  • Bitbucket and a small development house

    - by Marlon
I am in the process of finally rolling Mercurial as our version control system at work. This is a huge deal for everyone as, shockingly, they have never used a VCS. After months of putting the bug in management's ears, they finally saw the light and now realise how much better it is than working with a network of shared folders! In the process of rolling this out, I am thinking of different strategies to manage our stuff and I am leaning towards using Bitbucket as our "central" repository. The projects in Bitbucket will solely be private projects and everyone will push and pull from there. I am open to different suggestions, but has anyone got a similar setup? If so, what caveats have you encountered?

  • Are these GitHub features implemented in BitBucket?

    - by doug
I recently joined a company that, while using git for version control, uses BitBucket as remote/master + git interface for projects. This is my first exposure to BitBucket. There are a couple of GitHub features I rely heavily on in my daily workflow and I am trying to find their counterpart in BitBucket or else how I can recreate the same functionality if it is not provided out-of-the-box. In particular, in GitHub I rely heavily on tags (which I realize reside in git) to link commits to issues (feature request, bug report, etc.); in addition, given projects specs are often decomposed into milestones, I use the milestone feature in GitHub Issues to track progress towards our project milestones (ie, in GitHub a milestone is comprised of a sequence of issues, and the commit tagged with the last remaining issue under that Milestone, causes that Milestone to be annotated as completed. I suspect this workflow can be recreated using Jira, which my new employer also uses, but before trying that, I want to learn if it's already implemented and I just can't find it.

  • Term for Production Rollback

    - by trainer
The firm I work at keeps a copy of the compiled source code on production. So basically on our Production server, we have two folders: ProductionServer\SourceCode\ ProductionServer\SourceCodeRollback\ The Rollback folder always contains one version older code. This is done so that on deployment nights, if something is wrong with the new code, the deployer(who is not familiar with source control software) has the older version to revert back to. My question is: Is there an official computer science term/nomenclature for the Rollback folder? Or is "Rollback" itself the official term?

  • Help my graphists sharing their work

    - by Andy M
As a developer I'm used to Subversion for source control and I think it's great for sharing source code between developers. Now thinking about my graphists and game designers, they need to have a slightly different approach I think. They need to share binary files They need to be able to have a thumbnail and preview of their work I don't want to include their binaries into my game repository (would be much too heavy for developer when updating) I've seen that some graphists uses personally created website to share their work but I was wondering if some "standard" application existed in order to provide my graphists a cool way of working together. Is there a common way of dealing with this? Is the way I want to do (only final sprites on my game repo) correct? How do you guys do this as game developers?

  • Workflow of sharing code for small teams

    - by Mihalis Bagos
Problem is, we have developed a small CMS, that is different per implementation (currently). Of course development of this is never complete. Sometimes, we are working on more than one project that implements it (by copying-pasting the code files of the CMS to each project), and we add a new feature that we want to share on other projects as well (these can be small ones too, ie a custom ajax JSON controller - we use MVC) What we want to do is quickly and uniformly share the code with all other projects, via a version control system (or something similar), and generally organize the workflow as we know this isn't a very good workflow that we have. What would you suggest? Also, at the momment, the software we use is Visual Studio 2010, so we are strongly considering TFS, but even if we get it we still don't know the ideal workflow, or even if TFS supports what we want to do. Edit: Also note, we have specific implementations that have modifications over the CMS base that we want to KEEP only in the project area. (ie: a specific feature that we DONT want to share with the base CMS code)

  • Function keys on an external keyboard

    - by asymptotically
So I bought a keyboard for my laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the function key (though I know many people say it's useless). On my laptop, I control volume with the function key and F9-11. How can I get the same functionality on my external keyboard? The advanced keyboard settings don't have an option related to the function key. More specifically, it would be great if I could map it to my 'Menu' key which I'm never going to use. Or is there a way to get full functionality without it?

  • Find kth smallest element in a binary search tree in Optimum way

    - by Bragaadeesh
Hi, I need to find the kth smallest element in the binary search tree without using any static/global variable. How to achieve it efficiently? The solution that I have in my mind is doing the operation in O(n), the worst case since I am planning to do an inorder traversal of the entire tree. But deep down I feel that I am not using the BST property here. Is my assumptive solution correct or is there a better one available ?

  • Java: immutability, overuse of stack -- better data structure?

