• SSD Performance for PHP?

  My programmer just built an application with PHP using Doctrine ORM (will be a high traffic social networking website), and it's very heavy in PHP/Apache and CPU. The queries are wonderfully fast, and MySQL is barely using any CPU, it's just Apache. I was curious to if an SSD would help speed up PHP/Apache, because I know the bottleneck is in PHP reading multiple files, class files, and loading up a bunch of data. So common sense makes me think if PHP is reading multiple PHP files, an SSD would only help as far as read/write? I was thinking of doing a high performance SSD for the PHP application, but for user image uploads, I would just continue using a 15k SAS. Is there any performance issues regarding using an SSD in this kind of situation? And would it prove to help speed up PHP/Apache, and help the CPU problem out?

  OK, this probably is supposed to be the easiest thing in the world, but I've been trying for the entire day, and it's still not working.. Any help is highly appreciated! What I did: Downloaded Tomcat 6.0.26 & Spring 3.0.1 Downloaded PetClinic from https://src.springframework.org/svn/spring-samples/petclinic Built & deployed petclinic.war. Ran fine with default TopLink persistence. Edited webapps/WEB-INF/spring/applicationContext-jpa.xml and changed jpaVendorAdaptor from TopLink to Hibernate. Edited webapps/WEB-INF/web.xml and changed context-param from applicationContext-jdbc.xml to applicationContext-jpa.xml Copied everything in the Spring 3.0.1 distribution to TOMCAT_HOME/lib. Launched tomcat. Saw Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException: ClassLoader [org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader] does NOT provide an 'addTransformer(ClassFileTransformer)' method. Specify a custom LoadTimeWeaver or start your Java virtual machine with Spring's agent: -javaagent:spring-agent.jar Uncommented line <Loader loaderClass="org.springframework.instrument.classloading.tomcat.TomcatInstrumentableClassLoader"/> in webapps/META-INF/context.xml. Same error. Added that line to TOMCAT_HOME/context.xml Deployed without error. Here's a simplified example of the code (reproduces most elements of the scenario, but doesn't reproduce the behavior; I can't expose our internal entities, so I'm looking for clues to account for the exception). Say I have a class, Account with an AccountID read-only guid, and an AccountName read-write string. I serialize & immediately deserialize a clone. Deserializing throws an Incorrect wire-type deserializing Guid exception while deserializing. Here's example usage...   This question was inspired by my struggles with ASP.NET MVC, but I think it applies to other situations as well. Now imagine this scenario multiplied by 10 or 100, and you can see that it can quickly become quite tedious and error prone to ensure consistency across ViewModels (and therefore across Views). How can I "DRY up" this code? Before you answer, "Just put all the attributes on FooModel," I've tried that, but it didn't work because I need to keep my ViewModels "flat". In other words, I can't just compose each ViewModel with a Model--I need my ViewModel to have only the properties (and attributes) that should be consumed by the View, and the View can't burrow into sub-properties to get at the values. Update LukLed's answer suggests using inheritance. This definitely reduces the amount of non-DRY code, but it doesn't eliminate it. Note that, in my example above, the DisplayName attribute for the Category property would need to be written twice because the data type of the property is different between the display and edit ViewModels. This isn't going to be a big deal on a small scale, but as the size and complexity of a project scales up (imagine a lot more properties, more attributes per property, more views per model), there is still the potentially for "repeating yourself" a fair amount. Perhaps I'm taking DRY too far here, but I'd still rather have all my "friendly names", data types, validation rules, etc. typed out only once.

  After reading previous questions about this error, it seems like all of them conclude that you need to enable XA on all of the data sources. But: What if I don't want a distributed transaction? What would I do if I want to start transactions on two different databases at the same time, but commit the transaction on one database and roll back the transaction on the other? I'm wondering how my code actually initiated a distributed transaction. It looks to me like I'm starting completely separate transactions on each of the databases. I ran the app on two different sun application servers. On one runs it fine, the other throws the error. I don't see any difference in how the two servers are configured although they do connect to different, but equivalent databases. So the question is Why doesn't the above code start completely independent transactions? How can I force it to start independent transactions rather than a distributed transaction? What configuration could cause the difference in behavior between the two application servers? Thanks.

• Atomikos rollback doesn't clear JPA persistence context?

  I have a Spring/JPA/Hibernate application and am trying to get it to pass my Junit integration tests against H2 and MySQL. Currently I am using Atomikos for transactions and C3P0 for connection pooling. Despite my best efforts my DAO integration one of the tests is failing with org.hibernate.NonUniqueObjectException. In the failing test I create an object with the "new" operator, set the ID and call persist on it. @Test @Transactional public void save_UserTestDataNewObject_RecordSetOneLarger() { int expectedNumberRecords = 4; User newUser = createNewUser(); dao.persist(newUser); List<User> allUsers = dao.findAll(0, 1000); assertEquals(expectedNumberRecords, allUsers.size()); } In the previous testmethod I do the same thing (createNewUser() is a helper method that creates an object with the same ID everytime). I am sure that creating and persisting a second object with the same Id is the cause, but each test method is in own transaction and the object I created is bound to a private test method variable. I can even see in the logs that Spring Test and Atomikos are rolling back the transaction associated with each test method. I would have thought the rollback would have also cleared the persistence context too. On a hunch, I added an a call to dao.clear() at the beginning of the faulty test method and the problem went away!! So rollback doesn't clear the persistence context??? If not, then who does?? • Hibernate many-to-many mapping not saved in pivot table

