• Moving Webdav app from Win server 2k to Win server 2k3 now getting authentication issues.

  I have an intranet web app that uses CSS httpFolder to map a webdav folder to an IFrame on a web page. The user then can drop files in the frame and the page processes them when the user presses the button. This works well on a Win 2k SP4 server running IIS 5. I have moved the app over to a Win 2k3 server running IIS 6. I have made sure the WebDAV extensions are allowed. I have set everything else in IIS to match the original installation on the old server. But when I try to access the WebDAV folder I am repeatedly prompted for my login credentials. I use my domain admin login but even that doesn't work. What am I missing? What differences are there between WebDAV on 2k vs 2k3? TIA John

• Storing search result for paging and sorting

  I've been implementing MS Search Server 2010 and so far its really good. Im doing the search queries via their web service, but due to the inconsistent results, im thinking about caching the result instead. The site is a small intranet (500 employees), so it shouldnt be any problems, but im curious what approach you would take if it was a bigger site. I've googled abit, but havent really come over anything specific. So, a few questions: What other approaches are there? And why are they better? How much does it cost to store a dataview of 400-500 rows? What sizes are feasible? Other points you should take into consideration. Any input is welcome :)

• Authenticating mssql users through different logins

  I'm developing a new node.js based frontend for an old intranet site using mssql server and Classic ASP. Both the new and the old site will coexist during the transition phase and both must access the same mssql server using the same database principals. The old ASP/IIS site uses integrated windows login. The new node-based frontend has to use sql server based logins/principals (edit: while the IIS/ASP site must keep using Windows server principals) and all existing database users/principals must keep working wherever they login from. From reading around, it appears that a database principal can not be assigned to multiple server principals, therefore it seems unlikely there's a simple solution to this. I'd like to know if anybody has had to deal with a similar situation before and how they've gone about it.

• Learning curve webdevelopment

  At the moment our team has a huge challenge, we're being asked to deliver a new GUI for an embedded controller. De deadline is very tight and is set on april 2013. Our team is very diverse some people are on the level of functional programming (mostly C), others (including myself) also master object oriented programming (C++, C#). We build a prototype with android, although it has its quirks it is mostly just OO. For the future there is a wish to support multiple platforms (Windows, Android, iOS). In my opinion a HTML5 app with a native app shell is the way to go. When gathering more information on the frameworks to use etc it becomes obvious to me a paradigm shift is needed. None of us have a web background so we need to learn from the ground up. The shift from functional to oo took us about 6 months to become productive (and some of the early subsystems were rewritten because they were a total mess) . Can we expect the learning curve to be similar? Can this be pulled off with a webapp? (My feeling says it will already be hard to pull off as a native app which is at the edge of our comfort zone)

  I working on an intranet project for IE6 (i know...) and I need to output some HTML code from a div. I use $('#output').text($('#container').html()); But IE6 outputs all the code in uppercase: <TABLE> <TR> <TD>test</TD> </TR> </TABLE> How can I convert HTML tags to lowercase using jQuery? Would be useful to have a plugin that could recursively go trough the DOM-tree.

• Suggestions for a Self-serv advertising service

  I am seeking a self-serv advertising service for my websites, but I have a few restrictions that seem to make what i'm looking for hard to find. Specifically, I want to place "advertise here" links on my pages and allow end-users to purchase advertising on that site, page, and location. These ads will not be part of a national network. Supports multi-tenancy - That is, I have a number of domains using the same "web application" but with customized content per domain. When a customer wants to advertise on a given domain, then the ads will only appear on that domain and on that page of the domain (even though the page name may be the same across multiple domains). Supports fixed ad prices, not just CPC. I need monthly and quarterly pricing regardless of performance. Integrates with OpenX and other ad networks, so that if there is no self-serv on a given zone, it will use national advertising or direct advertising. Shiny Ads has much of this, but i'm looking for alternatives, as their prices are a bit crazy (20%) and can only do PayPal.

  Yesterday I spent the longest day at this TechEd: we talked with many people at Community Night until 9pm and I have to say that just a few months after Analysis Services 2012 has been released, there are many people already using it. And the adoption of PowerPivot is starting to be quite large. Many new ideas and challenging coming from several different real world scenarios. I was tired but really happy. Alberto presented his Many-to-Many Relationships in BISM Tabular session that was in the same time slot of the BI Power Hour. For this reason, very few people attended Alberto’s session so I think many will watch the recorded session (it should be available within a few days). So what about today? I’ll spend some time at Technical Learning Center area (full schedule here) but the most important event today will be the Querying multi-billion rows with many to many relationships in SSAS Tabular (xVelocity) at the Private Cloud, Public Cloud and Data Platform Theater in the Technical Learning Center area (next to the SQL Server 2012 zone).  Why you should attend? Mainly because you will see live demo over 4 billion rows table with many-to-many relationships involved in complex queries. • HTML: adjusting the font size according to the screen size

  I am building an intranet website that is intended to be seen by mobile phones using one of the following resolutions: 240x320, 320x240, 360x640 and 800x352. All content is to be seen covering the full screen. No scroll should be necessary. I have developed, initially for 360x640. When this content is seen on 240x320 or 320x240 the letter is too big and the user has to scroll to see all content. Is there any way to scale the letters down or up automatically, so the content will fit on every screen size? I mean, adjusting the text font size according to the current screen resolution? thanks for any help.

