  • Disqus 2012 comments NOT being indexed by Google

    - by Buckers
We run a high-traffic website at http://www.onedirection.net and we've been using Disqus throughout this year, initially to great effect. We accepted the upgrade to Disqus 2012 back in June, loving the increased user experience and the better community feel - albeit back to an Iframe again. However the fact we were specifically told that the comments are now being indexed by Google was great, and the dynamic nature of the iFrame suited our site (all our pages are cached, so by using Disqus the comments are updated straight away). However, it seems that the Disqus 2012 comments are not being indexed, and we've noticed an obvious fall in traffic over the last few months. Initially we didn't put this down to Disqus and focused on other issues (Google algorithm updates etc). But we're quickly coming down the reasoning that our pages now contain less indexable text, and we are getting less traffic because of this. We've tried emailing Disqus directly but they're very slow and don't seem keen to help. Any thoughts on this?

  • Will Google penalize my website if I hide the H1 tag?

    - by mickburkejnr
I've read an article today where the author stated that if you put keywords on to your page but then hide them with CSS, Google will penalize your site. This make sense. This got me thinking though about my own technique when I build a website. If for example when I build a website and the logo contains the name of the website, I tend to put the name of the website in a H1 tag and then hide this tag. I don't know why I do it, I've always done it. I also include any text held in an image in the alt attribute of the img tag. But because I am hiding the H1 tag, does this leave me open to Google penalizing the website because I've hidden this one tag?

  • Figuring our complex REST queries for SharePoint

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information A little while ago, I showed the REST query for a relatively complex query. Some readers have emailed me about how to figure out further queries, and especially for complex insert/delete/update scenarios. Well it is quite easy to figure out almost any query for SharePoint REST API. Okay, this is not just about SharePoint – you can apply what you read here for any REST API interface supported by Microsoft, like WCF data services. But, sometimes when you have many columns, or complex update operations, or are working with weird providers, it is tough to figure out the specific HTTP request you need to craft, error free, using REST. Well fear not, there is hope. As an example, what I did is, I created a SharePoint site at http://sp2010.winsmarts.internal/sampledata with 3 lists in it - 1. • Shinkansen for ASP.NET MVC Now Available

While building Morts and Elvises with MVC2, I cut over Shinkansen to support MVC syntax within views and master pages. I’ve included a sample MVC project, which you can either download from Codeplex or view online: view or download source code. In either case, peek inside Site.Master and you’ll see CSS includes at the top… <%= ShinkansenMvc.Includes (c = { c.AddCss ("~/assets/css/addthis_widget.css"); c.AddCss ("/assets/css/reset.css"); c.AddCss ("assets/css/sifr.css"); ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How can I add a Google search box to my website? [migrated]

    - by wahle509
I am trying to add a Google search box to my own website. I would like it to search Google itself, not my site. There was some code I had that use to work, but no longer does: <form method="get" action="https://www.google.com/search"> <input type="text" name="g" size="31" value=""> </form> When I try making a search, it just directs to the Google homepage. Well, actually it directs here: https://www.google.com/webhp Does anyone have a different solution? What am I doing wrong?

  • Hidden text and links appearing just on click for SEO?

    - by CamSpy
I am working on a site that has neat clean/minimalistic design/layout. Menu items are "hidden" behind an icon, to see them, users need to click on that icon to get a javascript toggled overlay with the list of menu items. Then there are blocks with photos and users need to click on a small icon/button on each of them to get a block of text shown for each of the photo. While I don't like such "design" myself, making me click lots of time just to read, I also think that for SEO purpose this model is really wrong. Is such model bad for SEO? Are there ways to keep design like this but have "safe" methods of displaying text content on click that will not hurt SEO?

  • How Effective Websites Are

It's normal for just about any business or enterprise to have an online business, as well as offices and a shop front. In today's world where individuals increasingly browse the world wide web first for info, it becomes important to take care of and enhance that online presence, as it actually could make or break the traffic to an online site or even the office door. Hiring an SEO agency or guide may seem like a major decision, but the quicker you come to a decision to go for it, the better, especially if you are about to change your present website design or intending to start a fresh one.

  • IIS isn't propagating domain

    - by ErocM
I called Godaddy and 'verified' my settings for the two ips were correct. ns1.asezo.com = xx.xx.xx.15 ns2.asezo.com = xx.xx.xx.16 then I set the nameserver of asezo.com to the ns1/ns2 above, which Godaddy tech support says is right. When I try to visit my site, it says Oops! Google Chrome could not find asezo.com. When I try to ping the website, it gives me a time out. I have the bindings in IIS for the default website as: http - xx.xx.xx.15 - 80 www.asezo.com and http - xx.xx.xx.15 - 80 asezo.com And I'm still getting nothing. I can go directly to the ip http://xx.xx.xx.15/ and it gives me the IIS default website, I just can't get the url to propagate. What am I doing wrong?

  • Newbie in ASP.Net

    - by dnvThai
I am learning ASP.Net and I am confusing between ASP.Net WebPages, ASP.Net WebForms and ASP.Net MVC. I have read a lot of articles and known the simple difference of their functions, but I don't know the differences of their code. E.g: When I look at int* p = new int(); ... I know that it's C++ style. and Dim A as String it have to be Visual Basic. [?1] I'm not able to detect like that in ASP.Net. How do they different in codes? I use Visual Studio 2010 Express Edition.I like to use C# (I also was learned VisualBasic in shool, but I don't like him). When I create a new project, there're too many types of project, then, I don't know which I should choose (I just want to make a simple site). [?2] What are they used to? Thanks

  • URL parameter names being changed by user agents

    - by Mike Deck
In reviewing one of our site's web logs I'm seeing instances where we are returning a 404 to requests because we're expecting an id parameter to be sent, but instead we're seeing a di parameter. The resource in question is an image but which image file actually gets served is dependent on the id parameter. The expected url is something like http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?id=123&width=200&height=300 What I'm seeing in the logs is requests for http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?di=123&width=200&height=300 The only case where we are seeing this on the id parameter. It seems unlikely that this is due to a server side or JavaScript bug since it seems to be only effecting a small percentage of our traffic. We are seeing this across a wide variety of user agents (both mobile and desktop) and IPs. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a browser plugin or other software you're aware of that could be causing this, and if so is there a good way to work around the issue?

