  • How do I reattach to Ubuntu Server's 'do-release-upgrade' process?

    I accidentally pressed Ctrl+C during Ubuntu Server's do-release-upgrade process. I'd dropped to a shell to compare a .conf file in /etc/. When I pressed Ctrl-C, it asked whether I wanted to try to reattach to the upgrade process, but it failed to do so. So I quit, and now there's a hanging dpkg process which is holding onto the apt lock. This is a virtualised server with no GUI frontend... Is it possible to recover the upgrade process, or do I have to kill the dpkg process and start again? UPDATE:- AFAICT, there was no way to reattach to the upgrade process. However, it wasn't a disaster at all. I killed the hanging dpkg process, and then ran dpkg --configure -a. This walks you through reconfiguring all packages already installed on the system, tidying up any problems whilst it does so. After that, I used aptitude to upgrade the remaining packages, which had already been downloaded, but hadn't been installed or configured.

  • Huge performance difference between two web servers, odd behavior seen using process monitor

    We have two Coldfusion servers that have a huge performance difference running the exact same code on the exact same input data. The code in questions instantiates a large amount of CFCs (Coldfusion Components, which are similar to objects in OOP languages). I compared the two servers by running Process Monitor and then calling the problematic code on both machines. I learned two things. First, Coldfusion opens CFC files every time it instantiates an object. Both servers do this, so it cannot be the cause of the performance difference. Second, the fast server opens the CFC files directly while the server with the performance problem seems to navigate its way through the path until it reaches the desired CFC file. It does this for every file, even the ones it has previously loaded, and because the code instantiates so many CFCs it becomes very slow. See below the partial Promon traces that show this behavior. It can take over 60 seconds for the slow server to do what the fast one does in 2 seconds. Can anyone tell me what causes this behavior? Is it a Coldfusion setting? Since Coldfusion runs on top of Java, is it a Java setting? Is it an OS option? The fast server is running Windows XP and I think the slow server is a Windows Server 2003. Bonus question: Coldfusion doesn't seem to perform any READ FILE operations on any of the CFC or CFM files. How can this be?   • Using Word COM objects in .NET, WinWord process won't quit after calling Word.Documents.Add

    I'm running into the classic scenario where, when creating Word COM objects in .NET (via the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word assembly), the WinWord process won't exit even though I'm properly closing and releasing the objects. I've narrowed it down to the use of the Word.Documents.Add() method. I can work with Word in other ways without a problem (opening documents, modifying contents, etc) and WinWord.exe quits when I tell it to. It's once I use the Add() method that the process is left running. Here is a simple example which reproduces the problem: Dim oWord As New Word.Application() oWord.Visible = False Dim oDocuments As Word.Documents = oWord.Documents Dim oDoc As Word.Document = oDocuments.Add(Template:=CObj(sTemplatePath), NewTemplate:=False, DocumentType:=Word.WdNewDocumentType.wdNewBlankDocument, Visible:=False) ' dispose objects oDoc.Close() While (Marshal.ReleaseComObject(oDoc) < 0) End While oDoc = Nothing oWord.Quit() While (Marshal.ReleaseComObject(oWord) < 0) End While oWord = Nothing As you can see I'm creating and disposing the objects properly, even taking the extra step to loop Marsha.ReleaseComObject until it returns the proper code. Working with the Word objects is fine in other regards, it's just that pesky Documents.Add that is causing me grief. Is there another object that gets created in this process that I need to reference and dispose of? Is there another disposal step I need to follow? Something else? Your help is much appreciated :)

  • Setting up an efficient and effective development process

    I am in the midst of setting up the development environment (PHP/MySQL) for my start-up. We use three sets of servers: LIVE - the servers which provide the actual application TEST - providing a testing version before it is actually released DEV - the development servers The development servers run SVN with each developer checking out their local copy. At the end of each day completed fixes are checked in and then we use Hudson to automate our build process and then transfer it over to TEST. We then check the application still functions correctly using a tester and then if everything is fine move it to LIVE. I am happy with this process but I do have two questions: How would you recommend we do local testing - as each developer adds new pages or changes functionality I want them to be able to test what they are doing. Would you just setup local Apache and a local database and have them test locally on their own machine? How would you recommend dealing with data layer changes? Is there anything else you would recommend doing to really make our development process as easy and efficient as possible? Thanks in advance

