  Background Last year, I came to a very tough decision that I would cease publicizing Connect items in an attempt to drive up votes and get important issues fixed. This was almost entirely due to a couple of MVPs criticizing me for raising awareness of certain Connect items instead of letting them be found "naturally."   Packaged with WebLogic 12c wls-maven-plugin let’s you install, start and stop servers, create domain, execute WLST scripts, compile and deploy applications. The plug-in works with Maven 2.x and 3.x. WebLogic 12c can be downloaded from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/index.html. • Java Cloud Service for developers

  The advent of cloud computing has reinvented application development for many companies. “That’s the beauty of the cloud,” says Cameron Purdy, vice president of development, Oracle. “It dramatically improves developer productivity because they can do what they do best without having to manage complex development, testing, staging, and production environments.” The key is to find a platform that doesn’t impose proprietary restrictions or force developers to learn new tools. For example, Oracle Java Cloud Service is an enterprise-grade platform as a service for building and deploying Java EE, Oracle WebLogic Server, and Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF) applications. “It’s designed to be flexible and easy to use,” says Purdy. “And it is also a standards-based solution -it’s not proprietary and there is no cloud lock-in. Developers get instant access to an enterprise-grade environment for a simple, monthly subscription.” Oracle Java Cloud Service instances are created with just a few clicks, so businesses can create a rich application development environment within minutes. Running on Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Exalogic, the underlying infrastructure also leverages Oracle Fusion Middleware’s integration with common services. For example, instances come integrated and preconfigured with optimized Oracle Database and Oracle Identity Management configurations. Based on Oracle Enterprise Manager, the Oracle Java Cloud Service console lets customers easily manage and monitor their Oracle Java Cloud Service instances. • How can I efficiently update only the entities that matter in a given frame?

  I'm making a RTS, which can potentially have lots of units in one map (think Age of Empires). I'm looking for a way to update my units. I want to avoid calling a virtual Update() method every frame on every entity. On the other hand, units that are not in view should still be updated and behave "normally." I'm assuming this is a fairly standard question; what would be a way to handle this situation?

We’ll also review Linux services and run levels, how to start and stop them, checking the status of a particular service and enabling a service to be started automatically at system boot. 3. HOL: Storage Management - In this hands-on lab session, you will learn about storage management with LVM2, the Linux Logical Volume Manager, preparing block devices, creating physical and logical volumes, creating file systems on top of logical volumes, and resizing file systems dynamically. You will also practice setting up software RAID devices, configuring encrypted block devices.Btrfs File System - In this hands-on lab session, we will introduce you to Btrfs file system. You will be able to create and mount a Btrfs file system and learn to setup a mirrored/striped file system across multiple block devices. • Powerful Lessons in Data from the Presidential Election

  Now that we’ve had a few days to recover from the U.S. presidential election, it’s a good time to take a step back from politics and look for the customer experience lessons that we can take away. The most powerful lesson is that when you know more about your base, you will have an advantage over your competition. That advantage will translate into you winning and your competition losing. Michael Scherer of TIME was given access to Obama’s data analysts two days before the election. His account is documented in Inside the Secret World of the Data Crunchers Who Helped Obama Win. What we learned from Scherer’s inside view is how well Obama’s team did in getting the right data, analyzing it, and acting on it. This data team recognized how critical it was to break down data silos within the campaign. As Scherer noted, they created “a single system that merged information from pollsters, fundraisers, field workers, consumer databases, and social-media and mobile contacts with the main Democratic voter files in the swing states.” The Obama analysis was so meticulous that they knew which celebrity and which type of celebrity event would help them maximize campaign contributions. With a single system, their data models became more precise. They determined which messages were more successful with specific demographic groups and that who made the calls mattered. Data analysis also led to many other changes in Obama’s campaign including a new ad buying strategy, using social media and applications to tap into supporters’ friends, and using new social news sites. While we did not have that same inside view into Romney’s campaign, much of the post-mortem coverage indicates that Romney’s team did not have the right analysis. As Peter Hamby of CNN wrote in Analysis: Why Romney Lost, “Romney officials had modeled an electorate that looked something like a mix of 2004 and 2008….” That historical data did not account for the changing demographics in the U.S. Does your organization approach data like the Obama or Romney team? Do you really know your base? How well can you predict what is going to happen in your business? If you haven’t already put together a strategy and plan to know more, this week’s civics lesson is a powerful reason to do it sooner rather than later. Your competitors are probably thinking the same thing that you are!