    - by HH
I overused hashSets but it was slow, then changed to Stacks, speed boost-up. Poly's reply uses Collections.emptyList() as immutable list, cutting out excess null-checkers. No Collections.emptyStack(). Combining the words stack and immutability, from the last experiences, gets "immutable stack" (probably not related to functional prog). Java Api 5 for list interface shows that Stack is an implementing class for list and arraylist, here. The java.coccurrent pkg does not have any immutable Stack data structure. The first hinted of misusing stack. The lack of immutabily in the last and poly's book recommendation leads way to list. Something very primitive, fast, no extra layers, with methods like emptyThing(). Overuse of stack and where I use it DataFile.java: public Stack<DataFile> files; FileObject.java: public Stack<String> printViews = new Stack<String>(); FileObject.java:// private static Stack<Object> getFormat(File f){return (new Format(f)).getFormat();} Format.java: private Stack<Object> getLine(File[] fs,String s){return wF;} Format.java: private Stack<Object> getFormat(){return format;} Positions.java: public static Stack<Integer[]> getPrintPoss(String s,File f,Integer maxViewPerF) Positions.java: Stack<File> possPrint = new Stack<File>(); Positions.java: Stack<Integer> positions=new Stack<Integer>(); Record.java: private String getFormatLine(Stack<Object> st) Record.java: Stack<String> lines=new Stack<String>(); SearchToUser.java: public static final Stack<File> allFiles = findf.getFs(); SearchToUser.java: public static final Stack<File> allDirs = findf.getDs(); SearchToUser.java: private Stack<Integer[]> positionsPrint=new Stack<Integer[]>(); SearchToUser.java: public Stack<String> getSearchResults(String s, Integer countPerFile, Integer resCount) SearchToUser.java: Stack<File> filesToS=Fs2Word.getFs2W(s,50); SearchToUser.java: Stack<String> rs=new Stack<String>(); View.java: public Stack<Integer[]> poss = new Stack<Integer[4]>(); View.java: public static Stack<String> getPrintViewsFileWise(String s,Object[] df,Integer maxViewsPerF) View.java: Stack<String> substrings = new Stack<String>(); View.java: private Stack<String> printViews=new Stack<String>(); View.java: MatchView(Stack<Integer> pss,File f,Integer maxViews) View.java: Stack<String> formatFile; View.java: private Stack<Search> files; View.java: private Stack<File> matchingFiles; View.java: private Stack<String> matchViews; View.java: private Stack<String> searchMatches; View.java: private Stack<String> getSearchResults(Integer numbResults) Easier with List: AllDirs and AllFs, now looping with push, but list has more pow. methods such as addAll [OLD] From Stack to some immutable data structure How to get immutable Stack data structure? Can I box it with list? Should I switch my current implementatios from stacks to Lists to get immutable? Which immutable data structure is Very fast with about similar exec time as Stack? • Stack data storage order

    - by Jamie Dixon
When talking about a stack in either computing or "real" life we usually assume a "first on, last off" type of functionality. Because the idea of a stack is based around something in the physical world, does it matter how the data in the stack is stored? I notice in a lot of examples that the storage of the stack data is quite often done using an array and the newest item added to the stack is placed at the bottom of the array. (like adding a new plate to an existing stack of plates except putting it underneath the other plates rather than on top). As a paradigm, does it matter in what order the data is stored within the stack as long as the operation of the stack acts as expected?

