nor the other guy. But I was feeling bad (I still am) that I suck at planning. I gained loads of experience from the programming side, but I still lack the management/planning skills which make me go nuts. So over the last year I have dedicated probably about 8 months of work to this app (obviously my studies affected it) and we're launching as a closed beta this month. So my question is how do I get better at planning/managing a project, how do you estimate the times? What do you take into consideration when setting goals. I'm working alone again because the other guy moved from the city. But I'm sure we'll be hiring to help me maintain it so I need to get better at it. Any hints, points or anything on the topic are appreciated.

• Failure Driven Development

  At our shop, we strive to be agile. And I'd say we are making great strides. That said, a few of us have spotted a pattern we have started calling "Failure Driven Development". Failure Driven Development can basically be desribed as an agile release/iteration cycle where the bugs/features are guided not by tasks and stories with acceptance criteria, but with defects entered in the defect tracking software. Our team has a great Project Manager who strives to get the acceptance criteria from the customer(s), but it's not always possible. From my development chair, this is due to the customer either not knowing exactly what they want or (and this is the kicker) two different "camps" at the customer's main office conflict with how a story should be implemented. Camp A will losely dictate that Feature X works like this, then Camp B will fail it due not functioning like that. Hence, the term "FDD". The process is driven by "failures". This leads to my question: Has anyone else encountered this and if so, any tips/suggestions for dealing with it? We have, of course, tried to get Camp A and B to agree prior, but everyone knows this isn't always the case. Thanks

• Central renderer for a given scene

  When creating a central rendering system for all game objects in a given scene I am trying to work out the best way to go about passing the scene to the render system to be rendered. If I have a scene managed by an arbitrary structure, i.e., an octree, bsp trees, quad-tree, kd tree, etc. What is the best way to pass this to the render system? The obvious problem is that if simply given the root node of the structure, the render system would require an intrinsic knowledge of the structure in order to traverse the structure. My solution to this is to clip all objects outside the frustum in the scene manager and then create a list of the objects which are left and pass this simple list to the render system, be it an array, a vector, a linked list, etc. (This would be a structure required by the render system as a means to know which objects should be rendered). The list would of course attempt to minimise OpenGL state changes by grouping objects that require the same rendering operations to be performed on them. I have been thinking a lot about this and started searching various terms on here and followed any additional information/links but I have not really found a definitive answer. The case may be that there is no definitive answer but I would appreciate some advice and tips. My question is, is this a reasonable solution to the problem? Are there any improvements that I could make? Are there any caveats I should know about? Side question: Am I right in assuming that octrees, bsp trees, etc are all forms of BVH?

• recent unreliable wireless connection

  Recently, my internet connection over wireless ( via a Netgear KWGR614 router ) has become unreliable, on both a Dell laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 as well as my Desktop running Ubuntu 10.10 . The problem does not seem to occur on a laptop running Windows Vista, nor on a Desktop running Windows 7 ( this machine is connected with an ethernet cable ). The problem does not seem to occur on my Openmoko Freerunner ( running Android 1.5 ), though I hardly ever use this device to connect over WLAN, so the problem may have just slipped by. On my main Ubuntu Desktop, I have tried the following wireless devices: a Longshine PCI card ( an old device with an RTL8180L chip ) a D-Link DWL-510 PCI card ( this device threw warnings in dmesg ) a USB device from MSI ( US54EX ). Usually my wireless network shows up in the network manager with a normal signal strength, even when the connection speed is slow or the connection gets reset ( asking me to click connect to re-authenticate my wireless connection ). I have observed this problem with a Netgear KWGR614 Router ( with the manufacturers firmware ), as well as with a TP-LINK TL-WR741ND router running OpenWrt. Taking a look at my routers logs, I find many instances of the following line: Tuesday,04 Jan 2011 03:53:01 [TCP SYN Flood][Deny access policy matched, dropping packet] I know that the Netgear router is susceptible to denial of service attacks, as I have previously been able to disrupt its operation by putting an nmap scan into a while loop. I use WEP or WPA to encrypt the wireless network. Is it possible that someone is jamming my signal ?

