• Two UIViews in one .xib file?

  hi, i made a second uiview in mei .xib file. the first view is landscape and i get it by following code ItemController *newItem; newItem = [[ItemController alloc] init]; newItem.view..... how can i "activate" the second view, so i can use it with newItem.view2... is that possible? the second view is portait mode, so it should be hidden and when turning the ipad the first view should be hidden and the second gets visible. thanks

• iPad/iPhone: Form filling application pointers

  Folks, I am starting work on an iPad/iPhone application that is essentially a form-filing UI. The requirement is to present a (rather large) form to the user. The form is composed of sections and questions, like so: Form Question 0.1 Question 0.2 Section 1 Question 1.1 etc. The user can take various paths down the form based on answers to questions. I would like to architect this by defining a declarative markup that can be used to author the form questionnaire including traversal rules. My questions are: Can anyone recommend a markup/language that would satisfy the declaration requirement? Is there any existing library that would ease the implementation as described above? • Why would a UIDatePicker with no functionality, added to my app via IB, cause my app to crash?

  I just added a UIDatePicker to my iPad app using IB, linked it to its outlet in the code, saved it in IB, added the UIPickerViewDelegate to my UIViewController in the code, as well as added the UIDatePicker outlet in code. When I build and run, the app launches, but will crash intermittently when I attempt to open the popover view that contains the datepicker. I say intermittently because the popover view will occasionally open successfully, but never more than once (it always crashes the second time you open the popover, if it doesn't crash the first time). Also, in the console, I get the following messsage objc[594]: FREED(id): message lastClickRow sent to freed object=0x6015a70 Why is this happening and how can I fix it? What does that console message indicate? It may be worth mentioning that the popover view also contains a table view along with the datepicker control. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

• Any ideas on how to implement a 'touchMoveOver' event in Javascript?

  I'm faffing around with SVG, specifically for web content aimed at iPad users. I've created a little dial type thingy that I'm calling a "cheese board" that I'd like to use as an interface element. http://appliedworks.co.uk/files/times/SVGTests/raphael.html Clicking on a piece of cheese (to keep the analogy going) will do "something". That bit's easy. However, I'd like the user to be able to drag their finger around the 'cheese board', firing a new event (touchesMovedOver?) every time they their finger moves over a new piece of cheese. But I can't figure out how to do it since there's no 'mouseOver' equivalent for touch interfaces. If the whole thing was made of squares, I could have created some sort of 'rectContainsPoint' method to be called for every 'touchesMoved', but that approach wouldn't work here. If anyone has any idea about how something like this could be achieved, I'd love to hear it.

• CSS dropdowns on touch-based clients. Are pure CSS dropdowns going to become extinct?

Since touch-based clients don't have a :hover state are pure CSS dropdowns going to go away? Then i thought even if you add some javascript to make the menus popup on click... What happens when the menu item (that expands to another menu) is also a link. How do you tell the difference between a click to see the menu or a click to go to that link?

• UIActionSheet With PickerView not showing up in iPad

  I am using the following code to add an actionsheet with a picker view on it to my app. From the iPhone, it displays perfectly, but when viewing on iPad (Universal app), it shows a very small pickerview with none of the other buttons right on the center of the page. • Why check if your popoverController is nil? Doesn't Obj-C ignore messages to nil?

  Pretty much everyone that writes about the UISplitView on the iPad uses the following code structure to dismiss a popover: if (popoverController != nil) { [popoverController dismissPopoverAnimated:YES]; } I though Objective-C was happy to ignore messages that are passed to nil? In fact, in the File New Project New Split View Application template, there's an example of this shortcut in the same code block (DetailsViewController.m): - (void)setDetailItem:(id)newDetailItem { if (detailItem != newDetailItem) { [detailItem release]; //might be nil detailItem = [newDetailItem retain]; // Update the view. • Working with iPhone OS 3.2 only classes

  How would you write a universal app that uses classes introduced in iPhone OS 3.2, such as UIPopoverController and UISplitViewController? On Jeff LaMarche's blog about this, Ole provides a method for instantiating these objects; you would instantiate a UIPopoverController like so: [NSClassFromString(@"UIPopoverController") alloc]. This is fine for instantiating these classes in code but what about protocols and their methods? My iPad app uses a UISplitViewController and has a class that needs to conform to the UISplitViewControllerDelegate and UIPopoverControllerDelegate. How would you declare this? And how would you work with a method such as the following? - (void)splitViewController:(UISplitViewController *)svc willHideViewController:(UIViewController *)aViewController withBarButtonItem:(UIBarButtonItem *)barButtonItem forPopoverController:(UIPopoverController *)pc where the method call requires UISplitViewController to be passed in?

