• Multi-accordion help (CSS issue maybe?)

  So, I've been trying to develop this multi-accordion news section for this site. It's actually all working, thanks to an insightful plugin. I've modified it a little bit so it works as I want it to, but I've run into two issues, one which is possibly CSS. Issue #1: The idea for the user is that when they view this page, they see all the recent headlines. They can also see who it has been posted by and how many comments have been made to this article. If they wish, they can then click on the headline and the field will expand into the article. They can then either make a comment or view the comments via clicking the View Comments link or clicking the "number of comments" link in the "Posted by..." area (a shortcut to the comments basically). The problem I'm having is if I make the AUTHOR or the "0" comments a link, it breaks the accordion because the accordion uses an A CLASS to open it up. I'm looking for a fix, I've tried making it a H1 or a DIV but that also breaks it. Issue #2: This is a pretty picky one, but when you click the headline it expands, but at least in Firefox (haven't tested it in Chrome yet) the text jumps from the right and to the left, locking in place from which the CSS tells it to (padding-left). I don't know why it's exactly doing that, if anyone has any insight on that, it'd be appreciated. A two-parter to this issue is when you open the Headline to the article and then decide to close the article by clicking on the Headline, parts of the accordion jumps from the darker purple to the light purple before the task is finished. I'm also interested fixing this, but this issue in its entirety are all pretty nit picky things.   I am using XML file for creating Context Menu for my ListView. (Please see below). I also want to set a header for this Context Menu. Because if I, for example, read 10 bytes in reader and foo and bar are together less than 10 bytes, I will have them both in the same variable and that I do not want. Ideally I would have one read function for every variable, but again I don't know before hand how many bytes will the data have. I thought about adding another write instruction in writer.c between the write for foo and bar with a separator and then I would have no problem decoding it from reader.c. Is this the way to go about it? Thanks.

• firefox reading web page from local JS file -- access to restricted URI denied, code: 1012, nsresult

  My problem is -- I have a html file which is really JS program, which reads web pages and show them in customized manner (i.e. it displays the same content in a different way). Basically, I create XMLHttpRequest object and then req.open("GET", web_page_address, false); req.send(""); This gives me (in firefox) an error: Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Access to restricted URI denied" code: "1012" nsresult: "0x805303f4 (NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI)" I already googled, and looked at SO but all other issues are very similar with those two exceptions: the file I open in firefox is a local file, opened directly in browser -- I don't have www server running at localhost I don't have any control over the web pages I am reading stuff from So, several solutions I've seen so far (like adding PHP proxy, changing the way external server sends data) cannot be applied here. What else can be done in such case? Another story is I am wondering if such strict security for directly local file has any sense. Thank you in advance for tips/links/etc. Have a nice day!

  I have an issue where the local version of django is handling image upload as expected but my server is not. • "Exclusive" DirectDraw palette isn't actually exclusive

  We're maintaining an old video game that uses a full-screen 256-color graphics mode with DirectDraw. The problem is, some applications running in the background sometimes try to change the system palette while the game is running, which results in corrupted graphics. We can (sometimes) detect when this happens by processing the WM_PALETTECHANGED message. A few update versions ago we added logging (just log the window title/class/process name), which helped users identify offending applications and close them. MSN Live Messenger was a common culprit. The problem got worse when we found out that Windows Vista (and 7) does it "by itself". The WM_PALETTECHANGED parameters point towards CSRSS and the desktop window. In Vista, a workaround that often worked was to open any folder (Computer, Documents, etc.) and leave it open while running the game. Sounds ridiculous, but it worked - in most cases. In Windows 7, not even this workaround worked any more. Users found that stopping some services (Windows Update and the indexing service) also resolved the problem on some configurations. Some time ago I just started trying random things in hope of finding a solution. I found that setting the GDI palette (using Create/SelectPalette) before setting the DirectDraw palette (using IDirectDrawPalette::SetEntries) would restore the palette after it became corrupted (WM_PALETTECHANGED handler). SetSystemPaletteUse and calling SetPalette on the primary surface helped some more. However, there is still perceivable flickering when an application tries to steal the palette, which is especially prominent during fades. Question: is there a way to get a "real" exclusive palette, which completely disallows other applications changing the Windows palette as long as our game retains focus?

