• Mobile cross-platform SDK for computationally intensive apps

  I am aware of the PhoneGap toolkit for creating mobile applications for virtually all mobile platforms with a significant market share. However, the code in PhoneGap that is shared between the different platforms is written in JavaScript. While I like JS, I think it's hardly appropriate for computationally intensive tasks. The situation with Titanium is pretty much the same. So, is there any way that I can create a cross-platform mobile app that has the computationally intensive code shared between the platforms? Some context: Obviously, I don't want to implement the time consuming algorithm in many different languages, since this violates DRY, increases the chance for bugs slipping in at least one version and require boilerplate code to work. I've looked at Xamarin's MonoTouch and Mono for Android tools, but while they cover iOS and Android, they're not nearly as versatile for deployment as PhoneGap. On the other hand, (IMO) the statically typed nature of C# is more suited for intense computation than JS. Are there any other SDK/tools appropriate for the task that I don't know about or a point about the mentioned above that I've missed? Also, uploading data to a web service for processing is not an option, because of the traffic required.

• Ubuntu won't suspend anymore, but it did upon install.

  I fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10 back when it came out, and my laptop was suspending fine. All of a sudden, I can't get my laptop to suspend anymore. It's an HP Pavilion dv2-1110, but I don't think it's a hardware issue, here's why: It suspended fine upon first install. I haven't installed any new kernels since then, but I have installed tons of packages, so it's probably a package. The suspend and hibernate options disappeared from the shutdown menu. If I press my keyboard's suspend button (or if I close the lid) I get the following message: If I try the command pmi action suspend, I get the error message: Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files. If I try the command echo -n mem > sudo /sys/power/state I get absolutely no output and no visible effect. What might be causing this behavior? I thought a list of installed packages might be useful, but it's huge and I don't know how to post it here in collapse/expand mode or something. EDIT:Just in case someone asks, none of the installed packages are kdm or anything like that (which would justify the lack of options in gnome's shutdown menu).

• Can I run AD commands from a standard PowerShell script?

  I am putting together a script to run post-sysprep. It should check if the machine is on the network, and if it is then it should query AD to see if a computer account exists with it's service tag (we're using these as the hostnames of the machines.) If it does exist, it should delete the account and rejoin the machine to the domain. I have got the majority of the script running, but need to run the following: Remove-ADComputer -Identity $distinguishedName How can I run this from the "standard" powershell environment? I don't want to use the AD module. (By the way - I'm on a mixed mode 2000/03 domain as we are in the process of upgrading to 2008) I'm new to PowerShell so be gentle if I'm completely missing the point! Thanks, Ben

• Full Backup & Restore for Windows Vista

  I'm looking for a freeware or low cost application that will backup everything, including registry on Windows Vista Home Premium and to restore from a CDROM disk. The destination is an external hard drive on USB 2.0. Searching on SuperUser and Stack Overflow show articles, but don't mention full backup of the registry and complete restore using CDROM. I would also like to have compressed output and incremental backups. One article mentions CloneZilla, but their web page says that the incremental feature is not supported. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1. I need to backup 200 GB onto a 230 GB drive and would like to have multiple backups (thus the need for compression). Other requirements: Single file restore Quality is more important than performance. Application must run on Windows Vista. Extra: Run as daemon or background task on 4 user system. Thanks

• C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience. • Events 1030 and 1006 in Windows 2003

  I've got a computer running Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition Service Pack 2 and periodically (every 5 minutes) the systems generates 2 errors that can be seen in the event viewer. The codes of the events are 1030, 1006 that seems to be related to group policies... I don´t know if these events are realted to the perfomance of the system but anyway i would like to fix them. I've googled around and seems to be a common problem but i haven't found a solution for these events. Do you know how can be fix it? Thanks in advance

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• How do I diagnose a HP Notebook which has hardware issues?

  My HP DV6t-2300 recently crashed while using FLV Player. It wouldn't start up after this so I had to do a hardware reset (remove power sources, hold down power button ~15 seconds, put back power sources). After this it would turn on, but start up would freeze in Ubuntu, Windows 7, Ubuntu Recovery Mode, and various Linux Live CDs. The only successful way to boot was in Windows 7 Safe Mode. The HP Customer Service was very polite, but they are trying to blame it on a corrupt operating system which is clearly not the case (since I have tried 4 operating systems and none work). I am thinking it might be the GPU since 1) I was watching movies when it crashed and 2) Windows Safe Mode might not use the dedicated GPU. I already ran Memory and HDD tests and there were no detected errors. Any ideas of what's wrong, or suggestions for tests that I should run in safe mode? Should I try reinstalling Windows 7 to convince HP that it's not the OS?

• Google Apps for Business on a separate infrastructure?