• Is the UIDatePicker really the best iPhone UI mechanism for selecting dates?

  Hello! I'm diving into iPhone/iPad development and I'm trying to find an elegant mechanism for allowing the user to select dates. It seems to me that a calendar control would be the best way to go, but I don't see one in anywhere in the SDK. All all I see is this overblown, the-price-is-right-looking DatePicker control. Is this the only control that comes with UIKit for allowing the user to select dates? What about the calendar that the Notes app uses? Also, I should note I'm really trying to avoid using 3rd party code frameworks that have little or no documentation, because I'm new to all this and sufficient documentation is a must at this point. • In iPhone OS, what UTI represents a plain ol' text file?

  I'm attempting to make use of the UIDocumentInteractionController mechanism in iPhone OS 3.2, but I'm struggling to figure out exactly how to construct a UTI that it likes. I've gotten as far as attempting to set "public.plain-text", but it's hard to test whether this is the correct UTI for a plain text document, since I can't tell whether the issue is that my iPad doesn't have any apps that support plain text import. (I figured Pages would, but I suppose perhaps not, since it will attempt and fail to load any files with the extension .pages, regardless of UTI). Any seasoned OS X developers that can help on this?

• Running out of memory but not seeing excessive object allocation in Instruments

  I have an iPad app that's crashing due to low memory. However, Instruments doesn't show any significant amount of memory allocated using ObjectAlloc - it stays under 1MB for the lifetime of the application. Leaks shows less than 1kB leaked over the course of the run. Memory monitor shows the free memory on the devices drop significantly with use, eventually dropping to the point that it's out of memory. Here's a screenshot from Instruments: I'm totally stumped. As far as I can tell, this basically says that as far as my app is concerned, I'm never using more than about 750kB, but that the device is still running out of physical memory, which is causing my app to crash/force exit. I'm new to debugging memory issues with XCode. Am I measuring this wrong? Is there another way to see where this memory is going?

• Increasing width of UISearchDisplayController PopOver Results

  I have an iPad app that has a UISearchBar in its navigation bar. When I enter text in the search bar the results are automatically displayed in a UIPopOverController. That's great except the popover's default size is not wide enough for my needs. Is there a way to set its width? Apple has done this themselves with Safari's search bar. The popover that displays search results is a good bit wider than the default and they have removed the "Results" title from the popover.

• Standalone jQuery "touch" method?

  So, I'm looking to implement the ability for a plugin I wrote to read a touch "swipe" from a touch-capable internet device, like an iPhone, iPad or android. Is there anything out there? I'm not looking for something as full as jQtouch, though was considering reverse engineering the code I would need out of it. Any suggestions on the best way to approach this? A snippet of code already available? Addendum: I realize in hindsight the solution won't strictly be jQuery, as I'm pretty sure there aren't any built-in methods to handle this. I would expect standard Javascript to find itself in the answer.

• iOS CollectionView with horizontal paging instead of vertical scrolling

  I'm working on a project for a client. It's an iPad pdf reader. The client wants a collection view, but instead of scrolling vertically, he wants it to use a page control. It's pretty hard to explain, but what I basically want is all the PDFs on the device in a grid, like on the iBooks app. When that grid overflows, I want to use a page control to display the extra elements on a second page (like in the weather app). My thoughts on this were: - Create a page control with one page. - On that page, create a UICollectionView. - If the number of elements is greater than 9 add a page to the page control and add another UICollectionView, until there are enough pages to display all elements. However, this seems horribly inefficient, so my question is if there's a better way to do this.

• Interface Builder only allows one button to be "touchable"

  I'm making a clone of the classic game simon, the memory matching game. My (iPad) app will load fine, i tap start, the game screen loads, and only one of my four buttons will respond to touch commands. To troubleshoot, I tried creating a second unrelated nib and just populating it with four buttons not linked to anything. However, only one of those four buttons would respond to touch! There are no IBActions being called, nothing. Both the view itself, and all four buttons are touch enabled in the inspector...I'm stumped. I'm moreso asking if anyone has encountered anything simillar, as I'd rather not burden potential help with app-specific questions if it's avoidable. Thank you!

• UISearchDisplayController automatically creates a UIPopovercontroller to display content search result ?! How to dismiss it ?

