  • Free or cheap Media(image) hosting for web application

    I am building a small social web application. I am developing it with rails. I want some cheap or free image hosting which I can use as my image repository for my website because I can't afford Amazon cloud store or something like that. Can I use flickr, imageshack or service something like that? Do they allow me to store images for my website? Suppose I wanna use pics for blogpost and I will be extracting pics from their api and show on my blog post. Is that possible? Sorry I'm beginner.

  • Video Bug in Ubuntu 12.10 MSI CX623 laptop

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyJkS8XjgA&feature=youtu.be I managed to take a video with what happens on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop when I play with the volume and hover with the mouse over the slider and when I press Ctrl + Alt + D (show Desktop/minimize all) The real bugs are those in which the panel becomes transparent on the down side, exactly above the volume slider (and not only when that slider appears, but also when brightness slider appears, and when blocking my touchpad applet appears) and when I have a maximized window, more maximized windows or a non maximized window that touches the panel, while I use Ctrl+Alt+D (show Desktop/hide all normal windows). Is there a way to solve this bug? PS: The other bugs are from Record My Desktop. I didn't have the mentioned bugs in ubuntu 12.04, but I like more the graphics in 12.10.

I have setup an old computer with the intent of sharing movies/music/photos with family members not in my house. I have been searching for over an hour and cannot find a complete guide from installation through user/folder setup to access via a computer not on the same network. Any assistance in this matter would be eternally appreciated.

  • Why can't I change my icon theme in gnome-classic?

    I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (updated) and gnome-classic (I missed it :3) I've tried setting my icon theme, GTK theme, and window theme in gnome-tweak-tool, as well as Ubuntu Tweak, gconf-editor, and dconf-editor. Even though it shows my selections are selected, the icons and themes stay the same. Any Help would be greatly appreciated! Update: I've tested things out on gnome-shell and Unity, and I have full control over icons and such in those environments, but still no control in gnome-classic. I would really like to figure this out. Update 2: It seems that after uninstalling Unity that I have full control over everything. Any explanation (since Unity or some part of it seemed to be the cause) would be really nice.

    I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now that I want to install a program through the terminal with a command starting with sudo, the terminal says Sorry, try again. I just don't get it, this is my user password which I check with through the Software Center. What can be then wrong? (Is it possible that the terminal function differently than the rest of the OS in relation to ASCII keyboard?) Please help.

  • Common folder in linux

    I have two users on my Ubuntu machine. I want to share some media files between these users, so I created a directory in /home/ called 'media'. I made the group 'media' and I added my user 'rks171' to the group 'media'. So: sudo groupadd media sudo mkdir -p /home/media sudo chown -R root.media /home/media sudo chmod g+s /home/media As was described in this post. Then, I added my user to the group: sudo usermod -a -G media rks171 Then I also added write permission to this folder for my group: sudo chmod -R g+w media So now, doing 'ls -lh' gives: drwxrwsr-x 2 root media 4.0K Oct 6 09:46 media I tried to copy pictures to this new directory from my user directory: mv /home/rks171/Pictures/* /home/media/ And I get 'permission denied'. I can't understand what's wrong. If I simply type, 'id', it doesn't show that my user, rks171, is part of the 'media' group. But if I type, 'id rks171', then it does show that my user, rks171, is part of the 'media' group. Anybody have any ideas why I can't get an files into this common folder?

    In the near future I am attempting to design a media server as a personal project. MY first consideration to get the project underway is architecture, it will certainly be web based but more specifically than that I am looking for suggestions on the database design. So far I am considering something like the following, where I am using [] to represent a table, the first text is the table name to give an idea of purpose and the items within {} would be fields of the table. Also not, fid is functional id referencing some other table. [Item {id, value/name, description, link, type}] - this could be any entity, single song or whole music album, game, movie - almost see this as a recursive relation, ie. a song is an item but an album that song is part of is also an item or for example a tv season is an item, with multiple items being tv episodes [Type {id, fid, mime type, etc}] - file type specific information - could identify how code handles streaming/sending this item to a user [Location {id, fid, path to file?}] [Users {id, username, email, password, ...? }] - user account information [UAC {id, fid, acess level}] - i almost feel its more flexible to seperate access control permissions form the user accounts themselves [ItemLog {id, fid, fid2, timestamp}] - fid for user id, and fid2 for item id - this way we know what user access what when [UserLog {id, fid, timestamp}] -both are logs for access, whether login or last item access [Quota {id, fid, cap}] - some sort of way to throttle users from queing up the entire site and letting it download ... Suggestions or comments are welcome as the hope is that this project will be a open source project once some code is laid out.