  • jQuery .Flv Player

    - by H(at)Ni
I've recently used a cool .Flv player to play video files that are uploaded by site admin and thought it's good to share. Download from: http://flowplayer.org/ Using this control is very simple, just follow those steps : 1. Create an anchor with href equals to the video url  <a href="Video.flv" id="MyPlayer" ></a>   2. Add path to the player's javascript file <script type="text/javascript" src="flowplayer-3.2.4.min.js"></script> 3. Simple call to a function named flowplayer with the anchor id, and path of the player's swf file     <script type="text/javascript">       $(document).ready(function () {       flowplayer("MyPlayer", "flowplayer-3.2.5.swf");       });     </script>

  • Can realtek 8192cu usb wireless card be used in ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0?

    - by waterloo2005
I do like the post RTL8188CUS Wireless USB Dongle doesn't work unless I disable wireless security . But when I plug my 8192cu usb wireless card, my computer screen is off. At that time I even can not use Alt SysRq k or Alt SysRq + reisub. I compile the latest driver of 8192cu on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-34. In RealTek site, I download 8192cu drive which is for Linux Kernel 2.6.18~2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8. But now in Ubuntu12.04 my kernel is 3.2.0-34. Every time I plug the usb 8192cu wireless card my system halts. Now I try to blacklist both the system's rtl8192cu driver and the new 8192cu driver I compile, but the system still halts when I plug the usb driver. What about you ? Thanks!

  • Which is the appropriate content-type meta tag value?

    - by Argoron
I have a question about the meta tag content-type. When starting to build my site (HTML+PHP+JS), I copied a lot of the meta tags over from elsewhere, and I have, amongst others, the following: <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="application/xhtml+xml; charset=iso-8859-1" /> Now, I've seen that tag is being used a lot with the value "text/html". I've been searching the web but could not find a comprehensive explanation regarding what the difference between both is. The "text/html" intuitively sounds more straightforward to me. Should I change my tag to that, or might the "application/xhtml+xml" be an equivalent solution ? Alternatively, can anyone point me to a resource where the different values for these tags are listed and explained in a clear manner? Thanks in advance

  • Citrix SDK: Where to start? [closed]

    - by Bob Dole
I'm needing to start hacking around the Citrix SDK and am trying to figure out where to start. I'm wanting to basically find a way to pass data from the client to the server and figure out how to open an application on the citrix client. I see there is a XenApp SDK, and Virtual Channel SDK but really don't know which one I need to start with. I have a Citrix development virtual server set up, but am unsure how to get started. Does someone know of a good site/tutorial on how to get started with the various Citrix API's quickly?

  • Blocked Sites at work (that aren't even bad)

    - by Mercfh
So here recently, i've been using google to look up information for basically random programming things (i was just hired on a month or so ago). So here recently I was actually looking up some information about RAW_SOCKETS (but thats beside the point) Anyways some of the tutorials sites/explaining how to use them and explaining the protocol sites are actually blocked. (and our manager sent out an email saying that if u run into a site just to email her just in case). Now obviously...w/e sys admins probably see these 'blocked' sites in their reports. But should I be worried? I mean....I literally am not trying to be devious Im just trying to learn stuff. I guess programming websites are sometimes labeled as "hacking". sometimes blogs get labeled like that, but alot of the time blogs have USEFUL information. This apparently happens alot of my other co-workers and they don't even bother emailing our manager.....but should I be worried? Or has this happened to you guys before?

  • Is there a way I can sort traffic by page-type based upon URL structure in Google-Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools??

    - by Felix
I have a local business directory site. I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that i can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Does Google Tag Manager help with this? Here are the two URL paths: http://www.example.com/ny/new-york/10011/ http://www.example.com/ny/new-york Thanks all!

  • What options do I have for a Wedding Car website? [on hold]

    - by David
I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. • How to prepare for an online job interview (maybe through Skype)?

    - by phunehehe
I'm applying for a company far away and if I get an interview it will probably be done remotely. I have been searching for advices regarding this but all tips seem to be directed at face-to-face meetings (things like "shake hands firmly"). What are the differences? How can I make the best out of those differences? Update: This is a software developer position, so there's also something about technical questions (such as, I can Google anything that they ask ;) This question also applies to any freelancers who are dealing with customers, or recruiters who are interviewing remotely. I hope that makes it relevant to this site. It may also help if you keep answers programers-related.

  • SEO penalty for landing page redirects

    - by therealsix
Using ebay as an example- lets say I have a large number of items whose URLs' look like this: cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1981-VW-Vanagon-manual-seats-seven-/250953153841 I want to give my client the ability to put links to these items on their website EASILY, without knowing or checking my URL. So I created a redirect service that will map their identifier with my URL: ebay.com/fake_redirect_service/shared_identifier9918 would redirect to the link above. This works great- my clients can easily setup these links with information they already have, and the user will see the page as usual. So on to the problem... I'm concerned that this redirecting service will have a negative impact on my SEO ranking. Having a landing page redirect you immediately to a different URL seems like something a typical spam site would do. Will this hurt me? Any better solutions?