• Cleaning Up After Chrome

  I find Google Chrome, which I have no interest in, is continually getting installed on machines in my house, mostly due to Adobe Shockwave bringing it along as an install package. (Family members are agreeing to the download, not realizing the Chrome is getting dropped as well.) My major issue after uninstalling Chrome is that you can no longer click on links in Outlook emails. There is a lot on the web about this, and Google has not been proactive at fixing their uninstaller. I have now added a registry file to my Win64 systems to reset the problem registry keys and clear the error. This registry file is pretty simple. It merely resets HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.htm, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html, and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.shtml back to their default values of "htmlfile". Chrome takes over the handling of these file extensions because its default install is to make itself the default web browser. The Chrome uninstalled fails to clear/reset them. In troubleshooting this, I looked in my registry based on the web info on the Chrome uninstall problem. Since my system had never had Chrome installed, my registry did not have the problem keys. To troubleshoot, I installed (ugh!) and uninstalled Chrome. Sure enough, Chrome left the expected debris with a value string of "ChromeHTML.PR2EPLWMBQZK3BY7Z2BFBMFERU" or something similar. Resetting these values fixed the problem. I see that Chrome leaves quite a bit of debris behind in the registry. I guess it is creating the keys then leaving them behind, even though their presence (with bad data) subsequently affects operations.

• How to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 in EFI mode with Encrypted LVM?

  I'm trying to properly install Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with the alternate install CD ".iso" on a lenovo Thinkpad X220. Default Hard Disk (with a pre-installed version of Windows 7) has been replaced with a brand new SSD. The UEFI BIOS of the lenovo Thinkpad X220 is set to "UEFI Boot only" & "USB UEFI BIOS Support" is enabled (I'm using an external USB DVD reader to perform Ubuntu installation). The BIOS is a Phoenix SecureCore Tiano, BIOS version is 8DET56WW (1.26). The attempts below are made with the UEFI BIOS settings described above. Here's what I've tried so far: Boot on a live GParted CD Create a GPT partition table Create a FAT32 partition for UEFI System, set the partition to "EF00" type ("boot" flag) Leave remaining space unformated Boot on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with alternate CD: Perform the install with network updates enabled Use manual partitioning FAT32 partition created with GParted is used as "EFI System partition" Remaining space is set to be used as "Physical volume for LVM" Then "Configure encrypted volumes" using the previous "Physical volume for LVM" as the encrypted container, passphrase is setup. "Configure the Logical Volume Manager" creating a volume Group using the encrypted container /dev/mapper/sda2_crypt Creation of the Logical Volumes "Create logical volume", choosing the previously created volume Group Assign a mount point and file system to the Logical volumes : LV-root for / LV-var for /var LV-usr for /usr LV-usr-local for /usr/local LV-swap for swap LV-home for /home NOTE: /tmp would be in RAM only using TMPFS Bootloader step: neither my ESP partition (/dev/sda1, /dev/sda or MBR) seems to be the right place for GRUB, I get the following message (X suffix is for demonstration only): unable to install grub in /dev/sdaX Executing 'grub-install /dev/sdaX' failed This is a fatal error. Finish installation without the Bootloader & Reboot The system doesn't start, there's no EFI/GRUB menu at startup. What are the steps to perform a clean and working installation of Ubuntu 12.04.1 Precise Pangolin, 64bit version in U(EFI) mode using the encrypted LUKS + LVM scheme described above?

• Internet slow on one router only [the problem only in Ubuntu] [on hold]

  Internet works perfectly on every other router, but browsing sucks at home (slow browsing and slow loading times). I changed DNS servers to 8.8.0.0, still doesn't help. And funnily, download speed is extremely high on this network (meaning torrents for example), but using browsers and loading websites is extremely slow (only on this network). Do I need to change something in router settings or what can I try? By the way, I use wired connection to router. EDIT: There's no problems when using Windows.   First ATMs performed tasks like a cash dispenser, they were offline machines which worked with punch cards impregnated with Carbon and a 6-digit PIN code. Maximum withdrawal with a card was 10 pounds and each one was a one-time use card - ATM swallowed cards! The first ATM was installed in London in the year 1967, as I looked at time line of programming languages, there were many programming languages made before that decade. I don't know about the hardware neither, but in which programming language it was written? *I didn't find a detailed biography of John Shepherd-Barron (ATM inventor at 70s) Update I found this picture, which is taken from a newspaper back to the year 1972 in Iran. • Java SE 8 (with JavaFX) Developer Preview Release for ARM