    Hello! I'm a fledgling in the Android and Eclipse ways. I was reading and downloaded the source code for a Streaming Media Player tutorial from Pocket Journey, here. However, when I try to run it through the "Run As..." or "Debug As..." features in Eclipse, the emulator reports: "Sorry! The application Android Tutorials (process com.pocketjourney.tutorials) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." Now, from stepping through the Tutorial 1 activity (for those of you that may be familiar with it), it seems something funky happens here: button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View view) { Toast.makeText(Tutorial1.this, "Button Clicked",Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); }}); My questions are: What's up with that line? Apparently, other comments haven't had this problem; am I missing some library that I should be downloading from someplace? How should I go about debugging this other than/in addition to stepping through code? I'm used to Visual Studio, which has a nice box with exception details for me to sift through and copy/paste to google with. Eclipse debugging showed a "No Source Code" page, or a list of exceptions. I've heard of something called LogCat; is that relevant here? Thanks in advance!

  • Difficulty restoring a differential backup in SQL Server, 2 media families are expected or no files

    I have sql backups copied from server A to server B on a nightly basis. We want to move the sql server from server A to server B without much downtime, but the files are very large. I assumed that performing a differential backup and restore would solve the problem with the databases. Copy full backup from server A to copy to server B (10+gb) Open SQL Server Managment Studio on server B Right mouse on databases Restore Database Type in the new DB-name Choose "From Device" and browse to the backup file Click Okay. This is now resorting the original "full" backup. Test new db with dev application - everything works :) On original database rightmouse on DB Tasks Backup... Backup Type = Differential, Backup to disk, add a new file, and remove the old one (it needs to be a small file to transfer for the smallest amount of outage) Copy the diff backup onto the new db Right mouse on DB Tasks Restore Database This is where I get stuck. If I add both the new differential file, and the original backup to the restore process I get an error The media loaded on "M:\path\to\backup\full.bak" is formatted to support 1 media families, but 2 media families are expected according to the backup device specification. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. But if I try to restore using just the differential file I get System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The log or differential backup cannot be restored because no files are ready to rollforward. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Any idea how to do it? Is there a better way of restoring backups with limited downtime?

  • Verification of files on backup media - after the backup

    I have a system in place where I back up my work files daily to a portable hard drive. I actually have two portable hard drives - one is stored off-site and I swap them regularly. I also keep my family photos and other historical files backed up, but I only back the photos up occasionally (ie when I have new photos). The backup media is for backup only, and it is unlikely I will ever read the files from the backup media unless a disaster occurs and I lose the master. It worries me that my backed up files could become corrupt without me knowing it. It is also feasible that my master files could become corrupt, and eventually the corrupt files would be replicated to the backup media. I'm currently using Cobian Backup, but I'm open to alternatives. Is there a tool I can use to confirm that the backed up files are identical to the files that were first copied? I know it would be possible to generate a checksum and periodically validate the backup files against the original checksum, but I'm looking for a tool which will do this automatically.

  • If You Could Cut Your Meeting Times in ½ Would You?

                    I know it sounds like a big promise. And what I'm thinking about may not cut a :60 minute meeting into :30 minutes, but it could make meetings and interactions up to 2X more productive. How? Social Media for the Enterprise, Not Social Media In the Enterprise Bear with me. I'm not talking about whether or not workers should or shouldn't have access to Facebook on corporate networks. That topic has been discussed @ length. I'm also not talking about the direct benefits of Social Networking tools like Presence (the ability to see someone online and ask a question in real-time), blogs, RSS feeds or external tools like Twitter. The Un-Measurable Benefits Would you do something that you believe will have a positive effect--but can't be measured? It's impossible to quantify the effectiveness of a meeting. However, what I am talking about would be more of a byproduct of all of the social networking tools above. Here's the hypothesis: As I've gotten more and more busy with work, family, travel and kids--and the same has happened to my friends and family--I'm less and less connected. But by introducing Facebook to my life I've not only made connections with longtime friends whom I haven't spoken to in years--but I've increased the pace and quality of interactions, on and offline, with close friends who I see and speak to every week. In some cases it even enhances the connections and interactions with those I see or speak to every day. The same holds true in an organization. Especially a larger one with highly matrixed organizational structures. You work with people on a project, new people come in with each different project and a disproportionate amount of time is spent getting oriented and staying current. Going back to the initial value proposition--making meetings shorter/more effective--a large amount of time is spent: -          At Project Kick-off: Meeting and understanding team member's histories, goals & roles -          Ongoing: Summarizing events since the last meeting or update email In my personal, Facebook life today I know that: -          My best friend from college - has been stranded in India for 5 days because of the volcano in Iceland and is now only 250 miles from home -          One of my co-workers started conference calls at 6:30 this morning -          My wife wasn't terribly pleased with my painting skills in our new bathroom (disclosure: she told me this face to face too) Strengthening Weak Links A recent article in CIO Magazine, Three Dangerous Social Media Misconceptions (Kristen Burnham, March 12, 2010) calls out the #1 misconception as follows: 1. "Face-to-face relationships are far more valuable than virtual ones." While some level of physical interaction will always add value to relationships, Gartner says that come 2020, most relationships and teams will be based on "weak links"--that is, you may not have personally met a contact, but you'll know of or may have interacted with him via social sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. The sooner your enterprise adopts these tools, the sooner your employees will learn them, and the sooner you'll begin to cultivate these relationships-of-the-future.   I personally believe that it's not an either/or choice between face-to-face and virtual interactions. In fact, I'll be as bold as saying it doesn't matter. I can point to two extremely valuable work relationships that I've had over the past 5 years: -          I shared an office with one of them -          I met the other person, face-to-face, only once Both relationships were very productive. The dynamics were similar. The communication tactics differed immensely. What does matter is the quality, frequency and relevance of interactions. Still sound like too much? An over-promise?   • Linux accessibility: Slow Keys causing duplicate key strokes

