• Avoid IF statement after condition has been met

  I have a division operation inside a cycle that repeats many times. It so happens that in the first few passes through the loop (more or less first 10 loops) the divisor is zero. Once it gains value, a div by zero error is not longer possible. I have an if condition to test the divisor value in order to avoid the div by zero, but I am wondering that there is a performance impact that evaluating this if will have for each run in subsequent loops, especially since I know it's of no use anymore. How should this be coded? in Python?

• Detecting GWT RichTextArea 'dirty' state

  I want to detect when the contents of my GWT RichTextArea become 'dirty' (have been changed by the user) in order to enable a 'save' button accordingly. I suppose I could listen for key presses that are likely to have changed the contents; but browser support for key presses is notoriously quirky. I suppose I could, before editing begins, save the original contents in a variable, and upon key press, compare the current contents against that variable, but doing that on each key press is going to be really slow. Is there some neat way to achieve RichTextArea dirty-detection?

  I have a person class with two properties, Name an Age. I know how to use databinding to display a collection of person in a wpf list box and how to modify the listitemtemplate to customize how each person is displayed. Now I'd like to number each person on the list according to the order they appear on the list (which could change as the the items were sorted via name or age in the display). • Getting value from key pair value into appended property using jQuery

  How do I get the value from a key pair value into the rel property of an anchor tag? When I split the code to put the value in the correct place it doesn't work, the end of the a tag would appear on screen instead value wouldn't be applied. When I look at the resulting code in console in Firebug the rel and href swapped order so the rel is first. The 'key' should be and is in the correct location but the 'value' needs to be applied to the rel attribute. • Copying data from STDOUT to a remote machine using SFTP

  In order to backup large database partitions to a remote machine using SFTP, I'd like to use the databases dump command and send it directly over using SFTP to a remote location. This is useful when needing to dump large data sets when you don't have enough local disk space to create the backup file, and then copy it to a remote location. I've tried using python + paramiko which provides this functionality, but the performance much worse than using the native openssh/sftp binary to transfer files. Does anyone have any idea on how to do this either with the native sftp client on linux, or some library like paramiko? (but one that performs close to the native sftp client)?

• Marionette multi user/roles application

  I have to build a pretty complex application using Backbone Marionette. The user interface has to handle multiple users with different roles. For example the 'admin' user will see the complete menu whereas the 'guest' user will access a subset of the same menu. Moreover some views will be accessible to all the users but the functions inside them (add, edit, delete) need to be profiled on the different roles. I am not sure about the right approach to use in order to solve this issue. I could have different templates for the different roles but in this case plenty of code will be duplicated inside them. Is there any best practice (or maybe some example) to sort my problem out using Marionette? Thanks in advance, Fabrizio

  I'm attempting to improve the usability of a client's SharePoint deployment via JQuery; and am hitting a brick wall when trying to find any sort of documentation of what's happening in core.js (aside from painfully digging through and trying to parse any sort of meaning out of it --all 250kb of it!!!!--) Anyone have any pointers, or documentation? EDIT: Sorry, to clarify my question, i'm familiar with using JQuery with SharePoint. My question involves hooking JQuery into SharePoint's own client API. My question is inspired by this post http://www.codefornuts.com/2009/09/forcing-sharepoint-into-asynchronous.html# ; where the author is overriding methods such as "SubmitFormPost" and "STSNavigate" in order to make the UI interaction more "AJAXy".

  I have a datagridview in a windows form with 3 columns: Serial number, Name and Date-Time. The Name column will always have either of the two values: "name1" or "name2". I need to sort these columns such that the grid displays all the rows with name values in a specific order (first display all the "name1" rows and then all the "name2" rows). Within the "name1" rows, I want the rows to be sorted by the Date-Time. Please note programmatically, all the 3 columns are strings. • What goes between SQL Server and Client?

  This question is an updated version of a previous question I have asked on here. I am new to client-server model with SQL Server as the relational database. I have read that public access to SQL Server is not secure. If direct access to the database is not a good practice, then what kind of layer should be placed between the server and the client? Note that I have a desktop application that will serve as the client and a remote SQL Server database that will provide data to the client. The client will input their username and password in order to see their data. I have heard of terms like VPN, ISA, TMG, Terminal Services, proxy server, and so on. I need a fast and secure n-tier architecture. P.S. I have heard of web services in front of the database. Can I use WCF to retrieve, update, insert data? Would it be a good approach in terms of security and performance?