  I having problems saving many to many relationships to a pivot table. The way the pojos are created is unfortunately a pretty long process which spans over a couple of different threads which work on the (to this point un-saved) object until it is finally persisted. I associate the related objects to one another right after they are created and when debugging I can see the List of related object populated with their respective objects. So basically all is fine to this point. In the article it states that you need to annotate a Spring bean with @Transactional and methods/fields with @PersistenceContext in order to provide transaction support and to inject an entity manager. Is there something the defines a bean as a "Spring Bean"? I have a bean class which implements CRUD operations on entities using generics: @Transactional public class GenericCrudServiceBean implements GenericCrudService { @PersistenceContext(unitName="MyData") private EntityManager em; @Override @PersistenceContext public <T> T create(T t) { em.persist(t); return t; } @Override @PersistenceContext public <T> void delete(T t) { t = em.merge(t); em.remove(t); } ... ... ... @Override @PersistenceContext public List<?> findWithNamedQuery(String queryName) { return em.createNamedQuery(queryName).getResultList(); } } Originally I only had this peristence context annotation: @PersistenceContext(unitName="MyData") private EntityManager em; but had a null em when findWithNamedQuery was invoked. Then I annotated the methods as well, but em is still null (no injection?). I was wondering if this had something to do with my bean not being recognized as "Spring". • Php template caching design

  Hello to all, I want to include caching in my app design. Caching templates for starters. The design I have used so far is very modular. I have created an ORM implementation for all my tables and each table is represented by the corresponding class. All the requests are handled by one controller which routes them to the appropriate webmethod functions. I am using a template class for handling UI parts. What I have in mind for caching includes the implementation of a separate Cache class for handling caching with the flexibility to either store in files, apc or memcache. Right now I am testing with file caching. Some thoughts Should I include the logic of checking for cached versions in the Template class or in the webmethods which handle the incoming requests and which eventually call the Template class. In the first case, things are pretty simple as I will not have to change anything more than pass the template class an extra argument (whether to load from cache or not). In the second case however, I am thinking of checking for a cached version immediately in the webmethod and if found return it. This will save all the processing done until the logic reaches the template (first case senario). Both senarios however, rely on an accurate mechanism of invalidating caches, which brings as to Invalidating caches As I see it (and you can add your input freely) a template cached file, becomes invalidate if: a. the expiration set, is reached. b. the template file itself is updated (ie by the developer when adding a new line) c. the webmethod that handles the request changes (ie the developer adds/deletes something in the code) d. content coming from the db and ending in the template file is modified I am thinking of storing a json encoded array inside the cached file. The first value will be the expiration timestamp of the cache. The second value will be the modification time of the php file with the code handling the request (to cope with option c above) The third will be the content itself The validation process I am considering, according to the above senarios, is: a. If the expiration of the cached file (stored in the array) is reached, delete the cache file b. if the cached file's mod time is smaller than the template's skeleton file mod time, delete the cached file c. if the mod time of the php file is greated than the one stored in the cache, delete the cached file. d. This is tricky. In the ORM implementation I ahve added event handlers (which fire when adding, updating, deleting objects). I could delete the cache file every time an object thatprovides content to the template, is modified. The problem is how to keep track which cached files correpond to each schema object. Take this example, a user has his shortprofile page and a full profile page (2 templates) These templates can be cached. Now, every time the user modifies his profile, the event handler would need to know which templates or cached files correspond to the User, so that these files can be deleted. I could store them in the db but I am looking for a beter approach

Should the domain object interact with repository to get/save data? If the domain object doesn't use repository, then how does the Infrastructure layer (like unit of work) know which domain object is new/modified/removed? For the second question. I know a lot of ORM can automatically persistent the changes if i use the Roles property, but sometimes i don't like this way because of the performance reason. • Initializing SD card in SPI issues

  Sorry for the length of this question, but I thought it best to show as much detail to fend of questions asking if I had done A when I had already done A... ;-) I've had a look at the "micro-SD card initialization using SPI interface" thread and didn't see any answers that matched my issue (i.e. things I haven't already tried). I have a similar issue where I'm trying to access a SD card through a micro-controller's SPI interface (specifically an HC908). I've tried following the flow charts in the Physical Layer Simplified Specification v2.00 and it seems to initialize correctly on Transcend 1GB & 2GB and an AE&C 1GB card. But I'm having problems on 3 other random cards from my stash of old cards that I've used on my camera. My code is all HC908 assembler. I scoped out the SPI clock line and during initialization it's running about 350kHz (the only speed multiplier that the HC908 supplies at my low MCU clock speed that falls within the 100-400kHz window). I've scoped this one out and I'm not seeing any rogue clock cycles going through between MOSI/MISO transfers. Anyone have any clues? Need any more info?   I just wanted to clarify my understanding of ASP .NET MVC (current version is 4). I was reading this article on How does ASP.NET MVC work? So, how does ASP.NET know how to route requests to MVC? The answer lies in web.config. There is a new http module added to modules collection in ASP.NET MVC projects So basically an mvc application is implemented as an HTTPModule or at least the url routing portion of an mvc app? Would it be possible for one to create and register a custom routing module and then possibly create their own micro mvc framework like Sinatra in Ruby or Slim in PHP?

• Injection of banners in my webbrowsers possible malware

  Recently I have started to suspect that I have some kind of virus on my computer. There are 3 symptoms: Banners are being displayed on pages that doesn't use commercials, for instance when viewing screen-shots on Steam. It is only displayed after the rest of the page has been loaded and seems to be injected into it. The whole page is replaced with a commercial with the option to skip the commercial. The page is replaced with a search window claiming that the page could not be found. I have tried to scan my computer with Antivir and Adaware but only found a couple of tracking cookies. I have run HijackThis but since this isn't really my area I haven't been able to discern what shouldn't be there except the line about zonealarm since I have uninstalled it. Is there anyone out there who is able to see if there is anything suspicious in the log-file at the end or has suggestions regarding programs that might be better to find the virus than Antivir and Adaware?   Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.