• When I try to run vim in command line I get Python errors

  When I try running vim in the Terminal (so as to follow @romainl's suggestion in my other question) I get lots of Python errors, which all boil down to: IOError: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/include/python2.7/pyconfig.h (No such file or directory) Why is this? I can use Python or Sublime Text even, without any problems. • Comet, responseText and memory usage

  Is there a way to clear out the responseText of an XHR object without destroying the XHR object? I need to keep a persistent connection open to a web server to feed live data to a browser. The problem is, there is a relatively large amount of data coming through (several hundred K per second constantly), so memory usage is a big problem, because this connection must remain open for at least several minutes. responseText gets very big very quickly, even though the JSON I send back has been crunched as small as it can get. Due to the way the server-side app works, if I use AJAX-style short polling and just destroy the XHR object when I'm done with it, I miss significant amounts of important data even in the few milliseconds it takes to parse the response, create a new XHR and send it out. I do not have the option to use overlapping requests, as the web server only accepts one connection at a time. (Don't ask.) So Comet is exactly the model I need. What I would like to do is parse each JSON chunk as it comes back from the server, and then clear out responseText so that I can keep using the same connection. However, responseText is read-only. It cannot be directly emptied by any method I have found. Is there a part of the picture I am missing here? Does anyone know any tricks I can use to free up responseText when I'm done reading it? Or is there another place the server responses can go? I am not including code because this is really almost a code-agnostic question. The Javascript routines that spawn the XHRs and handle the returned data are very, very simple.

• SQL Server 2000 intermittent connection exceptions on production server - specific environment probl

  We've been having intermittent problems causing users to be forcibly logged out of out application. Our set-up is ASP.Net/C# web application on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SQL Server 2000 on the back end. We've recently performed a major product upgrade on our client's VMWare server (we have a guest instance dedicated to us) and whereas we had none of these issues with the previous release the added complexity that the new upgrade brings to the product has caused a lot of issues. We are also running SQL Server 2000 (build 8.00.2039, or SP4) and the IIS/ASP.NET (.Net v2.0.50727) application on the same box and connecting to each other via a TCP/IP connection. Primarily, the exceptions being thrown are: System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Cannot find table 0. System.ArgumentException: Column 'password' does not belong to table Table. [This exception occurs in the log in script, even though there is clearly a password column available] System.InvalidOperationException: There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first. [This one is occurring very regularly] System.InvalidOperationException: This SqlTransaction has completed; it is no longer usable. System.ApplicationException: ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is connecting. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. And just today, for the first time: System.Web.UI.ViewStateException: Invalid viewstate. We have load tested the app using the same number of concurrent users as the production server and cannot reproduce these errors. They are very intermittent and occur even when there are only 8/9/10 user connections. My gut is telling me its ASP.NET - SQL Server 2000 connection issues.. We've pretty much ruled out code-level Data Access Layer errors at this stage (we've a development team of 15 experienced developers working on this) so we think its a specific production server environment issue.

• How to poll a file in /sys

  Hi, I am stuck reading a file in /sys/ which contains the light intensity in Lux of the ambient light sensor on my Nokia N900 phone. See thread on talk.maemo.org here I tried to use pyinotify to poll the file but this looks some kind of wrong to me since the file is alway "process_IN_OPEN", "process_IN_ACCESS" and "process_IN_CLOSE_NOWRITE" I basically want to get the changes ASAP and if something changed trigger an event, execute a class... • The worker processcalls OpenSubKey but returns null by accessing Remote Registry service.

  My web server is deployed in IIS 6. The web server starts the Remote Registry service in the remote machine successfully by creating a process to run some remote operation commands. This first line runs successfully. But the second line returns null. #1 RegistryKey remoteRegKey = RegistryKey.OpenRemoteBaseKey(RegistryHive.LocalMachine, "139.24.185.27"); #2 RegistryKey targetKey = remoteRegKey.OpenSubKey(@"SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\XXXX\XXXX\Config\Modality", true); I tried to find the reason from MSDN. It tells only one case it would return null. The case is when the subkey does not exist. If it has not enough permission, it will throw exception. But the subkey really exists. I change another machine to debug my code with Visual Studio 2008. It can run two lines successfully. If it has enough permission, it should not only can open the LocalMachine, but also can open any of its subkeys. I am quite confusing about this.

• How can I convert a bunch of files from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 using Perl?