  • Access Violation Using memcpy or Assignment to an Array in a Struct

    - by Synetech inc.
Hi, I wrote a program last night that worked just fine but when I refactored it today to make it more extensible, I ended up with a problem. The original version had a hard-coded array of bytes. After some processing, some bytes were written into the array and then some more processing was done. To avoid hard-coding the pattern, I put the array in a structure so that I could add some related data and create an array of them. However now, I cannot write to the array in the structure. Here’s a pseudo-code example: main() { char pattern[]="\x32\x33\x12\x13\xba\xbb"; PrintData(pattern); pattern[2]='\x65'; PrintData(pattern); } That one works but this one does not: struct ENTRY { char* pattern; int somenum; }; main() { ENTRY Entries[] = { {"\x32\x33\x12\x13\xba\xbb\x9a\xbc", 44} , {"\x12\x34\x56\x78", 555} }; PrintData(Entries[0].pattern); Entries[0].pattern[2]='\x65'; //0xC0000005 exception!!! :( PrintData(Entries[0].pattern); } The second version causes an access violation exception on the assignment. I’m sure it’s because the second version allocates memory differently, but I’m starting to get a headache trying to figure out what’s what or how to get fix this. (I’m currently working around it by dynamically allocating a buffer of the same size as the pattern array, copying the pattern to the new buffer, making the changes to the buffer, using the buffer in the place of the pattern array, and then trying to remember to free the—temporary—buffer.) (Specifically, the original version cast the pattern array—+offset—to a DWORD* and assigned a DWORD constant to it to overwrite the four target bytes. The new version cannot do that since the length of the source is unknown—may not be four bytes—so it uses memcpy instead. I’ve checked and re-checked and have made sure that the pointers to memcpy are correct, but I still get an access violation. I use memcpy instead of str(n)cpy because I am using plain chars (as an array of bytes), not Unicode chars and ignoring the null-terminator. Using an assignment as above causes the same problem.) Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

  • Issue with dynamic array Queue data structure with void pointer

    - by Nazgulled
Hi, Maybe there's no way to solve this the way I'd like it but I don't know everything so I better ask... I've implemented a simple Queue with a dynamic array so the user can initialize with whatever number of items it wants. I'm also trying to use a void pointer as to allow any data type, but that's the problem. Here's my code: typedef void * QueueValue; typedef struct sQueueItem { QueueValue value; } QueueItem; typedef struct sQueue { QueueItem *items; int first; int last; int size; int count; } Queue; void queueInitialize(Queue **queue, size_t size) { *queue = xmalloc(sizeof(Queue)); QueueItem *items = xmalloc(sizeof(QueueItem) * size); (*queue)->items = items; (*queue)->first = 0; (*queue)->last = 0; (*queue)->size = size; (*queue)->count = 0; } Bool queuePush(Queue * const queue, QueueValue value, size_t val_sz) { if(isNull(queue) || isFull(queue)) return FALSE; queue->items[queue->last].value = xmalloc(val_sz); memcpy(queue->items[queue->last].value, value, val_sz); queue->last = (queue->last+1) % queue->size; queue->count += 1; return TRUE; } Bool queuePop(Queue * const queue, QueueValue *value) { if(isEmpty(queue)) return FALSE; *value = queue->items[queue->first].value; free(queue->items[queue->first].value); queue->first = (queue->first+1) % queue->size; queue->count -= 1; return TRUE; } The problem lies on the queuePop function. When I call it, I lose the value because I free it right away. I can't seem to solve this dilemma. I want my library to be generic and modular. The user should not care about allocating and freeing memory, that's the library's job. How can the user still get the value from queuePop and let the library handle all memory allocs/frees?

  • Cruise Control and Mercurial. Setup problems

    - by Bernard Larouche
I am completely a newbie in continuous integration but I am trying to learn it. Here is my set up. I have a main production location. Computer A. I have a virtual machine hosting Windows Server 2008 OS which have Cruise Control.NET installed and running. Computer B I use Mercurial as my source control tool installed in Computer A. Everything is configured and I can see Cruise Control report on my Computer B Web server and I can me my repository on Computer A Web server. The problem is the following : From my Computer B's Cruise Control console I have the following error : Source control failure : Unable to execute file [c:\develop\CCnet\WorkingDir\hg]. The file may not exist or may not be executable. File not found 'C:\develop\CCnet\CCnetrtifacts\msbuils-results.xml. What I did is that I copied my project directory on the Cruise Control computer c:\develop\CCnet\WorkingDir\ and Here is my source control block included in my ccnet.config : <sourcecontrol type="hg"> <repo>http://mylocalmachinewebserver<repo> <workingDirectory>c:\develop\CCnet\WorkingDirectory<workingDirectory> </sourcecontrol> Could someone help me understand my problem Many thanks

  • Metalanguage like BNF or XML-Schema to validate a tree-instance against a tree-model

    - by Stefan
Hi! I'm implementing a new machine learning algorithm in Java that extracts a prototype datastructure from a set of structured datasets (tree-structure). As im developing a generic library for that purpose, i kept my design independent from concrete data-representations like XML. My problem now is that I need a way to define a data model, which is basically a ruleset describing valid trees, against which a set of trees is being matched. I thought of using BNF or a similar dialect. Basically I need a way to iterate through the space of all valid TreeNodes defined by the ModelTree (Like a search through the search space for algorithms like A*) so that i can compare my set of concrete trees with the model. I know that I'll have to deal with infinite spaces there but first things first. I know, it's rather tricky (and my sentences are pretty bumpy) but I would appreciate any clues. Thanks in advance, Stefan

  • XML Attributes or Element Nodes?