  Hi, I'm using a UISearchDisplayController with a UISearchBar. I put this UISearchBar in my app using IB and I get : Fine : when you start taping, the result popovercontroller appears magically (I didn't write anything on my own to make it appear !) Then, when a row is clicked among the result, I want to dismiss the PopoverController BUT at this stage, I never instantiated the UIPopoverController on my side : it looks like if there's an encapsulated behavior in the UISearchDisplayController that automatically wraps its searchContentsController inside a UIPopoverController. That's really great because everything works perfectly without doing anything except that I cannot get the reference to this UIPopoverController to dismiss it :( Does anyone know how to get the reference to this "magically" created UIPopoverController ? (this is the proof the iPad is really a "magical" device ;) I thought there would be a reference to the UIPopoverController from its contentController (through its parent property for instance), but I cannot find any way to get a pointer to it :/

• Better product to develop for, iPad or Android based tablet in a purely business related application

  Hey guys Just wondering what you'd suggest as the best platform for developing a business application for a tablet device. The application needs to be multitouch, have access to a maps API, a database on the device. It will not be going on sale in the app store or Androids market, it is purely for specific business task and not for the general consumer. Obviously the options seem to be iPhone OS and the iPad or Android and an Android tablet device. The form factor for the end product requires something in the region of 8 inch+ screen and enough processing power to provide a good experience for the end user. Any help would be much appreciated. • changing a picker to table view OR having multiple table views on the same view

  Hello - My iPad app was rejected due to my use of a picker. The picker was used to control a table view. In my view, a picker was displaying a series of items and when one of those items was selected, it used that selection to populate a table with data. (hopefully that makes sense). Now I need to do this without the picker so I need to have the data that was in the picker be represented in a table view. My question, is how do I have multiple tableViews in the same view? I'm guessing I need to have some kind of if statement in the tableview delegate methods, but I'm not quite sure what the if statement needs to be. Or maybe i'm thinking of this the totally wrong way thanks

• Oracle access from iOS

  I'm developing an iPad app that needs read-only access to an Oracle database. Is there any way to do this? As far as I can see, the only options are using OCI, which requires a prebuilt binary in the form of the instant client (and not built for ARM), or OJDBC drivers. Both of these seem to be out of the question. In my research I have discovered that libmysqlclient compiles for arm with minimal tuning. This is a stretch, but is there any possible way to use this to my advantage? I have seen this product providing odbc connectivity through the use of a Windows gateway machine using the ODBC client libraries, but this solution really isn't an option for me at the present time. Any ideas?

• iPhone transparent images rendering poorly

  I'm developing an iPad application. I have been provided with a PNG image that contains some transparency - basically a drop shadow. The problem I'm having is that this is rendering poorly within the application, both on the device and in the sim. I can't provide the whole image but I've made up some samples to illustrate. The first is how the image appears in the PSD (correctly that is). The second is how it appears on the device. You can see that the strip of shadow in the middle of the image is distinctly more yellow and poorly looking. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  I would like to build a simple reader app for the iPad 2 that would allow users to navigate/read via voice controls. The app would allow the user to enter a mode where the microphone was live and listened for predefined keywords like 'down', 'up', 'next', 'back', 'home', etc. I don't want to reinvent the wheel on this so I'm just wondering first, if someone has done this already and if not, are there any good tutorials or SDKs available to help with recording someone's voice, and then comparing future output to see if it matches, or just dealing with the microphone in general?

• keyboard in UIWebView shows and then hides itself on input focus

  I have a page that's loading into a UIWebView (which takes 100% of the screen) on an iPad. When I touch a text field, the page positions the text field to the right place and the keyboard starts to come up, but then it turns around and goes back down and blur is called on the input field. When I try this same page in mobile Safari, the keyboard is able to deploy successfully. I can't figure out what the rules are for the keyboard to show successfully and stay up = and why this is different for uiwebview than safari. All my research on the subject has yielded no answers.

I have an iPhone developer program membership, and I'm not interested in submitting this stuff to the app store. I found the shinycocos project, which appears to embed a Ruby interpreter in an app. But I can't get it to run, and it seems pretty customized for running cocos2d stuff.   Hello, I am doing something like extracting the pdf text in a string format so as to annotate the text and in the same process i need to find the image positions covered in the same pdf file so as to maintain its position. Now the problem is that i am not getting the exact positions of the images in the same pdf file. Is it possible to use some thing like OCR,if yes,how to use that?
