  • Programming powering off and powering on in one single OnClick function on android

    I would like to write an activity that after clicking on a button turns off the screen and then turns it back on after 2 secs. I tried using the following code in order to power off the screen: WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes(); lp.screenBrightness = 0/(float)255; getWindow().setAttributes(lp); But it would only take effect when then onClick function returns. I tried running it into a handler but with no success. I need to find a way to force the setting to get applied before the function returns so that I can call the power on function 2 secs later on the same onClick call. I also found it very hard to wakeup the device afterwards. While this code works if I power off the screen using the physical button it doesn't seem to work when the phone is powered off using the technique described previously.   • Subsonic: Select on a View, locks the table update?

    Hi, I have a Web site live and running now. I am using the Subsonic to handle the database connections etc. I am getting time out expired error while updating a table (say Employee). When I check sp_who2, I see the suspended connection for the PID which is updating with a block by anothor pid, so I run the profiler and found out when ever this suspended connection occur, the blocked pid is a select statement on the view (say ActiveEmployees, which is the same as the table but with some where conditions). Anyone know why a Select statement on the view could cause failure in update. If it is other (like select fails due to update) may be reasonable. Is there any way for me to make select on a view without locking the table? PS: I am using the Sql server 2005 and subsonic 2.2. Thanks

  • Why won't Heroku accept my Gemfile.lock in Windows?

    I have a rails application that I deploy on Heroku. I'm using several different machines, and I noticed that when I add new dependencies (so that Gemfile.lock is rebuilt) and do bundle install on my Windows computer at home, push to Heroku fails with the following error: Unresolved dependencies detected; Installing... Windows Gemfile.lock detected, ignoring it. You have modified your Gemfile in development but did not check the resulting snapshot (Gemfile.lock) into version control ... Gemfile.lock IS under version control, but Heroku appearently chooses to ignore it since it's created in Windows, and then complains that it's missing seconds later. Why does this happen? And how can I solve it?

I also read about ReaderWriterLockSlim' and 'lock', but I don't figure out how to use them instead ofBlockingCollection`, so my question is can I do the same with: ReaderWriterLockSlim lock instead of using 'BlockingCollection'. If YES, can you please provide simple example and what pros and cons of using BlockingCollection, ReaderWriterLockSlim, lock?

    I'm writing a program which listens to an incoming TcpClient and handles data when it arrives. The Listen() method is run on a separate thread within the component, so it needs to be threadsafe. If I break out of a do while loop while I'm within a lock() statement, will the lock be released? If not, how do I accomplish this? Thanks!   • Text extra aliased(jagged) in IE - looks terrible - but OK in FF and Chrome

    I am building a website - http://www.efficaxdevelopment.com As you can see when you load the page(in IE) the text on the page that isn't an image or the menu looks terrible, while in FF and Chrome the text looks fine. you can view the source on the page and the css is here http://www.efficaxdevelopment.com/styles/mainstyle.css Also, the sliding bar over the menu appears a few pixels left of where it appears in FF and IE. Any ideas?

  • Editing files without race conditions?

    I have a CSV file that needs to be edited by multiple processes at the same time. My question is, how can I do this without introducing race conditions? It's easy to write to the end of the file without race conditions by open(2)ing it in "a" (O_APPEND) mode and simply write to it. Things get more difficult when removing lines from the file. The easiest solution is to read the file into memory, make changes to it, and overwrite it back to the file. If another process writes to it after it is in memory, however, that new data will be lost upon overwriting. To further complicate matters, my platform does not support POSIX record locks, checking for file existence is a race condition waiting to happen, rename(2) replaces the destination file if it exists instead of failing, and editing files in-place leaves empty bytes in it unless the remaining bytes are shifted towards the beginning of the file. In my opinion, these problems are brought on by the fact that the OS allows multiple writable file descriptors to be opened on the same file at the same time, instead of failing if a writable file descriptor is already open. It seems that O_CREAT|O_EXCL is the closest thing to a real solution for preventing filesystem race conditions, aside from POSIX record locks. Another possible solution is to separate the file into multiple files and directories, so that more granular control can be gained over components (lines, fields) of the file using O_CREAT|O_EXCL. For example, "file/$id/$field" would contain the value of column $field of the line $id. It wouldn't be a CSV file anymore, but it might just work. Yes, I know I should be using a database for this as databases are built to handle these types of problems, but the program is relatively simple and I was hoping to avoid the overhead. So, would any of these patterns work? Is there a better way? Any insight into these kinds of problems would be appreciated.