  • Running another process without GUI freezing

    I'm having trouble getting my GUI to appear and not freeze while running (and waiting for) an outside process. In this case, drivers.exe is a very simply program where the user simply clicks "OK". So whenever I click OK, it exits. I am trying to simply make my status strip count numbers up (really fast) as drivers.exe is executing.   • Locating memory leak in Apache httpd process, PHP/Doctrine-based application

    I have a PHP application using these components: Apache 2.2.3-31 on Centos 5.4 PHP 5.2.10 Xdebug 2.0.5 with Remote Debugging enabled APC 3.0.19 Doctrine ORM for PHP 1.2.1 using Query Caching and Results Caching via APC MySQL 5.0.77 using Query Caching I've noticed that when I start up Apache, I eventually end up 10 child processes. As time goes on, each process will grow in memory until each one approaches 10% of available memory, which begins to slow the server to a crawl since together they grow to take up 100% of memory. My hunch is that it could be APC, since it stores data between requests, but at the same time, it seems weird that it would store data inside the httpd process. How can I track down which part of my app is causing the memory leak? What tools can I use to see how the memory usage is growing inside the httpd process and what is contributing to it?

  • Problem using custom HttpHandler to process requests for both .aspx and non-extension pages in IIS7

    I am trying to process both ".aspx" and non-extension page requests (i.e. both contact.aspx and /contact/) using a custom HttpHandler in IIS7. My handler works just fine in either one case or the other, but as soon as I try to process both cases, it only works for one. Please see Handlers snippet from my web.config below: If i keep only mapping to "*.aspx" then all .aspx requests are processed correctly, but obviously extensionless requests won't work: <add name="AllPages.ASPX" path="*.aspx" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> If i change the mapping to "*" then all extensionless requests are processed correctly, but ".aspx" requests that should still be handled by this handler stop working. Note that i added the StaticFiles entry in order to process files that are on disk like images, css, js, etc. <add name="WebResource" path="WebResource.axd" verb="GET" type="System.Web.Handlers.AssemblyResourceLoader" /> <add name="StaticFiles" verb="GET,HEAD" path="*.*" type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" resourceType="File" /> <add name="AllPages" path="*" verb="*" type="Test.PageHandlerFactory, Test" preCondition="" /> The crazy thing is that when i load an ".aspx" request (with the 2nd configuration shown) IIS7 gives a 404 not found error. The error also says that the request is processed by the StaticFiles handler. But I made sure to add resourceType="File" to the StaticFileHandler in order to avoid this. According to MS this means the request is only for "physical files on disk". Am i misreading/interpreting the "on disk" part? My .aspx file isn't on disk, that's why i want to use the handler in the first place.

My question is how to save an attachment into the file system from the source. For example, if I isolate the section below, how do I need to process it before saving it into a gif file to create a valid gif?   • Why won't my program terminate?

    I have a .NET Compact Framework app that can runs on three windows machines (Desktop windows and two WinCE machines) and on the WinCE devices, the process never terminates on exit, even if I call Application.Exit(). Besides .NET, it uses one COM component (which does everything on the UI thread). If I break into the debugger after exitting, Visual Studio shows only one thread and a completely blank call stack. What could possibly cause this? Update: My process is terminating on the desktop but not the WinCE machines.     I have a PHP application using these components: Apache 2.2.3-31 on Centos 5.4 PHP 5.2.10 Xdebug 2.0.5 with Remote Debugging enabled APC 3.0.19 Doctrine ORM for PHP 1.2.1 using Query Caching and Results Caching via APC MySQL 5.0.77 using Query Caching I've noticed that when I start up Apache, I eventually end up 10 child processes. As time goes on, each process will grow in memory until each one approaches 10% of available memory, which begins to slow the server to a crawl since together they grow to take up 100% of memory. How can I track down which part of my app is causing the memory leak? What tools can I use to see how the memory usage is growing inside the httpd process and what is contributing to it?

