• Umbraco on Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception: [HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required. The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level. How do I fix this?

• Weblogic Threads Usage

  I have an application deployed on WebLogic 10.3, which exhibits a strange behavior. I am running a constant (not too high) load on my application (20 concurrent users, running a light activity). The response time is reasonable (well below 100ms after the application stabilizes) Memory consumption seems fine (My application creates a lot of short-living objects, but they are garbaged collected so the overall memory consumption stays under 500 mb). Threads stats seem healthy as well: And yet, after I leave my test running for a while, more and more execute threads ("[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'") are created, until eventually the application crashes: This test hasn't been running for a long time (All the new threads that you don't see in the first screenshot were created while I was writing this question), and I've seen much more threads being created. Any idea why these threads are being created?

• Bitmap Font Displays in Center Always Without Coding it Manually (Fix Coordinate Problem onText)

  Is there a way on how to stay the texts in center without manually coding it or something, especially when making an update? I'm making a display for the highest score. Let's say that the score is 9. However, if the score is 9,999,999, the text displays still only at the fixed X and Y coordinate. Is there really a way to stay the text in center especially when there is changes when a player beats the new world record? Here's my code inside Sprite Batch: font.setScale(1.5f); font.draw(batch, "HIGHEST SCORE:", (900/10)*1 + 60, (1280/16)*10); font.draw(batch, "" + 9999999 + "", (900/10)*4, (1280/16)*8); batch.draw(grid_guide, 0, 0, 900, 1280); // --> For testing purpose only. // Where 9999999 is a new record score for example. Here's the image shown as example. I add it some red grid so that I could check if the display of score when updated will always display on center no matter how many digits takes place in. However, it is fixed, so I have to figure it out how to display it automatically on center regardless of the number of digits while updating for the new highscore. I have used the LibGDX preferences very well though to save and load records for the highscore.

• Active Directory Profile Slows down machine

  I have a strange issue with an Active Directory profile. When the user logs onto a machine with his profile, the whole machine becomes incredibly slow and unresponsive, with programs hanging and taking an age to load everything. If I log into the same machine with any other profile nothing happens. I took a look at his original profile, any start up programs, login scripts, etc and could not see what could be causing this. The machine is not running out of memory or CPU. Nothing strange is appearing in the event log and I can see nothing running under his profile which may cause this. So I created the user a new profile to test this on and exactly the same thing happens on the first login. The only thing which would of been carried across is the security groups the user is assigned to, yet I have other users with the same groups who do not experience these issues so I am now at a complete loss on where to go next!

• If the model is validating the data, shouldn't it throw exceptions on bad input?

  Reading this SO question it seems that throwing exceptions for validating user input is frowned upon. But who should validate this data? In my applications, all validations are done in the business layer, because only the class itself really knows which values are valid for each one of its properties. If I were to copy the rules for validating a property to the controller, it is possible that the validation rules change and now there are two places where the modification should be made. Is my premise that validation should be done on the business layer wrong? • Mixing JavaFX, HTML 5, and Bananas with the NetBeans Platform

  The banana in the image below can be dragged. Whenever the banana is dropped, the current date is added to the viewer: What's interesting is that the banana, and the viewer that contains it, is defined in HTML 5, with the help of a JavaScript and CSS file. The HTML 5 file is embedded within the JavaFX browser, while the JavaFX browser is embedded within a NetBeans TopComponent class. The only really interesting thing is how drop events of the banana, which is defined within JavaScript, are communicated back into the Java class. Here's how, i.e., in the Java class, parse the HTML's DOM tree to locate the node of interest and then set a listener on it. (In this particular case, the event listener adds the current date to the InstanceContent which is in the Lookup.) • Joomla 1.6 site cannot add a new extension through admin interface