  In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples. • Commands don't have permission when using absplute path

  I have folders set up this way: /srv/samba/video getfacl /srv/samba/video # file: srv/samba/video # owner: root # group: nogroup user::rwx group::--- group:sambaclients:rwx group:deluge:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::--- default:group:sambaclients:rwx default:group:deluge:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- That means, user deluge has rwx to folder /srv/samba/video. However, when running command as user deluge, I am getting weird permission errors. When in folder /srv/samba/video: sudo -u deluge mkdir foo works flawlessly. But when using absolute path: sudo -u deluge mkdir /srv/samba/video/foo I am getting permission denied. When running sudo -u deluge id, I get output uid=113(deluge) gid=124(deluge) skupiny=124(deluge) which shows that user deluge is indeed in group deluge. Also, the behavior was the same when I gave the permissions also to user deluge not just group deluge. When executing as non-system user, it does work. The reason that I want to use absolute paths is that I am using automatically triggered post-download script which extracts some files into the folder. I have spent way too many hours to solve this problem myself. mkdir isn't the only command that fails, touch is doing the same thing, so I suspect that it's not mkdir's fault. If you need more info, I will try to put it in here, just ask. Thanx in advance.

• A fix for the design time error in MVVM Light V4.1

  For those of you who installed V4.1 of MVVM Light and created a project for Windows Phone 8, you will have noticed an error showing up in the design surface (either in Visual Studio designer, or in Expression Blend). The error says: “Could not load type ‘System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging’ from assembly ‘mscorlib.extensions’” with additional information about version numbers. The error is caused by an incompatibility between versions of System.Windows.Interactivity. Because this assembly is strongly named, any version incompatibility is causing the kind of error shown here (for an interesting discussion on the strong naming issue, see this thread on Codeplex). I managed to resolve the issue for Windows Phone 8 and will publish a cleaned up installer next week. In the mean time, in order to allow you to continue development, please follow the steps: Download the new DLLs zip package (MVVMLight_V4_1_25_WP8). Right click on the Zip file and select Properties from the context menu. Press the “Unblock” button (if available) and then OK. Right click again on the zip package and select “Extract all…”. Select a known location for the new DLLs. Open the MVVM Light project with the design time error in Visual Studio 2012. Open the References folder in the Solution Explorer. Select the following DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll, GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll, Microsoft.Practices.ServiceLocation.dll and System.Windows.Interactivity.dll. Press “delete” and confirm to remove the DLLs from your project. Right click on References and select Add Reference from the context menu. Browse to the folder with the new DLLs. Select the four new DLLs and press OK. Rebuild your application, and open it again in Blend or in the Visual Studio designer. The error should be gone now. In the next few days, as time allows, I will publish a new MSI containing a fixed version of the DLLs as well as a few other improvements. • Build vs Rebuild

  Build means compile and link only the source files that have changed since the last build, while Rebuild means compile and link all source files regardless of whether they changed or not. Build is the normal thing to do and is faster. Sometimes the versions of project target components can get out of sync and rebuild is necessary to make the build successful. In practice, you never need to Clean. Build or Rebuild Solution builds or rebuilds all projects in the your solution, while Build or Rebuild <project name> builds or rebuilds the StartUp project. To set the StartUp project, right click on the desired project name in the Solution Explorer tab and select Set as StartUp project. The project name now appears in bold. Compile just compiles the source file currently being edited. Useful to quickly check for errors when the rest of your source files are in an incomplete state that would prevent a successful build of the entire project. Ctrl-F7 is the shortcut key for Compile. All source files that have changed are saved when you request a build/rebuild, so you don't have to save them first. When you run your executable (F5 or Ctrl-F5), Visual Studio saves all your changed source files and builds anything that changed, so you don't need to explicitly do those steps every time. This allows for quick "trial and error" debugging. • "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda" when installing GRUB