  I have several documents I need to convert from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8 (without the BOM of course). This is the issue though. I have so many of these documents (it is actually a mix of documents, some UTF-8 and some ISO-8859-1) that I need an automated way of converting them. Unfortunately I only have ActivePerl installed and don't know much about encoding in that language. I may be able to install PHP, but I am not sure as this is not my personal computer. Just so you know, I use Scite or Notepad++, but both do not convert correctly. For example, if I open a document in Czech that contains the character "ž" and go to the "Convert to UTF-8" option in Notepad++, it incorrectly converts it to an unreadable character. There is a way I CAN convert them, but it is tedious. If I open the document with the special characters and copy the document to Windows clipboard, then paste it into a UTF-8 document and save it, it is okay. This is too tedious (opening every file and copying/pasting into a new document) for the amount of documents I have. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

• Intercepting hyperlinks in an embedded Word document

  Hello, I'm working on an app which uses embedded Word documents. We have a feature which allows them to insert a small clickable image into the doc - when the user clicks on it, we want the app to open another window based on some data specified by the user when the image was added. What the application does now is: When the image is inserted, the app creates a hyperlink for it and the data is used as the link destination The user ctrl+clicks on the image and the Word document the WindowSelectionChange event The app handles the WindowSelectionChange event and goes to open the specified window This approach worked fine with previous versions, when we had the 11.0 / Word 2003 interop dll's. We upgraded to 12.0/Word 2007 for the upcoming release, and in many cases the event is not firing when I click on the image - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and I'm descending into the cargo-cult world trying to figure out why - sometimes saving and re-opening the document works, sometimes killing the Word process and starting a new one fixes (or breaks) the feature. My guess is there's something going wrong with the WinSelChg event, but I'm not sure what. The usual process we have for applying the event handler is: try //remove the old one if any { ((Document)myAXFramerControl.ActiveDocument).Application.WindowSelectionChange -= new ApplicationEvents4_WindowSelectionChangeEventHandler(WSC_eventhandlerfunction); } catch{} ((Document)myAXFramerControl.ActiveDocument).Application.WindowSelectionChange += new ApplicationEvents4_WindowSelectionChangeEventHandler(WSC_eventhandlerfunction); Sometimes one or both of these will throw exceptions - usually a NullReferenceException when removing the handler. Adding the handler sometimes throws the "com object that has been separated from its underlying rcw cannot be used" exception, which I don't understand at all - my impression was that this only occurs when you, say, store a reference to the Word application or document and try to use it later. As it stands the WSC event handler is frequently never run; while I'm happy to fiddle with the app until it works once I can't really expect the same of the users who have been happily using this feature for a while now. Any ideas?

So with the 'x' you can represent 'islands' on the map. xxx.x...xxxxx xxxx....x...x ........x.x.x ..xxxxx.x...x ..x...x.xxx.x ..x.x.x...x.. ..x...x...xxx ...xxxxxx.... x............ As you can see, there are some islands which are closed, i.e. if some boat is inside its territory, it won't be able to get out, for ex: ..xxxxx. ..x...x. ..x.x.x. ..x...x. ..xxxxx. And there are some open islands which is possible to get out of them, ex: .xxxxx .x...x .x.x.x .xxx.x The problem is this: For a given NxM map like those above, calculate howm any of the islands are open, and how many are closed. I repeat: I don't want you to solve it, just need some sugestions, ideas for solving. thanks

• Google Maps API V3: How to jump to a specific marker from outside the map?

  I have a map with two markers on it. The initial view of the map only shows one marker, and I want to provide a link next to the map that will move the map to the 2nd marker when clicked. • MS SQL : Can you help me with this query?

  I want to run a diagnostic report on our MS SQL 2008 database server. I am looping through all of the databases, and then for each database, I want to look at each table. But, when I go to look at each table (with tbl_cursor), it always picks up the tables in the database 'master'. • php user authentication libraries / frameworks ... what are the options?

  I am using PHP and the codeigniter framework for a project I am working on, and require a user login/authentication system. For now I'd rather not use SSL (might be overkill and the fact that I am using shared hosting discourages this). I have considered using openID but decided that since my target audience is generally not technical, it might scare users away (not to mention that it requires mirroring of login information etc.). I know that I could write a hash based authentication (such as sha1) since there is no sensitive data being passed (I'd compare the level of sensitivity to that of stackoverflow). That being said, before making a custom solution, it would be nice to know if there are any good libraries or packages out there that you have used to provide semi-secure authentication? I am new to codeigniter, but something that integrates well with it would be preferable. Any ideas? (i'm open to criticism on my approach and open to suggestions as to why I might be crazy not to just use ssl). Thanks in advance. Update: I've looked into some of the suggestions. I am curious to try out zend-auth since it seems well supported and well built. Does anyone have experience with using zend-auth in codeigniter (is it too bulky?) and do you have a good reference on integrating it with CI? I do not need any complex authentication schemes..just a simple login/logout/password-management authorization system. Also, dx_auth seems interesting as well, however I am worried that it is too buggy. Has anybody else had success with this? I realized that I would also like to manage guest users (i.e. users that do not login/register) in a similar way to stackoverflow..so any suggestions that have this functionality would be great