  Issue We have a series of websites built in ASP.NET that we deploy frequently. Due to the lack of a QA team, we are unable to test the functionality and load of every web page within the site. Question What are some of the top tools for doing QA testing. The tool should include some basic functionality, such as: Notifying parties when unexpected results occur.   Here's our scenario: We've created a sharepoint 2007 calendar on our intranet site We want to run a daily job to export a subset of the events to an rss file Another job will move the rss file to our public web site We have some funny restrictions where we can't simply publish the rss feed to the public. We have to go this export route. I'm not clear on how to accomplish step 2. Ideally, we wouldn't have to write a lot of custom code to accomplish this. Thanks.

• Autocomplete jQuery 1.8-UI JSON Format

  I'm toying with the new autocomplete in jQuery 1.8-UI. I've provided data in the following format ["val1", "val2", "val3"] This is coming from a stored procedure but output as a string. For some reason this doesn't work at all, however, if I supply the same data using a javascript variable var data = ["val1", "val2", "val3"]; Then this works fine. <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() $("#txtClient").autocomplete({ source: "/intranet/common/scripts/IntranetLists.aspx?ListType=C" }); }); </script> I've got a page which supplies whatever data I want using query strings. It's more temporary, but it worked when I previously used bassistence's autocomplete. Any ideas?

• How do I tell which account is trying to access an ASP.NET web service?

  I'm getting a 401 (access denied) calling a method on an internal web service. I'm calling it from an ASP.NET page on our company intranet. I've checked all the configuration and it should be using integrated security with an account that has access to that service, but I'm trying to figure out how to confirm which account it's connecting under. Unfortunately I can't debug the code on the production network. In our dev environment everything is working fine. I know there has to be a difference in the settings, but I'm at a loss with where to start. Any recommendations?

• Keeping asp.net mvc site IIS6 always ready to accept requests

  I have asp.net mvc intranet site that is deployed to IIS6. Site is used rarely so app pool tends to shutdown. When user click the page for the very first time 5-10 seconds are passed till page appears (app pool started and site is compiled). Situation repeats for the next page and so on. AFAIK IIS7 has option to disable App pool shutdown but IIS6 lacks it. Nowadays i have special utility that pings site periodically (10 pages) in order to determine if pages are available and keeps site always ready for users this way. Is it normal or may be I've missed something in IIS6 configuration? Do you use such pinger apps in production to notify support/admins if site is not available? Thank you in advance!

  Does anyone know how MessageBox(...) could fail silently? MessageBox(g_hMainhWnd, buffer, "Oops!", MB_OK | MB_ICONERROR); ShellExecute(0, "open", "http://intranet/crash_handler.php", NULL, "", SW_SHOWNORMAL); For a little context, this code is called inside our own exception handler, which was registered with SetUnhandledExceptionFilter() Most of the time, I see the message box, and then it launches a web browser. However, I have an exe, which as far as I'm aware uses this exact code, and it successfully launches the web browser, but I do not see the message box first. Thanks Tim

• Pagebreak (or table break?) to obtain a good formated PDF

  Hi! I had develop an intranet on CakePHP witch in one part generates a custom PDF using DOMPDF. The problem is that i have a memo field (mysql text) witch i print after getting the result from PHP nl2br function. The problems is that in some ocasions, this text is too long (even on font-size: 6px) and i need some way to make a page break (get again de header, and footer etc)... or maybe a nice way to get a second column to continue with the text inside. any ideas? thanks so much

• Can it be a good idea to lease a house rather than a standard office-space for a software development shop? [closed]

  Our lease is up on our US-based office-space in July, so it's back on my radar to evaluate our office-space situation. Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time. Pros, as I see them Easier to get a good location (minimize commutes) All partners/employees have dogs. Easier to work longer hours without dog-duties pulling people back home More comfortable bathroom situation Residential Internet Rate Control of the thermostat Clients don't come to our office, so this would not change our image The additional comfort-level should facilitate a significantly higher-percentage of time "in the zone" for programmers and artists. Cons, as I see them Additional bills to pay (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional time-overhead in dealing with bills (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional overhead required to deal with issues that maintenance would have dealt with in a standard office-space Residential neighbors to contend with The equation starts to look a little nasty when factoring in potential time-overhead, especially on issues that a maintenance crew would deal with at a standard office complex. Can this be a good thing for a software development shop?