    - by Camsoft
    Example XML using element nodes: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <users> <user> <name>David Smith</name> <phone>0441 234443</phone> <email>[email protected]</email> <addresses> <address> <street>1 Some Street</street> <town>Toy Town</town> <country>UK</country> </address> <address> <street>5 New Street</street> <town>Lego City</town> <country>US</country> </address> </addresses> </user> </users> Example XML using attributes: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <users> <user name="David Smith" phone="0441 234443" email="[email protected]"> <addresses> <address street="1 Some Street" town="Toy Town" country="UK" /> <address street="5 New Street" town="Lego City" country="US" /> </addresses> </user> </users> I'm needing to build an XML file based on data from a relation database and can't work out whether I should use attributes or elements. What is best practice when building XML files?

  • How do you handle the fetchxml result data?

    - by Luke Baulch
I have avoided working with fetchxml as I have been unsure the best way to handle the result data after calling crmService.Fetch(fetchXml). In a couple of situations, I have used an XDocument with LINQ to retrieve the data from this data structure, such as: XDocument resultset = XDocument.Parse(_service.Fetch(fetchXml)); if (resultset.Root == null || !resultset.Root.Elements("result").Any()) { return; } foreach (var displayItem in resultset.Root.Elements("result").Select(item => item.Element(displayAttributeName)).Distinct()) { if (displayItem!= null && displayItem.Value != null) { dropDownList.Items.Add(displayItem.Value); } } What is the best way to handle fetchxml result data, so that it can be easily used. Applications such as passing these records into an ASP.NET datagrid would be quite useful.

  • Database structure - is mySQL the right choice?

    - by Industrial
Hi everyone, We are currently planning the database structure of a quite complex e-commerce web app that has flexibility as it's main cornerstone. Our app features a large amount of data (products) and we have run into a slight headache trying to keep performance high without compromizing normalization rules in the database, or leaving our highly beloved flexibility concept behind when integrating product options (also widely known as product attributes or parameters). Based on various references and sources available, we have made up lists on pros and cons of all major and well known database patterns to solve this. After comparing these, we have come up with two final alternatives: EAV (Entity-attribute-value model) : Pros: Database is used for all sorting. Cons: All related queries will include a number of joins between multiple tables in order to complete the collection of data. SLOB (Serialized LOB, also known as Facade?) : Pros: Very flexible. Keeping the number of necessary joins low compared to a EAV design pattern. Easy to update/add/remove data from each product. Cons: All sorting will be done by the application instead of the database. Will use lots of performance (memory?) when big datasets is processed by a large number of users. Our main questions: Which pattern/structure would you use, or maybe even a different solution? Is there better databases besides mySQL available nowadays to accomplish what we want? Thanks a lot! • Skip List vs. Binary Tree

  • LRU cache design

    - by user297850
Least Recently Used (LRU) Cache is to discard the least recently used items first How do you design and implement such a cache class? The design requirements are as follows: 1) find the item as fast as we can 2) Once a cache misses and a cache is full, we need to replace the least recently used item as fast as possible. How to analyze and implement this question in terms of design pattern and algorithm design?

  • Referencing a union inside a structure using union tag gives incorrect address

    - by AlanKley
I had a need to declare a union inside a structure as defined below: struct MyStruct { int m_DataType; DWORD m_DataLen; union theData { char m_Buff [_MAX_PATH]; struct MyData m_myData; } m_Data; }; Initially, I tried accessing the union data as follows (before I added the m_Data declaration): MyStruct m_myStruct; char* pBuff = m_myStruct.theData::m_Buff; This compiles but returns to pBuff a pointer to the beginning of the MyStruct structure which caused me to overwrite the m_DataType & m_DataLength members when I thought I was writing to the m_Buff buffer. I am using Visual Studio 2008. Can anyone explain this unexpected behavior? Thanks.
