  • Apache MaxClients reaching max and locking the server

    Hi. I currently have an Apache2 server running with mpm-prefork and mod_php on a OpenVZ VPS with 512M real / 1024M burstable RAM (no swap). After running some tests, I found that the maximum process size Apache gets is 23M, so I've set MaxClients to 25 (23M x 25 = 575 MB, ok for me). I decided to run some load tests on my server, and the results left me puzzled. I'm using ab on my desktop machine requesting the main page from a wordpress blog. When I run ab with 24 concurrent connections, everything seems fine. Sure, CPU goes up, free RAM goes down, and the result is about 2-3s response time per request. But if I run ab with 25 concurrent connections (my server limit), Apache just hangs after a couple of seconds. It starts processing the requests, then it stops responding, CPU goes back to 100% idle and ab times out. Apache log says it reached MaxClients. When this happens, Apache keeps itself locked up with 25 running processes (they're all in "W" if I check server status) and only after the TimeOut setting the processes start to die and the server starts responding again (in my case it's set to 45). My question: is that expected behaviour? Why Apache just dies when it reaches MaxClients? If it works with 24 connections, shouldn't it work with 25, just taking maybe more time to respond each request and queueing up the rest? It sounds kinda strange to me that any kid running ab can alone kill a webserver just by setting the concurrent connections to the servers MaxClients.

    After I start Xampp on my Ubuntu 12.04 I go to the localhost and I come to the site, where all languages are listed .... when I click any of these languages nothing happens. Follow steps are already done: I started Xampp with: sudo /opt/lamp/lamp start after doing so, I get in the console, that everything is running: Starting XAMPP for Linux ... XAMPP: Starting Apache...ok. XAMPP: Starting MySQL... ok. XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...ok. Can you please help me solve this problem?

  • Virtualbox HTTP load testing, host CPU overload issues

    I'm doing HTTP load testing benchmarks (using Apache Benchmark and Siege) on a small Java EE 1.7.0 / Tomcat 7.0.26 application running on a Debian Squeeze 6.0.4 x64 virtualized with Virtualbox 4.1.8. The computer host is Ubuntu 11.10 x64. I've modified those parameters in the Tomcat server.xml : <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="200000" redirectPort="8443" acceptCount="2000" maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="50" /> The application executed on the server takes around 300ms. This app is running well until a certain amount of concurrent connections like those one : ab -n 500 -c 150 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ ab -n 1000 -c 50 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ siege -b -c 100 -r 20 http://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/myapp/ A lot of socket connection timed out happens and this completly overload the host processor (but the CPU load inside the VM is normal). Doing an htop on the host, i can see that the Virtualbox processus is running under 300% CPU and never come down even after the load test is finished. (I've allocated 4 processors to the VM, if I allocate only one processor, CPU load goes under 100%). Restarting Tomcat don't do anything, i'm forced to restart the whole VM. I've tryed to launch those ab/siege commands locally on the VM and everything goes well. I first thought it was related to a linux network limit as explained here: Running some benchmarks using ab, and tomcat starts to really slow down So I've modified those TCP parameters : echo 15 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout echo 30 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_keepalive_intvl echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_reuse It seems to be better, but it continues to overload the host CPU and output socket connections time out at a certain amount of concurrent connections. I'm wondering if this is not related to how Virtualbox handles external concurrent connections.

    I have a few questions, please help: Fist, I can access google search just by typing http://74.125.224.211 because this is the ip address returned by nslookup. However, I could not do so with ip addresses returned from www.yahoo.com. How do I go to yahoo search page by its ip ? Another example, http://www.allaboutcircuits.com will resolve to 68.233.243.63 by DNS server, but if I go to http://68.233.243.63 I got "Hello world!" , lol ! Second, for some reason, there is something wrong with DNS resolvers with my web hosting service (it will not be fixed !!). So command like, get_file_contents("http://www.allaboutcircuits.com"); will return php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known How do I get around this with IP address , 68.233.243.63 I mean somehow attach the HTTP hostname parameter to get_file_contents() ? I would like to solve this on my own side (in my code), no troubleshooting/adjustment will be done by server admin.

  • Max. Bandwidth Cannot be Reached

    I have a question regarding the bandwidth usage. I don't think it's a very technical question but I really want to know the reason behind the problem. I'm having my education in one of my university's campuses. There is a 200mbps bandwidth availability for approx. 2100 students. Our main campus has 25,000 students and 2gbps bandwidth and there is no problem with the internet connection speed in main campus. However, in my campus, we are having difficulties with the internet connection speed. I went to IT department of my university and they've showed me some graphics about the bandwidth usage. The usage of the bandwidth has never reached 200mbps and it generally is around 130-140mbps. According to this information, maximum bandwidth is never made by the users but the browsing speed is not very convincing. What can be the problem? Maybe this is a silly question but I really want to know the reason. They told me that they've reached 180mbps before.