• Surface Detection in 2d Game?

  I'm working on a 2D Platform game, and I was wondering what's the best (performance-wise) way to implement Surface (Collision) Detection. So far I'm thinking of constructing a list of level objects constructed of a list of lines, and I draw tiles along the lines. ( http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/1704/lines.png ). I'm thinking every object holds the ID of the surface that he walks on, in order to easily manipulate his y position while walking up/downhill. Something like this: //Player/MovableObject class MoveLeft() { this.Position.Y = Helper.GetSurfaceById(this.SurfaceId).GetYWhenXIs(this.Position.X) } So the logic I use to detect "droping/walking on surface" is a simple point (player's lower legs)-touches-line (surface) check (with some safety approximation - let`s say 1-2 pixels over the line). Is this approach OK? I`ve been having difficulty trying to find reading material for this problem, so feel free to drop links/advice.

• I am looking for an actual functional web browser type control for .NET, maybe a C++ LIBRARY#$??$?

  I am trying to emulate a web browser in order to execute JavaScript code and then parse the DOM. The System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser object does not give me the functionality I need. It let's me set the headers, but you cannot set the proxy or clear cookies. Well you can, but it is not ideal and messes with IE's settings. I've been extending the WebBrowser control pinvoking native windows functions so far, but it is really one hack on top of another. I can mess with the proxy and also clear cookies and such, but this control has its issues as I mentioned. I found something called WebKit .NET (http://webkitdotnet.sourceforge.net/), but I don't see support for setting proxies or cookie manipulation. Can someone recommend a c++/.NET/whatever library to do this: Basically tell me what I need to do to get an interface to similar this in .NET: string FetchBrowserParsedHtml(Uri url, WebProxy p, int timeoutSeconds, byte[] headers, byte[] postdata); void ClearCookies(); I am not responsible for my actions.

  Hi. I am working to implement a dataconnection between my C# application and an Sql Express database. Please bear in mind I have not worked with Sql queries before. I have the following relevant tables: ArticlesCommon ArticlesLocalized CategoryCommon CategoryLocalized where ArticlesCommon holds language independent information such as price, weight etc. This is the statement for now: SELECT * FROM ArticlesCommon INNER JOIN ArticlesLocalized ON ArticlesCommon.ID = ArticlesLocalized.ID WHERE ArticlesLocalized.Language = @language ORDER BY ArticlesCommon.DateAdded ArticlesCommon contains a category id for each row. Now, I want to use this to look up the localized information in CategoryLocalized and add it to the result, something like SELECT *, CategoryLocalized.Name as CategoryName. • Windows Phone 8 Announcement