  • Outlook Signature Broken in Entourage

    Some of our company uses Windows with Outlook 2010, and the rest use Mac with Entourage. When our standard signature line is included in an email that goes to Entourage, the result does not display correctly. It appears that Entourage is mangling the HTML. My working theory is that Entourage encounters inline CSS styles it does not know about and stops processing styles, but I'm really not sure. Question: How can I enter a signature into Outlook 2010 that will render correctly in Entourage? For example, can I specify somehow the exact HTML to use? Here's an example of how the HTML is being changed.   • Lightweight spinlocks built from GCC atomic operations?

    I'd like to minimize synchronization and write lock-free code when possible in a project of mine. When absolutely necessary I'd love to substitute light-weight spinlocks built from atomic operations for pthread and win32 mutex locks. My understanding is that these are system calls underneath and could cause a context switch (which may be unnecessary for very quick critical sections where simply spinning a few times would be preferable). The atomic operations I'm referring to are well documented here: http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.4.1/gcc/Atomic-Builtins.html Here is an example to illustrate what I'm talking about. Imagine a RB-tree with multiple readers and writers possible. RBTree::exists() is read-only and thread safe, RBTree::insert() would require exclusive access by a single writer (and no readers) to be safe.     Disclaimer: I'm not very good at Java and just comparing read/writer locks between C# and Java to understand this topic better & decisions behind both implementations. There is JavaDoc about ReentrantReadWriteLock. It states the following about upgrade/downgrade for locks: Lock downgrading ... However, upgrading from a read lock to the write lock is not possible. It also has the following example that shows manual upgrade from read lock to write lock: // Here is a code sketch showing how to exploit reentrancy // to perform lock downgrading after updating a cache void processCachedData() { rwl.readLock().lock(); if (!cacheValid) { // upgrade lock manually #1: rwl.readLock().unlock(); // must unlock first to obtain writelock #2: rwl.writeLock().lock(); if (!cacheValid) { // recheck ... } ... } use(data); rwl.readLock().unlock(); Does it mean that actually the sample from above may not behave correctly in some cases - I mean there is no lock between lines #1 & #2 and underlying structure is exposed to changes from other threads.     This is going to be the fifth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here, here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use real fonts in HTML 5 pages with the use of CSS 3.Font issues have been appearing in all websites and caused all sorts of problems for web designers.The real problem with fonts for web developers until now was that they were forced to use only a handful of fonts.CSS 3 allows web designers not to use only web-safe fonts.These fonts are in wide use in most user's operating systems.Some designers (when they wanted to make their site stand out) resorted in various techniques like using images instead of fonts. That solution is not very accessible-friendly and definitely less SEO friendly.CSS (through CSS3's Fonts module) 3 allows web developers to embed fonts directly on a web page.First we need to define the font and then attach the font to elements.Obviously we have various formats for fonts. Some are supported by all modern browsers and some are not.The most common formats are, Embedded OpenType (EOT),TrueType(TTF),OpenType(OTF). I will use the @font-face declaration to define the font used in this page.  Before you download fonts (in any format) make sure you have understood all the licensing issues. Please note that all these real fonts will be downloaded in the client's computer.A great resource on the web (maybe the best) is http://www.typekit.com/.They have an abundance of web fonts for use. Please note that they sell those fonts.Another free (best things in life a free, aren't they?) resource is the http://www.google.com/webfonts website. I have visited the website and downloaded the Aladin webfont.When you download any font you like make sure you read the license first. Aladin webfont is released under the Open Font License (OFL) license. Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for web fonts from the latest versions of modern browsers.Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here.I create a simple HTML 5 page.   • Delphi / MySql : Problems escaping strings