  I'm having a very frustrating problem with my Joomla 1.6 site. I cannot add any new extensions through the admin interface. I have tried to upload the extension, or to use the search folder option or even the direct link. Neither of these options work, and all that happens is that the page tries to load forever until it finally timesout with a blank white page (no further error messages). I have tried this with multiple browsers (Chrome,FF,IE) and I have tried it with different extensions (modules, components, templates - all the same result). So I don't think it has anything to do with what I am uploading, but more likely the problem is something with the post action. I have also seen the exact same error occur when I try to update menu items or even create new menu items. I am not getting this error with a duplicate of the site in the dev environment, but only get this on my shared web hosting live server. This is on a Windows IIS / PHP / mySQL environment. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Google Analytics: How long does it take users to trigger an event

  I implemented Google Analytics event tracking on my currency conversion website. The typical user flow is: User lands on a page about two currencies. User enters an amount to be converted. The site shows the user the value in the other currency. The JavaScript sends Google Analytics an "converted" event when the currency conversion is done. Because most of the sessions on my site are single page, the event tracking is very important to me to be able to know if users find my page useful. I'm looking for a way to be able to figure out how long it typically takes users to enter a value in the form. I expect that this data would form a bell curve with around a specific amount of time after page load. If I can't get a graph, I could make do with a median value. I would like to be able to use this as a core metric around usability testing. Is there a way to get this information out of Google Analytics?

• Rebuild an existing Rackspace server from scratch?

  In the process of working out kinks in a server build, is it possible to re-bootstrap a server from scratch, image and all? (Same flavor, say.) By that I mean without recreating the server, keeping its IP address if nothing else. I can't find a way to do this. It would have some advantages, I should think: It wouldn't decrement the 'server create' quota. The existing server would keep its IP address. One machine of a cluster could be rebuilt to a new image without having to change the IP address. (Maybe load balancers make IP addresses a moot point, but it still seems like a worthwhile task.)

• Overloading methods that do logically different things, does this break any major principles?

  This is something that's been bugging me for a bit now. In some cases you see code that is a series of overloads, but when you look at the actual implementation you realize they do logically different things. However writing them as overloads allows the caller to ignore this and get the same end result. But would it be more sound to name the methods more explicitly then to write them as overloads? public void LoadWords(string filePath) { var lines = File.ReadAllLines(filePath).ToList(); LoadWords(lines); } public void LoadWords(IEnumerable<string> words) { // loads words into a List<string> based on some filters } Would these methods better serve future developers to be named as LoadWordsFromFile() and LoadWordsFromEnumerable()? It seems unnecessary to me, but if that is better what programming principle would apply here? On the flip side it'd make it so you didn't need to read the signatures to see exactly how you can load the words, which as Uncle Bob says would be a double take. But in general is this type of overloading to be avoided then?

• Psexec issue when running an application on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine from a 2003 R2 machine

  I am trying to run an application on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine from a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine using a batch file with the following line of code in a batch file: psexec \\nightmachine -u DOMAIN\User -p Password -i "C:\FilePath\Application.exe" argument1 argument2 The application fails to run correctly when started using psexec, but the application will run correctly if I have logged into the nightmachine with the same user and started it from its file path via cmd. I have been able to get hold of the error returned in the application from its log and the exception returned is the following: System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL 'rasapi32.dll': A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007045A) After searching for that error code on the net, there are a lot of posts saying that this is caused by file corruption, but I cant see why that would be the case as the application will run normally when not being run from psexec. (the user is an administrator on both machines) Can anyone please help me on this? If any more information is needed to help solve this issue then please ask and I will do my best to post it.

• Why doesn't unity show icons or panel after installing numix theme?

  I'm a beginner to Ubuntu/Linux and I have a problem: Unity is not loading! When I choose Unity in the log-in screen, I get notifications and I can see the mouse, but that's it. I have Ubuntu 14.04 installed, along with Bumblebee/Primus. I had no issues whatsoever, until I decided to try the numix-theme and the numix icon pack. I added the PPA and installed it, but when I logged off and logged back on, nothing showed up. I panicked, and in tty1, I purged numix-* but that did not solve the issue. To get by day-to-day use, I installed gnome-flashback, and among those environments, only the metacity one works. (The compiz one does not.) I've tried installing the unity-tweak-tool to reset unit, installing dconf and doing: dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ but that didn't work either. One site even told me to delete /org/compiz/, but that did not resolve the issue. When I checked ccsm, the Unity plugin had a check to it. I also tried with Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears, but it gets stuck on "loading icons". Any help will be awesome!