  I recently bought a shiny new Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and I want to dual boot it with Ubuntu for studying purposes. Its built-in OS is Windows 8.1 and it has a 256GB SSD. I've made a separate 90GB partition just for Ubuntu and a live USB to install it. The first time everything seemed to work great, I solved the wifi issued by blacklisting ideapad_laptop, the installation went flawlessly and Ubuntu worked fine. When I got up the next morning and turned on my laptop it booted into Windows right away without ever showing the GRUB menu. So I tried to reset, and checked my partitions with the Disk Manager and everything looked fine. Since I couldn't find a solution online I went ahead and formatted the partition to try and install again. This time and every time since, the installation was aborted and I got a fatal error saying: Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda Executing `grub-install /dev/sda` failed. This is a fatal error. Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem? If any further information is needed I would be happy to provide it. Thanks. When installing I get the following in details: ubuntu kernel: [ 1946.372741] FAT-fs (sda2): error, fat_get_cluster: invalid cluster chain (i_pos 0). ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --force failed.

• I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • What Does Installing Ubuntu "Alongside" Windows Entail?

  I recently posted a question about an error I was receiving trying to access Ubuntu from the boot menu. I am using Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.x (I THINK because I haven't accessed it in over a year due to being unable to run an important program for one of my classes on Ubuntu). On another laptop, I partitioned the hard drive and installed Windows and Ubuntu on the partitions. On this laptop, I simply installed Ubuntu from Windows, picking the option "alongside Windows", and didn't partition my hard drive manually. I was under the impression "alongside" entailed that Ubuntu would partition my hard drive, and that if I were to return my Windows partition to factory settings it would not affect the Ubuntu partition. However, given my current problem, I am wondering if I was mistaken in this assumption? When installing Ubuntu from Windows, selecting "alongside" Windows as the option from the Ubuntu installer, does that simply install Ubuntu within the Windows partition and thus returning it to factory settings would wipe out anything I had on the Ubuntu OS as well? Ubuntu is still in the boot menu as an option, but when I try to access it it says the drive is "corrupt" and wubi is mentioned in the error. I additionally tried to download a program ran from Windows to investigate partitions and there were no sign of my Ubuntu partition viewable from Windows. Is it possible Windows just can't see it? Any insight, corrections or answers is appreciated.

• Changing the Default Windows Phone 7 Deployment Target In Visual Studio 2010

  After you download and install the January 2011 Windows Phone update, you will notice one annoying thing. The default deployment target for Windows Phone Projects in Visual Studio changes to Windows Phone 7 Device. Before the update, it defaulted to the Emulator. I found this extremely annoying as I’m more than likely going to test with the emulator before putting it on my actual device. Now to make things fair, Microsoft told you they were going to switch the default and even provided a solution, but you will have to check a tiny paragraph in the release notes. The good news is that its very easy to do: Simply navigate out to : %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Phone Tools\CoreCon See the folder named, “10.0”? Go ahead and delete it. Now, the folder will be completely empty and if you fire up Visual Studio 2010 you will see we are now defaulting to the Emulator again. In my opinion, this should have been left at Emulator. • Installation causing broken packages

  Here I come I am so determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot). When I got it I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev but doesn't help, only makes life complicated. What the *#$%&!!! I don't want to be forced to become a computer scientist just to be able to use a free source os. P.s. the sound stopped working

  I have an Alienware Dell PC with Intel HD 4000 Graphics (Ivy Bridge) as verified by the output of lspci | grep VGA posted below. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) The PC only has HDMI and DVI display outputs and using the HDMI output I am only being offered abnormal resolutions. As you can see below it does not even list HDMI1 or DVI1 but just only a fallback. $ export DISPLAY=:0.0 && xrandr xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1360 x 768, maximum 1360 x 768 default connected 1360x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1360x768 0.0* 1024x768 0.0 800x600 0.0 640x480 0.0 How can I fix this? Does it just need to be configured differently or will I need to use a newer kernel (as Intel Graphics drivers are included in the kernel)?