    N00b here, having problems escaping strings. I used the QuotedStr() function - shouldn't that be enough. Unfortunately, the string that I am trying to quote is rather messy, but I will post it here in case anyone wants to paste it into WinMerge or KDiff3, etc. I am trying to store an entire Delphi form into the database, rather than into a .DFM file. It has only one field, a TEdit edit box.     N00b here, having problems escaping strings. I used the QuotedStr() function - shouldn't that be enough. Unfortunately, the string that I am trying to quote is rather messy, but I will post it here in case anyone wants to paste it into WinMerge or KDiff3, etc. I am trying to store an entire Delphi form into the database, rather than into a .DFM file. It has only one field, a TEdit edit box.     Hi, I've had a couple of Dl180 6g boxes hung over the last week, each have a P410 smart array controller. upon reboot the server has indicated that a controller failure event occurred and the previous lock up code was 0x15 - the server rebooted without issue. However there was nothing in the IML log, but the ADU report provided the following; Trap Address High Or Post Results Lockup Reason Or Post Error RIS Updates Or Post Error Detail Firmware Version Trap Address Low 0x8087 0x0015 0x0000033e 0x015e 0xd65c any suggestions on what that code is, my google fu failed. And hp support have not responded with any detail as yet.

  • In Ubuntu, how do I change my default Greek font?

    I'm taking a course in ancient Greek, and I store notes and flash cards on my computer. However, by default Ubuntu uses a modern Greek font. This changes some noticable things--for example, a circumflex is ? instead of a?. I can type the circumflex by switching back to english and entering the unicode combining character u0311 (which is what I just did to type the second a), but obviously this is very cumbersome. I've installed the "ttf-linex" package from the Ubuntu repositories, which claims to include an ancient Greek font. But I have no idea how to enable this font for whenever I switch to the Greek keyboard layout.

    I'm sick of Lucida Console font on my putty sessions. I used to love whatever font was employed on IBM rs/6000 consoles. Does anyone know the name of that font and if it is available (and usable) from anywhere? Sorry, I need to clarify the "consoles" to which I refer were not the serial consoles but rather smaller stand-alone X-Window systems. They could be setup without XDM and would start in text screen. I'm searching like crazy to find the actual machines I remember (there were hundreds of them at Uni) but I don't have the IBM #s in front of me. It looked amazingly similar to the PS/2 like this:

  • How can I make the icon font color on a windows 7 prof desktop work?

    I have C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Scenes\img25.jpg as wallpaper (I think it's a standard windows wallpaper.) The desktop icon font color is white. It cannot be read without heavy eye pain. I want it to be black. I couldn't change the icon font color in advanced properties (ie the good old window color settings dialog) for aero for windows 7 professional x32. I've heard that the icon font color should change automatically to suit my needs, it doesn't work as advertised in my scenario. How could I fix it and rescue my eyes from popping out?   • Per-character-set font size in Firefox not working?

    Firefox has a setting (Preferences - Content - Fonts & Colors - Advanced) that is supposed to let you set font preferences for different character sets. I've tried setting larger minimum font sizes for some non-Western character sets (I'm still learning, and have to see extra detail to tell them apart!) and nothing seems to happen. For example, if there's Hangul on a page (like this one), it will show in the same size as the Latin characters around it, even if I set "minimum font size" to 24. Am I misunderstanding how that setting is supposed to work, or does it just not do anything? Is there any other way to blow up only non-Western characters while leaving the letters I know how to read intact?