    I'm exploring the accessibility features within Gnome and having trouble with Slow Keys. My input is always doubled. Press a key briefly and I get nothing as you'd expect. Press just a bit longer and which ever key I'm pressing is input twice. Hello becomes HHeelllloo. I'm running Debian Lenny 5.0.6, kernel 2.6.26-2-686, GNOME Desktop 2.22.3 running within a VirtualBox session. I did some googling and didn't find others having similar troubles. Maybe it's a vbox thing? Any ideas how to fix this so I don't get the duplicates? It makes it impossible to log back in when the screen lock kicks on!

  • Diverting sound output of MCE to SPDIF

    I have an ASUS SupremeFX II audio card (which in fact is an onboard audio riser slot) with the default drivers that are pre-installed by Windows 7 x64 for this card. I am able to manually switch between analog output and SPDIF output by the means of control panel (or external utilities like STADS), a change that affects all applications. The problem is that by doing that every time I am about to launch Windows Media Center, except that it's not that elegant, also makes all other Windows application's sounds to pass through SPDIF too, bypassing analog output completely, blending with what I am watching at Windows Media Center. Is there a way to make SPDIF as the default playback device for Windows Media Center? I know other programs that have a setting like that (foobar2000 for example) working like charm, allowing me to even have different outputs working at the same time (tested with my current card successfully). But when comes to Windows Media Center... it just use what the default playback device is all the time. The only setting that I know of, is under: Settings General Windows Media Center Setup Set Up Your Speakers and what it does is to just change the default playback device for entire system. Please help!

  • Eclipse And Linux: Keyboard unusable after gnome-screen-saver

    Hi, I know this is not programming related. But I can't find any topics on Google or UbuntuForums. So the problem is: When gnome-screensaver starts on the moment Eclipse has the focus and I wake up again my laptop, Eclipse doesn't listen to keyboard-events. To solve this I have to change the focus to another program and then back to Eclipse. Than it works again. This isn't a real problem, but it would be nice if someone can solve it. Thanks

  • Can't the NetworkManager applet to appear in the Gnome panel in Ubuntu

    I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

  • Compiz command plugin won't register keyboard shortcuts

    Per this discussion I've enabled the Compiz commands plugin in order to try to bind some keyboard shortcuts to wmctrl actions. CCSM captures my keystrokes just fine, but no matter what keystroke I try or what command I bind it to (everything from my original intention of binding Super-1, Super-2 etc. to wmctrl -o 0,0, wmctrl -o 2560,0, etc., to binding Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L to gnome-terminal). Basic compiz shortcuts for window switching and so on -- even custom ones -- seem to work fine, but the command plugin doesn't seem to be working at all. I also notice the following symptom: when I open the keyboard shortcut tab in CCSM, the keyboard shortcuts often at first appear blank, though if you click on the blank button, the correct value is still there. Also possibly related, I've noticed that gnome-terminal doesn't seem to notice the Super key, though other apps (e.g. CCSM, Emacs) register it fine. Anyway, it seems like something's eating my keystrokes. Any ideas?

    I have two versions of emacs available to me on a locked workstation: $ /usr/local/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 22.3.1 $ /usr/bin/emacs --version GNU Emacs 21.4.1 In both cases, my terminal type is xterm when I run either version of emacs. When I run the v21 version of emacs, I get syntax coloring for Perl, HTML, and other modes. When I run the v22 version, I do not get syntax coloring. I would like to migrate from the v21 version because the combination of v21 emacs, GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen is eating Ctrl-arrow key chords, which prevents me from moving quickly between words. (OS X Terminal and GNU Screen do not have this issue.) The v22 version allows use of Ctrl-arrow key combinations with GNOME Terminal and GNU Screen. How do I fix the v22 version (or ask my sys admin to fix) so that it once again highlights syntax and allows me to use Ctrl-arrow key combinations?

  • Gnome 3 screensaver (not suspend) resume hook?

    Since whenever my laptop screen resumes sleeping (i.e. wakes up from screensaving) some settings are reset, such as keyboard backlight, I'd like to run some scripts each time this happens. I'm using gnome 3 with fedora 17 by the way. When researching this issue I came across pm-utils which allows one to hook anything to events handled by pm-utils but it seems to me monitor sleeping (i.e. screensaving) is not one of them. Looks like pm-utils only handles suspend and hybernate. So is there a way to hook up custom programs to screensaver?
