  It was really exciting weekend at Atlanta code camp 2012. This was my first code camp, I presented on “Windows Kinect for Enterprise”.   Heterogeneous data access requires having the right drivers. If you have to use 32-bit ODBC drivers, you won’t find then when you start the Microsoft ODBC Administrator because it is 64-bit. I wish the SQL Server team would give it as much love. Service Broker is a wonderful technology, let down by poor resourcing. • Silverlight Html Placeholder now support OOB mode

  With the official Silverlight 4 release this week, one of the things we introduced in the Telerik Silverlight controls is the ability to use the Html Placeholder control in OOB in the same way you do when the control is hosted in the browser. The good news is that you don't need to do anything in order to enable this feature. It comes out of the box and if you have an app that is using the HtmlPlaceholder you just need to install it in OOB mode to see the same html that you are seeing when the application is hosted in the browser.   I have created the SLI merged desktop of three 1920x1680 monitors, so the desktop resolution is 5760x1080. There is a 0x80070057 error, while calling CreateRenderTarget to create the RT_Surface: IDirect3DSurface9* _render_surface; HRESULT hr = _device->CreateRenderTarget( _desktop_width * 2, _desktop_height + 1, D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, D3DMULTISAMPLE_NONE, 0, TRUE, &_render_surface, NULL); It works OK with desktop resolution 1024x768, and the total resolution is 3072x768. In http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb174361(v=vs.85).aspx, it says If the method succeeds, the return value is D3D_OK. The best part is that the kit is now available to download in two different formats 1) Full Package (324.5 MB) and 2) Web Installer (2.4 MB). The full package enables you to download all of the hands-on labs and presentations to your local machine. The Web Installer allows you to select and download just the specific hands-on labs and presentations that you need.   I've just started learning DirectX with the book "3D Game Programming with DirectX". I just finished setting up all the paths and adding the code to the project which I think I did correctly, but I get this massive error which I don't really understand and is hard to google. Could someone tell me what it means and how to fix it? • Best/Easiest Technology for a RESTful webservice [closed]

  So I'm going to be creating a phone app + website that will need to utilize a web service. Webservices are completely outside my domain so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Does anybody have any suggestions on the technology stack I should use? (mainly in terms of ease of use and reliability) So far what I've looked at are: RoR Python + Django + TastyPie Python + Flask Microsoft WCF 3.5 PHP + some framework I would rather not do anything with Java I'm leaning towards the Python + Django + TastyPie route as it seems like it would be easy to get up and going and learn in general. My only concern with it is the reliability of the libraries (feature breaking updates, abandonment, etc). Also I would prefer to create the website with the same framework so I wouldn't have to deal with learning and using two different ones. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

• Can WinRT really be used at just the boundaries?

  Microsoft (chiefly, Herb Sutter) recommends when using WinRT with C++/CX to keep WinRT at the boundaries of the application and keep the core of the application written in standard ISO C++. I've been writing an application which I would like to leave portable, so my core functionality was written in standard C++, and I am now attempting to write a Metro-style front end for it using C++/CX. I've had a bit of a problem with this approach, however. For example, if I want to push a vector of user-defined C++ types to a XAML ListView control, I have to wrap my user-defined type in a WinRT ref/value type for it to be stored in a Vector^. With this approach, I'm inevitably left with wrapping a large portion of my C++ classes with WinRT classes. This is the first time I've tried to write a portable native application in C++. Is it really practical to keep WinRT along the boundaries like this? How else could this type of portable core with a platform-specific boundary be handled?

• MySQL vs. SQL Server Go daddy, What is the difference bewteen hosted DB and App_Data Db

  I'm using Goddady for site hosting, and I'm currently using MySQL, because there are less limits on size,etc. My question is what is the difference between using a hosted Godaddy Db such as MySQL vs. creating a SQL Serverdatabase in the the App_Data folder? My guess is security? Would it be a bad idea to use a SQL ServerDB thats located in the App_Data folder? Additional Well I am able to create a .mdf (SQL Server DB file) in the App_Data folder, but I'm really unsure if should use that or not, If I did use it it would simplify using some of the Microsoft tools. Like I said my guess is that it would be less secure, but I don't really know. I know I have a 10gb, file system limit, so I'm assuming my db would have to share that space.

• Batch file to Delete Old Virtual Directories.

  On some servers we have many old Virtual Directories created for previous versions of our application. IIS user interface allows to delete only one in a time. Fortunately we can use IIS scripts as described in How to manage Web sites and Web virtual directories by using command-line scripts in IIS 6.0 I've created batch file DeleteOldVDirs.cmd rem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816568 rem syntax: iisvdir /delete WebSite [/Virtual Path]Name [/s Computer [/u [Domain\]User /p Password]] REM list all directories and create batch of deletes iisvdir /query "Default Web Site" echo "Enter Ctrl-C  if you want to stop deleting" Pause iisvdir /delete "Default Web Site/VDirName1" iisvdir /delete "Default Web Site/VDirName2" ...   If the name of WebSite or Virtual directory contain spaces(e.g  "Default Web Site"), don't forget to use double quotes. Note that the batch doesn't delete physical directories from flie system.You need to delete them using Windows Explorer, but it does support multiple selection!