  How do i make my vb.net application (running on intranet) compatible with all the browsers. The problem is all the text boxes and drop downs size varies when I browse the application in different browsers. For example when I browse in Chrome all the drop downs size changes and textbox becomes small.In IE8 all the dropdowns , comboboxes and the size of the grids gets changed. The combobox in firefox and IE 7 or later gets small in size.Is there any solution for this. And also I would like to add , the application works perfectly with IE6 only.

• Querying Active Directory in ruby app on Windows box

  I have a small ruby app in which I'm trying to query some information from Active Directory. The app will be run by a Windows user who is already logged in. It looks like the ruby-net-ldap gem wants me to connect to an LDAP server using an IP address, port and then pass my username and password. Is there a way to achieve this (with a different gem, say) so that I don't have to pass this information (I don't have the current user's password for example, so that's not going to work)? I'm also hosting a Trac website on our intranet (which is written in Python if I remember correctly and that seems to know the current Windows username and domain. If it can do it, surely my little ruby app can access this information too?

  Hi, Right now, I have all the employees of my company login to an external website using the company id, username and a password. We are trying to integrate it into an intranet portal which should provide seamless access to this website without requiring the user to enter these credentials. Is there any way of doing this programmatically (.NET C#)? Very similar to screenscraping, Can I simulate the appropriate POST action and then redirect the user to the logged in page? • Can I use WCF NET.TCP Protocol from Silverlight 4 for a public website ?

  Does anyone know if the new NET.TCP feature of Silverlight 4 can be used for public websites ? From what I know, in the Silverlight 4 Beta they announced that WCF NET.TCP can only be used for intranet applications. The reason I am asking this is because I want to recode my Silverlight multiplayer chess game (build with SL 3 Sockets support) based on the new SL 4 WCF TCP communication protocol. My Socket implementation is build from scratch and have big issues with thread safe and few unsolvable bugs from my side. I am sure that SL 4 team did a great job and they simplified all hard part for me, letting us, developers, concentrate more on the game code instead on underlying communication layers.

• NTLM Authentication fails ONLY with IE against 2k8 App server behind 2k8 IIS7 Reverse Proxy

  I'm developing an ASP.NET application for an intranet site that is using Windows/NTLM/WIA/whatever authentication. The application is hosted on a Windows 2k8 server but is accessed through a Reverse Proxy using IIs7 on another 2k8 machine. Authentication works fine in FireFox, Chrome and Safari but fails in IE8. If I circumvent the Proxy and access the application server directly then it works fine so it has something to do with proxy. There's nothing in the Event Viewer on any of the 3 machines to indicate what might be happening. If you connect using IE8 it prompts for your credentials instead of automatically passing them, yes I've setup an explicit trust over an above the domain trust, but it still errors out with a 401 error returned from the proxy. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting this?

• Performance impact of Zones.

  I was really astonished when i saw this question. Because this question was a old acquaintance from years ago, that i didn't heard for a long time. However there was it again. The question: "What's the overhead of Zones?". Sun was and Oracle is not saying "zero". We saying saying minimal. However during all the performance analysis gigs on customer systems i made since the introduction of Zones i failed to measure any overhead caused by zones. What i saw however, was additional load intoduced by processes that wouldn't be there when you would use only one zone Like additional monitoring daemons, like additional daemons having a controlling or supervising job for the application that resulted in slighly longer runtimes of processes, because such additional daemons wanted some cycles on the CPU as well. So i ask when someone wants to tell me that he measured a slight slowdown, if he or she has really measured the impact of the virtualization layer or of a side effect described above. It seems to be a little bit hard to believe, that a virtualisation technology has no overhead, however keep in mind that there is no hypervisor and just one kernel running that looks and behaves like many operating system instances to apps and users. While this imposes some limits to the technology (because there is just one kernel running you can't have zones with different kernels versions running ... obvious even to the cursory observer), but that is key to it's lightweightness and thus to the low overhead. • Should I expect my peers to read or practice on a regular basis? [closed]

  I've been debating asking this question for some time. Based several of the comments I read in this question I decided I had to ask. This feels like I'm stating the obvious, but I believe that regular reading (of books, blogs, StackOverflow, whatever) and/or practice are required just to stay current (let alone excel) in whichever stack you use to pay the bills, not to mention playing with things outside your comfort zone to learn new ways of doing things. Yet, I virtually never see this from many of my peers. Even when I go out of my way to point out useful (and almost always free) learning material, I quite often get a sense of total apathy from those I'm speaking to. I'd even go so far as to say that if someone doesn't try to improve (or at least stay current), they'll atrophy as technology advances and actually become less useful to the company. I don't expect people to spend hours a day studying or practicing. I have two young kids and hours of practice simply aren't feasible. Still, I find some time; perhaps on the train, at lunch, in bed for a few minutes, whatever. I'm willing to believe this is arrogance or naivete on my part, but I'd like to hear what the community has to say. So here's my question: Should I expect (and encourage) the same from my peers, or just keep my mouth shut and do my own thing?