  As if the Surface announcement on Monday wasn’t exciting enough, today Microsoft announce that Windows Phone 8 will be coming this fall.  That itself is great news, but the features coming were like confetti flying in all different directions.  Given this speed I couldn’t capture every feature they covered.  A summary of what I did capture is listed below starting with their eight main features. Common Core The first thing that they covered is that Windows Phone 8 will share a core OS with Windows 8.  It will also run natively on multiple cores.  They mentioned that they have run it on up to 64 cores to this point.  The phones as you might expect will at least start as dual core.  If you remember there were metrics saying that Windows Phone 7 performed operations faster on a single core than other platforms did with dual cores.  The metrics they showed here indicate that Windows Phone 8 runs faster on comparable dual core hardware than other platforms. New Screen Resolutions Screen resolution has never been an issue for me, but it has been a criticism of Windows Phone 7 in the media.  Windows Phone 8 will supports three screen resolutions: WVGA 800 x 480, WXGA 1280 x 768, and 720 1280x720.  Hopefully this makes pixel counters a little happier. MicroSD Support This was one of my pet peeves when I got my Samsung Focus. With Windows Phone 8 the operating system will support adding MicroSD cards after initial setup.  Of course this is dependent on the hardware company on implementing it, but I think we have seen that even feature phone manufacturers have not had a problem supporting this in the past. NFC NFC has been an anticipated feature for some time.  What Microsoft showed today included the fact that they didn’t just want it to be for the phone.  There is cross platform NFC functionality between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  The demos , while possibly a bit fanciful, showed would could be achieved even in a retail environment.  We are getting closer and closer to a Minority Report world with these technologies. Wallet Windows Phone 8 isn’t the first platform to have a wallet concept.  What they have done to differentiate themselves is to make it sot that it is not dependent on a SIM type chip like other platforms.  They have also expanded the concept beyond just banks to other types of credits such as airline miles. Nokia Mapping People have been envious of the Lumia phones having the Nokia mapping software.  Now all Windows Phone 8 devices will use NavTeq data and will have the capability to run in an offline fashion.  This is a major step forward from the Bing “touch for the next turn” maps. IT Administration The lack of features for enterprise administration and deployment was a complaint even before the Windows Phone 7 was released.  With the Windows Phone 8 release such features as Bitlocker and Secure boot will be baked into the OS. We will also have the ability to privately sign and distribute applications. Changing Start Screen Joe Belfiore made a big deal about this aspect of the new release.  Users will have more color themes available to them and the live tiles will be highly customizable. You will have the ability to resize and organize the tiles in a more dynamic way.  This allows for less important tiles or ones with less information to be made smaller.  And There Is More So what other tidbits came out of the presentation?  Later this summer the API for WP8 will be available.  There will be developer events coming to a city near you.  Another announcement of interest to developers is the ability to write applications at a native code level.  This is a boon for game developers and those who need highly efficient applications. As a topper on the cake there was mention of in app payment. On the consumer side we also found out that all updates will be available over the air.  Along with this came the fact that Microsoft will support all devices with updates for at least 18 month and you will be able to subscribe for early updates.  Update coming for Windows Phone 7.5 customers to WP7.8.  The main enhancement will be the new live tile features.  The big bonus is that the update will bypass the carriers.  I would assume though that you will be brought up to date with all previous patches that your carrier may not have released. • MySQL get row closest to NOW()

  I have a table with User data such as name, address etc and another table which has a paragraph of text about the user. The reason that they are separate is because we need to record all the old about data. So if the user changes their paragraph - the old one should still be stored. Each bit of about data has a primary key aboutMeID. What I want to do is have a join that pulls their name, address etc and the latest bit of aboutMe data from the other table. I am not sure though how I can order the join to only get the latest about me data. Can someone help?

  I'm trying to create SELECT statement with a GROUP BY clause, which should return "default values". Imagine the following simple MySQL table: CREATE TABLE `tracker` ( `id` INTEGER PRIMARY KEY auto_increment, `date` DATETIME NOT NULL, `customer_id` INTEGER NOT NULL ); The table contains only one record: INSERT INTO `tracker` (`date`, `customer_id`) VALUES('2010-05-03', 1); After wards I'm executing the following SQL query: SELECT DATE(`date`), COUNT(customer_id) FROM tracker WHERE DATE(`date`) >= '2010-05-01' AND DATE(`date`) <= '2010-05-05' GROUP BY DATE(`date`) ORDER BY DATE(`date`); And get the expected result set: +----+---------------------+-------------+ | id | date | customer_id | +----+---------------------+-------------+ | 1 | 2010-05-10 00:00:00 | 1 | +----+---------------------+-------------+ However, I would like the result set to look like this: +--------------+--------------------+ | DATE(`date`) | COUNT(customer_id) | +--------------+--------------------+ | 2010-05-01 | 0 | | 2010-05-02 | 0 | | 2010-05-03 | 1 | | 2010-05-04 | 0 | | 2010-05-05 | 0 | +--------------+--------------------+ Is it possible to achieve this behavior?

• Web Search API which allows automated queries

  I need to develop a java desktop application which sends queries to a search engine in order to obtain the very first highest ranked pages (Example: the first 4 pages only). Some heavy processing needs to be performed on the retrieved pages, so the time between a query and another won't be less then a minute. I would like to know whether there is any web search API for java, suitable for my situation, i.e. which allows the use of automated queries? (since in my case, the queries are generated programatically, and not through user interaction) I have checked Google's AJAX Search API and also Yahoo's Search Boss, however they only allow queries triggered by direct user interaction.
