  • JET now available on OTN

    I know some of you have been waiting patiently, so I'm pleased to announce that the JET bundle is now available for download on the Oracle Technology Network. I've migrated most of the content from the old Sun wiki site, and got the download in a single handy location on OTN. Download JET now.  The version available is the current latest, which is 4.9.4. This version contains a number of updates, the most significant of which is the ability to specify slot locations instead of the traditional cXtYdZsN nomenclature. This is pretty useful when trying to Jumpstart multiple servers with SAS2.0 based HBAs, as they will have the WWN embedded in the cXtYdZsN name, and it's pretty difficult to guess what that will be until you've booted the server. The JetSDS and JetZFS modules have also been updated to use the slot terminology. Happy JETing,

    To start out our ghost hunting here at the Oracle Santa Clara campus office, we first need a ghost sensor. It's pretty easy to build one, since all we need to do is to create a circuit that can detect small fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, just like the fluctuations that ghosts cause when they pass by... Naturally, right? So, we build a static charge sensor and will use a Java Embedded app to monitor for changes in the sensor value, running analytics using Java technology on a Raspberry Pi. Bob's your uncle, and there you have it: a ghost sensor.   • SMTP mailbox unavailable - intermittent and self-inflicted

    I have an app that runs daily, sending confirmation emails to dozens of customers. Emails are sent using SMTP with authentication. The app also has some error handling, and occasionally anonymous SMTP is used to notify the webmaster that an e-mail issue has been encountered (a malformed email address, usually). Whenever these warning notifications are sent, the customer notifications that follow throw an error: "Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay". The customer notification emails are sent, but my app drops into the exception handler. And all subsequent customer notification emails have this problem. Everything is fine next time the programs run, until a webmaster warning email is sent. Anyone have an ideas what would cause this? My first thought was that the client didn't like being switched back and forth between anonymous to authenticated modes. I created a separate client for each mode, but that didn't help.

    JavaFX 2.2.4 and JDK 7u10 were released on Tuesday. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: A new document, Using the Image Ops API, describes how to read and write raw pixel data to and from JavaFX images. The Handling JavaFX Events document has been updated with more information on touch events. The Working with Touch Events chapter and Touch Events sample provide information about handling individual touch points to provide sophisticated responses to touch actions. The Implementing Best Practices document has been updated to include information about running tasks on background threads. The Troubleshooting section of Deploying JavaFX Applications now includes a section about disabling the automatic proxy configuration in your application code.   • Fluent interface design and code smell

    public class StepClause { public NamedStepClause Action1() {} public NamedStepClause Action2() {} } public class NamedStepClause : StepClause { public StepClause Step(string name) {} } Basically, I want to be able to do something like this: var workflow = new Workflow().Configure() .Action1() .Step("abc").Action2() .Action2() .Step("def").Action1(); So, some "steps" are named and some are not. The thing I do not like is that the StepClause has knowledge of its derived class NamedStepClause. I tried a couple of things to make this sit better with me. I tried to move things out to interfaces but then the problem just moved from the concrete to the interfaces - INamedStepClause still need to derive from IStepClause and IStepClause needs to return INamedStepClause to be able to call Step(). I could also make Step() part of a completely separate type. Then we do not have this problem and we'd have: var workflow = new Workflow().Configure() .Step().Action1() .Step("abc").Action2() .Step().Action2() .Step("def").Action1(); Which is ok but I'd like to make the step-naming optional if possible. I found this other post on SO here which looks interesting and promising. What are your opinions? I'd think the original solution is completely unacceptable or is it? By the way, those action methods will take predicates and functors and I don't think I want to take an additional parameter for naming the step there. The point of it all is, for me, is to only define these action methods in one place and one place only. So the solutions from the referenced link using generics and extension methods seem to be the best approaches so far.