Does it keep doing it's job, or does it get suspended, and stopped at the point where it was. Can someone please explain.     Let's say I have two database instances: InstanceA - Production server InstanceB - Test server My workflow is to deploy new schema changes to InstanceB first, test them, and then deploy them to InstanceA. So, at any one time, the instance schema relationship looks like this: InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 InstanceB - Schema Version 1.6 (new version being tested) An additional part of my workflow is to keep the data in InstanceB as fresh as possible. To fulfill this, I am taking the database backups of InstanceA and applying them (restoring them) to InstanceB. My question is, how does schema version affect the restoral process? I know I can do this: Backup InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 Restore to InstanceB - Schema Version 1.5 But can I do this? Backup InstanceA - Schema Version 1.5 Restore to InstanceB - Schema Version 1.6 (new version being tested) If no, what would the failure look like? If yes, would the type of schema change matter? For example, if Schema Version 1.6 differed from Schema Version 1.5 by just having an altered storec proc, I imagine that this type of schema change should't affect the restoral process. On the other hand, if Schema Version 1.6 differed from Schema Version 1.5 by having a different table definition (say, an additional column), I image this would affect the restoral process. I hope I've made this clear enough. Thanks in advance for any input!

I'm confused as I thought the IO streams would be passive, unable to keep a process alive, or to make Java think the process is still alive.

  • Python GUI does not update until entire process is finished

    I have a process that gets a files from a directory and puts them in a list. It then iterates that list in a loop. The last line of the loop being where it should update my gui display, then it begins the loop again with the next item in the list. My problem is that it does not actually update the gui until the entire process is complete, which depending on the size of the list could be 30 seconds to over a minute. This gives the feeling of the program being 'hung' What I wanted it to do was to process one line in the list, update the gui and then continue. Where did I go wrong? The line to update the list is # Populate listview with drive contents.     Hi, I am using the following plug in for cookies in jQuery: https://code.google.com/p/cookies/ The issue i am having is not with the plugin but when and how to delete the cookie at the end of a quoting process. The site i am using this on is a six step online quote and buy process. There is Omniture event serialisation sitestat tracking applied to some of the pages. This event serialisation has to include the name of the event and a random number of which i create. I have a generic function for this which i call at the bottom of the page like so: serialEvent('event21:', 'payment'); Here is the function: function serialEvent(eventNumber, eventName) { var sessionID = jaaulde.utils.cookies.get('sessionID'); var remLength = 20 - eventName.length; var remSession = sessionID.substr(sessionID.length - remLength, remLength); var eventName = eventName + remSession; s.events = eventNumber + eventName; } I need to delete the cookie at the end of the process, the Thank you page but i also need the cookie 'sessionID' for the 'serialEvent' function. As the function is called at the bottom of the page should i just write the cookie delete after it? Is that robust enough? I need to be sure that the function has successfully been called before the cookie is deleted. The code for deleting the cookie is quite simple: jaaulde.utils.cookies.del('sessionID'); Thanks :)

On my development machine at an average instance, I run multiple servers (a database server, a web server), multiple instance of IDEs (either Visual Studio or NetBeans), Web-browser with multiple tabs (in Chrome, each tab is a process on its own), FTP client, SSH client etc. Does having a multi-core system improve the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously?

  • Install Shield 2009 Premier, Uninstall doesn't close the process/gui

    My application (developed using C#.net) is open now i uninstall, InstallShield gives message stating the application is already open and whether really want to close the application. Selection 'Ignore' continues uninstall. Some files and the exe of the application are not closed. How to close them by installshield on uninstall. Or there are some properties I have to set. I know adding a custom action at uninstall i can kill the process, but shouldn't installshield do it?