• Mount "Macrium Reflect" on a partition, boot from there?

  Can Macrium's Reflect recovery CD be mounted/used with GRUB ? If the cd can be 'put' (loaded/mounted/...) in a partition, then the only disc needed would be the actual recovery disc, which could be on an external hard drive, or even on the same machine in another partition, thus allowing on to recover using only what's on the machine itself. I have WXPpro and Xubuntu8.04 double mounted, really happy with them together, use each right now to fix problems with the other when they come up. Also have a partition for the Reflect CD, but I just can't get it to load from Grub, which would be great... Thanks for any thoughts, probably someone has already done this I know !

  Hi, I need a good podcast aggregator. I was using Juice 2.2, but that will not work on my new pc which is running Windows 7 (64 bit). Could anyone recommend one please ? I need the following functionality : 1- Subscribe to podcasts (mp3's from radio shows) using rss 2- Have OPML support so I can load up my old subscriptions easily 3- That runs quietly in the backgrond and looks after itself 4- That deletes old episodes automatically after a set time 5- Isn't just designed for an IPOD (I use a simple generic mp3 player to listen). • IRQ Conflicts Causing Video Card and Boot Problems?

  tl;dr - I have 4 devices sharing 1 IRQ. Is this bad and how do I tell the BIOS to stop it? Background: I have an old Dell GX280 dual Pentium 4 that I (semi) resurrected last weekend with an installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything was going fine the first several hours until a problem that plagued me when WinXP was on that machine happened -- it froze. Completely froze. None of the myriad of ways I have found here on askubuntu helped me to regain control except a long-press of the power button to shut it off. Clearly, this wasn't a software/WinXP issue. After much googling, I found that hardware conflicts can often cause this sort of total lock-up and with all the odd blocks of yellow and flecks of color showing on my screen (both WinXP and Ubuntu) I figured my old GeForce 7600 was failing and causing me these odd issues. (A good canned-air dusting of the entire interior fixed the color fleck problem) Again, through much googling and numerous answers found on askubuntu, I somehow stumbled my way onto the lshw command. After going through it, line by line, I found that I have four devices sharing IRQ 16: eth0, wlan0, ide0 (DVD-RW), and my video card. In hindsight, I can recall weird instances of my Ethernet connection to another computer not working when I thought it should. I never full troubleshot those issues so it could be a coincidence. The other thing that has been plaguing me since installing Ubuntu (wasn't there during WinXP) has been periodic moments of my monitor getting no signal from Ubuntu during boot. The first couple days, it would disappear after the Dell boot screen and reappear at Ubuntu login. Now, it disappears after the Dell boot screen and doesn't return at all -- I have to hit F12 where I can load a safe mode version of Ubuntu and get more details like dmesg and lsdev. I also ran memtest86 overnight and woke up to zero errors, so failing RAM is out. Where do I go from here?

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student?

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Can't connect to Wireless Network - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS & Sabrent A111N USB Dongle

  I've been trying to connect to this network for quite some time. I can't directly connect to the router with a Wire, but can access the Router with other wireless devices without any issues. I had previously tried several other Wifi nic's but none of them would load properly. Today, i went and bought a new (supported) Sabrent A111N USB Dongle, which said explicitly that it works with Linux 2.4 +. I popped the Dongle in, and low-and-behold it immediately said that there were Available Wireless Connections. I selected my connection and tried to connect, but it just loops constantly while saying Wireless Disconnected then attempts to connect again over and over. ifconfig and iwconfig both show my device in a ready and working state. However, iwlist wlan0 scan says that there are no results found. I don't get it... At one point, I could see the CPU in the DHCP client list under the router, but it doesn't fully make the connection (something about a timeout?). Any help would be appreciated. • PostgreSQL disaster recovery options

