How to Clean Up and Fix Your Music Library with the MusicBrainz Database

Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface. Researching runtime technologies (Xmas fun with HTML5)

The Internet Explorer 9.0 team just posted about Pirates love Daises. This is a showcase game for the power of HTML 5 running inside IE 9.0 – and the author has done a fantastic job (you can get more details from Grant’s blog post). A game developer is an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) – a B2C ISV. In my role I don’t (typically) work with B2C ISVs, hence a reasonable question is “Why blog about it?”. I think applications like this demonstrate the power of HTML 5 and IE9 for delivering really rich user experiences which have the promise of working cross browser and cross platform - in the future as HTML5 capable browsers become the norm. Microsoft is investing heavily in implementing a great “run time” in IE9 if cross platform is an important requirement for your UX. And the other reason for blogging this… it is nearly Xmas and we all should be having a little more fun on the run in. Visual Query Builder

If been using "dbForge Query Builder" lately and I'm gotten used to the ease of building and testing a query, specially for those complex ones with inner joins, aliases and multiple conditionals. The expiry date of the trial is about to come, and while wanting to remain on the legal side for this I'd rather not pay the 50USD it costs (although I must say it's pretty cheap for what it does). So my question would be: Are there any free alternatives to replace this visual query builder? I've failed to find any and fear that my only two options are paying for it, or going to the dark side.

Should I convert my AAC M4A files to MP3?

Due to Apple, I have a large majority of my music files in the AAC M4A format. They do NOT have DRM so I don't have to worry about that. I'm getting tired of Apple products and really want to switch to a different brand player (and something more compatible with Linux). It appears most MP3 players support...well...MP3 and not AAC. Should I convert my library to be free of Apple and open to other players? Is this a lossless conversion? Can it be lossless? If I will lose quality, I'm not interested. Am I even doing the right thing? AAC is the better format, but I'm not seeing a lot of support for it yet. I'll be honest and say that I need some education in this department. Any helpful advice is most welcome.

How can I make WinXP bind to ports other than 1025-5000 for outgoing TCP connections?

(I originally posted a similar question on StackOverflow but readers recommended I post here instead) When you create outgoing TCP connections, most applications let the operating system choose which port to use. Most OSes use the IANA recommended dynamic port range of 49152-65535 for this purpose. But in Windows 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft uses ports 1025-5000. Microsoft lets you change the high end of this range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. I need to have port 4160 free for incoming connections and on rare occasions an outgoing connection steals that port from me before I bind that port.

Is inline SQL still classed as bad practice now that we have Micro ORMs?

This is a bit of an open ended question but I wanted some opinions, as I grew up in a world where inline SQL scripts were the norm, then we were all made very aware of SQL injection based issues, and how fragile the sql was when doing string manipulations all over the place. Then came the dawn of the ORM where you were explaining the query to the ORM and letting it generate its own SQL, which in a lot of cases was not optimal but was safe and easy. Another good thing about ORMs or database abstraction layers were that the SQL was generated with its database engine in mind, so I could use Hibernate/Nhibernate with MSSQL, MYSQL and my code never changed it was just a configuration detail. Now fast forward to current day, where Micro ORMs seem to be winning over more developers I was wondering why we have seemingly taken a U-Turn on the whole in-line sql subject. I must admit I do like the idea of no ORM config files and being able to write my query in a more optimal manner but it feels like I am opening myself back up to the old vulnerabilities such as SQL injection and I am also tying myself to one database engine so if I want my software to support multiple database engines I would need to do some more string hackery which seems to then start to make code unreadable and more fragile. (Just before someone mentions it I know you can use parameter based arguments with most micro orms which offers protection in most cases from sql injection) So what are peoples opinions on this sort of thing? I am using Dapper as my Micro ORM in this instance and NHibernate as my regular ORM in this scenario, however most in each field are quite similar. What I term as inline sql is SQL strings within source code. There used to be design debates over SQL strings in source code detracting from the fundamental intent of the logic, which is why statically typed linq style queries became so popular its still just 1 language, but with lets say C# and Sql in one page you have 2 languages intermingled in your raw source code now. Just to clarify, the SQL injection is just one of the known issues with using sql strings, I already mention you can stop this from happening with parameter based queries, however I highlight other issues with having SQL queries ingrained in your source code, such as the lack of DB Vendor abstraction as well as losing any level of compile time error capturing on string based queries, these are all issues which we managed to side step with the dawn of ORMs with their higher level querying functionality, such as HQL or LINQ etc (not all of the issues but most of them). So I am less focused on the individual highlighted issues and more the bigger picture of is it now becoming more acceptable to have SQL strings directly in your source code again, as most Micro ORMs use this mechanism. Excluding e-mail them to my Kindle as a personal document as a method (the total size is more than 5 GB, the space provided by Amazon), is there any way to transfer these books to my Kindle App on my Nexus 7 (Android Tablet). I have the Kindle App version 3.1.7 I've already seen the question Can I sync books I didn't buy from Amazon via Kindle app? but that is not the answer I'm looking for. Thanks