  Does anyone know if Google Apps for Business edition hosts the apps (gmail, calendar, etc.) on a physically separate infrastructure than the Standard (free) infrastructure? We've been growing increasingly annoyed with the lost/severely delayed email messages, downtime, etc. of Google Apps (standard) over time, and we are wondering if moving to the paid version would bring any benefits. Specifically, if the Business edition is not in some way on a different physical infrastructure, and we are in essence paying for a few small perks but still run on the usual standard/free setup, then we would probably have the same (or just as many) issues with the Business version. I've emailed Google's sales team responsible for GApps, but haven't heard anything back in 4 days, which already doesn't speak well for the service. So, anyone have any insight into this? • Are there any free voice transcription software?

  I have some 1-hour-long voice recordings containing useful information that I may need to look up in the future. Instead of transcribing them myself (which will take me many hours), I want to automate it using software. I don't need an accurate transcription; it's OK as long as I can get an idea of what was being talked about by skimming over the transcription. With this, I can quickly figure out which part of the audio contains the information I need, and is much more convenient than seeking randomly. In theory I could write a program to split the audio into 3 minutes chucks and pipe them into Google Voice's free voicemail transcription service... But I hope there are better solutions. Do you know any free voice transcription software? Note: Free trials are also acceptable

• webmin not working on port 10000

  Hi, I posted a similar question yesterday but can't seem to find that post. I have installed webmin on my server which has SSL and its service is running but I am unable to open it in browser. I thought may be the port is blocked by server's firewall so I entered port 10000 (TCP - inbound) in APF but still no luck. When I use https://localhost:10000 on server to access webmin then it works fine but not remotely. Why is such a simple thing so hard to run? Thanks

• How do I boot a virtual machine image from my network?

  I have many machines which require the same configurations. My goal is to boot them all from the network and load a virtual machine. It would be wonderful to have one image for all of our customer service machines. That way, I could load the virtual image, perform updates, and know the next time they boot up they will have all the changes. Ideally, the machines would store the image locally and only download a new image if there has been a change. With all the information out there on "desktop virtualization", "PXE booting", and "virtual machines", I feel lost. I have been reading for hours and feel like I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to do this using open source or free software. Any suggestions?

• Domain Computers Not Listed In Network

  Our network computers are all connected to a domain, and I can see them if I search the active directory (I can click 'search active directory' and then select 'computers' and then Find Now, and all of the computers will appear). However, the computers are not listed in the network browser on any of our computers (Win XP, Win7, Linux, etc) which are connected to the domain. DC is running Windows Server 2008 (Windows Server Standard) with a configured DNS and DHCP server. All of the IPs on our local network are static IPs, although I can't see how that would make a difference. I can still connect to computers on the network via \\computer_name, but I cannot browse them in 'network' or in 'my network places'. The computer browser service is not started on the DC, but I tried starting that and it had no effect. DC currently has the firewall configured as 'off' to try to debug this problem. • Importing .eml files into Exchange Discovery Folder

  I am needing to import over 18mm eml files into Exchange (this is for a client, so I'm restricted on what I can do - flexibility). They do not want these emails to go to the actual users email, so they do not want them to show up in the users inbox, deleted ..etc. They want to be able to search for these emails for litigation purposes ... hence the discovery folder. I have looked into the Pickup folder, which does not do what I want. I have also been writing some C# code to use the EWS (Exchange Web Service) Managed API, but so far I have not found anything to work for me. The Exchange server is 2010 SP1. I have looked through other questions/answers and they do not really match up with what I'm needing to accomplish. These are older emails that have already been removed from the users mailbox. So to turn around and put these emails into the Users inbox would (of course) be very bad.

• HTTP Protocal

  I have worked with the HTTP protocal for about ten years now and I have found it to be incredibly usefull for transfering data espicaly for remote systems and regardless of the network enviroment. Prior to the existance of web services, developers use to use HTTP to screen scrap data off of web pages in order to interact with remote systems, and then process the data as they needed. I use to use the HTTPWebRequest and HTTPWebRespones classes in order to screen scrap data from various sites that had information I needed to use if no web service was avalible. This allowed me to call just about any webpage and grab all of the content on the page. Below is piece of a web spider that I build about 5-7 years ago. • Basic clarification about Limited FTP/sFTP users

  I would like to get some clarification about the correct way to create limited users to access to my VPS user as WEBSERVER with Nginix. I'm used to NOT install FTP and access via SFTP only. It is ok for every set up? this is what I usually do from to create a limited user called "admin" that should be able to have access via SFTP to the folder with the website data mkdir -p /var/www/mysite.com/ adduser admin adduser admin www-data chown -R root:root /var/www chmod -R 755 /var/www chmod -R 755 /var/www/mysite.com chown -R admin:www-data /var/www/mysite.com/ It seems not to be the correct way, I always have problems with permission when I upload some files (for example with Wordpress in general). I would like to create an user that does work exactly as the one that the "provides" give to their client when they buy an Hosting service (that is a FTP, I would prefer SFTP access). It is for personal user, but I think that a limited user is a lot safer to use then the "root" via SFTP.