  My customer has quite a large (the total "data" folder size is 200G) PostgreSQL database and we are working on a disaster recovery plan. We have identified three different types of disasters so far: hardware outage, too much load and unintentional data loss due to erroneously executed bad migration (like DELETE or ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN). First two types seem to be easy to mitigate but we can't elaborate a good mitigation plan for the third type. I proposed to use ZFS and frequent (hourly) snapshots but "ZFS" means "OpenIndiana" these days and our Ops engineers do not have much expertise in it, so using OpenIndiana imposes another risk. Colleagues try to convince me that restoring from PostgreSQL PITR backup can be as fast as restoring from a ZFS snapshot but I highly doubt that replaying, say, 50G of archived WALs can be considered "fast". What other options are we missing? Is ZFS an only viable alternative? Can we get a fast Pg DB restore time in the Linux environment?

• Visual annotator for large images

  I have a few hundred images of 30000 x 10000 pixels in size. Each image has lots of text (rendered as pixels) on it. I'd like to translate all text to another language. I speak both languages, and it's fine for me to translate each phrase manually. I need an image editor which can open these images quickly (faster than Inkscape, which needs about 60 seconds to open such an image), lets me zoom and rotate by 90 degrees, lets me erase (i.e. change the color of a selected rectangle to solid white), lets me add text, and lets me save the file as quickly as possible. I'd like to minimize the time I have to wait for the software to load, render and save images. Which is the best program for that on Windows? On Linux?

• wrong kernel running after install

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 from unetbootin. When it reboots after the install, uname -r says: 3.5.0-17-generic ..this means that no modules have loaded for the kernel that is actually installed (3.13.0-32-generic). Does anyone know why this kernel should be installed via the install process? Is it an artifact of using Unetbootin? Booting into the Unetbootin image gives the correct kernel, and thus the modules load. Knowing why is one thing, but I'm not sure how to remedy it now. Because no modules are loaded, I can't connect to the network or connect a USB drive. I've tried update-grub, which seems to find the correct kernel, but doesn't seem to tell the system to boot from it. I've also tried selecting the kernel at boot time using the "Advanced Options for Ubuntu", and the 3.13.x kernel is the only one listed. Selecting this lead to the 3.5.x kernel stubbornly loading.. I'm a fairly accomplished sysadmin, but this one has me flummoxed :) Can anyone help?

• How can I avoid heroku stopping my dyno?

  I build MVP's for clients regularly. Often I deploy on Heroku so they can see if the product works and demo it to prospects and investors. Then I have an application deployed on heroku, and it works like a charm, if not for one little thing. The app takes about 30 seconds to start up and heroku has the annoying habit of killing dyno's if they don't get traffic. My client is using the application for demo purposes now, so the load is extremely low and intermittent. I'm looking for a solution that is preferably: cost effective can be applied to multiple apps simultaneously What is the best way to avoid having the first request taking 30 seconds?

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine. I would like to be able to see how long each of the polices are taking to load (if possable split user and computer) and any other info that might help (services starting etc) I changed the userenvdebuglevel reg option to generate the userenv.log file but it did'nt contain very much info Thanks Luke

• Server suddenly running out of entropy

  Since a reboot yesterday, one of our virtual servers (Debian Lenny, virtualized with Xen) is constantly running out of entropy, leading to timeouts etc. when trying to connect over SSH / TLS-enabled protocols. Is there any way to check which process(es) is(/are) eating up all the entropy? Edit: What I tried: Adding additional entropy sources: time_entropyd, rng-tools feeding urandom back into random, pseudorandom file accesses – netted about 1 MiB additional entropy per second, problems still persisted Checking for unusual activity via lsof, netstat and tcpdump – nothing. No noticeable load or anything Stopping daemons, restarting permanent sessions, rebooting the entire VM – no change in behaviour What in the end worked: Waiting. Since about yesterday noon, there are no connection problems anymore. Entropy is still somewhat low (128 Bytes peak), but TLS/SSH sessions have no noticeable delay anymore.