Central Ohio Day of .Net 2010 Slides and Files

This weekend I presented my “The Power of PowerShell + SharePoint 2007” session at the Central Ohio Day of .Net conference in Wilmington, OH this weekend. This is the second year I’ve attended this conference, first time as a presenter. For those unfamiliar Day of .Net conferences are a one-day conference on all things .NET organized by developers for developers. These events are usually offered at no cost to anyone interested in .NET development. The attendees of my session had some great questions and I hope they all got something worthwhile out of it. Logical progressions through the job market

I'm 5 years out of a unrecognised university where I did Software Engineering. First job was VB.NET, one job was Python, Linux and Web development. I feel cast as a web developer. I'd love a role doing C but no one is interested in juniors if the applicant hasn't got 3 years of C development experience already. I've done some C and a drop of open source coding but I'll never have the confidence to convince someone I know absolutely what I'm doing. Do I just spend more and more time letting life pass me by as I sit in my room on a friday night writing a C problem "for the sake of learning more C" Basically I'm just not sure I want to continue my career if it's going to involve nothing but high level, machine abstracted, business logic and as interested as I am in low level development and enjoy reading books by Taunembaum I struggle to see how I can make the jump and I just feel life would be easier if I got a job in a cafe in Amsterdam rolling spliffs for customers. My ideal job, being a paid member of the Fedora development team seems so far away, without anyone to pay me to learn the skills to get there, and the only way would be to literally spend weeks and weeks of my life contributing code without recognition for free and without any guarentees at the end. Not that I've contributed anything at all so far. Are there any career paths that are logically set out so that jumping between roles is "correctly" incremental and where hard work and learning does eventually lead to the kind of places I might want to go? [ and also getting paid at the same time? ]

Does it make sense to develop open source python library for database inspection?

Some time ago I came up with an idea for a library for database inspection. I started developing it and got some very basic functionality, just to check if that's possible. Recently however, I get second thoughts, whether such project would really be useful. I am actually planning to develop following software suite: library for python, that would provide easy interface to inspect database structure, desktop application in PyQt that would use the interface to provide graphical database inspection, web application in Django that would use the interface to provide database inspection through the browser. Do you think such suite would be useful for other developers/database administrators/analysts? I know, that there is pgadmin for PostgreSQL and some tool for sqlite3 and that there is Java tool called DBInspect. Usually I would be against creating new tool and rather join existing project, but I am not Java programmer (and I would rather stick to python or C, which I like) and none of these projects provide a library for database inspection. Anyway I would like to hear some opinions from fellow developers, whether such project make sense or I should try to spend my free time on developing something else.

Move files and resize partition automatically?

I'm in a bit of an odd situation. I've recently been working on switching from debian to arch, and I've got my home partition for both pointing to the same partition (different usernames, so that's not an issue). What I want to do is one of two things, either: Set up user on arch with same username and group as debian, and have everything just sort of work! OR Move files I'd like to share between home folders to their own partition, and mount it with fstab. For the second one, I have around 150gb of files that would need moved to their own partition, and i've got about 15gb of free space on my home partition. So what I'd want to do is somehow make a 10gb ext4 partition, move 10gb-ish of files, expand the partition again, move files again, etc until all the files are moved to their own partition. I can do it manually, but it'd be easier if I could say "Move 10GB-ish of files from here to there, and then resize it and repeat until I'm out of files". Is that even possible?

Myvidoop error when trying to log in

Recently I have not been able to get into my myvidoop username. It won't even bring up the pictures and asks to send the access code to one of my email addresses. I have seen this message before and there was no error previously but now it will not send the access code. I've tried accessing the site through firefox and through IE but I get the same thing (whether I went through the add on to get to the site or just typed in the website). I just want to know if I possibly have something that could be blocking it from sending this out. I use the free version of Avira for protection, run Ad Muncher (but I've also tried to get this access code with Ad Muncher closed), and have Ad Block Pro plugin (but like I've said before, the same thing happens in IE). I know it uses Java to send this access code out and I've even updated Java but still cannot get it to send it to me.

Installing Exchange 2010 Error with Ipv6 disabled/enabled

I've tried installing Exchange 2010 on Windows 2k8 R2. Following error occurred when installing Hub Transport Role. Hub Transport Role Failed Error: The following error was generated when "$error.Clear(); install-ExsetdataAtom -AtomName SharedMachineSettings -DomainController $RoleDomainController" was run: "An error occurred with error code '2147950640' and message 'There is no such object on the server.'.". An error occurred with error code '2147950640' and message 'There is no such object on the server.' I have tried installation with both IPV6 turned on and off. Both failed and both required me to do some magic to uninstall Exchange, and try installation again. Feel free to shoot your ideas what can be done to resolve the error. In the end I will install HyperV and put Exchange 2010 on different server but that's not what the server owner wanted.