Few users mainly use Yahoo Web mail for Spamming and We need to block yahoo web mail access only ( complete yahoo website is also Ok) through our proxy . specially .mail.yahoo.com.. Like - we need to block URL like - http://uk-mg61.mail.yahoo.com http://in-mg61.mail.yahoo.com etc. etc. Note : We generaly open http://mail.yahoo.com in browser - but after loggin in it forwards it to Urls like above but all those are subdomain of mail.yahoo.com My target is if we can get all IP list for all available subdomain of mail.yahoo.com I can block it totally . We can only use IPTABLE ...I know using proxy itself we can check HTTP header and check Host field for .mail.yahoo.com. and block it. Solution : Follwoign what I did using IPtable . I collected IP CIDR block for yahoo mainly for yahoo web mail ( mail.yahoo.com ) as much as possible ( using linux host and whois command ) [ like 66.163.160.0/19 nd 98.136.0.0/14 etc ] and applied follwing command Like iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d 66.163.160.0/19 -m state --state NEW -j DROP etc. Things are working fine. user can not access yahoo mail BUT the problem is I need to be updated with the avaialble CIDR YAHOO IP list ... I am ready to do it every week. I collected many from Net... You know theer are countles subdomain of mail.yahoo.com and seems every week Yahoo adding new IP... But what I observed some time user can bypass our rule and the reason obvously all the avaialble Ips are not entered in IPtable yet. What we need to do is enter all Ips of mail.yahoo.co But where do I find all subdomain for mail.yahoo.com I know we can get it from DNS but I must not be allowed to make DNS axfr query. Also doing reverse DNS will have performance issue. I want to know all subdomain of .mail.yahoo.c Can I get it from yahoo site. I have the list of all YAHOO smtp IP....but I need webmail Ip...   • XP IIS no longer listen to port 80 or 443 after installing Oracle 9i HTTP Server

    I have installed Oracle 9i HTTP Server together with the database. After restarting the PC, even though i restarted the IIS and stopped the Oracle HTTP Server. When I go to http://localhost/ The starting page is already the Oracle HTTP Server index page. Also when I look at the port that inetinfo.exe is listening to, it no longer listens to port 80 and the SSL port 443, even if i restart the IIS and World Wide Web Publishing service. Any idea what setting did oracle changed when I installed oracle 9i? The executable associated with the OracleOraHome90HTTPServer is C:\oracle\ora90\Apache\Apache\Apache.exe I already checked the tasklist and Apache is really not running. But there is no process listening to port 80 still even if the IIS restarts successfully. Any ideas how to fix this?

    I've upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 beta 1 and PHP got upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3 Now all my WordPress & Magento sites arent working. I tried retrieving the URL headers from the command line, but HTTP request fails. Utilizing get_headers in a small script, PHP Warning: get_headers(http://local.vhosts1.com): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! in get_headers.php on line 12 But HTTP request fails only for WordPress and Magento based sites - not custom written ones. Does this probably have to do with some htaccess directive ?

  • java max heap size, how much is too much

    I'm having issues with a JRuby (rails) app running in tomcat. Occasionally page requests can take up to a minute to return (even though the rails logs processed the request in seconds so it's obviously a tomcat issue). I'm wondering what settings are optimal for the java heap size. I know there's no definitive answer, but I thought maybe someone could comment on my setup. I'm on a small EC2 instance which has 1.7g ram. I have the following JAVA_OPTS: -Xmx1536m -Xms256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled My first thought is that Xmx is too high. If I only have 1.7gb and I allocated 1.5gb to java, i feel like I'll get a lot of paging. Typically my java process shows (in top) 1.1g res memory and 2g virtual. I also read somewhere that setting the Xms and Xmx to the same size will help as it eliminates time spend on memory allocation. I'm not a java person but I've been tasked with figuring out this problem and I'm trying to find out where to start. Any tips are greatly appreciated!! update I've started analyzing the garbage collection dumps using -XX:+PrintGCDetails When i notice these occasional long load times, the gc logs go nuts. the last one I did (which took 25s to complete) I had gc log lines such as: 1720.267: [GC 1720.267: [DefNew: 27712K->16K(31104K), 0.0068020 secs] 281792K->254096K(444112K), 0.0069440 secs] 1720.294: [GC 1720.294: [DefNew: 27728K->0K(31104K), 0.0343340 secs] 281808K->254080K(444112K), 0.0344910 secs] about 300 of them on a single request!!! Now, I don't totally understand why it's always GC'ng from ~28m down to 0 over and over.

    My url scheme is /foo/var1-var2-var3.../bar I am using these mod_rewrite rules: RewriteBase /foo/ RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^ index.php [PT,L] If the length of the string 'var1-var2...' is greater than 257 characters then an error 403 Forbidden and a 404 are returned. However, if the length of the 'var1-var2...' string is 257 characters or less and subsequently followed by a slash the length of the remaining url may be any length. How does one overcome this limit?

  • apt-get 403 Forbidden

    I've start a new job today and I am trying to set up my machine to run through their Windows server. I've managed to get a internet connection through the server now but now I can't run apt-get update as I get a "403 Forbidden" error. This is for every repo under my source list, apart from translations(?). I do have a proxy in apt.conf, if I don't have it I get a 407 Permission Denied error. Because of the changes made to Web API after beta, my current bits don’t build against the CodePlex version anymore. Today I installed a build environment for the CodePlex bits, and migrated my code. It turns out the changes are pretty easy: Simply replace Request.GetUserPrincipal() with Thread.CurrentPrincipal ;) I will update the repo when RC comes out.

    I have tried installing age of empires 2 using PlayOnLinux, the installation appeared to go fine but when I try and open the game it says there is a serious fault.
